    Aww, Ando! This is one of your best videos! People need to learn to FALL. I taught my students AND instructors how to fall. My students and I did an intermission entertainment thingy for a Muscle Contest thingy and one of the moves in my choreography was a full frontal fall, catching oneself within the last 2 inches. People were blown away how easy that was when you have a basic understanding of movement. We all fell flat and then did this inchworm thingy, grins! Michael Jackson's...can't remember but we're all dressed as dudes even the dudes in our 'group'...with dry ice and smokey ambience...
    Falling and rolling, dissipating the energy once you get to the ground...I had 70 year old women falling and rolling (as well as doing one pull up and 10 full push ups!).
    The only time I've been hurt by a fall was when I was bucked off straight up and had no trajectory to dissipate the energy nor time to 'choose' where I want to fall. (Well there were a few times I fell hanging by my knees on the monkey bars) Ugh. Anyway, this one time being bucked off at a stand still, I broke 3 ribs and collapsed a lung...15 or so miles from civilization. Oh so much fun.
    The one reason that happened is because I stopped being alert, I WAS ON THE CELL PHONE trying to get an appointment with my farrier!! My fault, I didn't see the lead rope attached to my other horse I was ponying get under Cowboy's tail, the horse I was riding, who is very very athletic and jumps UP 6 feet THEN bucks you off, landing on my back! On a big rock. I got back on but I couldn't YELL at my horses nor cuss! The podunk emergency room in the podunk town was even scarier.
    Every student in my classes learned to fall and breathe correctly. They also HAD to have the proper shoes for lateral movement, NO RUNNING shoes! Ando, your movements are almost perfect. I have never seen such grace and control and perfect balance except for major dancers.
    Shoulder muscles are second for being a very bad design in our human bodies, the first horribly designed part of the human body is the knee! Your knees shouldn't be bothering you with what I am seeing in your movements. Are they? How about your neck? Hips? Call me Dr. Stormy! Grins!!
    The tiny muscles of our shoulder girdle just don't have a chance to keep up with all the work we do building the big muscles such as pectorals, deltoids, triceps, middle trapezius and Spinaea erectus the antagonists of our tiny rotator cuff muscles. Teres major and minor, Rhomboids...I've torn my suprascapularis full thickness tear, a major abductor and all of the shoulder doctors have all said they will never be able to fix. I'll not be able to lift my left arm more than 45 degrees from my body. My L arm muscles have atrophied noticably. Sigh. Full thickness tears of these smaller muscles can be a huge problem if you do not fix them. They sort of wind up, snap back elastically, under other muscles and bone and are hard to grab and pull back to reattach them...like the vacuum cord?
    The fresher the tear the better chance of reattaching. My doctor was blown away when I finally mumbled my shoulder hurt and he took an MRI and next visit? He told me he'd never seen a more horribly mutilated shoulder on a 40 year old, ever. I guess I was able to muddle through major physical labor with mangled rotator cuff muscles because the other muscles knew how to 'take over'...I've had two cortisone shots in the shoulder and if they offer you that please take it! Only twice, but wow. You are ON for days. Feels so so so goood. But you can only have two. Be careful when you don't feel any pain. Pain is what makes you slow down and take better care of torn muscles. huggs.

    Question/clarification:
    When it comes to your basic break-fall, you hold your neck and tuck the chin. What steps or cues would you give your students in order to prevent them from accidentally compressing their cervical vertebra and causing a neck injury?
    Thanks Ando! Keep up the great work.

    Sensei Ando,
    Just watched another one of your videos: On The Ground. Found it inspiring, very practical, and basic. Enjoyed it. Please provide us with more videos.
    A suggestion: please make a basic self defense video for 65 and over seniors. With practical strategies and movement instructions due to their limited strength, flexibility and other physical limitations. This age group is often overlooked in many self defense videos and instructions. The seniors are very venerable and OFTEN preyed upon by bad guys. Hope you will seriously consider it. Everytime it seems on the news media of another mugging or robbery committed against the seniors!

    Very effective intro to grounded self-defense, especially for your predominantly Western audience. But you did forget to tell them not to bite their own tongues -- chin down, touch roof of mouth with tongue, exhale on impact. This is one of those fine motor skills that must be trained and conditioned through massive repetitions before it becomes an autonomic response. Pretty darned valuable!

    Another fantastic video Sensei Ando! I have a question re. breakfalls: is there a way to do a breakfall that doesn't involve bending the knees into a squat position (other than THUD-OUCH)? I'm an old lady with crunchy knees and bending them while weight-bearing is super painful!

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t have any magic for bad knees, I’m afraid. But that just makes protecting your head all the more important! The higher your fall, the more momentum you’ll have hitting the ground. So if you can’t get low, at least curl up as much as you can everywhere else! Unless you can cartwheel! 😁

    • @paulw4259
      @paulw4259 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Qaanat. I am obviously not Ando but I would like to reply to you. Falling as you describe, a traditional breakfall, is probably essential if you're going to practise throwing techniques. It's the way to protect yourself in training. It's how I teach my students to fall in the dojo. In the dojo, they might be thrown ten or fifteen times in ten minutes.
      Outside the dojo it could be the worst way to fall. You need to roll, protect yourself and keep moving. The next absolute priority is to get back on your feet.
      Sensei Ando, I hope it was okay for me to answer. I hope you'll correct anything you disagree with.

    • @Shinobi1Kenobi
      @Shinobi1Kenobi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulw4259 Correct. In the dojo where we train throws and takedowns, we must first teach safe falling as the result of throws and takedowns because it is almost ALL partner drills (basics) and sparring (advanced). Most throws/takedowns are designed to slam the opponent into the ground violently, not tuck them in bed with a kiss on the forehead. Partner drills are teaching tactics, building reflexes/balance/timing; but they are a small slice that in real execution at full speed occur in the blink of an eye to a max of 2 seconds. So the how to get tossed safely (break falling) for the uke (aggressor) is based on SAFETY, not continuity of self-defense (tactics). It is usually in an advanced curriculum where we transition from the dojo break falls to TACTICAL ground-fighting skills - turning the break fall into a roll, scoot, reversal to retake the initiative by re-establishing dominant position. The vast majority of martial artists never get to this stage of training, even in most grappling arts. BJJ and Western style wrestling are the 2 major exceptions because they are ground-fighting sports. A few Jujutsu systems teach beginners to roll/somersault from a throw to regain their feet from the git-go. But there are very, very few striking arts where you will get effective ground-fighting training in the basic curriculum. It is typically approached as an adaptation/variation on stand-up for advanced practitioners...especially outside of Japan. In Japanese jujutsu dojos, new students tend to spend a WHOLE LOT of time sitting, kneeling, crawling, rolling, tumbling around right off the bat. This tends to emphasize the transitions between levels (prone/supine, sitting, kneeling, standing). It retrains people from what Senei Ando talked about in the beginning (the subconscious concept that standing = good and anything else = bad) to make students comfortable and adept in all the various natural human postures and to minimize damage from falls.

      @paulw4259 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Shinobi1Kenobi Hi Ken. I guess I'm not a conventional karate teacher. I only have two serious students (from a town of 200 people: 1% of the population sounds better!). I initially taught them to fall from takedowns on concrete and wooden floors. When we got mats I moved on to proper breakfalls so we could practise a bigger range of throws.
      Of course , most surfaces are easier than a concrete floor so they weren't upset at all by falling after that
      Oh, and I didn't have any injuries teaching them the hard way first.

    • @Shinobi1Kenobi
      @Shinobi1Kenobi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulw4259 I learned on wooden dance studio and gym floors with no mats and transitioned to grass, gravel, sand, etc. But that's pretty rare nowadays due to liability concerns. Injuries due to falls were also very rare in that school. 1% of the population is pretty impressive! When I trained in Japan for 3 years, jujutsu was taught on tatami floors (bamboo mats), which are only a bit more forgiving than hardwood. Kendo and karate were often on wood floors, sometimes on tatami. My last dojo had 3 serious students and some who passed through for a week to a month of specialized stuff. But I have taught bigger classes as an asst instructor for a couple of large dojo owners, was the student leader of a university karate club with about 60 members, and taught 2 university PE classes in karate for beginners as a brown belt. It was when I got to the university with all those black belts from different schools and systems in the karate club that I realized that my break falling, throws, and takedowns training was very rare; most of these 1st through 3rd degree black belts had never been grabbed, swept, or thrown and did not know how to protect themselves from the floor. So I was quickly banned from free sparring with anyone below the rank of 3rd degree black belt and put in charge of teaching "self-defense."

    Most of the stuff is pretty incorrect if you wanna learn how to defend yourself on the ground watch Gracie breakdown, Also to break you fall it is best to tuck your chin and slam your hand on the ground as your falling
