    Colorado has more Subarus per capita than anywhere else on Earth and for good reasons; reliable, extremely practical yet fun, all wheel drive for bad weather and turbo for high altitude. The roads are thick with them here and I think it's great!

    Great video, great history lesson too. Subarus have been phenomenally successful here in Australia too. I remember lusting after the Brumby 4WD ute when I was in high school (now a cult classic), and trying to convince my older sister to buy a Leone coupe in the early '80s (had whacky features like digital dashboard, pillarless doors), which are rare as rockinghorse shit these days. As things turn out, my last three family cars (driven by my wife) have all been Foresters (MY'12, '14, '19). I'm in the process of finding an XV for my daughter's first car, if I can't find an acceptable one, not she'll be getting a Forester too... Subaru owners have a fair bit in common with Alfisti as "enthusiastic" devotees of the brand. Me - I'm both (all my personal cars in the last 12 years have been Alfas, and I currently have two - Alfetta GTV and 156 GTA).

    I liked this video, but I hate the fact that every video about Subaru leaves out a bunch of models from the late 70's until early 90's as though its an embarrassment. My mom had a 1986 GL sedan, my dad had a 1978 Brat that he drove into the mid 80's, my step dad later got a 1993 Loyale and I had a 1988 DL wagon. Yes they were quirky and under powered, but they got us through bad weather back in the day.

    • @howardsimpson489

      Owning a Subaru was not all about power or performance. We owned several because they were 4wd wagons.. Our off grid home had very rough access but the 1.8 L Leone wagons could get in unless the flooded stream was too deep. However, the alloy engine was so light that 2wd (front) drive was hopeless in slippery conditions especially if there was a load in the back. 4wd usually got thru. Finally started using a Nissan Terrano which was more appropriate. The Subarus were quite reliable but as in the video, the hydraulic tappets were erratic, some times none, sometimes most would rattle away usually shutting up when the engines warmed up. The other common fault was headgaskets that let oil into the coolant water. A turd of a job to fix, radiator sealer additive worked for a while. The frameless door windows let rain in as their fit got old. They seemed unlikely vehicles to end up racing.

      @kirkedwards365 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@howardsimpson489 I've owned more Subarus in many configurations. Some I drove in stock condition, but most were modified for better operation. One I had was a 1988 Loyal sedan, it came into my possession with a fried engine, customer drove it 40 miles with no coolant in it. Anyway, opened the engine and had machine work done and replaced the heads, it had a turbo, from factory, and it was still ok. When it was done it was one of my favourites to drive. When you got to 50mph the air ride went down 2 inches and when you put it in 4wd it went up almost 2 inches. This engine also had the noisey lifters you mentioned, but 10w-30 oil and 1/2 at ATF, and it never made a peep. In regards, it's nice to see others having owned multiple Subys. Have a great day!

    Nice video. I first heard about Subaru in the U.S. was early 1970s. It was an opposing 4-cyl, stick-shift and front-wheel drive. It had a radiator/heater combo via an air duct. I was quiet, smooth, reasonably fast. At the time, I was a newbie driver and could not afford new cars. I did recommended this to a middle-aged person, who bought one. The car ran fine for many years. I did not know that Subaru was making tiny car (really tiny) with 360cc 2-cyl. I think Honda also came to the U.S. with a 600cc 2-cyl (?). Those cars did not do well in the U.S. because U.S. at the time, was making much larger/heavier cars with monster engine. So the Japanese cars appear like toys.

    0:52 Nothing (probably). That's an EJ253 SOHC engine. They use a rocker arm instead of the valve buckets. If a DOHC engine makes that noise, then it's piston slap. But the SOHC engines make a very similar noise (it's different, but when it comes to audio on a YT video, it's often VERY difficult to tell the difference). It IS possible for a SOHC engine to experience piston slap BUT it's usually just normal rocker noise for the most part.
    I will say that if that is rocker noise, the valve clearance needs to be adjusted (but don't worry, despite it being an interference engine, it's not normal for the clearance to get so out of whack that the valve impact the piston).

I visited multiple dealerships in this order: Datsun, Honda, Toyota, and Subaru (US autos didn’t have anything comparable, Euro autos were out of my price range). The sheet steel of the first three didn’t compare to the Subaru. So I bought a Subaru GL 4wd wagon. Ugly as heck, but better body steel and the others didn’t have a 4wd model available.

    I hope you dont mix the things! Subaru wasnt a sucssesfull brand until getted into rallying! And since that era Subaru never made nothing significant! Like other brands Subaru made the Evo's better saying evolutions from the winner models and nothing more! And died to sport cars! Subaru Mitsubishi Toyota sleped over the victories and nowadays (unfortunely because i love that cars) are a simple memory of car rallying

    Love these cars. As a mechanic, their poorly designed engines eat head gaskets. They paid for my house and kids education. Still have a line of them at the shop waiting for parts. Thanks

      Even though head gasket issues are for the most part a thing of the past, Subaru hater will always bring it up as an ongoing problem. Keep up on maintenance and they will last a long time. I've had two and love everything about them.

    To downplay the War Crimes of the Japanese in WWII is pretty Shitty. They got off much lighter than Germany because of the American occupation of Japan. Read up some on the Rape of Nanking. That statement alone colors this whole video.

    Your take on Japanese War Criminals is astonishingly obtuse. You obviously have no knowledge of the atrocities committed by the Japanese military upon every single other Asian nation, South Pacific Islander, Asiatic Islanders,and every nation’s Prisoner’s of War! Your foolish statements and lack of research on the subject disgusts me.

      @@sheikhshit I would agree with you except he brought up the fact that rumors of miss givings by the Japanese were untrue. If you listen to the story, this is obviously a Japanese promotional film and they don’t educate their citizens on what they did in World War II. Don’t try and educate me on something that I learned about and have studied for years. Again, they brought it up, I’m clearing it up.

      Get real, no country is without their own closet killers.
