    I have about 20 Spireas here in western PA..... the only thing I have that the deer won't touch 😊
    Thanks for the pruning advice!

    I have that exact same kind of spirea, the kind with pink flowers that bloom in summer as opposed to spring and grows in a mound. If you take the time to clean out all those random leaves and whatnot that just magnetize to spirea in the fall from the branches that remain after you're done pruning it back in late winter or very early spring, you'll have your spirea return to its seasonal beauty sooner by it growing in much more quickly in the spring, along with growing in thicker and more uniform in shape. Be sure to wear gloves because those little freshly cut spirea branches can be sharp.
    When I haven't also gone in and cleaned out all the fall leaves and whatnot that the spirea branches just love to grab onto in the fall and over winter when I do my late-winter to very early spring pruning back of my spirea, all those leaves that have gotten stuck in there since the fall before create dense shade beneath and inhibit its growth, inhibiting it unevenly, so the spirea grows in much slower in the springtime, much less full and lush over the course of spring and summer as all those leaves remain in there blocking light and new growth, and much less uniform in shape as areas where trapped dead fall leaves are thicker result in slower growth and a very uneven hedge, as opposed to a clean round, full, lush, even mound.

    I've pruned mine after they're done flowering around the 4th of July, & any time they get leggy, I like symmetrical mounds of spirea. I'm really surprised I haven't killed them with my random pruning habits. If I don't get to them in the fall, they for sure get a good trim around Mother's Day & yes depending on how they look around the 4th of July, they may get it again. I live in central MN. I know I should prune them sooner but every year we're getting snow later & later, so much for "global warming" Great Video!! I know what I'm doing tomorrow!!

    Thank you for the advice. My inherited pink spirea was looking like a thicket, with very few flowers. Having watched your video I cut it right back to the ground 2 years ago. Come the following springtime it wasn’t doing very much and I thought, oops I have messed up and it isn’t going to come back, however, new shoots appeared on the wood and it flowered lovely last year. This year it looks beautiful. I like it for the Autumn leaf colour too, thanks.

    Very helpful and thanks! I am in the process of trimming seven of these pink summer-blooming spirea on the Oregon property we have recently bought and I don't think they've been trimmed in well over 10 years, maybe closer to 20. The ones we have were at least twice the size of your "overgrown" shrub before we started - - probably over four feet high and now reduced to one foot. I hope they bounce back! We also have about seven bridal wreath spirea to contend with that are even bigger, but they are coming out of dormancy already in late March and I think we need to wait until after their spring bloom.

    I like to use hedge trimmers to prune these. Then I mulch the waste into the yard with a mulching mower so less waste go to the landfills. The grass always grows greener and thicker in that spot.

    I did this to a couple dozen of my old plants last winter. I used an electric hedge trimmer which is the way to go if you have a lot of these bushes. My plants had a lot of dead branches, so I went through them, sort of rubbing them with a gloved hand after trimming and broke out a lot of the dead wood. They were gorgeous in spring but by late summer the crazy new growth was splayed out 6 feet wide. I assume a second pruning after the plants bloomed would have prevented this.

    Good video. These things are incredibly tough. Most of the princess in our area (southeast PA) looked to be in almost suspended animation this spring which I think has to do with how warm it was through December last year - they didn't go dormant until mid-winter and by April still had about 20% of their leaves from the year before and just sat in this state until mid-June. Right now they look better than ever and have held blooms all summer despite the heat and wild precipitation swings.
    I have a couple big ones in my back yard (not sure which species - small white blooms in the spring) that have gotten to be 4-5' across and I need to scale them way back. Had no idea they could be cut back this aggressively.

    I just bought a house in NW Missouri. There are 60 spirea shrubs out back in a row. They start at about 4 ft high and at the other end are almost 10 feet tall. There are of course weed trees growing inside of them that have to be removed. I would like to just trim them all back to about three feet high and clean up the circumference of the shrubs and have a nice clean line of spirea. When can I do this without hurting the bushes?

    Hi! Wondering if you can help me out - I have a beautyberry and a deutzia that are both very similar in shape. They got very wildly unkempt this last season because I didn’t prune them the season before, so I was looking to renewal prune them to keep their shape more controlled. They are currently low to the ground, very spindly and sprawling out, with lots of tangled and crisscrossing branches.
    Am I able to renewal prune these bushes back (as you demoed with Spirea) in late winter (now)? If not, what’s the best way to manage their tangled and messy shape? In particular, it looks like the deutzia has buds already formed on its branches.

    HELP...ANYONE. I have a spirea bridal wreath. I love it. It still flowers like a champ, but It's 5 years old, and I have never cut it. I would like to keep it under 4 feet tall (pref 3 feet). Is that possible? Did I mess up by planting a shrub that wants to grow up tall. I thought about taking cuttings, and if any root, I would plant them where a beautiful bridal wreath spirea could be free to do its thing. I put this plant in front of the guest house on our property, and it would be beautiful as a smaller shrub. Today is like March 27th, and it's on the tail end of its bloom. I'm in Georgia. Thanks any thoughts appreciated.

    Hi John, I am Marcus Zuhlke from Spokane Washington; I have 15 spirea on my property, these shrubs have never been renewal pruned to my knowledge (I have lived in the house since 2002). The house was a rental before I bought it so it is my assumption the plants have not been renewal pruned for about 22 years. My concerned is that these old shrubs may be adversely affected if I prune them severely. Would it be safe to renewal prune my old spirea, or should I consider replacing them?

    Moved into a town home that had 3 dead small spirea's. Pulled them out and added rose bushes that did not survive. The HOA took out the rose bushes and planted 3 more.spirea;s. They are still very small and do not look healthy. Is there something i could add to the soil that will help them survive. I have rock all around so difficult to mix up soil. I have a feeling its the clay in the soil because it gets watered and has good sun. Thanks for your time.

    • @cathyjacobs7489
      @cathyjacobs7489 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for responding. No they are not. Some of our neighbors are having the same problem and others look great. That is why i was wondering if there was a liquid fertilizer that would help them survive. I would have to pull up the rocks, black mesh to get at the dirt. Hoping not to go that. They are located next to the house with about 2 1/2 feet from house to sidewalk and they are about 3 feet apart. Perfect amount of sun. Other things on our property are doing fine.

    • @CTSCAPER
      @CTSCAPER  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A hard prune will bring them back if they don't die. You're doing it at the right time of the year so I'd go ahead and cut them back hard. Only Mother Nature knows how they'll do but I have very good luck with survival if you prune now.

    What do you recommend for fertilizer for Spirea?

    • @CTSCAPER
      @CTSCAPER  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the mulch breaks down it will improve the soil, if you want to improve the soil quicker you could spread some dehydrated cow manure around the base of the plant. I don't do synthetic fertilizers around plants, it causes unnatural growth.

      I don't see why not. They are really HARDY shrubs. if it were me, I'd give it a good pruning before you dig it up just because it'll be less of a mess & easier to handle when you transplant. if you chose to wait & transplant without prior pruning, do it after you've transplanted. If I buy one from the Garden Center, it gets shaped/trimmed after I plant it.
