My daughter & her children’s father are deaf. When they went to Court for custody of their children the Interpreter was often missing or not available. Several times they tried to have the hearing in front of the Judge without an ASL Interpreter. I finally had to stand up & sat “with all due respect you wouldn’t make a Spanish speaking person stand up in front of the Judge & conduct hearings. If they speak Spanish they would not understand anything being said. Using ASL to communicate is just as deserving of an interpreter as any foreign language speaking person. They thought if they spoke loud & slow they would understand or they could read everyone’s lips during the proceedings. My Daughter reads my lips but that is because she knows me. Strangers are not easy to read. Especially if they have an accent. I can’t imagine what it is like in prison for any Deaf people. It must be so stressful & scary. You can’t hear people coming up behind you or while your sleeping.
"Take my client who's deaf. Like many deaf people, he can't read or write in English because his language is American Sign Language." Deaf people can read and write in English, I know, it seems crazy but it's true. It's like, as if, the ability to not being able to hear; is not connected at all to the ability of being able to read or write. My deaf teacher, and many more of my teachers, can read and write in English, them being deaf wasn't an obstacle. My personal teacher knows English, ASL (American Sign Language), and even Spanish, and yes, they are deaf.
maplelove1422 she’s just saying that HE didn’t know how to read or write because as a Deaf person the only way HE could communicate was with ASL lol she wasn’t referring to the whole Deaf community
@@marrerochica no, nope, that’s not true at all. I can guarantee u by millions times. I’m deaf and knows how to read and write. Look at me, I’m writing this right now. Shame on yourself for assuming all deaf people couldn’t. I have met some hearing people who couldn’t read or write, that which makes them look more dumber. I’m hope I’m wrong about this but, hey, we have our own different levels of reading and education experiences. Go ahead judge me, I have a good life by earning 40 an hour for just teaching ASL to hearing student. Actually, there is a Deaf Mayor in Philadelphia area. So… what is ur argument? Lol Also, my cousin just climbed on the top of Mt. Everest. Just look it up. Google is ur best friend. :)
Many Deaf people are bilingual, or even trilingual, that is true. But not all. English is written (loosely) based on sound. If a person has never heard spoken English in their life, it is like an American trying to read Korean without having ever heard the language: it is possible, but not necessarily easy. Congratulations on being fully bilingual, @maplelove1422. You and your teachers are a clear example that Deaf people CAN. I know several Deaf people whose English is better than most hearing people. But please remember that not all Deaf people have had access to good education. Many were put in mainstream classrooms without access to a visual language. Some were put in Special Ed classrooms simply because they couldn't hear. Many have suffered from language deprivation - not because of any fault of their own, but because of society not giving them what they had a right to. So for those people, yes English can be a challenge. I am sure that we can agree that it is not fair to the man in the video to have to struggle and risk going back to prison because the police station did not value his access to language.
