Great list, MIke! I knew some, such as "The writing on the wall", and didn't know some like "Die Hard". However, I have to take issue with "between a rock and a hard place". That actually goes way back to Greek mythology, specifically the myth of the Argonauts, who had to steer their way between a pair of rocks called Scylla and Charibdis, which would crash together whenever a ship sailed between them, destroying the ship.
I used to work in a convenience store when you had to be 18 to buy tobacco products. My shift ended at 10:00PM, and my replacement had come in to start her shift. A kid came in and asked for a Dutch Masters. It was the day before his 18th birthday. When she wouldn't sell him the DM, he said "But I'll be 18 in 2 hours. That's close." Unfortunately, she missed the chance to tell him: "Close, but no cigar."
I came here to say how much i enjoy List 25 and how much work you put into each one. I saw that you have the new channel and immediately subscribed to it. I know your particular take on things will keep it interesting.
Another expression that we use a lot, “blown to smithereens” comes from, again, Ireland. It comes from the Irish word “smidirín” or “smidiríní” which means fragments or pieces
On several of those I had previously heard other theories. The "pale" one for example I heard was about a wall of wooden poles driven into the ground. Inside that was safe and outside it was danger.
Barking up the wrong tree. I watch my dog do it all the time. Dog barks at the tree the squirrel ran up. Squirrel jumps to other trees. I started out as the right tree.
Mike told this in a previous video. Old machine guns used bullets packed in 27-foot belts. If all the bullets were used in one burst, the gunner shot the whole nine yards.
"Whistling Up A Storm." A nautical term that sailors use to this day. Sailors NEVER whistle aboard a ship. It could cause a sudden storm. Mike, why aren't you wearing your USF gear ?? The Bulls won this weekend.
It was a British song written to make fun of us, just silly lyrics with no purpose. The continental army turned it into their marching song in defiance.
Sorry. You'll need to do your research again. Ben Jonson is actually English (Though he could be Half Scots as he apparently claimed that his Paternal Grandfather was a member of the Johnston family iofAnnadalè in Scotland.) I also believe that he is one of the 0eople claimed to have written Shakespeares plays alongside Marlowe.
It's beyond the veil not the pale that I am always curious about. I mean I guess it's curiosity was behind the bride's veil but that's the only explanation I can come up with.
Barking up the wrong tree isn't the only phrase coming from hunting dogs. A Red Herring. Fish were used to train scent hunting dogs. Essentially getting them to follow a false lead.
GLORY!!!'m favoured, $140K every 3weeks! And I am retired i can now give back to the locals in my community and also support God's work and the church. God bless America🇺🇸❤️
Hello, how do you achieve such biweekly returns? As a single parent i haven't been able to get my own house due to financial struggles, but my faith in God remains strong.
YES!!! That's exactly her name (Elizabeth Ann Larson) so many people have recommended highly about her and am just starting with her 😊 from Brisbane Australia🇦🇺
You're getting a few things wrong recently Mike. Example, Ben Jonson was an English playwright not Italian as confidently stated by you. Simple mistakes like this make people wonder how many other facts are incorrect in your presentation.
Imagine people actually believe a magic hand appeared and wrote on a wall. Humans truly are a gullible species. Those same people also think a snake talked and a woman turned to salt.

Dressed to kill, let go out the steam, saved by the bell
Why do these comments insist on showing up? No one wants to hear about this scam!
Its crazy how our old sayings come from so long ago. Its amazing how they have stuck with us.
There are plenty that are way older than a couple hundred years. EG Tilting at windmills comes from Don Quixote
Many also come from Shakespere.

Steal one's thunder origin is very interesting!
You avoided buying a 'pig in a poke' by making the seller 'let the cat out of the bag' before you made the purchase.
Great list, Mike.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I was surprised when a friend had never heard that expression.
On several of those I had previously heard other theories. The "pale" one for example I heard was about a wall of wooden poles driven into the ground. Inside that was safe and outside it was danger.
Never caught a video this early before. Hey Mike, love you content.
Interesting video as always, Mike! 😁
If you haven't already, can you do a video on Cockney rhyming slang phrases?
Ended with that’s a wrap. But never said where that was from ! Lol
i was taught rock and a hard place came from homer's being between Scylla and Charybdis
My ex wife's dad would say. "Go to Court and have the Judge tell you how the cow ate the cabbage."😵💫😟🙁
A “rock and a hard place” is also based on the iliad with the phrase he was caught between Scylla and Charybdis.
Barking up the wrong tree. I watch my dog do it all the time. Dog barks at the tree the squirrel ran up. Squirrel jumps to other trees. I started out as the right tree.
The whole nine yards is a mysterious one that William Safire, the New York Times language columnist, puzzled over...
Mike told this in a previous video. Old machine guns used bullets packed in 27-foot belts. If all the bullets were used in one burst, the gunner shot the whole nine yards.

Mike, why aren't you wearing your USF gear ?? The Bulls won this weekend.
interesting meaning of mad hatter modern version is cat dancing disease also caused by mercury in fish
Interesting facts
Here's one: "I like the cut of your jib."
#4 Pig in a poke also comes from this practice. 🤓😎✌🏻
Six of one, half dozen of another. 😅
Always thought that "Let the cat out of the bag" referred to the cat o'nine tails (whip used for punishment on ships),kept in a bag between uses.
Another way of saying that is "spill the beans"... lol
Bruce Willis or a Sears Car Battery. 🚗 😅
what about the song Yankee Doodle dandy, why did he stick a feather in his hat & called it macaroni??
It was a British song written to make fun of us, just silly lyrics with no purpose. The continental army turned it into their marching song in defiance.
Macaroni was a club of fancy dressing men in the 18th century. Why does no one Google these things?
Is Die Hard a christmas movie Mike?
Honestly, I haven't thought about it that much lol.
Fool's Gold is NOT a metal, but an Iron Sulfide.
I absolutely hate when it's cold outside and you get your feet wet that's horrible
Huh the thunder stealing idiom really disappointed me. I thought it was going to mean a battle between Thor and Zeus or some other gods ....
How about the phrases on your T. shirt raise the flags where they come from
How about, "In a pig's eye!"
A Pickle being called a "cucumber based snack" may be an accurate statement but still feels wildly absurd.
Clearly arms and legs were worth a lot more in the past. My local recycling place won't give me more than a dollar for this perfectly good elbow.

I'm sure there will be a lot of English people who are surprised to learn that Ben Johnson was Italian!
"Break a leg!"
A brothel is hard place. 😅
Coach and four. 😅
Then they would say i felt unwell. 😅
😊
What is the origin of "Hold you hard" and old known English phrase.
I thought Skin O my Teeth came from the Megadeth song jk lol
"Bury the hatchet" reminds me of Dumb and Dumber 1 😛
You know what I mean
Where did that come from
I notice your T Shirt! Just remember… We had Brady first!!
Do you mean.....Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Tom Brady?
@@list25 😂🤪🥴
When people would ask my dad how he was he would always respond perpendicular.
Engish=thumbnail?
Whoops. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll get on that.
I cleaned my ears, and got a whole ball of wax. 😅
I'd wish things would cost an arm and a leg for the value of one was anyway. LOL
It's beyond the veil not the pale that I am always curious about. I mean I guess it's curiosity was behind the bride's veil but that's the only explanation I can come up with.
Beyond the veil comes from the idea that there is but a thin veil between this world and the next
@jessgunn6639 yeah I know that I was talking about the origins of the phrase.
First!
Barking up the wrong tree isn't the only phrase coming from hunting dogs. A Red Herring. Fish were used to train scent hunting dogs. Essentially getting them to follow a false lead.
11:14 bless you for saying onondaga correctly
Tired of toeing the line.😅

Excuse me for real?,how is that
possible I have struggling
financially, how was that possible?
Thanks to my co-worker whom God used to give a great opportunity of crossing paths with 'Mrs ELIZABETH ANN LARSON'.
YES!!! That's exactly her name (Elizabeth Ann Larson) so many people have recommended highly about her and am just starting with her 😊 from Brisbane Australia🇦🇺
I have heard a lot of wonderful things about Elizabeth Ann on the news but didn't believe it until now. I'm definitely trying her out
So, I guess that means the 2024 election puts us "between a rock and a hard place. " 😅
Cooling your heels, dragging your feet. 😅
Funny, #2 is the Only one I never heard.
You're getting a few things wrong recently Mike. Example, Ben Jonson was an English playwright not Italian as confidently stated by you. Simple mistakes like this make people wonder how many other facts are incorrect in your presentation.
Now, it's caught in a pickleball. 😅
