An S209 has almost become my third STi. Almost, if it was not for someone offering 12K$ over my 9K$ over the sticker price for this absolute Crystal White beauty. I still own my 2018 STi, and there's just no way my next car won't be another STi. I am a 100% die hard loyal fan to Subaru. I remember how I felt when the dealer delivered me my first STi, it was on a perfect summer day, I was having so much tears of joy for hours on my maiden ride. It was absolutely blissfull and it will remain a lifelong memory of pure joy. Subaru has totally won my heart, I will always be a fan. Thank you Subaru for all the years of joy, fun, performance and reliability.
I have had two STI's and would never be able to get my hands on a S209 but it makes me thankful to see the amount of work and fine tuning they went through to release such a limited number of these cars. I love my car and I can't see myself ever NOT driving a Subaru again.
This is such a great story, and it shows so much of what makes a Subaru a Subaru. Thank you for documenting this, and for letting us see so many of the details and work that went into making the S209 a reality!
Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos. I think this will help explain to the mass majority people that why it cost so much more than a standard trim WRX-STI. Just the certification itself cannot be cheap at all. Too bad the forged piston was not used. Perhaps the next gen WRX-STI will have the answer and perhaps forged internals for next gen model.
Well done guys, thank you for being one of the last brands to cater to purists. Hopefully that lame brand Mitsubishi will take some notes and bring back the Evo, until then you guys are the king of the streets
Blaine Petkau how come? Evo x 2015 is only 291hp and only 5speed manual.. more gear is better... maybe evo can win in short distance but i dont think evo stock can win to sti stock in long race 😂😂😅
@@ratfink8466 Alright kid i'll give you the run down. Factory power figures don't mean alot, for example most 305hp STi's get tuned up to 400 in the aftermarket. Now lets talk about that Evo X you mentioned, it has a 4B11t engine, which has 20% smaller displacement than the EJ25 in the STi, and it makes 96% of the power, and MORE TORQUE than the STi while having a 20% disadvantage. Now lets talk aftermarket, while an EJ25 may be somewhat reliable at its 305 factory output, the Evo X's 4B11t is known to take 500, yes 500hp equally or more reliably than the EJ25 can take 305. Keep in that in mind. You also mentioned the 5 speed, and this is what throws me off. You seem to think more gears means more FAST right? No. The reason for more gears in more ECONOMY. for example, a 5 speed can have larger, stronger gears than a 6 speed while being less weight, less complex, while being much stronger. Consider the Evo 9 MR, Mitsubishi made a 6 speed and it was good, but every single racer switched it out for a 5 speed because they are better for racing,. the 6 speed is better for the street. I hope this has expanded your mind kid. Also, the Earth is Flat, look into it!
I love my #21 and find myself driving it way more than other more expensive cars in my garage...breath taking performance but it really needs to get on a track...roll on May :)

They had problems with forged pistons. Most likely emissions forced them to have a tight cold piston to wall clearance. Forged piston thermal expansion ratio is huge, which damaged the pistons.
What a satisfying documentary to mute all the troll mouths complaining its 65k$ price like “65k lol no thanks”. Price reflects to the hundreds of hours of R&D behind and ability to meet US strict regulations while preserving the s-model STi performance. I didn’t think it was a true JDM sti initially due to the EJ25 motor but the engineers had their reasons due to US terrain so okay. Hope s209 can keep its authenticity and not get modded then have engine blown like the norm does
I've seen pics in forums of stickers from different states... between $75k - $108k?! Seriously?! I missed out on the Type RA. I guess I won't be getting one of these either. My 2nd STI (VAB-C) needs a partner :( After seeing the price of the S209, I wonder if you can just buy all the chassis/suspension upgrades separately.
You have missed the point, the S209 is a limited edition STI only, with 209 cars ever made it is only for the truest purists out there. Very much like the 22B which is now considered holy grail.
Ah, that makes sense now. Mass produced EJ25 for the price of the built engine. It is really unfortunate that bespoke rotating assembly components never made it to the final car, but their price did. Still a great car nonetheless.
We don't know that. The originally planned price may have been higher, they didn't announce pricing until well after the forged pistons had been dropped.

No forged internals due to durability resorting back to the failure prone cast pistons very disappointed. All the years of rally racing, road racing and you can't select a higher quality piston. So now if you really want to track the s209 you have to pull the motor and have higher quality forged pistons installed.

With these new pistons, even though they are mass produced now, are enabling tuners to push more power reliability with the EJ25.
I don't like how you test EJ257 100k km durability "in fast way". It's not very objective. I know: plans, goals, deadlines, money etc. Life sucks. :) But EJ207 was developed and improved year by year, not "in fast way", ...there is durability!!! That's why I like JDM Sti special models and I own one. But I also like the theory that there are huge mountains in US, that's why EJ207 is for Japanese market and EJ257 for "others". :)
You have the ej257 in the US because of emissions. The EJ207 does not pass your emission standards because of california. So they seat the pistons rings tight, less blow by, more reliability issues. Europe (besides UK) japan and some other countries were the only ones to get the 207 from facotry. The EJ257 pistons are also huge, like v8 size pistons.
@@matt260 No, you are wrong. You can't get e.g. sti spec c for EU. Ej257 is the same engine as Ej207, just bored to 2.5 liters. There are tiny sidewalls - and that is why there are durability issues if you tune it... So drive stock, will be no probs. It is for US, because US people need low end torque - that is the second reason for durability issues. You can pass emissions with ej207 with only one cat with no probs. In ej257 because of 2.5 liters you need two cats to do it. :D Jdm Ej207 is the best subaru engine ever. That is why Japanese used it for themselves till nowadays... :D Anyway Japanese could use two cats in Ej207 and egr shit if they wanted, if you think there were some emission problems. But they decided to give world shity 2.5 engine instead. :D

@@jonathanb1987 Exactly. The 2015-2018 pistons are lesser quality cast than current. Made with higher tolerances regarding rings, in order to pass US emissions. If it wasn't for rediculous US emissions. The EJ257 would have better internals, and more than likely, would have never experienced Ringland failure.
No forged pistons, sorry. Must suffered the same fate as the STi version 7 with factory forged pistons. Loosen up the clearance. Heat expands the pistons much, especially at almost a 4 inch bore, more material that expands.

Every article I find in reference to the S209s internals all say they still used forged pistons and rods, even subarus website says it as well. I cant find any info on the S209 using the Type RAs cast piston. Please link credible references to support your post.
Great story, great car, great try. But when dealers started marking up all of the S209s well the dream of owning one died. You should have done a normal lottery across the US as you do in Japan and cut out the dealer mark ups. Looks like ill be looking at a New vette instead.
The S209 has replaced the 22B for me as number 1, they made sure American enthusiasts knew they kept us in mind... You can have a faster car for the same price, maybe cheaper, but it won't be hand made, it will be made for a hardcore driver, not a hardcore enthusiast. Thats the difference, this is a car made for the Enthusiast, not for the guy who wants a performance car to modify. You don't write on the back of a love letter...
$90,000 car if it was sold in Canada...For some sticky tires and an engine that didn't work out? I'm not holding out hope for a revamped STi that mere mortals can afford anytime soon when they have just released this car.
