Adequately demonstrating why I think the Model 1895/.405 is the best lever rifle/cartridge ever.
Though the Model 71/.348 is my favorite. I have an original of both and a Miroku made repro of both. Mine were made in the 1990s (model 71) and 2002 (Model 1895). When they both were drilled and tapped for receiver sights and no unnecessary crossbolt safety.
I like the case coloring on your 1895. That was not available when I bought mine.

I would have really liked to have gotten an 1895 405 like yours with the color case hardened receiver, but when I was looking for one, the only one I could find at the time was the Teddy Roosevelt commemorative model, the one with the silver receiver. I was looking for a "using" model but the price was right and Teddy would have approved. The rifle does have pretty wood and all the engraving is nice too. Best of all, the rifle shoots well and took a real nice 13 inch antelope buck. I would like to get a deer with it now. I was tempted to take it on a moose hunt but my tag was a "once in a lifetime" affair and I decided something with a bit more reach would be better. My favorite 30-06 served nicely. I would still love to take the 405 on an elk, moose, or bear hunt, but with my advancing age and deteriorating health, a deer would be more likely.

I know there are bigger badder guns, small cuter tamer , but the .405 has always been like that gun that just really hit my fancy. 1895 in 7.62x54R as well. Another outstanding comparison with impressive performance by both calibers. They performed just as you predicted with the longer .405 with great sectional density really penetrating deeply. I also agree that the 45-90 should have a heavier bullet because that also gives it greater sectional density. Maybe I missed it, but if you ever run up on an original or reproduction Winchester in .40-60 (thanks a lot Tom Selleck), I would really like to know your opinion of the round. I'm considering having a gunsmith conversion to .40-60 done to one of my real Marlins but I'm just a bit reluctant to go that route since the .444 Marlin factory chambering works so well for me on hogs and deer. out to about 250 yards or so.
