I am fortunate enough to live in the totality path. One of the nicest things about witnessing the totality was knowing that you were experiencing it with millions of other people at about the same time. It's nice to be part of a collective event like that (and it not be some huge tragedy).
The Hardccastles and Simon d'Entremont, the holy trinity of comedy; and throw in a total eclipse of the sun! An experience of a life time. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Glad you didn't spend much time at the top of that hill; gave me the willies. Thanks for the good times.
I'm jealous because I traveled 8 hours, got sunny weather in the days surrounding the eclipse, but was stuck with completely overcast skies during. It was still cool but nothing life-changing. Oh well, I'll see one sometime.
Former Montrealer living in Germany here. I found your channel a couple of days ago. I'm hooked.... I didn't see this eclipse, but I saw a 4 minutes one in Costa Rica in 1991. It's completely engraved in my mind. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Thank you so much Gavin for making the effort to film this view. We weren’t able to see it in the UK as the sun was setting before eclipse. Loved hearing “Meeat Covve” from Amanda again 👌
I was able to get a shot of the partial eclipse, here in Central Alberta. Nothing like what you captured. Phenomenal video, well done guys. and you too Amanda !! As a wildlife photographer, wanting to branch out into landscape photography, I by chance found your site about a month ago. First one watched was the Abraham Lake video. Glad I did because it's been a trip ever since. THEN, to get Simon d'Entremont in this one.......what a plus !!! I learned so much from him as well, Gavin. So much so, that I was featured in Canadian Geographic's 2023 Wildlife Photography of the Year competition with him !! Never got to thank him for what he does for us out here, so......thank you ever so much Simon d'Entremont !! Now, twenty dollars seems to be the going rate. If one of my landscape pictures ever make it to publication, the cheques in the mail !! Cheers,
Fish and total echips!!🤔 That’s the diet out of the window then. I’ve gone off chowder (fish) too. Last time I had it there were feckin bones in!🙄😡 Still envying your snow man, whilst also waiting for the UK to warm up 🤷♂️👍📸
wow, I was getting secondhand anxiety as you were talking about how little you prepared for this. I spent hours and hours over the months leading up to the eclipse figuring out and practicing exactly the settings and photos to take during our 4 minutes of totality. Not having a filter and waiting until totality to check focus, oh man I absolutely could not. To each their own I suppose. My planning paid off, and I got just about every shot I hoped for, but in some ways not worrying about the photos probably helped you just experience the moment more. For your first eclipse is the best to just experience it imo. I hope you enjoyed it regardless, my first total eclipse in 2017 was mindblowing, and I am extremely glad that I decided to drive 7 hours to see & photograph this one
I love this. I would down that seafood chowder just as fast as Amanda. Those switchbacks got my heart going. I was grabbing the arm of my chair. That cabin looked lovely. I'm so glad you all got together with Simon. "Look for the biggest camera rig" LOL Thanks for sharing your images. I planned on going to a place for totality but I could only do a day's drive and the places I could go were calling for cloud cover and rain. So, I ended up closer to home and did sequence shots of the partial. So, I really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing!!! Thanks always for the humor!!! I hope you get to do more videos with Simon.
OMG, couldn’t agree with you more! I went down to a total eclipse in Colorado somewhere in about 2017 - it was absolutely magnificent. An experience I’ll never forget. Seem to me totality was a little over 2 minutes. Glad you all enjoyed the experience. Keep up the great videos. Cheers Jeff Straw, Calgary, Alberta
I drove about 6 or 7 hours to my cousin's house in Arkansas to see it. I set my cameras up in his yard. My rig isn't too the level of Simone's but I did buy a star adventurer tracker. It worked great. All I had to do was take pictures. The week before they said it was going to be cloudy. Even up to the day before we weren't certain. We had a clear sky that day. I photographed it all the way through from start to finish. I took a 9 shot bracket during totality. I'm on my way back home now so I haven't edited my photos yet. I did edit a few with my phone but I can't merge the brackets without my computer. I forgot to change my settings when I got done with the bracket shots so I still had a slow shutter speed and bracketing on when the sun popped back out. I may have got 1 or 2 usable diamond ring shots but I did not get Baily's beads on 3rd contact. I had a second camera being me with a wide angle lens so I could be in the frame. I forgot to take the filter off during totality so those shots are no good. It was an incredible experience that I'll always remember. I'd to go to the 2026 eclipse but I doubt that week happen. Maybe I'll still be alive in 2044. I think I got some great shots. It's hard to tell looking at the back of the camera. But the way I had 4 minutes of totality. My cousin's house was within 10 miles of the center line. And I still screwed up with that much time.
Ace video Gavin . I experienced the 1999 partial eclipse here in the uk . I agree it’s quite a surreal experience. Birds singing then going to roost . Then a bit later doing dawn chorus. There was a bit of wind that day . Then as the eclipse was playing out the wind dropped . The birds stopped singing . It just went weirdly quiet . I shall never forget that day . Not sure if I will see another eclipse.
Meat Cove was quite the novel place to go for this eclipse, especially because the tip of Cape Breton was the only place in Nova Scotia to be within the path AND because Nova Scotia became legend when it was named in the song “You’re So Vain.” The NS reference in the song was “You flew your Learjet to Nova Scotia to see the total Eclipse of the Sun.” Now if you had also flown in a Learjet to NS, then you definitely would have earned some bragging rights, enough to write a book about your eclipse experience. Maybe you still did! Congrats🎉🍾
I shot the Annular Eclipse last year in Capitol Reef NP, for the Total Eclipse I traveled 4 hours to get out from under the cloud cover. Your photo’s turned out fantastic!!! Thank you for sharing the experience.
great video again Gavin, It,s plain to see Amanda enjoys her comfort and grub, bless her, nice explanation on reflected light from the snow, brilliant eclipse images mate.
Gavin, Outstanding job on everything! This goes to show that education can be entertaining. PS, love Nova Scotia! Need to go back and explore the North where you were.
Jesus Gavin, wasn’t expecting those pictures at all! Absolutely beautiful shots. Thanks for sharing your experience with us that weren’t able to experience it for themselves.
Always enjoy when you cross paths with Simon. You should ask if you could go on one of his photo trips to Africa. He might let you carry his lens cleaning wipes. Even though your styles are different you both share some great info.
Wow...I would have loved to have been there to experience this miracle. You were there Mr Gavin. You experienced it. I am in absolute envy of you and you gave Simon d'Entremont a few lessons on the way. What more can you ever want?
We thoroughly enjoyed your videos! We had a fantastic time observing the Eclipse in Dallas, Texas, the high clouds didn't disrupt our experience at all.
I'm really happy you got to see this Gavin. I experienced the 2019 eclipse in the PNW of the US and it was life changing. I opted to not photograph it and just experience it. Next time though, I'm going to try to get some great shots. Your shots are wonderful and I appreciate you sharing the moment with us!
This was my third solar eclipse and I wasn't too excited about the photography, but I did go outside to see the light change. I was glad to see that you and Samantha got some good shots of it, Gavin. Couldn't figure out why you and Simon wanted to climb that hill to photograph it. Were you trying to get closer for a better exposure? I got some fine images of the 2017 total eclipse and I was satisfied to just observe this time. BTW, hope you are starting to feel better now. You are still a little dark under the eyes but as spring progresses you will feel a little better every day. The winter blahs will fade. And don't forget to eat a big bait of the cure-all poke salad when it starts to sprout. You have to pick it early when it is only 3 or 4 inches tall.

I know I have only just watched this extremely special event, but WOW I had goosebumps and loved every moment of that eclipse. Thank you for showing this and take care.
Thankyou so much Gavin for this video, it was fantastic to watch and to see the eclipse. I didn't know how photographers actually took these photo's did they do or use anything different when taking these lovely photos. Looking forward to my book arriving it won't be long now😊. See you next time..
i did the cabot the trail in the winter a couple years ago and I can only image how it would have been with bad tires lol! Here in Ontario we had a few spots in the path of totality yet absoluelty everwhere was packed and we didn't go to the popular spot! Great video!
Another great video! Well done Gavin. 👏 👏 👏 Thanks to you, I'm now starting to look forward to our total eclipse here on the 22 July 2028, even if it's still four yrs away. It cuts right through the centre of Australia, plenty of room for everyone.
Since it was Simon's appearance on your channel that caused his to explode it's only fitting that he sends some your way. Maybe some pro tips from Simon would help as well. I'm also interested in your new book. I'm almost out of fire starter.
Really enjoyed this video. I always enjoy the videos where you show the traveling to the location, stopping off for food, and just enjoying the journey. Love those high quality tips for those of us slightly less prepared for an eclipse (or too poor for for that rig of Simon's). My favorite part of the video was the tips on the winter light with the snow. I live in the desert so I didn't know the snow did that and I really liked the photo of the tree. Great job! Oh, and your eclipse photo was awesome too.
Thanks for sharing this experience with us. Must have been awesome to be there. And you may not have such a big channel as Simon, but as I remember, you were the one introducing him, right? How he took off is incredible, but that’s normal for those type of tutorial videos. I enjoy yours more, because they are more of an experience than just dry information. Good thing there are different types of content. Gavin with his personality which stands out among the crowd, and then Simon for some good tutorial.
What an amazing moment. I heard it was a pretty incredible and weird surreal experience. I can remember seeing one as a kid - yonks ago. I can't remember much of what it felt like or what the experience was like though. Well done on the 90secs of block out.
That was fun to watch! Good to see you driving again! Nice job with your images. Hope the sensor is okay. It is great you could share the experience with someone you love! Safe travels.
Thanks for sharing that! I've avoided watching any videos up to this point knowing I missed something special but your take on it made me finally watch the event - I enjoyed your experience and humour as always!
I betcha Meat Cove had never seen that much traffic before, holy cow...the traffic at the Dunes in Bouctouche was insane, lol. The light just before and after was soooo strange! I didn't even try to make a video that day, even though I had about 3 minutes of totality where we were (too many people around freaks me out still). Those solar eruptions were so cool to see! "Look how he is...as he is!" 🤣 We need to get Gavin that next 11K, he deserves that first 'play button'.
:50 sec into the video and you have Kings Point, Ingonish. Our family came from there and one of the old houses is front and center. Thanks for including Ingonish in your Cape Breton travels.
Sorry Gavin I sent that message to you by mistake. I forgot to pause the vlog I was sending a message to and yours was the next vlog on auto play. I've got fibromyalgia and the fibro fog must have kicked in. 😂
We had totality here for almost two minutes. I took some handheld shots with my Pentax that I'm extremely happy with. I only took a few pictures before putting the camera down and just enjoying the experience. Awesome.
So glad you got to see and photograph it Gavin! So spectacular! We drove 2 1/2 hrs from Michigan to Ohio which was short compared to what some people did. Totally worth it though!! I’d do It again in a heartbeat!
"2 1/2 hrs from Michigan to Ohio which was short compared to what some people did" Too right! We drove 2,000 km over two days from central Canada to southern Indiana, and then did the same to get home. It was well worth the journey. Totality was 3 minutes and 20 seconds; just not enough.
I love Meat Cove and have images from there before the hurricane that came through there. The whole damn island will make you leave part of your heart there.
@@fototripper He's a great photographer, isn't he, but also dry as the Atacama. You might as well have a bit of fun out there. Ever tried that? Yeah, I've been watching yours for a long while, and can see that you occasionally fluke a great shot. (Actually, love all your work.)
My New Book: www.fototripper.com/stories-within-stories-landscape-photography-book/
So where is the comparison between the real camera and the cell phone with the glasses?
Alyn was definitely sat on a cloud watching that
Yeah I hope he got a kick out of it. I did think of him at the time.
I am fortunate enough to live in the totality path. One of the nicest things about witnessing the totality was knowing that you were experiencing it with millions of other people at about the same time. It's nice to be part of a collective event like that (and it not be some huge tragedy).

Travelled 6 hours to photograph totality in NY state, USA. One of the most profound experiences of my life. I'll remember this to the day I die.
I'm jealous because I traveled 8 hours, got sunny weather in the days surrounding the eclipse, but was stuck with completely overcast skies during. It was still cool but nothing life-changing. Oh well, I'll see one sometime.
Come on peeps! Give a thumbs up! He needs and deserves more subscribers. Humor and photography are like rum and coke. Drink up!
Is Rum and Coke back in vouge? So 1980's 🙂
You're thinking of Southern Comfort and Coke. That was the 80's in Yorkshire.
@@fototripper Coming back to me now. Down south it was Bicardi and Coke, or rum if you were posh.
@@melvilib Rum and coke never goes out of style. It is not a fad drink.
it is such an oddly emotional experience. Great video!
Definitely need more of you two, and it is great to see Simon a little less polished. Great vid!

Glad you did this @fototripper, many of us do our photography vicariously through you, so you photographing this, feels like me photographing it!
My two favorite TH-cam photographers together! More, do more 👏🏼👏🏼😂
Thank you so much Gavin for

Watched the eclipse from our farm in southern Indiana while my son shot some photos. It was a amazing day. Thanks for the video. Be Safe.
Two of my favorites!
Hi Gavin, great video. So, I realize the topic is about total eclipse, however, in South Florida, Miami-specifically, at 15:12 EST.
I looked up and saw cloud cover acting as a natural diffuser. I was out walking without my camera equipment; all I had was my iPhone12. I decided to zoom all the way in and got a really nice shot of the partial eclipse seen in this area, perfectly framed by palm tree branches and clouds circling the sun. Too bad I cannot upload a copy of the shot to share it.
My two favourite You Tubers in the same video, awesome
Wow...this looked like an amazing experience.
Awesome, my two favorite you tubers! ❤
I traveled from Duluth, MN to Vincennes, IN for 4 minutes of totality. I worked with Vincennes University to project the eclipse for others to view on campus while I was photographing the event. That was so fun to watch! Great video and having Simon there too was awesome. I wasn't in the direct path here in WI but it was still pretty cool.
Our home was in the middle of totality during the 2017 eclipse & the light and feeling during an eclipse is INCREDIBLE!
You lucky sod, not only having it close and available but also spending time with your protégé :-)
Quality images Pal
heheh cheers mate.
Sooo jealous! Great pics, Gavin!
It was a top 5 experience for me... came away with amazing photos and likewise a YT Video... I had over 4 minutes :) Greenville TX

See you next time..

So happy you got to experience it...and thank you for taking us for the ride...In the Laurentians, Qc, we had partial but the light was amazing.
Amazing vlog Gav realy enjoyed it. Top notch.
I just loved this!!! Nothing more to say about that really! 🌙🌙🌙
Great shots! Glad the path was close to you
I was in western Ohio. Didn’t even bring a camera so I could experience the event. That light just before totality was eerie. Almost gray scale.

How fantastic. Being in the southern hemisphere we didn't get to see it so thanks very much 😁
Thank you for sharing this one Gavin. The photography is great, but the experience you shared even better. Always an inspiration.
Great video, as ever, Gavin! Truly the shenanigans are alive :)
Great capture of the sun flares.
It was such an awe-inspiring event. I've seen two total solar eclipses now, and I'm hooked.
What a beautiful spot to be! Loved the time lapses that showed how dark it was. Thought the same thing about the light. It was werid. Good video!

"Look how he is...as he is!" 🤣
We need to get Gavin that next 11K, he deserves that first 'play button'.
True dat.
:50 sec into the video and you have Kings Point, Ingonish. Our family came from there and one of the old houses is front and center. Thanks for including Ingonish in your Cape Breton travels.
It's a pretty spot and we love the cafe up there. Brookside does decent breakfast sarnies.
Gavin: The Pied Piper of Meat Cove!
(Nice shots!)
Fantastic foties Dan. I bet Pops can't wait to grab his Z9 back from you and get some great foties too. ❤
@@OptimisticHominid That’s so cool! Glad it worked out for you too!
Great job! You and your lovely wife AND SIMON?!? Excellent!!! Thanks for the time lapse, too. Now I need to go see what Simon got….🤭
I love Meat Cove and have images from there before the hurricane that came through there. The whole damn island will make you leave part of your heart there.
Yeah. I'll give you a like, because it has Simon in it.
All of my other videos do too, go check them out ;)
@@fototripper He's a great photographer, isn't he, but also dry as the Atacama. You might as well have a bit of fun out there. Ever tried that?
Yeah, I've been watching yours for a long while, and can see that you occasionally fluke a great shot. (Actually, love all your work.)
