    Routers are Angry and Lazy, love that. I’m gonna use that one. 👍

    And I thought carving with the grinder was going to be scary, that was until you showed me how easy and fun it actually was!

    I kind of like the forearm carve but think it would look awesome if you do the opposite on the lower side of the body as well. Make a similar carve starting at the volume knob side of the body and roll towards the start of the lower horn. This way the forearm carve is flowing to the butt of the body while the lower carve flows toward the front end of the body. It would not need to be as extreme as the forearm carve but enough to show a little walnut. Hopefully this makes since. It would be a kind of a Ying Yang effect. I think it would balance the visual effect of the carve and look awesome. Great build so far and I think it looks much better now after you reduced the size of the horns on the body.

      Personally I love the asymmetrical nature of the carve and the build as a whole. I'm a big fan of offset guitars, though, so I may be biased heavily

    The carving is really nice and I love how that brings out the contrast in the wood types. I have never used an angle grinder so not sure I could do that.

      The angle grinder is scary for sure, but it's a great tool once you get used to it.

    I'm in love with that arm carve! It looks so good, and I love walnut so bonus points for more of it being exposed ;)

    Angle grinder seems much easier than the 6 bass s I've with rasps a sanders though the carving and sanding is very therapeutic and absorbing cool meditation in the feel and reveal of what the grain is doing a very labor intensive and time consuming process. My electric cello was mus easier and faster because of the shape (axe) and simplicity of the carve it was all handheld belt sander

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The angle grinder sure is easier and a lot faster! Rasps and planes and chisels etc are a lot more relaxing though. By far my favourite method

    Another one here who’s enjoying this build - but if a router is angry, what then is an angle grinder?!

    • @paulneeds
      @paulneeds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I meant to ask you something.
      Say you have a book matched top but have (somehow) lost your neck centreline referenced to the neck pocket by a couple of mm, and the neck now longer matches up to the body c/l.
      Do you not worry?
      I’d guess you still have to re-draw your body centreline to ensure the strings run true to the neck, and obvs position the bridge, pickups, etc, according to the new centreline?
      Have I answered my own question? 🤣🤔

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely always redraw the centre line onto the body once you've done the neck pocket for this exact reason. Sometimes you can stray off the line my a mm or 2 over the length of the guitar body, so you won't see it, but the strings may not line up on the neck properly.
      We can try as hard as we want, but lining up the neck never goes 100% right every time.

    Looking really nice. The contrast between the ash top and the walnut body are going to look great once finish is applied I have always liked walnut. I refinished an old second hand dresser once that had been painted with black paint. Once I stripped the paint off I found walnut plywood and solid walnut and was just incredulous that anyone would paint over such beautiful walnut. I was a bit surprised when you routed what looks to be a standard single coil pickup cavity. With that being a bass I was expecting a different style of pickup. Keeping us guessing I think. LOL

  • @rjdeseijn
    @rjdeseijn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting position indeed for the pick up, I think it will give pretty much the same sound as the first ever P bass. With a wooden pick guard?
    I am still curious if the neck carve is final. Or will there be some rounding off, of the edges?

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No pick guard for this one! Direct mount.
      This is the final neck carve, no more rounding save for a little bit to remove sharp corners. I've been wanting to do a Faceted neck for ages

    When you say nice and thin, how thin? I have a body blank that's just a hair over 40mm unsanded. I think I may need to add some more meat to this hippy sandwich.

  • @MichaelBogomolny
    @MichaelBogomolny 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks great! Say, how thick is the body now? I just got carried away with planing and got a 32mm body, wonder if I can get away with that..

      I usually use a saburrtooth grinding disk for carving. Generally I'm usually the coarsest one, too.
