There are only two possibilities: Either being a minister is extraordinarily easy, in which case, why are we paying them at all? Or, they are neglecting their primary responsibilities entirely, let alone performing them adequately. If their salaries aren’t sufficient, the solution isn’t to complain but to fix the system by actually doing their jobs properly. While ministers enjoyed pay rises in line with inflation, the rest of us have been left to endure wage stagnation. Meanwhile, the very thing they are supposed to be working towards-improving living standards-has been decimated by their inability to fulfil their basic duties. It’s not their job to speak to the press; it’s their job to serve the public.

This economist is talking utter drivel. The ONLY exception to banning second jobs altogether should be the continuing professional development requirements for MPs to maintain professional registrations and aptitude in their pre-parliament profession. Any expenses associated with this should be covered by the state but the MP should receive no additional payments for this work.
If a person wants to be an MP s/he needs to understand that this is a commitment to service of the country and his/her constituents.
If being a propagandist on a propaganda channel is what you want to do then do not stand for parliament.

Ban all second jobs for MPs. If they don't like it they can go elsewhere. Done right, it's a full on job. Do the after dinner speeches for free. Retain job validation (eg GPs) with voluntary work, make that possible at need, but no financial gain from ANY second income. Mmm, I do not know which side of Politics you sit on most likely the left from what you say. It is very difficult for those on the left of Politics to understand that some people work 80 or 90 hours a week and are happy to do so. Indeed I have run a business and worked for a large Multi National Company both being able to expand my business and out perform my left wing counter parts at work with a great deal of ease. From what I know of Farage he works 7 days a week and up to 12 hours a day. This sort of work pattern is not unusual for high earners and those who run businesses. It is an alien concept to those that lean to the left politically but quite frankly Farage would probably not find enough to do just having one job. Often those that make a lot of money or who are successful work considerably longer hours, more efficiently and with far more productivity than those who make less money by working 40 hours a week - put simply there is a reason why most people are successful and other not.

Andrew Lillicoe’s point that MPs should be able to do whatever they want outside of parliament because people voted for them doesn’t stand up. Constituents expect MPs to represent them in parliament, not go on game shows or present radio and TV programs. MPs are not there to push their own agendas, they are there to represent the views of all of their constituents, even the ones that didn’t vote for them. Farage neglected his duties when he was in the European Parliament and he’s pulling the same trick now. Is this what he meant when he said we would get back sovereignty?

If lawmakers were to implement a ban on politicians holding second jobs, we would likely witness a significant exodus of politicians from the political arena. Imposing penalties on figures like Nigel Farage for having additional employment would have a ripple effect, influencing other politicians who are engaged in similar activities. There was a period in history when individuals entered public office after having already amassed their wealth, driven primarily by a desire to give back to society through political service. I long for those days, but unfortunately, the current landscape is populated by individuals who enter politics primarily for financial gain.
