And I thought I wasn't triggered by the state of modern society as a doomed oligopoly of corporations, and there goes Alleyway Jack a thorough analysis on the dystopia of Midgar and the benevolence of Shinra Corporation.
Let's not pretend that the Cadbury family's power over Bourneville was anything short of absolute (limited only by the then very much _laissez-faire_ law of the land).
Yep they were 100% the landowners, it's more the principle of how they chose to utilise the land in a philathropic way. You do touch on an interesting point about later issues with garden town movements though. A lot of investment came from the wealthy to buy the land, who wanted the architects to re-focus on economic use/shareholder returns rather than liveability. A stark illustration of the wealth disparity at the time is that in some cases several thousand working-class citizens couldn't raise the capital between them to buy land for a garden town equal to what 1 wealthy industrialist could.

Neo-Midgar is a lie. There is no reason to believe that such a place would ever be built, based on all of Shinra's past and present behavior. Rather, we have every reason to believe that any future projects like Midgar would be much like Midgar itself: exploitative, toxic, wasteful, and another step toward the destruction of humanity and the planet alike.
@Fauntleroy. Well, I Did Say Under The Correct Leadership. For Instance, Let's Look At The Industrialist Daatz Omega Of Daatz Omega Industries. He Is The De Facto Leader Of A Worldwide Mega Conglomerate. If He & His Conglomerate Were In That World Shin-Ra Would Be Scooped Up Into The Conglomerate, & Daatz Omega Would Ultimately Calling The Shots At Shin-Ra. Daatz Omega's Ultimate Goal Is To Advance Worlds, Not To Intentionally Harm The People Of That World, Or The Conglomerate's Personnel. Daatz Omega Does Not Tolerate Abuse Of Power.
I'm really glad you didn't just say it was all about capitalism and leave it at that. There's so many other videos around where they act like the game is putting actoss an anti-capitalist message. But it's just them trying to put forward their heavily biased political agenda.
Yeah, people who see FF7 where you start by joining an eco-terr0rist group who sets out to ass@ssinate the CEO of a megacorporation, which has a globally dominant military that can reach any part of the globe, as it literally kills the planet by extracting natural resources for profit and human experimentation and think "Oh, this game clearly has an anticapitalist message" are fools.
@@Fauntleroy. In FF7, the bad guys are capitalists, but the game overall does not have an anti-capitalist message. And in this video the idea being discussed is Shinra's Market monopoly over energy. Which allowed them to build tremendous wealth and invest in things like their own military, space exploration program, city management, etc. Basically, They became the dominant world power due to a market monopoly. Because there was no regulation or government to check them and prevent their monopoly over energy. This is not the same thing as an "anti-capitalism" message. Because for Capitalism to work properly the consumer needs to have choice between multiple companies/products. But in FF7s world, they don't. Overall FF7's core theme is about "life", which is much more broad than something like capitalism, environmentalism, etc.
@stanm4410 It's even debatable whether the bad guys are capitalists. President Shinra was the closest to being one, but the motivations of the others varied. They mostly had roles associated with the government rather than a corporation. I agree with all the other stuff you said. Something else to take note of is how capitalism is used to aid the player to thwart Shinra regarding all the shops and small businesses that are there to sell you goods.

The way you blend narrative analysis with historical context is really fascinating and insightful. It’s one of my favorite aspects of your essays! :3
The videos you’ve made the last few months have been my fav you’ve ever done
Wow I'm blown away by your videos! This is probably my favorite. I really value your analysis and the ease in which you eloquently express it

Shinra is basically America's oligarchy manifested as a fictional entity.
And I thought I wasn't triggered by the state of modern society as a doomed oligopoly of corporations, and there goes Alleyway Jack a thorough analysis on the dystopia of Midgar and the benevolence of Shinra Corporation.
That was quite the analysis.
I'm surprised you were able to get that much information across in ten minutes!
Basically Shinra is Darpa 😂
I could totally see Howard Roark join up with Barret. Considering how ugly he'd find Midgar he might be okay to bomb more than just the reactors 😂
Great stuff.
More like this please

Even though Shinra was a morally slanted man, he did great things
