Spirea are shrubs that responds best to hard pruning. I’ve literally cut down to the ground & they spike back up early spring. I love them.

Can you cut back spirea in October?
Yeas you can but I’d say give it a light trim to shape it up and wait until spring to do a deeper cut back. Just being cautious in the event of a very deep, prolonged freeze over the winter which could cause some stem dieback
