In the video, Pattabhi Jois says that he is the young boy in Kapotasana being stood upon by Krishnamacharya. Pattabhi Jois is actually on the other side of the picture, in shoulder-stand. The same picture also appears in the 1934 book, Yoga Makaranda. In 1934, Jois who was born in 1915 would have been about 19 years old. The boy in the picture is clearly much younger than 19 years old!!!

Sure, i dont try to decrease the role of Shri Krishnamacharya in development of modern hatha yoga movement. But if movie is called "Origins of vodern hatha yoga" picture is incomplete without other schools. Spreading of Iyengar yoga maybe started from 1966 (first edition of Yoga Dipika). First edition of Complete Illustration Book of Yoga by Swami Vishu-Devananda was published in 1960.

Surely Hatha yoga goes back thousands of yrs in India. There appears to be statues in India , several thousands of yrs old, in stone etc of people performing yoga asanas

In 1969 Vishu-Devananda started first international TTC camp in French Canada. Ashtanga Vinyasa was presented in the West since 1975 but became widely popular only in 90-s. I`m talking only about wide popularity whats why we are not going back to Theos Bernard etc. So coming back to 60-s - 70s we can talk about Shri BKS Iyengar popularity, though he created his own approach to asana and pranayama practice, pretty far from Krishnamacharya`s teachings.

Just wondering how authentic the reenactments are... particularly the scene with Krishnamacharya on stage with women. Is this based on fact or fiction?

the source of modern yoga is not only schools founded by Shri Krishnamacharya`s disciples. How its possible to ignore Swami Shivananda`s work and Swami Satyananda Saraswati from Bihar talking about spreading yoga in the West?

True Yoga is Union with the Supreme Being in the Spiritual (breath) Mind more than placing the Body in an uncomfortable Way.
The Breath of God is how we breathe more than how we move or contort our bodies. Pliancy of Mind is greater than compliancy of Will to the will of the Yogi. True freedom of will comes from not needing to follow any other than the Supreme Being. Reason
tells us that the first sin in the Bible was following someone else other than G=d. Yogis are teachers for followers & not leaders.

Tom Ato ,Interesting, but after studying the Bible, the Sutras, the Vedas, A Course in Miracles, Urantia, Taoism, Buddhism, Tibetan books, along with others, I'm still having a hard time with the concept of God. It doesn't appear to exist. It's a nice story, but one that we systematically reject when a more closer expression arrives from some smarty. From polytheism to monotheism. When we evolve, our concept of God evolves. As far as I can see, Consciousness is a result of and bi-product of the awareness of humans. It's comfortable to believe that there exists a conscious effort for all material matter to be erected. But I can't get around the fact that there's no evidence for a God Principal. Taoism seems to express it best. Buddhism comes close. I do however have to pause with Vedanta teachings. As far as teachings that come out of the Middle East, Vedanta seems to express it similarly to Taoism, broadly speaking. I believe in qi-gong, pranayama, and meditation. These practices allow me to have real experiences. Even prayer seems to work, but there is no evidence that it wasn't "mind over matter"(energetic materialism) or even a ubiquitous energy pool that we have a capability to tap into. And that the term God is a label for that which we couldn't correctly express- connected with passe, outdated modes of thought. So, I would say True Yoga is Union with the Supreme Spiritual Breath-Mind. I'm still searching. I go to Hare Krishna temple and chant, sing, study, but I am a hard nut to crack. I am not trying to be disrespectful, or challenge anyone's belief system. Although, I don't believe in belief anymore, or faith. Maybe I never did. I do know that asana practice can lighten ones body and allow energy to flow more freely, therefore, twisting the body in an uncomfortable (not meant to be uncomfortable) position can indeed induce higher states of consciousness and, thus, bring one closer to the Spiritual energetic and causal bodies. The asana practice does indeed deliver pliancy of the mind. There is no reason that tells us the first sin in the Bible is following a teacher not God, but words that tell us that, and maybe a gut feeling. Reason is a totally different thing- forgive my presumption, but I don't see reason as a factor. Enlighten me if you will...
It's o.k. to be a follower, not everyone can be a leader, per say. I would through this out though, and don't take this wrong, faith is for followers, literally following what is written or preached without using ones own mind to look deeply into the professed faith. Forgive me for being contemptuous. True freedom of will is accepting the notion that it's alright to question the concept of a Supreme Being. The choice to follow the Supreme Being is also true freedom if it was a freedom of choice from a mature adult, but not an indoctrinated child that has been fed faith and belief. That is reason.

@@LaoZi2023 This is because the 'I' still exists in you. Your identified to body mind and intellect - God is beyond words and cannot be described, he is within you and pervades everything in the universe/ he is the universe. I suggest exploring Advaita Vedanta :)
