Hah, 2014 was a great year for gaming. Kirby Triple Deluxe, Shovel Knight, Smash, Bayonetta 2, Pokemon OR/AS....Okay maybe it was a great year if you owned a WiiU and 3DS and refused to poke your head out at the rest of the world. That counts for something.....right?

Smash U took a step back from where Brawl left off by not at least TRYING to make a story mode that was as cool as The Subspace Emissary, which has pretty much become the unofficial Nintendo feature film at this point. Subspace Emissary's also the reason that I don't want any Nintendo movies for a while, because how are you supposed to top something as big and epic as an inter-dimensional god-being trying to swallow up the world?
You forgot Mario Kart 8, DK Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad, and Shantae, but yep, not a bad year. I have high end gaming PC, so it's not like I don't have access to the multiplats, but my Wii U still saw more use.

I seem to think that In terms of gaming, machines go from PC>WiiU>PS4>Xbox 1 PC because the Master Race argument (even if it was originally a joke on ZP and became so serious). But 60fps High res games are nice WiiU because of the amazing exclusives that won't ever see remakes or ports to PC because Nintendo mainly keeps their games Off PC. PS4 because it has more potential then the Xbox 1. Plus Infamous Second Son, pre-packed with glow in the dark condoms And Xbox 1 because most of their good games end up being ported to PC anyways.
VentusNeos gotta disagree, I have a great gaming pc, a wii u, a one, fuck the ps4 for it's absolutely awful controller, which makes me sad because there are a couple games, mostly hd remakes I want to play very much. The one controller is so good I use it on my pc as well and I would have to say I use my one more than my pc since I got it. the wii u is decent, as long as I use a pro controller, but overall it's just ok as a system, not amazing.
Guitarzan1919 To each their own. As I said, a lot of One's great games have a pretty high chance of getting a Port to PC. and since you can use you're One's controller on PC, it's a win for you as well. I personally like the PS4 controller, The cheap thumb grips are annoying though. WiiU though. It had a year of greatness, and based on the Direct, they're going to try for a second year of greatness. Bayonetta 2, Smash, Mario, Backwards compatibility. It's all very solid. It might not have the best hardware, but how the games and the system itself uses that limited hardware impresses me. Like I said though, to each their own. If you like the One best, by all means, you can.
VentusNeos I love my pc and game on it plenty, but for several games that came out last year, I opted for the one release and I'm glad I did. I have friends that had the pc versions, and one major problem with pc is they never quite run correctly and there are usually more bugs. as for the wii u, last year was ok. I was expecting a bit more, and actually found myself playing a couple older games, like windwaker hd, on it more. mario kart and smash bros are fun though. super bummed that the new zelda got pushed back.
Yeah, I wasn't too pleased by Smash Bros U's lack of a story mode. It felt like a step back from where Brawl left off. Come to think of it, a lot of Nintendo games of late have felt like a step back: Super Mario 3D World, Smash Bros U, "New" Yoshi's Island 3D. Funny enough, the only thing that felt like a step forward to me was Pokemon Omega Ruby, a game that actually IS a step back but still feels fresh and new with the new look and additional game mechanics like that upgraded PokeRadar thing that was introduced in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and then sort of forgotten about for a bit.
The only fighting game that I've played to have a somewhat decent story mode was Mk 9. If fighting games don't have a focus and passion on making one like that and would rather focus more on the gameplay, it should be fine. Better to have that than one that was thrown together at the last minute.
Maztuhmind Well, the gameplay for Smash hasn't exactly changed much in the last 10 years, or at all. I just wish they'd given us SOMETHING akin to a story mode. Maybe I've just been spoiled by The Subspace Emissary.
1krani the gameplay is essentially the same, but it's the little tweaks that really makes it its own game compared to the previous ones. The fighting genre is much more multiplayer focused than most other genres. Especially since a new ssb only comes out once per console, it was better for them to focus on that aspect than on the single player one. Although I will say that the classic mode in ssb is still more interesting than most other fighters.
Maztuhmind that said, the subspace emissary single player game was great. Wasn't the works of Shakespeare in terms of narrative, but I felt it was a solid single player experience. I liked MK9 basically going through the plot of the Mortal Kombat games, but it wasn't what I would call great storytelling. It was a device to facilitate the character matchups.
BrainAbsoluteZero the storytelling for mortal kombat won't win any awards, but it was the gameplay that made it interesting to play through. A focused single player ssb mode does have potential though. the execution for subspace emissary however felt rushed.
Maybe this year wasn't the best year for gaming, but that shouldn't stop people from enjoying games all together. If you can't find new games that you like, play old games on your backlog or games from other generations, there is a lot of great and hidden gems to keep one busy for a long time!
At this point I'm convinced he has a bias against Nintendo since they had a ton of great games come out this year such as Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. WiiU, Bayonetta 2, and Pokémon.
All games with business philosophies or from genres he just isn't a big fan of. He might even like them, but not consider them the greatest thing ever.
In his Pikmin 3 review, he said that he was reluctant to play it, specifically because it was a Wii U game. The fact that he was less likely to play a game because of the console it was on made him lose a significant chunk of my respect as a gaming journalist. I only watch his videos for the funny comments; He has little critical merit. Galactic Raft If you've been playing the games that Nintendo's been putting out lately, then you wouldn't be saying that. Although their games reuse old characters (I actually like this decision, but many don't), they make up for it by introducing unique gameplay elements in each installment. Plus, each game released is extremely polished and has amazingly designed levels.
Pretty much every comment is saying something along the lines of "this year sucked for games". Damn right it did. If you didn't own a fucking WiiU. I'm getting really damn sick of people bitching about there being no good games. For Christ's sake they're right in front of you. Buy a WiiU. Reward Nintendo for actually giving a shit. I'm getting legitimately pissed of by comments still complaining about a problem that has a fucking solution already.
mong morg I agree, but I was talking about consoles. Also, most Xbone and PS4 games this year (most of which were average to bleh) came out on PC, but not a single WiiU title did.
Ok, and what if someone is sick of colorful, mascot driven platforming games and crossover fighting titles and kart racers? Not that I am, but what would you suggest then?
Racecarlock How about Bayonetta 2, or Xenoblade Chronicles X, something coming out I believe next year on WiiU. I sure as hell wouldn't send them to the other current gen consoles. I have very little faith in Sony and Microsoft at this time to deliver legitimately good games.
Makai DeLorme Oh wow, two games. I am so sarcastically convinced now. But then, if it's so good, what are you doing here bitching about people's opinions on 2014 when you could be playing the console you love so much and not giving a flying toss about some internet misanthropes?
Just thought I'd share some good old TMI. I asked my doctor about the "one last drop" phenomenon many men are acquainted with, and he said that that doesn't have to be normal. When you shake it forever and it still has a drop of piss, that means you're in the habit of holding it in when you have to go. It goes away over time so long as you go to the washroom as soon as your body tells you to.
Is it wrong to say that I enjoyed Thief? And before anyone asks, no, I wasn't able to play the originals and yes, I'm sure your nostalgia says the old ones are 10x better and no, I don't care. I liked this Thief because it was a challenge for me and I liked the story. It also scared the piss out of me which is why I won't play through it again but I liked it. I feel like I didn't waste any money and if money was wasted, it was wasted on a deluxe edition of Assassins Creed Unity preorder.
As someone was turned into a PC Gamer soley by the original two Thief games alone....yes, definitely. The reboot made me want to punch a baby koala. While I don't think the reboot was so horrible as a game it should've been number one, I can't disagree with the sentiment Yahtzee's trying to express. The reboot is a disgrace compared to the original two, and it's even worse than the third installment (Deadly Shadows), which had already made the jump from brilliant to mediocre.
Yes, it is wrong. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from playing the originals since you can buy shit like whatever that amalgamation of several failed abortions Thief turned out to be. Why not try them and judge for yourself instead of a passive-aggressive response to a question you just answered for yourself. Clearly people adore the originals for a reason.
I feel this year in gaming was... weird. I agree with some people that if you own a WiiU, a PC or a Vita (nobody talks about poor ol Vita), this year was magnificent. Games like Shadows of Mordor, Wolfenstein, Smash Bros, Shovel Knight , Souls Sacrifice and Binding of Issac were fantastic aditions to any library. This year showed how good a Kickstarter can be with Shovel Knight and Wasteland 2. This year showed you can revive franchises long tought dead and make then great pieces of work, like Bayonetta and Wolfenstein. This year showed how you can risk a new IP and make it great, like Shadows of Mordor, as well showing that you can do great work with existing IP, like Alien or all the continuations of games that launched on Nintendo's Wii U. But, on the other hand, we saw really bad examples. We saw that you don't even need to know how to program to have a popular game, you just need a drama on it and it will sell millions, like Depression Quest (and shut up if you say "you are mysoginist" or "you are SJW", this game only got the sales they had thanks to the drama made by Zoe Quinn, being true that Wizardchan harrassed her or it was all fake). We saw the arrise of the most average triple A games ever created, from making then exacts copypastes of the last game (Far Cry 4), making then buggy as shit (Sanic Boom), lying about the capacity of the game and giving an underwelming experience (Watch_Dogs) or all of the above (AssAssin's Creed Unity). We sawv that you can make three games of the same franchise in six months or making a paid demo and be OK by it (FNAF and Ground Zeroes, both being good games with really greedy market strategy). And, lasrt but not least, this year showed that you can make fake claims of copyright infligments just to hide any negative critique about your game (Slaughtering Grounds). Overall, it was a messy year. Claiming that it was the worst year of gaming is a absurd exageration. But it showed the extrems of the two sides of the coin: Making a game purely for profit or making a game to people enjoy. And I will get swarmed by comments saying that I am this or that, just predicting...
I think Destiny should've made it to the shit list due to it being the biggest disappointment to be released in 2014, but I can't remember if it was reviewed by Yahtzee or not.
I didn't exactly think it was that spectacular a year for AAA titles either, but 2015 is shaping up to be a fantastic year. MGSV: The Phantom Pain, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Witcher 3, and Zelda are the big four I'm most interested in, but games like Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, the new Battlefront, Persona 5 and....yes....even Final Fantasy XV have peeked my interest a ton. I don't want to act too cynical, but I get that 2014 was a year that let down a lot of people, and I can see why some may think that 2015 may not be too different, but I have some degree of faith. *prepares for incoming shit storm*
Other games I forgot to mention but am still interested in: Star Fox, No Man's Sky, Arkham Knight (not a big fan of that series though) Scalebound, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Splatoon, I wont say Kingdom Hearts III because we don't know if it'll come out in 2015, but hey, hyped for that too.
Who is saying 2015 is going to be shit? If there are people saying such idiotic things they should be laughed at. MGSV and Persona 5 alone will make it infinitely better than 2014...nevermind the plethora of other massive games coming out that you've already listed. I'll throw in Project Cars aswell for personal gratification :D
fuck souls 2 more like. its garbage dlc bosses have to be the worst ever made,i rate the dev team for bed of chaos more than dodge through there sword bosses like the fume knight L
My experience with Thief was pretty much hating it for every second that I played it. Then when I hadn't played it for a bit, I think "Huh, I should replay that; it can't be as bad as I remember", then the process repeats. (Same goes for Watch Dogs).
When the top worst game came up, I genuinely thought it would be Destiny. If I listened correctly, Destiny was also a AAA title with a massive budget that ended up a disappointment.
iamabucket13 Well no, since he only puts things in a "Best/Worst of 20XX" if he reviewed in that year, so if Destiny was going to turn up on either side of the ledger it would be in this list.
Penningtontj I think he's implying that only a fraction of the entire game was released in 2014, and that more of it will be released in 2015. Yes, the official base game was released in 2014 but the game's description and the actual game are two different things.
I'm sorry yahtzee.... but do you think people want to play smash games because the characters are nintentdo? I can't speak for everyone else, but i could give 2 shits the character i'm playing. I don't know who the fuck "ike" is, but he was my favorite character in that game. No, what brings me to smash games are the very VERY polished gameplay. Just the gameplay and nothing else. Its a different take on fighting games. Were it any other characters or on any other console would make no difference
AerospaceDG2 iownalx23 Smash is not a forgettable fighting game. It is VERY unique, and the only one to my knowledge that doesn't rely on a health bar. The physics made for great fighting and the controls were tight. Thats why melee was so popular. Sure, in later iterations, the INTENTIONALLY made the game less competitive (it was never their intention with melee) but melee is still probably in the top greatest competitive fighting games of all time.
Maztuhmind so I guess if you will play the whole serie a game after another you will think so too since the memory of previous games will still be fresh
It doesn't take a genius to realize that Nintendo had the most solid line up of great games in 2014. And yet the only wii u title he mentions is Sonic Boom? Yahtzee can like and dislike whatever he wants. But it's more than a bit obvious he is biased against Nintendo. Smash brothers, Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule warriors are all very good contenders for the top 5 games of 2014 on my list.
Yea he also never mentions World of Warcraft or COD unless its about something negative, it's almost like he doesn't like playing the same game year after year.
He doesn't haves bias against Nintendo it's just that he doesn't think they're the end all be all of gaming (I agree with him on that one). If he had a bias against Nintendo he would take every chance he could to review them so he could beat them to death again
And finally, I'm not interested in Smash Bros because of the obvious bias against Nintendo that I have, or rather, that the fanboys have been informing me I have on a regular basis for the last seven years, and which I will continue to deny despite the apparent futility. Look, this isn't difficult to rebut: if I had a grudge against Nintendo, I would absolutely take the opportunity to review Smash Bros in order to abuse it for my own sick gratification. www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/12824-Extra-Punctuation-s-2014-Honorable-Mentions-for-Games
smidget whittington the story isnt important to a video game all that matters is the game play because if someone wants a story they should watch a movie or read a book or something
Daniel Escobedo That's not necessairly true: A story isn't essential to a videogame, and some games benefit from having none. But if a game does have a story, having it be good is definitely kind of important... That said i haven't played Shadow of Mordor, so i don't know if it's good or not.
Daniel Escobedo i disagre, i think a story is very important to a game (sometimes not necessary but important nonetheless) and video games are a massive part of the storytelling medium so saying we should watch a movie or read a book if we want story is stupid... i have completed shadow of mordor 100% and its a good game but i dont think i would say it was the best 2014 had to offer
He doesn't hate Thief, I just think he hates the reboot of it because they made it into a modern stealth game instead of keeping it the same as the old one.
GaminGxMagickZ I played through all of the original thiefs, loved every bit of it. The new Thief isn't a thief game, its Dishonored with a different gfx filter.
Great list, sad to see Elite Dangerous and Dragon Age Inquisition in there. But I know you're playing ED! The friendship drive charging tweet said it all. Waiting for a review.
Was I the only one to play Assassin's Creed Rogue? I thought it was surprisingly good. Due to how short it is, the sailing never got tedious, the locations are all pretty diverse and unique, it wasn't broken at launch, and despite a slow beginning, it paced itself pretty well for the remaining 2/3rds of the game. It's s a shame he never reviewed it because it definitely belongs in the top five this year of non-nintendo games.
Thanks a lot Thief, not only did you fuck up the chance of potential interest in the series for this generation, you also continued the downward spiral of AAA stealth games.
Ill go with shadoq of mordor being the best 2014 game ive played (even though I only got it very recently). Its the one game I dont turn off because "im fed up of it for tonight" which is what I do with all the other games on my pc at the minute
Shadow of Mordor is the first game I played that really felt like a next generation game. It felt like a step up. It's not the best game I've ever played but I am yet to hear anyone not be satisfied with it. I've loaned it out a few times and it never fails to disappoint. I guess the reason it has a bad rep is that people must have just not taken it seriously.
I recently got a new CD that I really enjoyed, but I forgot my old stereo/CD player in the bed of my truck for a few months resulting in it's current nasty and rusted state. I plugged it in, it miraculously turned on, and I REALLY wanted to listen to this CD, but didn't want to insert it into the craggily, miry maw that became the respective slot without assurance that it would accept the offering. So I used my copy of Thief as an experiment. It didn't work.
I quite enjoyed Thief, but then I said "I want some more!" and downloaded Thief The Metal Age. I still think Thief is good, but the originals are amazing, again, I wasn't really around since babies can't play video games, but I really liked Thief II, because of the open and really large maps with a lot to explore and garret is actually a really interesting and awsome charachter, altough I'll admit that Thief 2 can sometimes lose you, I had a great time
Just went out and bought Thief a few days back.. Had I have actually read the review prior to purchasing (as I generally do) along with watching this video I may well have reconsidered. Ohwell, I'll give it a blast either way and see what all the fuss is about.. Guess I'll check out the originals while I'm at it so I can compare.
4:32 Hmmm... I remember an episode where he was covering comments of his SSBB review were he made fun of someone who used 'objectively' in the same context.
Yahtzee! Love the video, and I personally put Shovel Knight at #2 and Pokemon ORAS as #1. But anyways I think a game that you might like would be Rimworld, it's depressing when your people begin having mental breakdowns. Cheers!
There were no absolute standouts this year, which is good, because I usually end up playing games that are several years old anyway. The closest thing I've ever played to a current game is Bravely Default, about a year after it's European release.
Why is everyone saying that this year has been shit? It hasn't been the greatest year but it's been quite good. I mean for one, it's been a very good year for Wii U and 3DS owners. (Thank goodness I decided to get a Wii U because it was totally worth it). We got GTA V on the next gen consoles. We got Watch_Dogs, The Last of Us: Remastered (one of the main reasons I bought a PS4!), Alien: Isolation, Sunset Overdrive, The Wolf Among Us, Wolfenstein, Destiny, The Evil Within, South Park: Stick of Truth (I hated that game at first but I really like it), Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Child of Light, Broken Age, Little Big Planet 3, Borderlands the Pre-Sequal, Monument Valley, Goat Sim (I know a lot of people think it's shut but it's very fun with friends), Never Alone... So many different games on a variety of platforms. These are only those that I can remember at this moment in time but there are loads more that we got this year (have you seen all of the indie games out there?) that were just brilliant. Yeah this year wasn't so great but it isn't the worst year we've ever had for games. Anyway, it is a new year now so let's get ready for the games of 2015.
Marko Stamenkovic Well i say solid just because it was not very long, and the rpg elements (for example lame items) were not so good. The soul-like loot system was very appealing though. I like it, definitely the best 2d platformer for a long time, i just wont jump the shark calling it amazing ^^
I can't even imagine how hard it must be for non-native English speakers to follow what Yahtzee's saying; I'm somewhat surprised that I was able to follow all of that.
you get used in time
***** Agree
You're probably just stupid.
I'm not native and I can follow it. Maybe you need more practice
From Mexico here, at first I had problems understanding him, but you get used to his way of talking.
A movie licensed game ends up being the best game of the year? How is this even possible?!
to be fair, Shadow of Mordor takes place between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, so it's not a movie game.
that being said, it is a Licensed game.
And the Devs did a fantastic job with it.
ShadowWolfRising wait I thought it was before the hobbit.
To be fair 90% of movie games suck ass, so there has to be a good one every once in a while.
That's how shitty the year's been... Still, Shadow of Mordor was fantastic, as was Isolation.
*****
no, After Hobbit, Before Fellowship.
There's a letter in game you can find referring to the Battle of the 5 Armies.
Couldn't agree more with Shadow of Mordor. Went in expecting nothing and was pleasantly surprised with one of the best combat systems of any game ever, a fantastic captain/warchief mechanic that kept the player interested even without story mode and upgrades that are all actually valuble, which is rather off for a game in my experience
What a shitty year for gaming...
and that's why we got many bad movie games like south park, alien, lord of the rings etc etc
mywlan2 Thoses games were good
I mean destiny was alright... it wasn't amazing sure but it was kind of ok.
Good thing I got so many games on my backlog already, 2014 gave me a good chance to catch up.
Clinton M i was being sarcastic because he said it was a bad year even tho it was a year when we got lot more good movie games than we got on last few years

4:22 Who’s here in 2024 after Yahtzee revoked the award and gave it to Wolfenstein instead?
Me, because as someone who hated Shadow of Mordor I'm feeling pretty vindicated right now.

Clinton M
I did.
1krani subspace emissary was the weakest part about brawl.
YES! Wolfenstein was at the top of the list! TNO is one of my all-time favorite shooters. I'm really happy to see it get the recognition it deserves.
The logic behind reboots, as Yahtzee asked, is because the developers know full-well that the game wouldn't sell if it didn't have a reckognizeable brand attached to it.

VentusNeos I agree, it's still a bummer though
Would have loved a 20-30 minute special with Jim and Yahtzee talking about the best and worst.
2014 was a fantastic year for Wii U and 3ds owners!
That sound for the Top 5 was just great. i need a soundbyte of that for sure.
"...and then I pictured chasing them across the croquet lawn with an elephant gun." That bit really got me. Thank you so much. I needed that laugh.
Lewd, rude and crude. I've missed you Yahtzee. That polite and eloquently spoken doppelgänger just wasn't the same.
I hate Thief so much. Such a buggy mess.
Maztuhmind
Well, the gameplay for Smash hasn't exactly changed much in the last 10 years, or at all.
THANK YOU!! for Putting Wolfenstein the New Order in the list, it's great to see somebody remember it
That fart noise gets me every time.
What do you mean ? WE GOT HALF LIFE 3 THIS YEAR !!! IT WAS AMAZING ! Oh..sorry..wrong time period. Wrong dimension. Wrong Universe.
damn you
jose carlos Munoz Man, all those space cadets... They'll never learn to keep their mouths shut =\
Vespene Gas I know next they're going to say something about lizard Obama!
Aiden Brady Oh wait
one of two videos where wolfenstein the new order is in the top best games of 2014, that's how fucking underrated the game is and sad!!!!
Would that other vid be TBs by any chance?
Ikr, I really enjoyed it. Really deserved much more praise than it actually got
You like Wolfenstien do you? ;-)
th-cam.com/video/B1XtZhRLjls/w-d-xo.html
Maybe this year wasn't the best year for gaming, but that shouldn't stop people from enjoying games all together. If you can't find new games that you like, play old games on your backlog or games from other generations, there is a lot of great and hidden gems to keep one busy for a long time!
Someone give this man or woman a fucking medal or a goddamn parade. Fuck it, give him both, and a day named after him!
um great editing and scripting it's hard to see something new hit the mainstream but this top 5 did it
That grumpy Yahtzee face at the end absolutely kills me!
ALRIGHT second video I saw and you sir just won a new subscriber
this video made me almost piss myselft because of laughing
At this point I'm convinced he has a bias against Nintendo since they had a ton of great games come out this year such as Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. WiiU, Bayonetta 2, and Pokémon.
he only reviewed Bayonetta 2 out of ll of those though...
Yahtzee made it clear in his ALbW Review, where he stands with Nintendo.
You happen to like Nintendo alot so let me tell you right now that you wont like what yahtzee has to say about them most of the time.
I'm getting legitimately pissed of by comments still complaining about a problem that has a fucking solution already.
>implying there wasn't already a solution
*cough*PC*cough*
mong morg I agree, but I was talking about consoles.
Between his top 5, and some of my favorites such as Far Cry 4 and Inquisition, I think this was a great year for games.
2014 was a terrible year for gaming, but at least it gave us Alien Isolation.
***** I suppose I shall but more likely than not I won't like them just because I liked the new one so much.
DeathDealer1997 I felt like this Thief's stealth was a lot like Skyrim's stealth, which I enjoy a lot. So, it was very fun for me.
It's not wrong for you to like it because you have absolutely no idea what made old Thief games good and reboot shit.
That opening metaphor was profound. Well said.
That raspberry sound for the worst games killed me XD
I think Destiny should've made it to the shit list due to it being the biggest disappointment to be released in 2014, but I can't remember if it was reviewed by Yahtzee or not.
Disappointment yes. One of the worst games this year I don't think so. I don't think he reviewed it btw.
Ross Wightman He did.
it wasn't bad just dissapointing
My apologies then.
william tucker well i enjoyed it for a while but i don't play the shit out of it
I didn't exactly think it was that spectacular a year for AAA titles either, but 2015 is shaping up to be a fantastic year.
Other games I forgot to mention but am still interested in:
Star Fox, No Man's Sky, Arkham Knight (not a big fan of that series though) Scalebound, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Splatoon,
I wont say Kingdom Hearts III because we don't know if it'll come out in 2015, but hey, hyped for that too.
MrManBuzz Eh persona is quite the overrated rpg for being so standard and japanese.
Con Cahill While I will agree it is overrated it's still a very good series.
Funny how Uncharted 4 ended up coming out in 2016 and Persona 5 and Breath Of The Wild in 2017
we were saved by dark souls 2. every other game this year was absolutely horrible.
Wow.
I bet you have a beret.
Nonuv Urbeeznus
*fedora
***** *Ass for a face
fuck souls 2 more like. its garbage dlc bosses have to be the worst ever made,i rate the dev team for bed of chaos more than dodge through there sword bosses like the fume knight L
URreadingmyaccname What about Persona Q and Guilty Gear Xrd?.....And maybe even MGSV!?
My experience with Thief was pretty much hating it for every second that I played it. Then when I hadn't played it for a bit, I think "Huh, I should replay that; it can't be as bad as I remember", then the process repeats. (Same goes for Watch Dogs).
I absolutely adore you Yahtzee. Kudos for the consistent quality content.
When the top worst game came up, I genuinely thought it would be Destiny. If I listened correctly, Destiny was also a AAA title with a massive budget that ended up a disappointment.
I don't think destiny would even be on this list. Only the first third of the game was released in 2014, so it's more of a 2015 game
iamabucket13 Well no, since he only puts things in a "Best/Worst of 20XX" if he reviewed in that year, so if Destiny was going to turn up on either side of the ledger it would be in this list.
Penningtontj I think he's implying that only a fraction of the entire game was released in 2014, and that more of it will be released in 2015. Yes, the official base game was released in 2014 but the game's description and the actual game are two different things.
Echo Sierra Maybe. Still a flawed implication.
Is that gabe moaning?
I'm sorry yahtzee.... but do you think people want to play smash games because the characters are nintentdo? I can't speak for everyone else, but i could give 2 shits the character i'm playing. I don't know who the fuck "ike" is, but he was my favorite character in that game. No, what brings me to smash games are the very VERY polished gameplay. Just the gameplay and nothing else. Its a different take on fighting games. Were it any other characters or on any other console would make no difference
Well that's mostly the appeal to Smash. If it wasn't for the characters it would be as forgettable as most fighting games.
AerospaceDG2 yea just look at PS All Stars.
AerospaceDG2 iownalx23 Smash is not a forgettable fighting game. It is VERY unique, and the only one to my knowledge that doesn't rely on a health bar. The physics made for great fighting and the controls were tight. Thats why melee was so popular. Sure, in later iterations, the INTENTIONALLY made the game less competitive (it was never their intention with melee) but melee is still probably in the top greatest competitive fighting games of all time.
iownalx23 I've seen PS All Stars and it's not quite like smash bros -- how it handles death and victory really undermines the gameplay.
but I play them for the characters: Ice Climber 4 Life
That had to be painful for Yahtzee, having to put Theif as the worst game, considering how much he loves thief 2 from the original games.
His face at the end..LOL!
no assassin's creed unity in top 5 worst? why?
The bugs and glitches were what people bashed it on mainly, not the game itself.
Maztuhmind actually I was pissed both on the quality and the gameplay/story.
Captain Maclagman I can see that since it is a yearly series. I haven't played it yet. Still on revelations lol.
Maztuhmind so I guess if you will play the whole serie a game after another you will think so too since the memory of previous games will still be fresh
Captain Maclagman my mistake was that I started revelations right after brotherhood.
Did you just not hear the beginning?
did you just
did you just not hear
why he explained this
Yea he also never mentions World of Warcraft or COD unless its about something negative, it's almost like he doesn't like playing the same game year after year.
LOL.
Oh wait, were you serious? In that case LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.
Shadow of Mordor? Seriously?
its a good game
its not that good.... the gameplay is good and the nemesis system is good but story is boring as hell
smidget whittington the story isnt important to a video game all that matters is the game play because if someone wants a story they should watch a movie or read a book or something
Daniel Escobedo
That's not necessairly true: A story isn't essential to a videogame, and some games benefit from having none.
Every top/bottom annual review needs to be done in this way. With those sound effects.
Did not expect Thief at the end! I didn't know you hated it that much!
He doesn't hate Thief, I just think he hates the reboot of it because they made it into a modern stealth game instead of keeping it the same as the old one.
GaminGxMagickZ
I played through all of the original thiefs, loved every bit of it. The new Thief isn't a thief game, its Dishonored with a different gfx filter.
Datoneguywhoiscool didnt dishonered have better and more open maps the the new thief
why did he removed the doodles at the end? i love them
that face at the end just cracks me up
Monster Hunter 4G came out in Japan in the fourth quarter of 2014. What a great year for gaming.
This vid had my favourite Top and Bottom 5 sounds. Those moaning and raspberry sounds crack me up every time.
Yahtzee must get an award for being the most hardcore game reviewer
Great list, sad to see Elite Dangerous and Dragon Age Inquisition in there.
But I know you're playing ED! The friendship drive charging tweet said it all.
Waiting for a review.
This video couldn't be any more accurate lol
When he was talking about the vast majority of resources I seriously thought it was gonna be Advanced Warfare, needless to say, I was surprised.
Thank you so much for making making those the no. 1 top and bottom. I've really felt the same way and own both of them.
Your profile picture. It's so good.
IronicTB Thanks.
That "Mad Yahtzee Face" at the end needs to be used far more often
So when are Escapist going to change their name to The Zero Punctuation Channel?**trollface**
I'm glad at least one person didn't forget about Wolfenstein
I remember how excited I was for gaming in 2014... what a let down of a year.
your analogys are the best
No matter how much you shake it.. the last drop always goes down your leg. True that.
I quite enjoyed Thief, but then I said "I want some more!" and downloaded Thief The Metal Age. I still think Thief is good, but the originals are amazing, again, I wasn't really around since babies can't play video games, but I really liked Thief II, because of the open and really large maps with a lot to explore and garret is actually a really interesting and awsome charachter, altough I'll admit that Thief 2 can sometimes lose you, I had a great time
absolutely pissed myself laughing at every fart sound
One of my favorite youtube channels :)
"2014 was only bad if you didn't get a Wii U". Well unfortunately I'm not a part of those 5 people so tough luck for me I guess.
I remember an episode where he was covering comments of his SSBB review were he made fun of someone who used 'objectively' in the same context.
that moan made me chuckle a little bit everytime it sounded off XD
Well crap, I had successfully forgotten about Thief until just now...
I'm genuinely surprised Unity didn't beat out Thief. Thinking about it Thief probably deserved the spot but I'd plain forgotten about it.
Yahtzee! Love the video, and I personally put Shovel Knight at #2 and Pokemon ORAS as #1. But anyways I think a game that you might like would be Rimworld, it's depressing when your people begin having mental breakdowns. Cheers!
Glad to see Wolfenstein in another top 5 list.
I played both alien isolation and the evil within. Alien isolations was definitely the one that has me on edge more.
Mass Effect 4, The Elder Scrolls 6 and Half Life 3.
2017 will be a good gaming year!
liar.
TheGM86 Wow, you thought he was serious?
your doing a good job by reviewing games yatzee, keep it up!
Shadow of Mordor was phenomenal
There were no absolute standouts this year, which is good, because I usually end up playing games that are several years old anyway. The closest thing I've ever played to a current game is Bravely Default, about a year after it's European release.
Forgot to put annotations on those other videos at the end... I wanted to click the Sonic one! Time to search through the channel...
just found out the yatzee invented the master race dude in his 1st witcher review, i love you yatzee the master race dude is hilarious
I just recently bought Theif. I'm having fun with it, too. But now Yahtzee's opinion is going to loom over me like a disapproving father.
10 Seconds into this intro video I am like rocking around like ape with a beer :)
For the first time ever i completely agree with his list, he did a great job
Seeing Wolfenstein in the Top 5 legitamately shocked me.
Shovel Knight one of the best games of 2014.
What.
Did you play it?
It is a great Indie Game, why should that surprise you?
A solid 2D platformer created by an indie studio that is more than a fuckhole for nostalgia fans was all it took this year ^^
Terker2 Solid? It was fucking awesome. Best designed platfoming sections in years.
Marko Stamenkovic Well i say solid just because it was not very long, and the rpg elements (for example lame items) were not so good. The soul-like loot system was very appealing though.
I like it, definitely the best 2d platformer for a long time, i just wont jump the shark calling it amazing ^^
Wasn't expecting Thief at the bottom 5 .
