    ----------------------------------------
    In a recent journey into the world of British television, I decided to dive into "Doctor Who," a series that has been captivating audiences for decades. I kicked things off with the first episode of the first series titled "Rose," and boy, was it an exciting introduction to the Doctor's universe. The episode follows Rose, a young woman working in a department store, who gets entangled with a mysterious stranger known as the Doctor.
    First and foremost, I was struck by the quality of acting throughout the episode. Christopher Eccleston's portrayal of the Ninth Doctor was outstanding. His monologues were delivered with power and nuance, leaving a lasting impact. The supporting cast also impressed me with their performances, especially Billie Piper as Rose. Despite limited context for her character, she managed to convey a sense of depth and relatability, giving us a character we can root for.
    Another element that caught my attention was the high-energy nature of the episode. From the Doctor's chaotic, quick-witted dialogue to the fast-paced plot, it kept me engaged from start to finish. The introduction of the TARDIS and the sonic screwdriver added to the excitement, making me eager to explore more of the Doctor's world.
    However, one aspect that stood out was the chemistry between the characters. While Rose and the Doctor make an intriguing pair, I found their dynamic to be more of a mentor-student relationship than a romantic one. This choice added depth to their interactions, showing that the showrunners were more interested in character development than a simple love story.
    In conclusion, "Rose" served as a promising beginning to my Doctor Who journey. The exceptional acting, fast-paced storytelling, and character-driven approach all worked in its favor. I'm excited to explore more episodes and witness the evolution of the Doctor and his companions. Stay tuned for more of my Doctor Who reactions as I dive deeper into this iconic series.

    You're the first person I've seen react to Doctor Who that picked up on the duplicitous nature of the Doctor from the beginning. While the show definitely characterises him as a hero - and for the most part he is - like any complex character in fiction he is quite capable of lying and duplicity.

      Billie in “Yerma” is one of my favorite live theatre performances of all time. It is the only time an actor’s choices has made me genuinely concerned for their mental health. Every other time even with amazing work, you still know it’s just a role. But she found another level. Thankfully it’s on National Theatre At Home.

    One thing that shocks me every time is just how ordinary Rose looks. Like, the jeans, the hoodie, the make-up, she looks like she could be any girl, she looks like someone I could have known in school. Like I mean obviously Billie Piper is very pretty, but I love what they've done with the costuming, and overall the vibe of the character, that she doesn't look like a supermodel with not a hair out of place, she doesn't feel like she's some genius superhero right from the start, she's just ordinary, and in a way that just makes her all the more intriguing as the series goes on, at least to me

    Mickey cowering and clinging to Rose in the final scene is a neat reversal of all those Frazetta or Vallejo Conan the Barbarian covers where the semi-clad female character is doing the same thing. The Surrealist tenet "The Juxtaposition of Distant Realities" is a valuable tool for Doctor Who that has been made very good use of since the show's first episode back in late 1963. It's first showing was the day after Kennedy's assassination on November 22nd, hence the Dallas reference. Christopher Eccleston's incarnation of the Doctor is very high octane and has a great deal of PTSD baggage from the war, naturally enough, more of which later. Since you are up to episode 7, you already know who with.

    Rose is surrounded by people who behave like children. Just showing micky and Jackie (mom) interact with Rose we learn a lot. The headwriter this season is very good at writing characters who feel real. Eccleston is an excellent actor and some were surprised he took this role. It is implied he regenerated (changed faces) just before this episode, and all the stuff Clive had- the Dallas photos, etc- are things that happened between the time rose said no and the doctor left, and when he came back and said “it also travels in time”. For her it was seconds but it could have been any amount of time for him. This show is delightfully fun and the acting is strong.

    It's so funny how you said it's not too common over in the UK to take models, etc. and have them act in things out of nowhere when that's pretty much exactly what happened. Rose? She's played by Billy Piper. She was a teen pop singer before she landed this role, very similar in style to Britney Spears in my opinion. So this was her first big acting gig. So they really did just take a random pretty face like a model, in her case a pop star, and made her an actor and she fucking killed it.

    • @tna_
      @tna_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tna_ Oh no, she was a singer first. Started her music career at 15 in 1997 and released several #1 hits that made her super popular and she was known as the Pop Princess of the UK. Essentially the Britney Spears of the UK. She quit her music career in 2003 so she could instead go into acting where she got a couple small roles that didn't go anywhere, and a starring role in a horror movie that did terribly but then in 2005 she was cast as Rose Tyler which is when her acting career took off. As a teen she was in a theatre school for a couple years and did some singing in musicals but that's where she was actually scouted by a record label and started her music career. She didn't start acting until several years later. Though she'd wanted to be an actor, she wasn't focusing on classically training at school to get there, she was using her music career to do so, hoping that her popularity as a pop singer would open more doors for her. Prior to Doctor Who, nobody really knew that she could act, they just knew her as a teen Pop Star.

He wants a mortal around, partly to ground him, but also to be impressed by him; can't be the cleverest person in the room if there isn't somebody else in the room. As an acting coach, you will probably be interested that Billy Piper, who plays Rose, although having attended stage school, had no significant acting experience before taking this role. She had been a phenomenally successful teen pop singer and, at the time, many viewed her selection as 'stunt' casting. Billy certainly proved them wrong, going on to have a successful acting career on stage and television winning both plaudits and awards for her work.
    Camille Coduri, who plays Jackie Tyler, is worthy of special mention. Although the character was written primarily as a throw away comic relief, Camille never disappoints and imbues Jackie with far more emotional depth and realism than another actor might have achieved. It's not a great spoiler to say that we'll see Jackie again and it's worth looking out from those moments when Camille switches effortlessly from broad comedy to deep pathos literally in a heartbeat.
    Although serving up a good helping of high camp, there are very dark undertones in many of the stories. Here, for example, we see Clive, the amiable conspiracy theorist, gunned down in front of his wife and children, to say nothing of the other deaths and mayhem throughout London and who knows how far the effects spread?
    Incidentally, while the show is called 'Doctor Who', the lead character's name is simply 'The Doctor' The title is supposed to introduce an element of mystery: "Doctor who?" as well as giving the writers the endless opportunity to drop in the running gag. " Doctor? Doctor who?" which has featured regularly all the way back to the first story in 1963 (remembering there had been 6 seasons in what is now termed the 'Classic Era' before this 2005 relaunch).

Billie Piper went to Sylvia Young, Christopher Eccleston to Central, Noel Clarke the Actor's Centre, Camille Coduri the Lyric Youth Theatre, and the guy in the basement (shed) telling her about the doctor - that was Mark Benton, he went to RADA.

While some of its been counter claimed, one or two cases of physical abuse against women have yet to be denied (including a channel 4 reporter, a BBC1 costume lady and a third un-named woman who complained when he was awarded the BAFTA days after she filed a complaint). Some people will defend him and get very angry because he is still fighting these claims, but at the time of this episode, is when the actions he is accused of is said to happen.

    The thing with the seemingly nonchalance about Mickey (whose actor is Noel Clarke, if you need to Google that whole problem)
    I fully believe it's because Rose is a woman who's basically down on her luck in all aspects. A coward boyfriend who she thinks is the best she could have. A mom who seems to not care if she sleeps around with several guys, and gossips on the phone about Rose with her own daughter in the same room. As well as a typical clothing job.
    Rose isn't really thinking about anything besides what horrors and confusion she's witnessing because her whole life, in her eyes, seems like a disappointment.
    The Doctor, no matter how crass he may be, helped Rose learn there's more and that she's far more important than she realizes.

    just in terms of acting, it would be interesting to see your response to the second and twelfth doctors (patrick troughton and peter capaldi, respectively).
    doctor who is such an enormous show-there are over 60 years of material-so it would be kind of a full-time job to grind through all of it procedurally. picking one story per doctor, though, to compare the choices they make in approaching the role, would, i think, be a neat little project.

    • @GhostPurple69
      @GhostPurple69 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      like, ostensibly the doctor is just the doctor; like sherlock holmes, they're the same character no matter who's playing them. yet each actor brings such a different voice, emphasizes different things in different ways, understands and breaks down the character so differently. a big part of the fun to the show is studying that range of perspectives, and how they turn each version of the character into a different distinct individual.

    • @GhostPurple69
      @GhostPurple69 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if you were to consider this approach, i might suggest (where possible) to select *episode one* of each actor's *second* season or series.
      the reasoning here is,
      1) this gives the actor a full year to explore and develop their take, so what you will be seeing is more distinct a product of their deliberate choices than if you were to compare their first-ever performances.
      2) it avoids cherry-picking the best performances or most interesting moments, in favor of a more level ground of randomness, while still holding a certain common investment in the role
      3) we're not really getting into super spoiler territory this way, should you want to go back and watch through in order. it's just a bunch of well-publicized premieres, setting up pieces for later play.

    Christopher Eccleston was well established as a character actor in serious, gritty, political dramas. Getting him as Dr Who was something of a coup.
    Billie Piper was best known as a former teen pop star with a tabloid-friendly personal life. Her performance in this was a revelation, and she is now well established as a leading actor in the UK.
    Doctor Who always has an element of campiness, but this episode more than most. Keith Boak directed the first recording block, consisting of episodes 1, 4 and 5, and was never asked back. Make of that what you will.

      @tna_ A reboot pilot would involve an element of risk regarding viewers and/or ratings. Not the case here. 'Doctor Who' already had an extremely large audience awaiting its return to television and when it did, they tuned in to that familiar 50 year old theme tune, the recognisable TARDIS Police Box and the twin hearted Gallifreyan who operates it.
      A pilot does not also have worldwide fanclubs and Appreciation Societies before it has even been filmed, never mind aired.
      This was a plain reboot. End of.
