Great list, MIke! I knew some, such as "The writing on the wall", and didn't know some like "Die Hard". However, I have to take issue with "between a rock and a hard place". That actually goes way back to Greek mythology, specifically the myth of the Argonauts, who had to steer their way between a pair of rocks called Scylla and Charibdis, which would crash together whenever a ship sailed between them, destroying the ship.

I used to work in a convenience store when you had to be 18 to buy tobacco products. My shift ended at 10:00PM, and my replacement had come in to start her shift. A kid came in and asked for a Dutch Masters. It was the day before his 18th birthday. When she wouldn't sell him the DM, he said "But I'll be 18 in 2 hours. That's close." Unfortunately, she missed the chance to tell him:
    "Close, but no cigar."

Ben Jonson is actually English (Though he could be Half Scots as he apparently claimed that his Paternal Grandfather was a member of the Johnston family iofAnnadalè in Scotland.)
