1999 I met Adrian after a show in Essen Germany and asked about this riff and song. He said to me the idea for the main riff came from the writing session of Back in the village from powerslave. A Year later he added the pre chorus and chorus and finished the lyrics another year later. He thought the main riff would be too heavy for Maiden, but Steve liked it.,,,,also the first part from the solo sounds like the first part of The Wicker Man solo :)

That's amazing and it makes perfect sense because there is definitely a similarity with the Back in the Village riff! Both are pedal point riffs with a rolling kind of feel and in the same position too! Thanks for sharing that conversation. That must have been so cool!! Cheers man 🤜🤛

That's great you still remember this conversation after 21 years. Indeed the riff reminds Back in the village song. Probably rock 70's inspired Adrian to write it. 🤘

I always wondered how the hell they played this and I was right in thinking there was 2 different riffs overlayed because there was no humanly way possible to get that with one hand
This gives me a new appreciation for this song and the band members as a whole. God damn. You have to have 2 guitar players to make this happen

Maiden's music is deceptively simple. Their songs are easy to play until you start to really delve into them and break them down. There is a lot more finesse in their playing and arranging than is first apparent... and that's pretty cool! 😁

Frankly, your first impression was actually most correct. I too learned it that way to overcome the overdubs.
Let me explain...If you are just ONE guitarist, you cannot play both parts simultaneously. Therefore, the A string version still “hits the ear” better because it mimics both parts. (Also, you need to dial in the chorus to mimic the GK amp’s chorus and sack that incorrect phaser effect going on.)
I would play the “new version riff” at the very intro, then shift to the “classic A string version” once things kick in...as a lone guitarist, this would help one swim the Seas of Madness re: these killer dual riffs.

The most recent one is the second lick in Back In The Village - the tab says to pull off from the 5th fret E string before it starts again but you can clearly hear his pulling off from the 3rd fret. Still a great book for the most part!

Very unique riff. I played guitar for years and somehow that riff still gives me hard time

The one you played 1st from the book sounded the best...

Isn’t one of the guitars doing an A harmony on the 7th fret D string each time the note falls on E in the intro of the song? Like the verses are just like you showed us but the very intro has that A

More Adrian since it's his song 😁

@@LicksOfTheBeast If Adrian instructed how Dave should track his rhythm guitars, then yes, but I kind of doubt that. Dave has always been kind of a 1st beat/downbeat player, which is what funk accentuates so clearly. Killer song nonetheless though! :D

@@Nghilifa Aaah you meant Dave's part specifically....good point! Now the question is wad that all prearranged by Adrian, did Dave funk it up a bit or did he just decide to follow Steve's bass line? These are conversations I'd love to have with the guys someday! ☺️

Great video and i agree with everything, except for the main riff that adrian plays. This main riff has been a pain for me too and trying to find how its actually played, as smith and murray both play it differently, thus "creating the madness" in a way. My opinion of the riff is that Adrian actually plays the same riff as dave, BUT he is accenting the second highest note of the "repeating lick" (if we see the moment he plays E on the A-string as the end of one repeat) once more when the next repeat starts, not continously as you suggested. There is a video from gothenburg -86 where is a longer bit of close up from Adrian playing it and it seems to me that he doesnt repeat the second highest note that many times as you suggested. Also this one clip you can hear it a bit clearer than most of the old live shows that are available on youtube (th-cam.com/video/0Lks5XvHgaQ/w-d-xo.html).
