While most of the times gigantic ships take our breath away with their sheer size, it is the engineering marvel behind them that makes them truly remarkable. Propellers that move ships forth are of a size to be able to bear weight of such a huge ship. Hence, it’s only fair some credit be given to them and their size. Here is a list of the biggest ship propellers marine world has seen until now.

Sorry video, you lost credibility when I had to reread one sentence 3 times before realizing it was unreadable...
Then you lost ALL credibility when you said the titanic has two propellors... but the picture shows 3.

There is a difference between the words two, to, and too.
I’m not certain why you are confused by this. They did not say the Titanic only had two propellers at all. The size of them only applied to two of them. The central propeller was non-reversible as it was driven off the turbine, it was also much smaller. The operative being the words “THREE BLADES”. The center has four.
I’m not sure which sentence gave you so much difficulty either. Hopefully English is not your first language and you only read it every few years.
@@roundsm18, it would appear you have difficulty reading English yourself. To quote the text @1:18 "This passenger vessel featured two propellers, each with three blades." You see that word "two"? Yeah, that means greater than one and less than three. The photo clearly shows three propellers. Your apology is accepted. Oh, and bronze metal? Bronze *is* a metal.
Clearly the author of the text did not proofread the text before posting the video. No doubt he purloined the images from the net as well. Stupid video.
wickedcabinboy the two in reference were the size stated in the video. The third was not. It was drastically smaller in size. So would it have made it better to have an addendum to follow stating the third propeller was smaller?
It was also not a primary propulsion and was non-reversible due to the plumbing of the steam turbine.
There is a difference between bronze and bronzed which could have been the reasoning for their verbiage choice.

The Titanic had 3 propellers not 2, she had 2 outward 3 bladed propellers and a central 4 bladed propeller.
Christopher Tinker there was no evidence she had a 4 blade centre prop, that's Olympic. Titanic and Britanic didn't have photos and the for Olympic and Titanic the shipyards records on their propellers showed they had 3 bladed centre propellers in 1911-12
@Kuba Libertin Yes they had changed Olympics propellers 5 times through her life and Titanic was the faster while having the same machinery but the improved propeller configuration, search the Harland & Wolff's records
please remake this video, the quality (picture and content-wise) was already at the time when it was upped first totally behind actual techniques. It's awful, although it's a beautiful topic, honestly.

I worked at a shipyard in 1974,75,76 as a rigger,and we installed propellers on 5 super tankers we built, 72 tons each and 35 foot in diameter.So how come they aren't on here?
Are you claiming the center propeller on the Titanic was just a dummy put there to make a better looking picture?

The central propeller was driven off the turbine and, while non-reversible was in fact smaller.

Only 1 and 2 belong to the biggest propellers. All the others are topped by far from a mass of ULCC, VLCC and mass bulk carriers. All ships which are by far bigger than any of these ships shown here. And they have mostly one or sometimes two propellers. VLCC and ULCC carriers often have a load capacity of more than twice of the fully loaden displacement of Emma Maersk.
The relevant units are tdw (load capacity in tons) and tons displacement (total weight in tons of the Ship) not BRT OR BRZ. This is a unit for room space. One register ton = 100 cubic feet. Ships like oasis of the seas are only lightweight paperboxes. Much BRZ with low displacement. 225000BRZ at only 110000 short tons. Titanic has 46000BRZ at 53000tons displacement. Much more massive. A Gerald f Ford aircraft carrier has 100000tons displacement and the ULCC Jahre viking has 260000BRZ and 724000 short tons displacement with 564000tdw load capacity.
So the other ships are only midgets 😄
I need to ask what BRT and BRZ are you talking about? The official ENGLISH terms for overall internal volume are GRT (Gross Register Tonnage) and GT (Gross Tonnage). GRT and NRT are outdated terms and GT and NT are used since 1982 and they're calculated by using formulas and they don't even have units. Register ton became an officially extinct term in 1994.
And some more info:
The propulsion power needed to give a ship with a specific gross displacement and hydrodynamics (displacement isn't he only factor) a specific speed define the size and shape of a propeller / propellers.
A higher speed is received by giving the propeller blades a steeper pitch and/or a higher rotational speed. The diameter of the propeller indeed settle the traction power. If a propeller is too small, it can't move enough water through it, vacuum will be created, and the desirable speed can't be received.
And naturally, if more than one propeller are used, their size can be decreased.
The aircraft carriers mentioned can do more than 30 knots and have enormous 260,000 shp (shaft horse power), probably the most powerful ships, but they have 4 propellers, so no size record breaking propellers here.
Yamato had bigger propellers than bizmark. Your video has more flaws than swiss cheese has holes. Fact check before uploading.
+wcresponder And how can the Oasis of the Seas have bigger propellers than the Queen Elizabeth 2. Oasis' Azipods are 20 MW each and QE2 has 44 MW / propeller ??? I don't think either the Oasis or the Carnival Elation should be on this list. I agree about Emma Maersk, she also has the biggest diesel engine ever made and is faster and more powerful than any other, even bigger merchant ship.
It doesn't matter, Bismark and yamatos props are only outboarder props compared to real big top ten props. Bismarck and Yamato by far don't belong into this list. Put them somewhere to the fishing trawlers... 😄

I know, I actually compared passenger ships with each other, none of them would belong in this list at all.
I'm indeed a naval amateur historian but my biggest passion isn't the size of propellers, but I can see that this list is sooo wrong.
Yes, only container vessels and crude oil carriers. All the ships with low speed two stroke diesels or low geared turbines with big low revolutions high efficiency props.
Hey just a suggestion would be to include all measurements in the same unit (i.e Imperial or Metric). And another comment would be that one slide didnt have the correct information on it. Would love to see another one sometime though

well I was wondering why it wasn't on the list. As you know it only had one engine, so the prop must have been as big as Bermuda

Just to educate you a little the number 6 ship is called the Nathaniel B. Palmer after the Antarctic explore. The ship was built at North American Shipbuilding in Larose Louisiana. It is owned by Edison Chouest offshore and has been used buy NOAA, National Geographic and scientist from around the world. The props are nearly 14 feet tall and use veritable pitch technology. That way the clutches only have to spin the wheels in one direction. It makes for much smother transition from forward to reverse. The ship can even rock side to side to get out of the ice, with its healing tanks. At 303 feet long and 60 feet wide it is not a very big ship but it is very powerful. At 24 years old this ship is still very modern because we have always used the most advanced technology when we build ships, boats. I hope this helps anyone that need more after watching this video.

Why should they?
It is not possible for all ships to have a jet stream propulsion system as it does not suits all size of ships

Ships aren’t designed for speed, they’re designed for heavy load, so they can stick to propellers.
Do over....Text over photos, etc. You can voice over the information, and just show the pictures without special effects. Titanic info wrong, but a good start

Each PROPELER BLADE of YAMATO is 5 metres long and she was not in this video
The Olympic Series (MSC Oscar, Oliver and Zoe) all has one propeller with 10.3m x 5 blades.
However they entered service in 2015 so ....

I doubt these are the biggest. Supertankers only use one huge propeller to propel themselves forward and I do believe they are bigger.
+James Shunt I think Emma Maersk still has the biggest propeller because she is more powerful and therefore faster than any other, even bigger merchant ship. These supertankers are less powerful. The diesel engine of Emma Maersk is the biggest ever made. But I don't think that ships like Oasis of the Seas should be on this list.

+tibchy144 She wasn't so powerful, she had "only" 50 000 hp and a speed of 16 knots. Emma Maersk has almost 150 000 hp (combined) and a speed of 25.5 knots. But this list lies a lot. Cruise ships like Oasis of the Seas and Carnival Elation shouldn't be on this list.

It seems to me that propellers and (in navy ships) screws are obsolete technology simply hanging on decade by decade. Roll film is history, ditto for analog computers, steam locomotives, radial aircraft engines, tungsten light bulbs, diesel powered tanks...the list is endless. Yet, ship propellers similar those used 170 years ago are still in use. They are noisy and inefficient. Modern , top secret submarines are finally shedding this spinning fin at the stern. There are even experiments with 'front wheel drive' in progress. Propellers are dinosaurs to be replaced in the next 100 years.
I don't think so.
