honestly they did that stuck-in-a-tv effect waaay better than most movies and TV shows have done it. they actually had a piece of glass he was banging instead of just trying to fake it and smacking the air. i think they even recorded the audio from the other side of the glass because the banging sounds were superb.

The conclusion is pretty solid, a couple years ago we had a client at the place I used to work at who wanted us to redesign his storefront to integrate two transparent screens to be the glass on the front displays. The image was not as sharp and it required some trickery to look decent but they did in fact made anything inside the display look 10x more expensive and exclusive.

Layer of TV there to show the customer their entire bill, but still face to face with the cashier, then potentially even build NFC payments right into a corner of the monitor. Could be an all in one retail machine, which is crazy cool.

I see a lot more potential for this technology (transparent display) being used in things like smart glasses compared to TV, if the cost of this transparent display is a lot higher than traditional displays. If something like a smart window is desired, a traditional display and a 4K camera on the other side of the wall will do the job.
I proposed a type smart glass, being one whole curved panel, much like those curved displays. The display is divided up in sections for different resolution and functionality. The central small section where the eyes are staring at accounts for maybe 20% the total area have 70% of the pixel count, using for complexed AR functions, while the outer regions have a lower resolution, and only provides a very basic UI, like time, heart rate, location and speed…

Yeah, see-through displays are great for movies and games, though, since it means you can have the screen's content and the actor's face in the same shot. Not to mention all the dramatic 360s you can pull off while keeping everything visible. That's undoubtedly why they show up so much.
But it's particularly funny in the new Star Treks, where they don't merely have transparent screens floating in the air, but all interactions are done entirely through gestures and transparent virtual control surfaces. So you can't see the screen and instruments correctly, AND you get no tactile feedback. And they're using these things to fly their ships! Looks great onscreen, but it would be a nightmare to actually use.

Besides being used as a snazzy display commercially or a super expensive display piece, I could see this being used in some kind of business or teaching setting, where you could have people sat either side of the desk and still be able to see each other through the screen. Maybe for for presenting ideas to a client or something, or as a visual aid whilst still being able to be sort of face-to-face with them. On the other hand, with VR/AR coming along as it is, if you have that kind of money to spend and that's what you're going for, that kind of does that better in a lot of cases.
Not super useful, but probably pretty neat in a few very specific scenarios.

Transparent screens are one of those amazing sci-fi ideas you see in so many movies and TV shows that make no practical sense in real life.

  • @JimTomatore
    @JimTomatore ปีที่แล้ว

I think the best use case for this technology (transparent screen) is in heads up displays. Both small sized (think sunglasses) and large glass sections (think vehicle windows/windshield). Basically anything where you want or need to see through the glass but want to superimpose additional information without using cameras and computers to capture the images then process them in near real time. In these scenarios a 1080, or even less, resolution would be more than sufficient.
Or for the rich folk, they can get entire windows in their house/condo/apartment made out of these screens, add in a darkening rear layer while watching full resolution content and you have a great window/HUD/stealth TV combination.

*THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LCD AND OLED SCREENS*
LCD aka. Liquid crystal screens work using one huge light source in the back and using a liquid crystal layer to bend the light into a red green or blue color which is sent through another layer (I think it’s called the rgb filter). The problem is it’s these is thet the huge light source in the back makes it impossible for a true black. There will always be light in each pixel
    *OLED SCREENS*
But OLED screens use molecule scale reactions on each pixel to produce a current with three different reactors for the rgb values which can then be sent through an rgb filter. Which essentially makes each pixel its own screen. Which means if a pixel receives a code from a microprocessor to produce pure black it can just turn off. Producing no light!
    *OLED PIXEL EMOJI MODEL:*
    🪨= Metallic layer
🧽= “Hole” layer for eased passthrough
⚛️= reaction where light is produced

Depends on the size of the display and its native resolution, as well as the number of stuck/dead pixels. On a large 1080p display, a single one is going to be easily noticeable, however, on a small 4k display, like a laptop, even a few of them would be acceptable if you don't go looking for them.

I see the greatest utility in integrating this technology into uses such as:
Virtual reality: Integrate this into glasses with high speed communications and the computing power of smart phones to create an even more sophisticated virtual reality experience (i.e. overlay the virtual on top of the real world in real time).
Instant information: Integrate into a pair of glasses to create what Google Glass was originally supposed to be.
Piloting/driving aids: Create a heads-up display of speed, altitude, GPS routing, etc. You never again need to take your eyes off the road / approaching runway / sky in order to see critical / useful information. Also, place warnings on the windshield in front of you -- never again miss that little "low fuel" warning light!
Aid to vision: Darken a small section to dim / block the bright sun, oncoming headlights, etc.
Military: Integrate this into helmets and vehicle windows for soldiers to aid in identifying friendly vs. enemy forces, integrate with weapon sights, provide 2-way video communications even in the middle of a firefight, etc. - all without the soldier ever needing to take his eyes off the battlefield.
Aid to night vision: Tint windows red to filter incoming light at night to preserve night vision.
Politicians: integrate into a pair of glasses and never again need a teleprompter.
Double-sided screen viewing: Viewing images / videos from both sides would let twice as many people view the same picture / video, etc. - as long as these are not directionally (horizontally) sensitive (like reading text, which would appear backwards on the reverse side).
House windows: Change your view! Is it s dreary, rainy day? Change it to look sunny! Do you live in a neighborhood that Russia recently bombed? Change your view to fields of flowers! Need instant curtains? No problem.
Emergency notification: Use building or vehicle windows to display something eye-catching during a 9-1-1 call, so responders can quickly identify where to go.
Transparent phones: Apparently, Samsung¹ has been working on releasing a transparent phone for some time now. It seems to me mostly like a gimmick, but would create the potential for a few useful features, like letting you touch the *back* of the screen to select icons, resize and move things, etc. (That way, your fingers don't block your view.)
Piloting training aid: Entirely white-out aircraft cabin windows to simulate fog / clouds for IFR training. Alternatively, only white out the training pilot’s side, while keeping the instructor’s windows clear, to provide any necessary visibility.
Privacy / security concerns: Assuming the image is visible from both sides, obviously this creates potential privacy / security concerns. You would need to be able to control whether or not people can view the image from the reverse side - which could be easily and very inexpensively managed by simply attaching an opaque backing when privacy is desired.
    ___________
¹ Surely, Samsung isn’t the only company working on this.

Clear screens can be used in the future for something more useful, like glasses menus or cars. But if you go straight for it it becomes harder to justify this on your tax write off, it is better to just create new and new projects as you get better at it so you can renew the period you're allowed to invest on it without paying taxes.
