Caution must be taken that the wild cattle do not eat so much grass that the grasslands become overgrazed and then turn into a desert. Peter Liu, who helped green up the Loess Plateau, said cattle should be kept enclosed in a pen and fed there, so that every little green plant emerging will not be eaten, eventually leading to a desert.

The whole thing was narrated and edited by western journalist. He said in German is different than translation in in English. It is a bit dramatic when said "OMG, it ran over the animal". If the truck ran over the wild yak, it would have die right there. The truck is heavier than the wild animal. It seemed the truck moved forward to back off the wild yak. The wild yak was a little bit dizzy after the charge. US and other nations run the same breeding program as China does.

Great film until they decided to cruelly drive over a beautiful wild animal and kill it for just living in it's natural habitat. If they are so worried about their domestic herd then move them to a different area. That was so uncivilized they could have killed it less painfully by just shooting it. I thought the expedition was to find a wild herd for future breeding to domestic animals. If it wasn't for that expedition, the local herdsman wouldn't have had the means to kill that bull. Spoiled the entire film and brought disgrace to those local people. China!

I've eaten yak on different occasions, and it is really good meat. It must have something to do with how the yak has adapted to high altitude. Easily the best jerky I've ever eaten was yak. Not the packaged stuff you can buy in the stores, but whole smoked and dried tenderloins sold by Tibetans alongside the road. Superior to any other jerky in my book. I'm also ery fond of yak butter tea.
Speaking of butchering, the narrator has butchered the names of every city in Gansu and Qinghai that he names. You'd think he'd get it right for a film project like this.

Interesting doc. Imagine you're in no man's land with nomads as guides. Nomads only source of income has been captured/protected by a monster. They need to kill the monster. Are you going to argue with nomads in no man's land? I'm sure the bull died. They ate the meat and were able to utilize their herd again. This is something city people don't understand. Will you give your life for that wild bull to live? While I didn't like that it happened as they are trying to save the wild genetics, they also learned some wild traits aren't good. They tend to make the domestic herd wild...like a feral cat. That was most likely an inferior bull anyway. He couldn't win the harem from the stronger one so he took over a partial domestic herd. Such is nature. The Rangers understand this or they wouldn't have shown that part in the documentary!

Nature is not a wild animal being crushed by a machine. They prolonged his suffering when they could've just shot him, it's sadistic. Keeping their distance would've also been less of risk to themselves. Humans are so often inhumane.

When they leave, that Yak will be shot or killed by ranchers. And if the rangers injure only ONE to show they care about ranchers, MANY more wild males will live and if you look at the population of wild yaks over 10 years the population has exploded for the given endangered animal.
