  • Welcome back to the channel!
    Time for a change of pace... and it'd be fair to assume you've never seen anything like this before!
    Built 1JZ from top to bottom with all the fruit. Forged rods, forged pistons, CNC ported head, billet cams, Plazmaman intake, Kinsler mechanical fuel pump... And COMPOUND Borg Warner turbos!
    Yeah. Legit. All to go into a JZX100 Toyota Chaser, backed by a TH400, shooting for 1000rwhp.
    This is a build review of a project taken on before the channel came to life. We'll give you a rundown of how it works, what it takes to do it properly, and why you would even want to run a compound turbocharger system in a petrol application.

      I have actually seen a compound barra floating around the interwebs, haven't managed to find a video of it running under boost yet though. Compounds are a great idea! It's just cost and packaging which are the struggles.

      @@jayknight139 people Don't know how to size the turbos there isn't much being done with petrol engines. You get the normal comments about, well if you just sized the one turbo properly lol. Once a few more people do it may get popular. I wasn't going for all out power I wanted the spool rate of my first turbo with the end power around that of a 4202r for a barra which seems to be 1100ish depending on the motor and support mods so as long as the air supply can flow though the front cover of the smaller turbo and the rear a.r is correct shouldn't have any issues, might get lucky with my first set up might have to tweek it after some dyno time.

      @@darrelwatts6538 I'm wondering if you could go to a diesel shop that would know about compound turbos and ask them to size it for you. If they have a specs of any engine I would imagine they could size compound turbos for it if they truly understand how it works.

    Perfect engine for it. Good response with the smaller turbo but should have a stonking top end when the bigger one comes on. It's easier to understand the boost levels by thinking about the absolute pressure instead of boost. So atmospheric pressure is 1 bar, if the bigger turbo doubles that to 2bar (so now there is 1 bar boost being fed into the smaller turbo) and the smaller turbo doubles that again, you end up with 4bar absolute manifold pressure or 3bar boost. Essentially both turbos would think they are making 1 bar or 14.7psi each but the manifold is seeing 44psi. Try doing that with a single turbo and it would end up with a really lazy boost curve but the compound turbos are hardly working to make that boost and response is essentially the same as running the S360 on its own. Plus you get to hear a turbo spooling noise twice as it comes on boost
    There are a couple of compound 2jzs in the states I saw quite a few years ago where 1 guy explained it really well

    Thanks for the information and subsequent corrections. I would like to use a dual turbo setup (one per bank) on a 5.2L based 383 Stroker (500HP-600HP NA) in a Chevy S-10. Although ideally a dual compound setup would be outstanding if theres enough room in the engine bay. Small turbo blown into the Large turbo continuously (1000HP+). Unless I'm missing something obvious that would prevent this from working correctly.

    • @TorqHub
      @TorqHub  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With those cubic inches a traditional single or twin turbo setup would be awesome!! The juice really isn't worth the squeeze in most circumstances especially when you have cubes on your side!! Good luck with which enter way you go mate!

      @rifleman7313 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TorqHub Yeah you're probably right. If I was really going to turbocharge a 383LS Stroker I would only be doing it if I wanted 1500HP + not really useful on the street much. I just like low-end low rpm grunt similar to diesel engines. I don't exactly know but if I wanted to stay under 1000HP but still roughly double stock power I could probably just compound turbo a 4.8L LS. Thanks for pulling me back from an overpowered street motor.

    • @TorqHub
      @TorqHub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey mate, It's done the same way as any other turbo system really. It's a little more complicated in the way that small adjustments can make large differences to final boost numbers and to tell the truth, when we built this system the main concern was being able to control the boost at somewhat moderate levels to keep the standard 1jz at the time alive. Now that the built motor is done, we can start to lean on this compound turbo kits main attribute and see what kind of power this little 2.5 litre can make. More videos on this coming soon.
