My uncle was in the navy. He was a navy seal. When the navy brought back the navy seals. He was working on something on the bottom of the ocean. He had a deep sea suit on. He said he was working and everything went black. They brought him back to the boat. A shark had his head in his mouth. They killed the shark. My uncle had to be in a depression chamber for two weeks. He had the scar's on his upper back and chest. The only thing that saved him was the suite. He was discharged from the navy. Because he couldn't dive anymore. I don't remember seeing him in the ocean but he would swim in the river. We lost him in 2016. He was my hero.

@@shortferal he never knew what kind of shark. They brought him up to quick. That might have been what killed the shark. He couldn't remember what happened. Just everything went black. They told him about the shark. He couldn't dive anymore. I remember we was all swimming in the river at had big cliffs. We was jumping of of them. He went up and was going to dive. When he came up. His ears was bleeding. Scared the crap out of us kids.
I'm sooo sorry for your loss hes in heaven believe me he is he's the real deal ! Nice guy I'd say, my God no wander he never got back into the ocean ag as in I wouldn't either in rivers sharks do live too thay breed there bull shark and tiger sharks do we have them both her in our inland bay area and rivers the survive in fresh water too . Very,very aggressive sharks just last week a teenager girl 16 years old was fatally killed buy a bull shake. Swan river I think it was at !?just Google it it will come up R.I.P.

We’ve just had a fatal attack on a 16 yr old girl. They think it was a bull shark. It was the first fatal attack in the Swan River in over 100 years. Very sad. 🇦🇺

Was just going to say that. When the time comes, and I do not think the time is now it will be a case for him to look at. However I think he needs to leave it a bit so the family can grieve. WA is hurting right now after that and I can understand why. The media has Queensland paranoid because we had a white come in near Brisbane yesterday.

@@DavidSiciliano2100 It's not safe, rips kill at least 20 people every year. But in terms of shark attacks? It's very safe, on average 2 people die per year, compared to the hundreds of thousands who use the water.

Totally agree with your thoughts on the ISAF "provoked" attack decision on Simon. If they apply "provoked" to every attack where fishermen are nearby, they'll need to reclassify a lot of previous attacks. Fishermen are EVERYWHERE in the waters where sharks are found.
Use of Baits/Chumming waters or anything likely to draw the Curiosity of predator fishes should be Forbidden around ‘People Beaches’ .
@@thomasmacginnes100 The sort of fishing they were doing involved lures, not chumming. It faced open ocean but in that case anytime someone swims somewhere other than a beach, would be recorded as "provoked". It's absurd. They could have another category such as "risky" since they don't even class guys who dive for abalone as provoked. Great whites feed in those waters and it's almost an occupational hazard. Yet Simon, merely swimming a route they use regularly for competitions, is "provoked"??!
Shark Baiting’ is so common today even unto feeding these predatory fishes that a boat is Invitation’ for the presence of (Food) !
I'm with you Hal. I think they are wrong to classify Simon's attack as "provoked". Seriously it's wiser if they are just honest so that people can learn that there is an inherent danger when you go in the water, even if it is very low. They are deceiving people by listing that attack as being provoked. Better to let them know the truth.
any attack is just that! an attack! wether you be consumed in part or whole or left to weaken and then be consumed ! You must be prepared to see all around and defend ! A scuba diver is in the better advantage for sight and defense if you are Thinking and have an essential ‘dive buddy’ . Always be aware of ‘surf troughs’ as these are avenues for predation and fleeing fishes!
@@thomasmacginnes100 It doesn'tmatte how prepared you are or if you have 1 diving buddy or 100 of them lookng out for your back,, a shark is so big (even 4 to 6 feet is a HUGE creature when you put it next to a human in the water) it's hard yo fathom it's size until it happens to someone I'm sure and we can't move through water easily like sharks do, or as fast as they do. We don't have the rows of ampullae of Lorenzini either, that lets a shark know where we are (and that we're a living eatable thing, way before we see them.Then too, you or a friend can drop a weapon in the water (which makes it hard to keep ahold of anything) buta shark can't drop their weapons, very sharp, bone slicing weapons. So there is no way to be prepared for even a 4 to,6 foot hundry or angry shark because it can be on you before anyone can warn you, it can munch off a leg in a couple of seconds, while a dive buddy's trying to reach a victim.
I believe, I know a person can take all the precautions possible,in order to lessen their chances of being a shark attack victim, they can be armed, be very alert, not swim in low visibility conditions or near seals or bait fish etc., near big drop offs etc, but still, in the one in a million chance that a shark decides it wants to bite you, a human being is going to be severely outmatched. Even hitting a shark with our hands just causes human hands to slip & slide so that a lot of victims end up shredding their hands trying to hit a shark, and their hands runnnig into sharp blades. The only way to guarantee no shrk bites is by not getting in the ocean, so if we go in, that's part of the deal we're signing up for. That's just the truth.
Like you said, what humans need to do is not go in the ocean except for usig some truly shark secured areas, that keep them out, and it shouldn't be so hard to establish some of those, a few, but scientists need to stop acting like they are puppies with sharper teeth.
Sharks of massive size have ‘interrupted’ their predation when eyes/gills/nose are Struck !! So... dont give in give out! or give up but Do be alert and Prepared if you enter Their Natural realm! BTW ! if with your group and evan 100 as you say! They will consider ‘the group’ before making a blind shot @ You !!

Do you remember the one Hal spoke about where it was a car accident, the vehicle crashed through a barrier and ended up hanging over a cliff ?
I think it was in the 60s in Australia, before the emergency services could get there at least one person had fallen out of the perched car into the sea below where sharks had gathered according to eye witnesses.
There must have been blood and body fluid leaking out of the crashed car to bring the sharks to the spot.
How terrible for the people.
So even driving near cliffs potentially can end up with you in the water being eaten.

It's so, so rare, almost unheard of, but just checked and a woman was bitten by a blue shark last year off the Cornish coast.

I think anytime there’s fishing nearby it goes default “provoked”. Perhaps because of bait? ,not sure..Doesn’t make sense,but then again a lot doesn’t 😂.
Anything to make it seem like humans made the shark eat someone and that we are “not on the menu.” These scientists have a vested interest in keeping sharks looking like angels.
@@toscadonna his death was his own fault. (1) swimming alone in the late/overcast day. (2) swimming near people fishing from the shore. (3) the water was extremely choppy, which chops up sand and reduces visibility for the shark. (4) large presence of seagulls, which is an indicator that predator(s) are present and the seagulls are looking to scavenge. And this one doesn’t really count, but (5) it’s Australia. I’m sorry, Simon Nellist’s death was unfortunate, but he was just as culpable for his death as the shark was. All you have to do is watch that video, at the conditions, and that is literally what a “shark attack waiting to happen” looks like. You can’t ignore all the warning signs and then say it’s only the shark’s fault
@Pat Luxor the day was overcast, which is quite obvious in the video. Not even sure what you mean “no sand”. Choppy water stirs up sand which reduces visibility. 10-15 feet (which this spot probably wasn’t) isn’t deep enough to not have sand stirred up by choppy water.
@@ourcorrectopinions6824 sharks are indeed quite dangerous and I think anyone with any common sense would chuckle at nonsense like “sharks don’t like the taste of people” or “you’ve got a better chance of being struck by lightning than being bitten by a shark”. But that still doesn’t change the fact that Nellist pretty much ignored every flashing warning sign that it was probably not a good day to be swimming.

I love how the picture hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, focus etc. is different for every SH episode, because Hal probably messed around with the camera settings and didn't go back to default. Don't change, Hal. Please.

I have to agree with you, Hal on the ISAF's idiotic conclusion over the classification of the attack on poor, Mr. Simon Nellist.,and left a comment on Shark Bytes' video saying as much.
The sea lion was directing the sharks attention to Rose.
Among other things, Hal's assessments usually are in lock-step with facts about sharks. So many of these TH-cam videos are melodramatic horse manure. And o yeah, a thousand years ago (almost! lol) I received a Ph.D. in biological oceanography. My works was on corals, not sharks, but I did learn a little about them!
back in that day folks were not baiting sharks like they do today as well as cage diving and the like , but fishermen fished and took what they caught away from ‘people beaches’ !

What I have learned from all the recent attacks is by protecting them, they have been able to rally back. Thank goodness. I love watching them on TV, they are so important to keep the seals in check. I am 70 years old and have a deal with sharks. I won't go to their house and they won't come to mine. Lol
But don't hate me, I love the seals too. 😥

Did they say that the fisherman was chumming ? In a lifetime of fishing this would be the first case of a guy chumming off of rocks that I've ever heard of. It's not impossible, just really unlikely. As rough as the water was there , chumming would have been pretty pointless anyway.

Ah yes, whenever I hear that opening theme song, I think of Sharks Happen. I think it has been firmly established as your channel's theme. As to the attacks... It always amazes me that there are men with enough guts to actually swim or paddle their boards TOWARD an attack in an attempt to aid a victim. I don't know if I would be able to do so. I'd like to think I would but then again I don't go more than ankle deep into the water. I have faced down a mugger with a gun to allow my woman to run for her life without hesitation on my part... but sharks? Nah. No way. 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: That guy got chewed up. I am surprised such an attack didn't remove flesh. Could have been a juvenile Great White. Those sub 10 foot Great Whites still feed on fish mostly. There was another attack by a small White and did something similar in an earlier video if I recall correctly. Could have been a small Bull Shark, but even if it was territorial, something should have been removed, no? I've not heard of too many if any attacks by bulls that had no tissue removed.
Also, RIP that woman's paddle board.
If I was paid a fuck ton, I would dive, but I would NEVER go down without at least one guy down there to watch my back with spears as I did my work at the bottom. Ideally would only go down with TWO dive buddies to keep me alive as I work. No way I'd ever go down without a guard. Not even with another guy down there doing what I am doing because they would be occupied and not watching our backs.
As to the attacks in Florida... Wasn't a young girl on a body board killed by a bull shark that kept trying to finish the job the whole way in forcing the lifeguard to have to fight the bastard off the whole way? She died of her massive injuries if I recall. I forget her nae and the date, but it was a pretty brutal attack.
I remember the fatal attack on the girl. I don't think that attack with no flesh removal was either Bull or Tiger, because that's just not going to happen.Could maybe be a juvie Great White test biting but even then I'd say they'd be some damage. I think it's a shark that doesn't normally bite humans being territorial, or maybe had a line in its mouth? I also wondered if it could have been a hammer head looking for sting rays and this guy getting in the way?

Whatever they have to do to get back control of the narrative. The unedited video was very clear about what was happening, so they labeled it as a snuff film and shame the world into taking the video down. It's all ridiculously obvious at this point. They can't be trusted to tell the truth.

Labeling Simon's attack as provoked is really unsettling. Thank you, ISAF, for throwing shade on an already horrific incident. Utter nonsense. Good content by both you and Kristian.
The guy from ISAF literally explained this. They didn’t say Nellist purposely provoked the shark. They said the shark was provoked by the people fishing off the rocks and Nellist happened to be swimming through in the presence of a provoked shark. They didn’t go out of their way to blame him at all, but if you want to get technical about it… he was swimming alone on an overcast day, close to shore where people were fishing, the water was extremely choppy (lower visibility for the shark), and there was a very large presence of sea gulls (which are an indicator that predator(s) are nearby and a scavenger opportunity may be coming). Sorry, but he literally ignored all the signs and unfortunately paid with his life. That’s not the ISAF guy’s fault
Nobody said it is anyones fault. Please tell me what lured the sharks into the other 500 plus attacks covered so far…. Some have mentions of dead whales. fishing, chumming. Even many that blame cage diving. If it is a shark not known to frequent shallows then there is a question as to why it was there. Todays ISAF and GSAF look for any excuses for their bias to pr for sharks. Total garbage

It's crazy to me that people survive tiger and great white attacks all when you see the size of their mouths. They could so so easily do more damage then just taking an arm or leg.
I think its because they know we aren't their normal prey and don't prey on humans. Because if they did, they could do so much more damage more of the time

Really good episode Hal, thanks ...Wow I just listened to "final Affliction" apparently in 1963 a diver was attacked, he lost his leg but survived...some believe that before he went into the water he was petting a dog, and the shark was attracted to that scent ... that's possible?

Yes. Bource was petting a dog before entering the water, but others saw that shark submerge to go after him from 20 yards or so away. I dont think the scent had anything to do with it.
I just love Hal so much..love the way he tells these stories and how many details he adds in. They're so interesting to me. I love the title of "what u been eating shark" 😂 and how you say "when you go into that water remember, you are more afraid of those sharka, than that sharks are of you." That's absolutely true. I find it hilarious when ppl say sharks are more scared of you, than you are of them...🙄. I heard a marine biologist say that once on the discover channel and I remember thinking how stupid that guy is to say that, or that he is straight lying just to make ppl think there's less danger...cuz sorry, Im sure somea 19ft great white is NOT gonna be scared of floating pieces of meat, humans, splashing around at the tops of the water...they're not scared of us, is what id say. The sharks either get annoyed at us and attack as territorial, or are they just hungry and want to eat us humans, but they aren't scared of us. 😳🦈😳🦈😳🦈So I just stay out the water ..I don't feel like getting into a fight with a giant fish with a mouth full of knifes..no thanks.

in the 80s i remember learning to water ski in Catalina Island, the Isthmus, 4th of July Bay. Falling was the worst, floating by ship rock, hoping they come an get you soon.

I think it most likely ate it fairly recent to being caught as i would think it would be crushed by other bones/coral over 3 years time. Not sure tho
Hal, have you looked at the attack of Henry Bource at Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia? He made a film called “Savage Shadows”, which showed him being pulled into a boat following the attack, with blood pumping out from his missing leg. It attacked him 6 times while he dived.

It bit his lower leg off, swam down to the sea floor and swallowed it and came back for a second attack that was fended off by other divers with spears. End of story
@@micheleshively8557 It did. The footage used to be on TH-cam. Some people would find it hard, watching a man bleeding out on the deck of a boat. But he survived.
@@SharksHappen I went back for him 5 times. However, if you go spear fishing in Bass Strait, you’re really asking for it. I’m in South Australia and there are many beaches where I won’t go in the water. I’d rather swim in a pool anyway.
There's also an underwater photograph of him with his leg in the sharks mouth, right? I saw a video about him with footage of the attack and then again on the boat. It was really creepy.

Wondering your opinion on what kind of shark. Read a comment in a vid that a Perth resident said GWs and tigers may pup there too for safety. Maybe near the opening of the river from the ocean.

Are we expected to survey the beaches for fishing activity? What's the safe range? What if they left 15 minutes before you arrived? A bloke's enjoying an afternoon fishing but his actions, unwittingly, have lured a hungry shark towards the river mouth you presently swimming in. Due to an absurd classification, the connotation is it was his own doing. Ridiculous.
