My gq came with near new 2 inch lift with tough dogs when I got it, way too harsh in the valving, couldn’t wait to get those F’ing things changed out, my budget was limited so tried outback armour, not bad especially for the price, rides better than previous. Had those for 18 months with no problems. Outback armour recently released an adjustable version with a larger bore than mine for the patrols for $$880 set/4. Well worth a close look at. But I’m booked for this Monday morning for a set of OME BP51 to be fitted. Im hoping they’ll give me the ride I’m looking for over rough corrugated roads. Time will tell. (I might have a set of good 2nd hand shocks for sale at the right price if you’re keen! 😉) ......will let you know how the new OME’s go.....
Used remote res for two and a half years biggest problem was the hose going from the shock to the res being the nature of 4wding the rocking, bouncing, and vibrations didn’t do so well. the res hose on mine blew from rubbing another blew at the connection point of the hose going to the shock another one was the seal to the res started leaking. Replaced everything twice which cost me a fortune ended up going back to mono tube shocks. First set where Drivetech remote res then l went to superior engineering remote res the adjustability of them and how they preformed over corrugations and general dirt roads was good to be able to adjust softness to what environment l was driving in.
Don’t know if you have made it but NADs video would be great! I’ve just had my ZD30 inlet manifold professionally cleaned and the car runs beautifully. Was very clogged up. You should have a go at it Alex.
I don't remember requesting this video!!! Ahh ! I see the number plates say Western Australia, never heard of it. We must have another state further over. I must investigate this, i thought we only had 6 states and territories. Jimmy.
I'm running the Rancho 9000s on my Nissan Xterra, I've had them just under a year and they are a huge upgrade over the KYBs that were in the truck. I had to remove the rear sway bar to get them to fit but so far I haven't noticed anything negative. also running Falken Wildpeak AT3w. very good AT tire. Any idea what your truck weighs fully loaded?
Yeah quite impressive the Falkens! Good bang for buck. I wouldn't have a clue what it weighs loaded yet...I'll certainly be loading it up and weighing it to get an idea for the next suspension install.
Ive always been an EFS man and when I got my 2015 gu I thought I’d try something different so I got a complete 3” tough dog adjustable kit and all I can say is I should of stuck to EFS.. One shock gave out 2000klms into having it and 2 of the adjustment knobs fell off. Stay away from them!! Can’t wait to see what you end up with though
In 2013 i changed to EFS 2 Shocks failed and my steering dampener fell off but the bolt stayed on my rack.. they were really good with warranty changed it right away.. the just said sorry bad batch lol (still have them now all good)
Yea I have heard of there shocks failing just like any other mob I guess but the one thing that everyone says is that there warranty process is always really good!
Yeah the old 2.8 she was a beauty. A woman happened and it had to go 🙁 absolutely agree the sound of a straight 6 turbo diesel is musical! 4 cylinder diesels just don't do it for me in that regard! I think that if the 3.0 doesn't blow up I'd say it's the better motor, a bit more power, more driveable, better economy etc...but over 6 years in the old patrol I did come to respect that mighty little 2.8!
Yeah I've only just started using the memory maps system for that trip and so far pretty happy! I might try and get my workflow with it down a bit better before I have a talk about it. It is a 10 inch tablet but the screen format is less "square" than your usual 10 inch. I'd choose an 8 inch if I was doing it again. Too hard to mount the 10 inch
Thanks mate, you did say it was a 10" in the video It just looks identical to my Samsung Note 8, i use for in vehicle mapping. For a Free Mapping Solution, try OsmAnd :) It can be as easy or complex as you wish to make it Probably the most detailed of the free maps
Nice GU fella. My ZD 30 went at 301thou:D. I had an anti grenade kit on it as well! But my mate sold his at 430thou no worries and it towed a horse float all its life...........Go figure huh.
Hey mate,I recently changed my suspension & I’m really happy about it.not a fan of remote res but I would say set of dobbinsons Colis & koni shocks way to go 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey mate i have same problem 98 2.8 and has raw shocks and king springs 2 inch lift and ride is harsh did you have same prob.and did you get a better ride .cheers
I also drive a 2001 patrol. At the moment @ 210.000km without any mods done to the zd30 and she's ticking along nicely. Only needed tot replace the MAF sensor. No patern at all with these things! Then again every car has it's problems, toyota's sold over here have good engines but the diffs end up getting wrecked randomly :P
@Intents - Hi Alex. I'd be interested in knowing what diff ratio you are running - in one of your other videos, you capture some footage where your gauges are showing 100kph at 2200rpm whereas I'm pulling 2550rpm for the same speed. Our tires are slightly different - I'm running the standard 265/70x16, whereas you are running 265/75x16 giving you about a 3.4% drop in rpm for the same speed. My compliance plate tells me that I have the HG43 diffs fitted, so a 4.375:1 ratio. I would have thought your Patrol would have been running the same, but that looks not to be the case. Can you advise. Thanks, Stephen
@@Alex.G Ah, I didn't know you could get an auto behind the ZD30 in a GU1, GU2 or GU3 - I thought they were all manual only. That likely explains it. I'll have a look at the auto ratios and compare them to the manual ratios to work out what to change my diffs to - on top of all the NADS, I've had my ECU remapped so I'm getting a good 50% more torque and about 25% more power than standard, so my current ratios are too short for what I'm doing. I suspect 4.1's with 285/75x16, may be the way to go but 3.9's with 275/75x16 may also work. Do you know whether your ECU has been remapped, or is your GU chipped? Stephen
Great video, I've been wanting to see a good detail vid on your truck. As for shocks, remote reservoir shocks are great but probably unneeded. I run bilstiens on my jeep, not sure if you can get them in Australia though.
Batteries is *series* doubles the voltage, batteries in *parallel* doubles the capacity (if equally rated batteries), sweet looking Patrol Alex 👍 Oh and a video about the 3.0 diesel engine mods would be appreciated 😎
I feel your pain with the suspension. I have kings springs in my 2000 GU. Front is upgraded to take the steel bull bar and winch, rear is preloaded for 500kg plus. Sites level when towing the van, but empty it feels like it has steel rods for suspension, feel all the small bumps etc on the road. Really need to look at a more suitable setup.
Has your winch got steel cable or dyneema rope fitted? That seems to be the main issue when going for spring sets generally labelled as suited to "steel bullbar, dual battery & winch" I went for that setup originally but changed the fronts for a slightly lighter set as even when fully loaded (I fit my roof top tent as far forward as it can be) it doesn't drop anywhere near as much as the rear. If I stand on the bull bar, it drops considerably so I'm guessing it's in the sweet spot & if I had steel cable in the winch it would definitely drop. If you're running dyneema you could try slightly lighter front springs & you may be surprised how different it feels.
Can't work out how to install needle valve and Dawes valve to my gu patrol, would be great if you could make a good video explain how to install it, as there are none out.
Sorry for replying to something so old but it's pretty simple with diagrams and info but basically connect to vacuum and fresh air with a needle valve to the Dawes another line to the turbo and adjust. 15-minute job at most.
Better on both counts for sure! But not by a great deal. The power is adequate, and a lot easier being an automatic. I think stock figures were about 120kw for this engine vs 99kw for the RD28. Fully loaded like this it consumed 12.5 litres/hundred on the highway at 100km/h . That blew out to around 16.5 litres/hundred in mixed speed high and low range 4wd.
I'm more interested in how the power to weight ratio goes in the soft sand. I'm 4WD lacking at the moment and planning my new fishing/ camping rig. I was thinking Patrol with 4.2TD but they are on the shelf in between the hens teeth and rocking horse shit. As pointed out the 3ltr has a bad reputation but are readily available at a reasonable price which gives me more cash for upgrading (suspension, batteries, draws etc). A lot of your vids show beach driving between Perth and Lancalin, same area I will predominantly use mine.
from the extensive research ive done you cant beat their flexy coils and the MRR systems are brilliant in performance and the price compared to other systems , full kit for $1300 , a few buddys have just changed from fox gas shocks to dobo MRR and they cant shut up about how good they are, so ive chosen them to be my next investment, its the setup i will have. very soon
Intents Offroad fair enough mate, editing is so time consuming. Anyways look forward to it, really enjoy your trips mate. By the way I third the request for the clip about the mapping software. I’m looking at options at the moment as well.
I went through a few options hey, spent a lot of time researching and more money than I'd have liked to purchasing options that weren't quite right for me
This was the only time I ever carried a second spare actually, I usually don't bother and just have the spare on the door which I've never needed to use. But, given we were on a trip to the most remote national park in WA, I figured I probably should be extra prepared. And there were four of us on that adventure, enough to carefully wrestle it down.
@@Alex.G Thanks so much for the detailed reply! I saw your vehicle at adelaide show but didn't have a chance to chat. Keep on doing it! It's a great channel!
Yeah it wasn't easy to take the plunge especially because my patrol is a series 2 and these are series 3 lights I had to buy brand new, then the very next day stick em in the oven to open them up 😂
i have a 2003 zd30 patrol with a 4 inch tough dog lift kit on it i upgraded the shocks to the 9 stage adjustable shock from tough dog and there great put it 6/9 for daily driving and 1/9 for 4wding and its great did have old man emu and they where crap lasted 20,000km if my budget stretched for it I would go fox shocks
Thanks for the input Brayden. Might have a bit of a look into the tough dogs hey. Can you get an in cab adjuster? That would be handy. I reckon the fox might be a bit out of my budget too.
Intents Offroad unfortunately the adjusters on the shock it’s self. takes usually 30 seconds to just twist the adjusters all the way anticlockwise. And being a big bore shock they don’t get very hot on washed out bumpy roads either
The rig is looking good, not quite the Subaru but you have to make do I guess :) I always worry about carrying liquid up high though due to the change in the centre of gravity.
The Subaru was in a league of it's own! Bloody weapon! Yeah I don't like carrying liquids on the roof rack either, fortunately it's not often I'd have to carry that much fuel with me!
retry tobuy there's no engineer in the whole of Australia who will legitimately approve 35s on a patrol without spending around $15k+ modifying almost everything in the driveline, brakes, steering to cope & even then you could still fail the required tests leaving you with a worthless build. Believe me, I've been trying to work it out & it's not worth it for the average 4 wheeler. Of course, you could run illegal & not insured in the slightest but that really won't help the 4wd community in any way for future negotiations on regulations...
All well & good for 100% off-road use, but if you take out a family car on the highway, totally accidentally, you may find the coroner's court pull out an engineer who can prove beyond any doubt your vehicle's braking performance was affected negatively by your choice of tyre size & you'll be avoiding bending in the shower for a while no matter how much you want to pick your soap back up. It's up to the individual, but if I was a well viewed TH-cam channel, there's no way I'd run 35s on a Patrol, especially not in West Oz where the regulations are pretty black & white on what you can & can't have legally.
Agreed it would look awesome! And go hard offroad. But learning a little more about insurance recently the implications are pretty scary! Also, I'm keeping this one a bit more modest for fuel economy and a bit nicer on the long trips 🙂
I have a 2006 TD42TI coil cab I bought new in August 2007. Just run in with 78 000 on the clock. ( I have a company work ute). EFS 2 inch lift, 3 inch dump pipe and exhaust.
Try the GME range of antenna's The one you have is just a gimmick antenna (1/4 wavelength dressed out and sold as a 3/4 wavelength antenna} with very poor performance. Love your videos , keep em coming.
It's pretty disappointing that they can sell it as the same thing but it's so inferior 😠 yeah good idea I'll give a GME one a go. Thanks for the feedback 🙂
Remote Res shocks are good, but unless your running superflex type arms which need more travel when rock crawling & smashing out thousands of K's on the worst corrugations in the country you probably don't need them. Same for adjustables, for most they're a gimmick & normally get adjusted within the dampening range you get from a standard shock so the extra cost isn't worth it. Best thing to do is have your vehicle weighed on each wheel, not just front to back, in normal day to day mode & then also fully loaded to see what weight range you're dealing with for each wheel & then speak to a suspension specialist who can advise which springs & shocks to get or spend hours googling what to go for. Generally springs have a bigger effect on ride feel so maybe look at those first. As for shocks, the larger internal bore ones hold more oil & have more surface area so stay cooler but any of them will boil if it's not matched to the weight so weighing it properly is actually key to getting it right. I'm currently running Dobinsons 2" 200kg constant springs & Superior Engineering shocks in my GU. Totally empty it sits around 3" lift & is pretty harsh, however fully loaded up it sits nicely at a fraction under 2" & feels far nicer, so there's always a compromise as the springs are designed for the weight I carry so without it they aren't in the sweet spot for a good ride.
That's some solid information there mate thanks! So how about air bags to help deal with that difference between laden and unladen? Would that help get a little closer to "best of both worlds" with comfort and load carrying?
I personally run a dobinson kit at the moment and am happy with them so far. I usually adhere to the K.I.S.S school of thought. the more complicated you make a system, the more possibilities of failure. I am sure air bags and adjustable shocks are good i was tempted to go Ranchos too, but I think a complete 50mm/2" suspension lift kit and bigger profile tyres make better financial sense with an everyday budget in mind. 275's or 285's with pressure adjustment should buffer the ride better.....If i had a airlocker then air bags might be feesable considering you can tap into the same air supply and get 2 jobs out of 1 piece of kit. If i had to get my suspension again however, I would have gone dobinson springs and rancho 9000's shocks as i found out afterwards that the price of ranchos were not that much more compared to the dobinson shocks. But I am sort of okay with considering Dobinsons are Aussie made. I hear lovells are ok too but i am only going off what i read in forums.
Air bags can be a bit problematic as they effectively take the suspension out of the equation & give less deflection under load therefore creating a fulcrum point for any weight behind that point. I've seen cracked chassis on some well kitted out vehicles due to air bag fitment so I'd personally avoid them. Basically, your suspension is designed to sag under load as it will have a sweet spot for optimal performance & also your rear brakes will work correctly as your load sensing valve will open as the weight increases. The trick is balancing the front & rear sag unser full load rather than attempting to eliminate it like most people do. You may need lighter springs in the front as you run an alloy bar to get this correct, but if you find you're looking at really heavy rears, look to get the coil tower brace mod done as the GU's are a bit weak there 👍
Yeah patrols are forever losing bumper lights 😄 the needle and dawes valves are to do with boost control. These engines are notorious for over boosting so some aftermarket mods help with that
I would really like the spare carrier to get the weight off the door especially. But I don't need the extra rear protection cos I don't drive gnarly tracks, and those things add heaps of weight. If I could find a lightweight trimmed down version I'd be stoked
Yeah I looked into it before doing the LED, but decided the conversion looked too tricky for me to tackle. And the $1200 pair I mention are for projecta refit lights completed by the guy who sells the kits.
+Jack Goodman Not too bad hey! Remove the steel clips, whack it in the oven for 40 minutes at 120 degrees and then use a flat head screwdriver to pry the glass away from the plastic. 120 is just hot enough to soften the glue. Theres a write up on intentsoffroad.com if you search headlights

What ya stick ya lights back together after you painted them
The original adhesive. It stayed on the glass and that shit is bloody tough so I just pressed it back together by hand
They haven't leaked
@@Nathan-jt5cs nope, never a drop 🙂
I like the look of them bit don't have the hart two do it t we o mine
I reckon you should get it lifted 3” or 4” and get some 35’s.
retry tobuy there's no engineer in the whole of Australia who will legitimately approve 35s on a patrol without spending around $15k+ modifying almost everything in the driveline, brakes, steering to cope & even then you could still fail the required tests leaving you with a worthless build. Believe me, I've been trying to work it out & it's not worth it for the average 4 wheeler. Of course, you could run illegal & not insured in the slightest but that really won't help the 4wd community in any way for future negotiations on regulations...
GAJ who said anything about getting a engineer to approve anything!?
All well & good for 100% off-road use, but if you take out a family car on the highway, totally accidentally, you may find the coroner's court pull out an engineer who can prove beyond any doubt your vehicle's braking performance was affected negatively by your choice of tyre size & you'll be avoiding bending in the shower for a while no matter how much you want to pick your soap back up.
It's up to the individual, but if I was a well viewed TH-cam channel, there's no way I'd run 35s on a Patrol, especially not in West Oz where the regulations are pretty black & white on what you can & can't have legally.
GAJ fair enough
Agreed it would look awesome! And go hard offroad. But learning a little more about insurance recently the implications are pretty scary! Also, I'm keeping this one a bit more modest for fuel economy and a bit nicer on the long trips 🙂
Hey Mate' just curious to why you got rid of the last pootrol ?. It was kitted out pretty well.
Women my friend...
Oh ok... thanks for the reply.
Haha, no worries buddy. Yeah would have loved to keep it and do an engine swap someday.
As soon as the grenade goes boom put a Ford barra turbo in this one !!!😃
I have a 2006 TD42TI coil cab I bought new in August 2007. Just run in with 78 000 on the clock. ( I have a company work ute). EFS 2 inch lift, 3 inch dump pipe and exhaust.
Jesus, under 100,000km. That would be worth around 50-60 grand?
Try the GME range of antenna's
The one you have is just a gimmick antenna (1/4 wavelength dressed out and sold as a 3/4 wavelength antenna} with very poor performance.
Love your videos , keep em coming.
It's pretty disappointing that they can sell it as the same thing but it's so inferior 😠 yeah good idea I'll give a GME one a go. Thanks for the feedback 🙂
did you buy the patrol with these mods or have it modded or do it yaself?
It came with the bullbar, suspension, anti grenade mods, a 2nd battery and that was about it. Everything else I've added myself
@@Alex.G cool that it came with some mods. nice work doing the 3rd n 4th battery n electrical stuff yaself.
You may need lighter springs in the front as you run an alloy bar to get this correct, but if you find you're looking at really heavy rears, look to get the coil tower brace mod done as the GU's are a bit weak there 👍
whats a needle valve and doors? lol bumper light falling out that's funny
Yeah patrols are forever losing bumper lights 😄 the needle and dawes valves are to do with boost control. These engines are notorious for over boosting so some aftermarket mods help with that
@@Alex.G why ??? sound like they're rev heads are you going to get dual spare tire carrier bumper on the rear??
I would really like the spare carrier to get the weight off the door especially. But I don't need the extra rear protection cos I don't drive gnarly tracks, and those things add heaps of weight. If I could find a lightweight trimmed down version I'd be stoked
You might consider doing projector retrofit
Yeah I looked into it before doing the LED, but decided the conversion looked too tricky for me to tackle. And the $1200 pair I mention are for projecta refit lights completed by the guy who sells the kits.
How'd you go getting the glass off I was thinking of doing projector retrofits down the track but the glass through a spanner in the works
Intents Offroad cheers I'll check it out 👌
Is very very good
whats ya fuel economy like?
Bout 13.5 per hundred on the highway, up to 16 per hundred in low range, fully loaded for that trip.
do a vid on how to make the zd30 not explode
SLOODLE egt and boost gauge, dawse needle valve to stop over boosting keep ya mass air flow sensor clean.. 👌
Dose anyone know were I can get a 3L turbo diesel for a gu 2000 patrol?
Try www.allfourx4.com.au
heaps on gum tree mate
