With a pleasantly unexpected change in the weather I rushed out and grabbed the opportunity to film this lovely walk through the aptly named Walkington. This picturesque destination offers an authentic taste of English countryside living with a unique blend of history, culture and natural beauty with quaint cottages, historic landmarks and scenic walking trails.
Walkington was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has a population of around 2,000 people. The village has three ponds, the largest of which, the Village Pond, is located at the south end of the village which is surrounded by open countryside with several public footpaths and bridleways which are all accessible from the village itself. Walkington also has a local shop, a post office, and three public houses: The Barrel, The Dog and Duck, and The Ferguson Fawsitt Arms & Country Lodge. The village hosts an annual 10k race and fun run, which attracts runners from all over the region.
The All Hallows Church is a Grade II listed building located at the heart of the village and dates back to the 12th century. The south doorway and transept arches are believed to date from around 1200, whilst major rebuilding work was completed in 1818-1819 retaining the medieval perpendicular windows and tower.
Not far from the village the site of Walkington Wold can be found which consists of two Bronze Age barrows that were excavated between 1967 and 1969 by J.E. Barlett and R.W. Mackey. One of these Neolithic long barrows is Ling Howe which is the most northerly of its kind known in England and is located 250m north west of Lion's Den Farm. Long barrows like these were constructed as earthen or drystone mounds with flanking ditches and acted as funerary monuments during the Early and Middle Neolithic periods (3400-2400 BC). They represent the burial places of Britain's early farming communities and are amongst the oldest field monuments surviving visibly in the present landscape. At Walkington Wold, burials were discovered which comprise the skeletal remains of 13 individuals from the Anglo-Saxon period believed to be decapitated Anglo-Saxon criminals. The site is considered an Anglo-Saxon execution cemetery understood to be the result of an early post-Roman massacre.
