  • In this long awaited video, I discuss how we found the Isabella Cirrus 400 awning, when we used it for a week back in August. I also wrote a companion piece on our blog that compares this awning with the others we have owned in the past :
    the-trudgians.com/isabella-ci...
The video captures how we feel, our experience and how we liked / disliked parts of the awning. For more information on this awning visit the Isabella Website :

We have the same awning, we were lucky to find a used one with annexe, saved us a fortune...
You're right, it is heavy and the "jean" type material can scuff your hands. I have to say, Isabella is quality stuff and if you can afford it, it's worth the money..
Isabella curtains are absolute genius! Good indepth review, thanks.

Nice to see some more videos from you, Dan. We have a Kampa Air Pro 260 Plus due to the shape of our van roof. The extension to the front gives us a wet weather gear storage without intruding into the living space. Also we have a bedroom extension to the rear which gives us accomodation for when our teen age grandson joins us for an adventure. I can just about put it up alone, as I'm now the ripe old age of 70, but ideally, is better with two persons. It was realatively inexpensive but works for us. Always good though to see the greener grass, so to speak. but grass is grass. What works for one doesn't always work for others and your comparisons help the choices people make when spending on new accessories.

I’ve got a Dorema all seasons 390 air awning, had it nearly 7 years now, best thing ever, she hasn’t taken a head shot ever since. She loves it more than me 😊

    Hi Team Trudigan,
Funny that currently the Isabella Magnum and Cirrus do almost have the same price.
I'm a single mom with a limited budget and can't afford bad investments, so my decision-making process is quite lengthy. This also because I attach great importance to good quality and prefer to save a little longer. It was great when my paid overtime credit allowed me to buy a caravan for my small family and our very well-behaved dog. This makes traveling incredibly easier. I lack experience when it comes to caravans and accessories and it's great to benefit from feedback like yours. Thank you so much for that! I don't know how long my 12-year-old Renault Espace will last, so I'm saving up for an SUV. My dream would be a white Hyundai Santa Fe with a panoramic roof and I'm excited to see what the reality will be. Life is good to me and fortunately I can be happy even if not all my dreams come true. *Lol* A mover, a rear-view camera and an awning are also on my wish list and I started my investigation with the awnings. I'm looking for a 4-meter-wide awning and the Isabella Air Cirrus North 400, at 275 cm, is deeper than many other models. Since I might have to put it up alone should I for once not find one of those kind helpers on the pitch, I wanted to ask you, whether you think this can be done and how much time you estimate this would take?
Did you have the opportunity to test the Cirrus with wind and lower temperatures? We love holiday destinations with character and things can get a bit rough there, like last summer in Denmark or before that all the way up in Bretagne, France with only 8 °C in the mornings in the month of July. Your explanation about the cushion instead of the pressure rod on the caravan wall was very helpful.
I would love to hear from you, and I wish you a great day!
    Sanni

Thank you for the review. I have bought a caravan this year after 22 years absence. Of course I wanted an awning and my daughter convinced me to try air awning(I had never heard of them). My last one 1990 s was an isabella pole which had memories of arguments, holding poles in the wind and bad start to the hols. So I bought a Vango Balletto, as daughter would be assembling it with her partner. I really like it, but, I will be selling it as I was nt aware they needed topping up after a week or two.Mine is on a seasonal pitch, but it was no problem for me to do this , just I realise I needed to upgrade. After a season with the vango I know now what I need to look for. I definitely will have another air beam awning and although I know Isabella are good there are others on the market. I shall enjoy mooching around the NEC exhibits. But I am sold on air beam,so it was useful listening to your review.

Hi Dan, a very fair review. We bought an Air Cirrus 400 about 2 months ago and used it for the first time on a hard standing in Northumberland, like you we were fairly daunted at the prospect of putting it up but were suprised as to how easily it went into the rail. We actually bought an extra awning bag, as we had read that it was so heavy and people were removing all the panels. The spare bag remains empty, not needed, the two of us managed it complete. We kept our Isabella poled awning just in case, but that is now going to be sold. We both love the Cirrus.

Dan I would like to thank you so much for your honesty with this review, I was like yourself a poled awning man but I’m moving with the times now and looking at an air awning, and yes particularly the Isabella Cirrus North 400, I’m going to the NEC on Tuesday to have a look at this awning in particular as well as a few other Isabella accessories, hopefully I’ll see you there for a quick chat.

Great review thanks Dan. We couldn't decide between the Air Cirrus North 400 and a poled awning when we started caravanning. Eventually we bought an Isabella Capri North (which has been brilliant - just takes time to put it up!) and then bought an ex-demo Isabella Air Arc Sun Canopy which has become our default sun-shade / rain protection for most the year. Final choice came down to cost and weight.

A good review tbh... our very close friends have this awning, and we have the Dometic Club 390 All Season (Not to be confused with the Air Pro fabric), which we believe is a direct comparison. The Cirrus Air has some great touches, some i think of are, the zips are far smooth and better than the Dometic, the very smart connection hooks for the side extensions so it takes the weight of the extension while you zip the extension on, the dometic is a just a very heavy duty zip and can be a real struggle imo. But then the Dometic is better than the Isabella in ways... the Domentic has more side options like a sun wing (canopy) the cirrus doesnt, the Dometic is a far better design for a roof lining, its just toggles you pop in, the isabella you need to tie each one, which means doing 30 little bows above your head. The Dometic has a far better side sealing system, traditional poles with sponge padding, and limpets if you want the best seal, yet the Isabella i personally dont think is great all... and have seen the odd dogs head poke round! haha! What I can say is that we have both owned the Dometic 390 All Season & Isabella Cirrus 400 for coming upto 2yrs, and they are still in mint condition, rock solid when inflated and we use them all year round... Ours is easily used every month of the year!... But you do still make the final vaild point... COST! These are serious money for an awning... and in a totally different league to many others!

This year Paid £590 for a brand new steel poled Camptec 4m x 3m all season porch awning its been on my van, on my seasonal pitch since February, high up in the Scottish Campsie Hills, it has withstood all weather, its been flooded up to the windows, battered with wind and biblical rain, not one leak or drip, zips all great, nice removable curtains and heavy duty material, extra locking tab system on the steel poles is excellent, the poles do not budge in high winds, its fantastic and it was so cheap, I'm going to leave it up till December.
This little Porch awning just laughs at the wind.
Many of my neighbors have lost their awnings some even ripped in half, aluminium poled awnings fared the worst next was air.
Like Dan we also fell into the Trap of High End Air Awnings but they were not value for money they all did not last any length of time without constant repairs..
Steel framed poled awnings in my opinion are the best, they will not bend like aluminium poled awnings in a wind with wet heavy material or collapse in half like aluminium poles damaging your van side panels.
Air Awnings cannot withstand the elements in my opinion they are only for weekend or a few weeks away not to be left pitched for any length of time and exposed too especially extremely hot weather.
Steel poles all the way for me to hell with the slight extra weight.

A very fair review Dan. I don't think we could justify £2400 for an awning. We have a Kampa air 400 pro with extension, purchased 2nd hand and it's approximately 4 years old and still going well. I think one big thing with air awnings is looking after them.

We had a Leisurewize Ontario 390 Air awning when we had our last caravan (Bailey Jive 570/6). We went to Glenbarr right on the Scottish Atlantic coast (step out of the awning and you're on the beach). The lady who welcomed us on arrival stepped inside the air awning and with a slight grin said "Oh , you've got an air awning". i said "yes , why is that?" to which she replied "because there is no protection from the Atlantic weather here". 2 nights later we were up in the early hours frantically dismantling the awning in awful windy stormy weather. A few days later we put the awning back up but 1 of the vertical air bladders had burst and a repair patch didnt work as the tear was near a curved seam. Contacted Leisurwize who sent 3 air bladders but none fitted as the awning turned out to have been superseded and the new bladders didnt fit the damaged awning. As a result they replaced it with the newer superceeded awning which is a doddle to put up given the bladders now inflate from the outside about a foot up from the ground (the old one inflated at ground level inside at the bottom of each bladder).
Really like the new awning whuch we used in Dorest in 40C weather in August and will be using it in the Lake District in.a few weeks.
No way would I pay the price for the Isabella.
I was at a caravan dealer at Gosforth Park, Newcastle a month or so ago and they were selling new air awnings for £350 !
    Thumbs up for the video.

We upgraded all our caravan gear when we received a significant bequest following the death of my step-mother.
I had heard about the quality and longevity of Isabella awnings so, without too much thought (although following quite a few TH-cam videos!), we plumped for the Cirrus 400.
    1. You're absolutely right - it's bl**dy heavy - it just so happens that, to achieve the ideal nose weight, we have to put the awning on the floor in the lounge (not sure what CAMC would say about that!)
    2. Expensive? Yes but we were in a very fortunate position as outlined above (I shoud add that the other significant upgrade was the purchase of a Bailey Alicanto Grande Estoril)
    3. Heavy? Definitely - I had tried to persuade my wife that this was so easy I could do it myself - not getting it into the awning rail I can't!
    4. Pegging out etc - frankly this is where my relative inexperience shows. I never seem to get the drum tight sides and top that you see in videos (or other peoples' awnings!). Any suggestions for how I can learn this undoubted skill???? However, I strongly suspect this is me not the awning.
Conclusion - still learning to use it but, when it's up, I love it! The air beams are super strong and the whole thing feels solid.
Am I glad I bought it? YES!
    Thanks for the review Dan
P.S. The accessory bag is way way too big!!

Just enjoying our first weekend away with our brand new Cirrus 400 having converted from Kampa . Wow ! What a difference in quality!
It’s a big investment but we deemed it a long term investment so opted for the Velcro in floor and roof lining.
What can I say we have had lots of rain , all night in fact with Thunder and it’s the first awning ever that has not had any firm of leak or drip . The quality is there in really simple ways , the zips and size of them , the curtain system and the overall quality of the materials . Do we like it NOT arF! So much so I’ve just ordered an annex.
That said a constructive niggle is the roof liner , if honest it’s not as good as the Kampa equiv , having to tie every fitting is a bit out dated and when fitted it doesn’t look as good as the Kampa when fitted . Other that that love it , it was expensive to buy BUT will be the last awning we every need to buy.

Nice honest review Dan. When we got out new van last year, we decided on a new awning to replace are old kampa 330 poled awning. What did we go for, a new version Kampa 390 poled awning. Seen too many air awning either "popped" or come the morning, deflated due to the air temp. I'm sure somethng from Isabella wouldn't suffer this issue, bit for the price.... I know in 5 years time, the Kampa will still be going strong. (at the moment, wouldn't buy the air version either). It may take 10 mins longer to erect but poles are still the best option for us. ( can do this version on my own easily). (the new version has removable curtains :) )

Hi Dan, this is a great video as always….we have only been caravanning since 2020 so we are still very confused on awnings….we bought a Vango Varkala 520 first, which was okay, but a faff to inflate with all the beams being separate. We now have a Dometic Ace Air Pro 500s 2022 which we bought new for this year with loads of other Dometic bits, carpet, roof liner etc etc
It was between the Cirrus 400 and the Dometic but the Cirrus biggest size is 400 and we wanted 500 due to our caravan window position. But, yes, there is now a but, we are seriously considering starting again, selling the Dometic and going for a poled Isabella, full awning!! We were hoping that going to the show next week will help us decide….we experienced a couple of breaks this year where we were worried we had done the wrong thing putting up the awning due to the weather conditions…but observed pole awning owners happily sat in there awning without a care in the world…not sure what to do???? I felt sure pole was the way to go, after having had two air awnings, but now after this video I feel unsure again…..HEEEEEELP!!! 🙈 PS we are tourers and never site our van…..

Hi Dan, we have had our Isabella Air Cyrus 400 for 2 years, ex demo model so a good deal cheaper than new! Agree a heavy awning. We removed all the zip out panels before putting in the rail also store them in a separate bag. Ours is the older type with only one inflation point. Bit if a pain when deflating! Used recently in Scotland in very heavy rain with no leaks except the socks at the bottom of the air beam poles collected water inside! Overall very pleased with it.

We’ve had a magnum for 10 years, until 2 years ago , Isabella fans quality brilliant , so 2 years ago we nearly brought an air awning, but had taken some time analysing it. We decided to stick with the magnum. The decision was simply access, the air awning side panels are not interchangeable, so the door to the front opens directly onto the step into the caravan, also there is no option to have the door in the front panel. The door option with the magnum gives you 6 possible positions. It’s also gives us the option of an eclipse shade to the front of the awning. Also the eclipse can be used directly onto the side of the van when we stop for just a couple of nights and literally takes 15 minutes to put up.

Hello Dan, for me the advantage of an air awning is that at 75 I can still put one up single handed, I am not so sure that I could manage a poled awning though. The new storage yard is proposed to be near your yard somewhere nearer the road according to the owner of my yard in Lydiard Plain.

We have had poled awnings in the past and have had the poles come down..(hit my wife on the head😱) and it was her decision to purchase an air awning. I don't think we will go back to a full size pole awning as the air type seems to suit our caravan. Nice awning the Isabella Air 👍

Hi Dan, we have two Outdoor Revolution air awnings-one a Porchlite porch awning and the other, a 420. Have you enquired how long Isabella will be carrying spare parts? I ask because this summer the bladder blew out on our Porchlite and is basically un repairable-Diamond Products who I believe is the Outdoor Revolution parent company tell me that they don’t carry spare bladders for what is a 7 year old awning. I note that you mentioned inflation pressure-taken on board but I understand that this has been a fairly common problem this year. Any views?

  • @Coffeevaners
    @Coffeevaners ปีที่แล้ว

Very good review Dan. 👏 Interesting conversation about weight as we have a 420 Vango which is 2 years old and still going strong, easy to put up and with all the curtain problems you mention but we think it's too lightweight for all year use. Would spending an extra £1000 on an Isabella be worth the investment 🤔 Our biggest issue with most manufacturers is the fact that they readily discontinue models after a few years and stop supplying accessories and spares. Isabella on the other hand seem to have interchangeable bits that keep awnings in use for years and years. If we had the money and having had the Air Canopy Y for nearly 2 years, we'd buy one tomorrow without a flinch.

Looks a great awning Dan, if you went on an uneven pitch with a bit of caravan levelling needed, which you often get, I don't think you would be saying the same thing. The air beams are not adjustable like a good old fashioned pole awning, thus an air awning doesn't sit right on a uneven pitch. I thought air awnings where the future but we are done with any type of awning now, just the canopy from now on 🙂

I’ve been very tempted with this awning. Does the additional weight create any issues when packing away? Particularly once out of the awning rail?? maneuvering and folding?? I’ve a Kampa ace air 400, had it since 2016…. Hate it!
Had enough of the pole sleeves splitting, I’ve replaced 4 now! It feels cheap and is looking it’s age. However folding up is what I hate the most. Is it a real wrestle with the Isabella in comparison? Looking at ordering a new caravan from the show next week so don’t think my budget will stretch but wanted to know your thoughts on this regardless. Thanks Dan, all the best.

Hey Stuart, I didn't find any issues with the weight when man handling it to put it away. I must say the trick of unzipping the 2 sides to create a "T" worked really well. Thanks Dan for an honest, down to earth review. We've had a Kampa Ace Air 400 since May 2015 which has served us very well but has finally succumbed to sagging, albeit only in very heavy rain.
We’ve looked at the Isabella Cirrus as a replacement, but have one lingering question- the Kampa/Dometic end panels are interchangeable allowing the entrance door to be set more towards the front of the awning rather than close by the van. I noticed on your video that the Isabella entrance was close up to your van door, as it would be on ours (Coachman Laser 650). Was this ok or did you find yourself tripping over the step? When it’s raining hard it’s often good to be able to only open the awning door enough to get through rather than all the way. We’ve so used to the door being further from the van we can’t imagine how it would work differently!

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi David, you can set the front panel to be the door, if you like. I usually have the door where you saw it, and there is enough space to walk in and not get tripped up by the step. We have it this way for the dog and for cadac etc. if you can, pop into a retailer who has one and check it out. 👍

Hi Ian, great question - and i should have made that clearer. The Kampa we threw away, it was awful, the Rollaway lasted us until we moved to the Bailey caravan, where upon we wanted somthing different. The Vango quickly became pink and faded, and we switched to the Trinus.
We still have the Magnum, and that is our "current" awning, although i may have bought a Cirrus at the NEC show.
      Hope that helps.

Honestly couldn’t justify spending over £1000 for an awning, especially since we alternate between a porch awning and a canopy awning depending on where we go, how long we go for and what the weather is going to be like, i currently use a 2nd hand Kampa Rally air pro 330 and a Sunncamp 390 canopy, the Kampa has been brilliant in fairness and there are loads of accessories available, which was a deciding factor for us.
Before the Kampa, we had a Vango Montelena 400, really nice looking awning but was terrible in anything other than gusty winds, for me there is a design flaw on that awning with the centre airbeam at the front, when the wind hits it front on, it pushes the airbeam off the Velcro at the top, bending the support beams in the roof to the point that the tie wraps break, the zips open and the air bladder is no longer contained within the sleeve, my suggestion would be for the storm strap to be relocated higher up the central air beam or to have two straps on the centre beam, the lower one and a new higher one,so couldn’t wait to sell it, lost about £700 in the space of 12 months on it!
Quite fancy a Magnum when we get rid of the Kampa but would probably go 2nd hand again, having been burnt once with a new awning i’d rather not waste too much money again!!!

Yeah - I do have that, but not used it. We’re heading off in Sept for a hard standing pitch, we will prob use it then.

@@TheTrudgians I think I’m going to put an existing thin groundsheet underneath it and we have a Royal 4m x 2.5m carpet to go inside.
Really impressed with the quality of the Cirrus compared to Kampa

Hello again Dan, thanks again for a very fair and comprehensive review! We are currently comparing the two Isabella’s featured, against a third Isabella, the Capri which is a full awning.
I am interested to know your thoughts on full awnings, noting that none of your have been, although you have have had annexes, if you would please? Thanks Dan

      Hi,
We have used a full awning a couple of times, and when we did use them, it provided a huge amount of space. The reality is this, the initial pulling fabric through the awning rail is about the same as an air awning in terms of weight. but this can be lightened by removing the panels.
When erecting the awning, it is as much hard work as a porch poled awning, just bigger and perhaps an extra set of roof supports. The most work is pegging the thing out, making sure all the panels are taught.
A full awning provides so much space, it was partly for this reason why we didnt continue with it - it was too big for our needs.
As with any poled awning, the seperation of poles and fabric is great for getting that perfect loading, half in the car, half in the caravan.
Isabella awnings are in my opinion brilliant, and if you look after it - it will last you for years to come.

I bought the Magnum last year, I wish I had gone for this one instead.I’ve seen people put this one up and it’s so much quicker and easier

    Great to see you Dan.
Could you please explain to me why your Magnum only lasted a couple of years? We are seasonal pitch caravanners and our Magnum is up from March to the beginning of September, and it's as hood as new. This is our second Magnum and this one is 4 seasons old.
    Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Leslie, sure - we’ve only owned it a couple of years. I anticipate it’ll be with us for many years to come. 👍

great review no no air awning will not sit on the side of my 26' bailey for the 8 months or so through 90 mph winds.... like my Inaca does. this awning is now 8 years old and has done 6 seasons for me. Inaca or Isabelle is what i will replace it with as its now starting to show its age

The only reason we go an Air awning was I was getting hit on the head by the poles, ours is a Kampa,

Great review. Especially the discussion on pegging maybe a more in-depth video on pegging methods is required.

The word that springs immediately to mind is too! Too expensive , too heavy and too likely to suffer bladders issues in the longer term. Also Air awnings struggle to cope with uneven ground. Never again for me! I am on my 2nd kampa (now dometic) poled rally pro with the extra monsoon poles and have never had an issue. The only reason im on my 2nd is the first wouldn’t fit my new caravan so i gave it to my mate who is still using it. And, there at least half the price of air equivalents.

It’s a no to air awnings for us regardless of price , we found they don’t last as long as the poled , you can buy much lighter carbon fibre poles these days

The "awning" word count in this one is VERY high. Once you notice how often it's said, it's hilarious.

Wow look at the price , are you kidding? More then twice a kampa

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  ปีที่แล้ว

To be fair, that Kampa price was the price we paid back in 2014, but air awnings in general are more expensive than pole.
Also, Isabella are not traditionally the cheapest awning on the market, but they do last. - i will be interested to see how many of these Cirrus awnings will still be in use in 10 years time.
      Take care
      Dan

I thought the same and have had two Kampa/Dometic awnings, but the old saying you get what you pay for is absolutely true in this case. There is no comparison in the material and build...

We’ve a large dorema air awning and it’s at least 4 years old, been up for 12 months constantly over covid and is still great. It’s been water proofed once but I can’t recommend it enough but only one downside is obviously weight. A must buy though is an electric pump which makes putting it up a dream.

then maybe you should have done some research first rather than being negative about a product that you doesnt fit you. I have one and its perfect.
