I know Vinny's audience usually despises the HD-2D graphics like Octopath and Live-a-Live, but those Dragon Quest remakes look delicious. Honestly it was a very fun direct. Thanks for the video.
The colors look so good in the DQ remakes. My biggest gripe with the 2d/3d style was how dull and washed out the backgrounds were, and the heavy bloom effects. DQ looks like its colors are balanced nicely. It actually looks different from the others!
it looks better with each release. m y main complaint now is just the name. it sounds so pretentious. "our 2d is better than your 2d", when the point is that its 2d sprites with 3d effects and sensibilities. 2D-3D would be a much better name
@@RealityMasterRogueI’m guessing they’re waiting until they’ve essentially perfected the HD-2D (I’m still calling it that) artstyle before remaking Chrono Trigger.
Live A Live's remake had way better colors than Octopath 1. As another person pointed out, their style has been improving. I think some Gen Xers soured on Asano because they thought he was going to make the next "real" Final Fantasy game instead of the stuff he and his teammates have actually made. This accidental betrayal is, I suspect, the baggage Vinny is referring to whether he realizes it or not (for the record, I do not think he is one of the salty detractors).
I don't quite understand vinny's concerns with prime 4. It has a big action set piece sure. Metroid prime 1 starts with a boss fight and an exploding spaceship. It's really not too different. The trailer ends with the most metroid prime looking metroid prime ass location and music. I don't want to sound too optimistic but I really really really doubt everyone involved suddenly forgot what metroid games are about. Metroid Prime remastered is also the best looking game on switch easily and runs at a perfect 60 on top of that. I just see no reason to doubt prime 4 currently.
I thought the trailer was very predictable. Show Samus leaving the ship, space pirates getting destroyed in the base, MORPH BALL, and end with the villain reveal. Compared to Metroid Dread's trailer it was underwhelming. Good thing it's only a trailer and the game should be fine.
Oh is that who that was in the trailer? My Prime knowledge is from the Switch remaster of 1 but that's something fun to know. I'll have to check out Prime Hunters
@@hazbobaggins It had an amazing online mode. I made some of my best online friends that I still talk to today on there. There was no chat if you didn't have someone added as a friend so you had to give out your friend code by shooting it in a wall number by number because the number of "bullet holes" your cannon left behind when you shot something was severely limited.
As someone who knows very little about the Hunters, Sylux was such a good pick because he just has that really cool look that makes him perfect for a game like this. He looks good in the trailer and he'll make a good villain/rival for Samus.
I always saw that series as like...ok, bare with me for a second... So like, street fighter is mortal kombat for people with low attention spans, and like, mvc is street fighter for people who have even lower attention spans. Like I'm not saying it's a bad game but that's the impression I get from it
@@terdragontra8900 I really don't see how it's so far removed from other Zelda games in this style tho. Looks like you'll still be dungeon diving, solving puzzles, beating bosses, exploring, discovering powers, saving the kingdom, and fighting monsters, just that you'll be doing it mostly with magic and summons instead of melee and items. I really don't see how this comes even close to spin-off.
He was probably pogging during that reveal, i know I was and I don’t even care about Nintendo but damn they’re making me want to get a switch for Prime 4.
I found it a bit annoying it's absurd that he thought it wouldn't be on nintendo switch they literally announced it for the switch and it's been in development for years hasodif
Capcom could've easily waited until EVO for the MvC Collection announcement and the venue would've crumpled due to the sheer amount of jubilations echoing from the premises but even here, the screams that were scrumt can be heard around the world.
Mvc2 is fucking insane like I cannot stress that enough. It's actually a step above the Scott Pilgrim game coming back. This seemed downright 1 in 9 million impossible. Now it's back alongside every other game that came out with it. The odds of 4 happening now are actually possible like wtf. Crazy. Investigations 2 is cool too. How would you feel if after Samus's ship landed Waluigi popped out instead and said "Aww yeah!!! Waluigi time!" and the rest of the trailer was just him bathing in disgusting trash filled sewage water and loving it?
It is actually insane how people see "HD-2D" and instantly write it off. I agree that it does not work for EVERY sprite game, but for a majority of them, I think it fits very well especially within the Modern era. Like...I hope people dont think every RPG remake is gonna be FF7R by any stretch of the imagination. Obviously, OT is the main culprit since it was generally received in a negative way, however they have only IMPROVED as the years gone by, we are in 2024 now and even the latest OT2 looks incredible. So does DQIII, and I am excited to see them push this design toward looking even better to hopefully get people to stop judging the visual design without actually giving it any fore-thought.
I just think it's a boring way to remake these games. It's like they lifted the ground up like a popup storybook, instead of reimagining the world of the game with a unique artstyle. I'd like to see some fully 3d remakes of old jrpgs if they're going to remake them.
Oh I can understand that! I suppose it’s a matter of taste and preference then. But I think if you inspect deeper than just the trailer and look at the dynamic lighting, and the small details (mainly in like OT2) you can really respect the effort it takes to make it. In the surface, while I understand it seemingly be lazy, there is so much more complexity to making sprite work mesh with 3D backgrounds correctly. An example of a bad use of HD-2D is the new Star ocean 2 remake, thay one wasn’t done by the studio but was inspired and is lacking a lot. Overall, 3D models instead of sprites can be fun but also risky imo of course
It's perfect for the sorts of people who passively watch media to the point that owning a funko pop is the best they can do to show their appreciation for it
This was a top tier direct, up there with E3 2018. The Marvel vs Capcom revival threw me through a loop, was not expecting that at all and it's the first time in a while I had a "YO!" moment in a game show.

I was convinced Prime 4 was silently cancelled. A game revealed at the start of the switch, finally comes out near the end. I hope Retro gets a good long break after the development hell it must have went through.
@superlagbro192 Yes, that is part of the development struggles. Imagine people working on it from the start, only to find out development is resetting, then having to spend so long on the game that the console you release it on is nearly at its end by the time it finishes. The fact it took so long to show any gameplay gives me the feeling they were really trying to make sure it was as good as possible. That's still a ton of work, and I hope every dev who worked on it gets to take it easy for a while. Prime 1 had a rough development cycle, and the og Dread planned for the ds (yes, different team, I know) too, so it seems that unfortunately, the series has a history with games getting into rough times.
@@CeHee123 from my understanding they said it got restarted by a *different* studio so at least its new devs on the restart, maybe some project leads or something but mostly it was a new studio.
@MaRoFu And you know what, that was an excellent call because Retro is THE studio for Metroid Prime. They're really the only ones that can do MP right, especially after what Next Level Games did with Federation Force.
Yeah we definitely knew it wasn't silently canceled since it was still on Nintendo's investor briefings as an upcoming title, it was just a thing of how long exactly development was going to take before its finally ready

Well I did feel like that too but after thinking about it I realize it didn't make sense, Nintendo keeps marketing the game as a Switch game, therefor they HAVE to launch it in the current system, kinda like what happened to Zelda Botw
My guy is saying seven boards isn’t a lot for mario party, when the average for a game is usually six. In addition, only three other mario party games have had seven or more boards, so technically, we're eating good here.
Damn, Vinny is complete. He really just taps into the dubbed announcer like it's nobody's business. "The sticky boy is back! He's dripping with excitement!"

This direct could have screamed "Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2" at me for 40 minutes and it would have been one of the best Nintendo Directs of all time.
I'm surprised how many people (Vinny included) seemed to get *less* excited when they showed off that you're not just doing traditional zelda gameplay Like this shit looks so cool idk. im kinda glad zelda gets something different and specifically something that relates to her being essentially the embodiment of Wisdom
Ive wanted a 2d zelda and while Im looking forward to this game, its too different to fill the space of a new 2d zelda. Feels almost like a spin off with how non traditional it is.

For a second I thought they just straight up used an AI voice for the Funko Fusion segment. It was such a perfect fit for that crusty footage that it fooled me. Thank you Johnathan Fullsauce.
Genuinely shocked how not-big Vinny was on the new Zelda game, like it's not like the 2D top-down Zeldas are known for their amazing combat. It's just applying the sort of BotW/TotK freedom of puzzle-solving to the 2D style, it's no different from items like the Cane of Somaria from Link to the Past, which has the amazing ability of... spawning one whole block! Ooooh!
I do have to say... I dont want too much open worldness in my Zelda titles too, like I miss my classic Zelda titles with elaborate dungeons done in order and getting new key items which help exploring the world more then.. go wherever you want from the start of the game with little to no limitations. Like I'm kinda sick/be hatin' on the post Skyward Sword era of Zelda titles.
It looks amazing. The puzzles are the best part of 2d zelda, I won't miss the sword. But it's not like the game he grew up with so it's bad, apparently.
@Zangelin hates skyward sword tho. Which is all sword. You can play botw/totk with only sword if you want. Hates that too. Maybe if we got another oot remake/remaster, maybe he'd enjoy it.
I also think asking for 10, whilst lovely, is an overkill demand for a series that gets a game every few years. The quality would be all over the place, and I'd rather quality over quantity. All 7 of these look good, and I would rather 7 fleshed out boards than 10 boards where only half are actually good because they had to rush 10 out to meet the deadline. Its better than 4. Just be happy with what we got.
Even the Zoras of the 3D installments are here, alongside their 2D brethren (I’ve heard them be called freshwater and saltwater Zoras to differentiate them, but I don’t know how official that distinction is).
For Prime 4, they have it on their video that it'll be on the switch in the description. The new console seems to be quite a ways off based on these release dates
Also even when Gameplay for Breath of the Wild was revealed back in E3 2016 they just used Wii U footage instead of Switch footage before the Switch was even announced. So why would Nintendo just randomly show Switch 2 footage when they haven't even revealed the console.
I honestly had the exact same reaction until rewatching it more. It looks amazing but I'd rather not lie to myself about the fact that it's sorta visually bland.
@@Gamxin I mean, we've basically only seen the intro of the game, and probably like the first screen of the overworld. If the only thing I had to judge Metroid Prime 1 on was the Frigate and the first *room* of Tallon IV, it'd probably seem kinda underwhelming too.
Just given the fact retro is doing prime 4 i have complete hope it's going to nail what the series is about. The big set piece is definitely just the opening
It never left. The Switch is the epitome of that philosophy. The problem is that a lot of the Americans who say that stuff are just talking about their country's corporate devs (ex: Activision) hoovering up resources from indie devs and not about HD games themselves. Hence we have Vinny complaining about "bad graphics" in a AAA game so he can complain about a Japanese corporate dev not making the type of console he expects as an 80s kid.
Real. Most of us didn't wait 7 years for Metroid Prime 4 just for people to complain it's not 30fps even though it already looks impressive for the Switch, frame rate aside. Graphics should matter a bit, just so it doesn't look too ugly, but not be the whole reason the game exists.
Graphics, and by extension art direction, character design, and everything else that comes with that absolutely matter. Same with the sound design, plot if it has one. I don't care what the gameplay is like if a game is ugly as fuck with annoying music. If your favorite game was turned visually into a garfield shovelware game for the wii but with the same exact gameplay, you would say it isn't worse?
@@blueyosh43 I would say that the Garfield game is an underrated gem that people are sleeping on because of the graphics and the subject matter. That said, all of my favorite games were made before 9/11, so a Wii version of any of them would technically be an upgrade.
graphics matter new high end hyper realistic graphics dont matter as much as a game looking clean lots of people think 2dhd looks chunky. even me but i always worry about gameplay more
I hope Vinny is mentally prepared for the fact that many games will still be developed with the original Switch in mind for years to come. There's no fucking way from a business perspective that Nintendo will just DROP their consumer base of 140+ million consoles. Games are still being developed for PS4/ Xbox One because people still play them just as much of not more than their modern counterparts.
Vinny rolling his eyes at anime games will never not be confusing to me after listening to him gush about FF7, Tifa in particular. Nothing wrong with it, just confusing.
@ghostie487 I believe it's 7 remake that he's glazing from what I'm hearing because they're literally the recent ones that are coming out. Though I don't understand why 3 games instead of one game. Because it's a remake, I expect it to be one game if they're making a remake from the ground up.
The only anime games I've ever really enjoyed are the old DBZ arcade fighting games. I can't speak on anything Fairy Tail because it never I was never interested in watching it. Even other more modern anime I actively follow wouldn't interest me in game form. I saw the show. Maybe read the manga. Thats good enough for me. If you enjoy those games, I'm happy for you that another one is coming.
Also, I don't want him to throw the baby out with the bathwater because I've seen really good anime games from time to time, and people at least put effort into those games for a reason.
"We see gameplay, and the first thing they show is a TABLE." Well if you think about it, if you are trying to introduce something to a wide audience, it could make sense to keep it simple and relatable. And guess what, you can't spell relatable without TABLE.
I don't get what's blinding Vinny to the new Zelda game. It is much less of a departure than BotW was, "completely different"? If BotW can throw out the whole lock-n-key structure of the overworld exploration, the dungeon crawling, the item collection etc and still be a Zelda game, why does what is essentially a traditional 2D Zelda swordless run not get the same? Weird perception.
Everyone keeps complaining about the boards and it confused me because I'm used to people attacking Mario Party for diverging from the past, especially when people compared previous new games in the series with 4 or 5 boards to past ones (where apparently 6 is great but 5 is abhorrent). But now there's a game with 7, suddenly we need 10. I'm all for more boards but it annoys me the focus on quantity over quality in terms of discussion, along with how people kept comparing to the past and only now compare to something like Mario Kart with 96 courses.
Hoping for more DLC throwback boards. But with that being said, people are ignoring the fact that there's 110 mini games, and mini games are the best part of mario party. Also additional game modes. I think this game has enough going for it for it's initial release.
The Batchesters that automatically batchest at anything Disney adjacent during the MvC section are actual squares. They have no damn clue how big of a deal and how beloved those games are.
I have never understood that complaint that this new Mario party lacks boards?? It literally has more than the standard for all games, which would be 6 boards. Literally the game with the most boards is Mario party 1 with 8, just one more than this new one, to be fair two are old boards but still

@@wumpyjumps Yeah, I didn't think it looked like anything the Switch wouldn't be capable of. Especially if they keep the rooms/environments relatively small and the model counts low. The Switch is pretty weak, but a lot of the stuff people judge for it's graphics are either big open world games which are resource hogs, or rushed and poorly optimized stuff like Pokemon.
New 2D Zelda! It's the same Zelda formula we already love that makes use of items and magic to get through dungeons and solve puzzles, so I'm confused as to why some are seeing it as a spin off or not a traditional Zelda game.
People always freak out when a Zelda game reveals it has a goofy gimmick the gameplay centres around every time despite the fact it’s integral to what makes the series special Link can turn into a painting, link can become tiny, link can play a flute, link can build vehicles, link can become a wolf, link can drive a train etc etc etc People forget that every time a new game comes out and they expect some straightforward action adventure with no personality of its own

We've had deadass nothing for seven years. The trailer needs to show that the game fucking *rips* and I think it did.
As far as graphics go, the new mario & luigi game looks exactly how imagined a new one would look on the switch.
Sylux's entrance was so fucking hype.
Prime Hunters is a core memory for me.

As someone who knows very little about the Hunters, Sylux was such a good pick because he just has that really cool look that makes him perfect for a game like this. He looks good in the trailer and he'll make a good villain/rival for Samus.

@@Ashurman666 I haven't played the original but the remake does look nice.
@@Bone237 Sprites are better than 3d models. more HD-2D please.

I was convinced Prime 4 was silently cancelled. A game revealed at the start of the switch, finally comes out near the end. I hope Retro gets a good long break after the development hell it must have went through.
Did you miss the part where the game was restarted a year after announcement? It took a pretty reasonable 6 years of dev time to make.

People dismissing a game instantly for its graphics is so unfortunate. I think we need to bring back the "graphics don't matter" campaign.
7 boards is literally above average...for a Mario Party game.
Most of them have 6.
Mario Party 1 has 8 which is an outlier and Mario Party 9 has...7.
And 1’s boards are pretty controversial.
