    Surely you still remember the shocking moment in 2019 when the Tesla Cybertruck window shattered on stage. It was a moment many folks will never forget and until now this glass still attracts a lot of questions about the material as well as the durability. To tackle the concerns, Elon gave the Cybertruck an upgrade with a revolutionary glass that is being utilized on Starship. So what exactly is this new material? What breakthroughs has it brought to Cybertruck?
    Let’s find out in today’s episode of Tesla Car World!
    Welcome back to our channel. Before we begin, please show your support by subscribing, if you haven’t already, and ringing the bell so you won't miss out on any of our interesting videos in the future. Now, let’s get started with today's content!
    But the "Armor Glass" failed the Cybertruck again in front of the audience because the glass on the driver’s side cracked instantly and went all the way up to the edges of the window. That means almost everyone can’t stop thinking about that glass.
    Thus, after the unfortunate incident happened, Elon Musk assured the audience that Tesla would fix the shortcomings of the Armor Glass in the coming future with new material. He said that transparent metal glass would represent an innovation for Cybertruck.
    Transparent metal isn’t a new thing. In fact, it’s been around for quite some time now. And if you’re a Star Trek nerd, you’ll know that transparent aluminum was a thing in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Stuck in the 20th century, Scotty needed to build an aquarium tank that could transport whales in their ship back to the future, but needed a lightweight and strong material to do it. He gave the transparent aluminum formula to a plexiglass company to make it for them. It sounds like a fictional story. Is transparent aluminum real? Yes, that's the answer.

    Window glass for side windows is different from the safety glass for windshields. Side windows are tempered so they will shatter into tiny pieces so that during a crash they break into harmless fragments instead of large dangerous shards and so after the crash passengers and rescue workers can get through the windows. Derp.

    • @reyfetsalmo3346
      @reyfetsalmo3346 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah on normal car or truck, but cyber truck looks like it has safety glass on all 4 corners.

    • @416dl
      @416dl ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@reyfetsalmo3346 Which means that should a Cybertruck for any reason be part of a serious accident where the passengers have to get out, the side windows, just like the front windshield with it safety glass (glass designed of two sheets of glass sandwiching a tough transparent membrane designed to withstand tearing from a lot of force in impacts and to not break away but to actually prevent passengers from being thrown out of the vehicle where they'd be subject to far more serious injury) the side windows would stay in place with large pieces of sharp glass and make rescue all the more difficult. No, safety glass on the side windows are not normally allowed on side windows by law for a reason and a purpose. There may be exceptions for armored cars but I'm pretty sure that by federal statute the side window need to be tempered not laminated safety glass. But who knows what sort of intricacies there might be in regards to these new vehicles. I'd still feel safer in a vehicle I knew I would not be as like to be trapped inside of after an accident. Cheers.

      @jefflittle8913 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "they break into harmless fragments instead of large dangerous shards"
      I am not buying it. The smaller the glass fragment the more dangerous it is. Safety glass actually has a top and bottom layer that ensure that after the different fragments are created they end up "taped together" instead of becoming a fragment grenade.

    • @416dl
      @416dl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jefflittle8913 Well, OK...but in a typical car crash where velocities are relatively low and at relatively low energy would you rather push your body through a picket fence of long sharp jagged shards some of which might be several inches long, or be sprayed by a shower of lima bean sized and irregularly shaped glass cubes; those are what you have in a typical car crash, which is what we are talking about; not a small fragment of glass propelled by explosives at high speed as in a grenade. As I mentioned in an armored car which is designed to withstand attacks from modern weapons and explosives these requirements would be different and side windows are not expected to break away into relatively harmless cubes of glass and allow egress from the the vehicle. Special conditions require special qualities.

    • @juandalahoe
      @juandalahoe ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jefflittle8913 Really? You've never seen a broken side-window from a car before? The way it's tempered causes it to break into little cubes. Yeah, the edges of those cubes are sharp but because they are cubes instead of shards, it's, comparatively very hard to cut yourself with. If you're ever in a car that has been broken into, you might still find some of these little glass cubes under or in the seat cushions. Windshields are different tho. They have to be because people are ejected through them in accidents more often than the side windows. Yes, windshields are laminated and hold together the way you mentioned. However, the laminating polymer had to be changed shortly after they started using it in windshields because it was decapitating people. I would encourage you to do a little research into the development of modern auto glass. You can find a lot of it here on youtube and it's actually pretty interesting.

It's a known material, and the processes for various stages and use-case preparations have been in place for some time. It's a thing, through and through. The only improvements would be in the machinery involved in the production, sourcing the elements for the aluminum oxynitride, etc, which is how just about every other material out there works.

    Looking at how the cybertruck is build, half its price will be the ALON sheets at like 20k per square meter.
    There is confusion with the terms I feel. ALON is a ceramic, just like Al2O3 (alumina) is a ceramic. It does have the metal aluminium at its base but the chemical bonds are totally different (covalent rather than metallic). Nobody would call alumina transparent aluminium or zirconium dioxide transparent zirconium, or silicate glas transparent silicon.
    You can create amorphous (i.e. glas) metals but they will not be transparent as they still have metallic bonds (i.e free electrons) just without the crystalline structure on a large scale. On the tiniest scale like the nearest neighbouring atoms might possess some resemblance of a proper crystal structure but some atoms farther away that is completely lost. Pure metals can in fact never be produced as glas, some alloys can be cooled so quick that they don't crystallize but only in small pieces and very thin. There are some rather complicated alloys that would crystallize in very complex structures that take time to build, so they can be produced into thicker amorphous metals. They usually consist of very expensive metals though.

    I mean, sure, it would be stronger forever, basically impenetrable, but to me, as a consumer, it would depend on how much more it would make the vehicle cost. If it only added a few thousand, I guess I might consider it, but if I guess it would cost an additional $20,000 or more, I don't think it is necessary here on earth. So, I would opt for the original glass in the prototype model at the reveal. I still put my order in then and still want the truck.

    Car glass is supposed to shatter and not withstand great imapct.
    Do you want to burn alive with all your battery cells, because the guy stopping at your car wreck is not able to break the glass and pull you out?
    Or at least have a good grip on the stuck door?
    Do you want to spread your brains and skull fragments on the inside of your windshield because it's "cool" ?
    I don't think so.

      @yingnyang2889 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yawn. Just how many collisions have you gone to where people burned alive? I was a law enforcement traffic investigator and in 15 yrs as traffic, I had 1, yrs just one car catch on fire and two people died.
      They were driving a 1930 Ford model A, where the gas tank is at the bottom of the front windshield.
      Just our station handled (we had 29) had about 3500-4000 collisions a yr. Multiply that by 15 yrs and that’s 52-60,000 collisions with 1 fatality. In an almost 90 yr old car. They crashed into a tree.
      Also, there’s ~ 400 car fires in the US every day. Electric cars are about 1/50th that. If you gonna state something, at least be accurate and NOT EMOTIONAL.
      You can’t debate emotions. Just facts.

    • @yingnyang2889
      @yingnyang2889 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im also an ex aerospace engineer….and I can tell you the reason DOT wants the glass to shatter, is because they don’t want large sections of glass going into the passenger compartment. That’s why there’s a thin layer of plastic between layers of glass in your car, keeping the glass from coming apart.

      That’s why tesla went to a structural battery…just like we’ve had structural fuel tanks in aero planes for almost 75 yrs. They made the gas tank in the shape of a wing, serving two purposes with one design.

    It was pretty naive to think the glass would withstand a steel ball impacting it without damage. The glass was clearly a laminate of glass and acrylate, the usual combination for bullet proofing windows. This does stop bullets but not without the damage seen in the Tesla demonstration.

    You should do a little more research before writing your script. Transparent Aluminum(Aluminium oxynitride aka AlON) is a Ceramic. It was a thing long before Star Trek made people aware of it. Developed in a joint effort by Japan, the US, and France in the early 1970's. They wanted it for Military applications. I first learned of it before the Movie came out. We used it in Recon camera pods in the USAF back in the 80's. It's used in TV guided rockets as well.
