Same, got on here to find something to improve the moods and Derek beat me here by 15 minutes. Knew just what some fellers needed. You're doing God's work sir.
Hello old fellow Minnesotan, I gotta say this channel has given my 13yo son and I a chance to pull a 75 F100 out of his great grandpa’s farm. It sat since ‘91 and we have managed to get it running by moving through the steps he watched in your videos of revivals. Please keep your revivals coming, he has learned a lot mechanically and we both laugh at your narration 👍. Also a feller finds himself reciting a lot of your quotes daily to other fellers I work with 😂
I like the theme of "do what you can afford as long as you keep doing". I own a body shop and feel like I'm telling people they have a terminal illness every time I quote them a resto/custom paint job. But, I always encourage them to try themselves if it's their personal project, as the reward of standing back and saying, "I did that", is far greater than saying "I paid someone to do that".
I think you have single handedly started the trend of guys just enjoying the project they have as they can afford. Rather than let it sit until they can afford a full restoration. Pretty much everyone I know has dragged out whatever projects they have and have been getting them going and doing whatever they can, as they can. I am guessing you might have an idea that you are one of the most influential car guys of the last decade. Congratulations! You sir deserve it.
Yup. Doing a little at a time is a helluva lot better than doing nothing at all. I've seen way too many nice cars put out to pasture, only to be beat to death by the weather over the years. It's a shame.
I didn’t say vice grip was the first……..I said he has been influential in getting people to do the same thing. He is getting legit ads in oreillys commercials. When Derek started getting popular guys started back on their projects. This content has sparked more peoples interest than all of those tv shows did over the years. Chip Foose got nuthin on Derek.
What body work.... hell he didn't sand it. ..half washed it. tape and paint ..being doing paint and body for 30+years and never in my life have I seen a car painted like that OMG. To me that is a waste of clear on a car that's worth that kind of money Car should have been stripped I love the show don't get me wrong but this is the first time I've seen him actually wasted time
@@ronaldwhite6508 agreed, and I understand this was supposed to be a demonstration of a budget fix but for pretty much the same amount of labor and materials it could have gotten a coat of black and looked a whole lot better than clearcoated rust.... from a few feet away of course.
Back in 1988 got my STOCK block GN to run 12.11 @113 with a ton of bolt on parts from KenneBell. It was a terror on Fountain Ave. In Brooklyn, and the most fun I ever had with a car! Eventuaöly ran a 10.33 @132 and made a few quid on the street!
What did you do to run 10's? Were those 10s on stock block as well? Like what did you have to do in order for it to run 10's if you dont mind me asking. Also, when you ran 13's, that was with just bolt ons only? Basically, I'm asking what did you have to do to run 13, and then what did you have to do to run 10? If you have the time to answer. If not, that's ok too. I just love GN cars. I'll never have one, so all I can do is talk about them.

Hello Derek just wanted to let you know it's much appreciated the time and effort that you put into your videos is just incredible! Thanks for making my Friday night..!!! We all really appreciate you doing these videos for our entertainment....and watching you work in the 106° heat just for us as well...😊
Derek, you are a major inspiration for the rest of us. Especially the message at the end. This week we will be putting a 2001 Blazer back on the road. It was last registered 11 years ago and was massively overheated. It is my son's first vehicle, he bought it for $700. 2 years later and a complete engine rebuild, brake rebuild and lots of wiring repairs, it is brought back to life. It may not be a Chevelle or Mustang, but it is a good running vehicle we have sweat equity in and are proud of!
Hey Derek, a quit tip. First off let me say I'm no expert but, when I was at Tech School in the USAF learning to paint Aircraft as an Aircraft Structural Maintenance Apprentice they taught us when we were wiping down to always wipe your cloth in the same direction, because every time you swipe back and forth you leave residue when you change direction. I appreciate everything you do man, just want to help a little.
Put a shut offs on the inside of the shop and turn them off and drain them. I do believe he has a bathroom in the shop that is probably heated so running the line through there would help keep it from freezing. They also make heat tracer tape that would help prevent it from freezing and doesn't cost a lot to run
I always appreciate everything you teach us about cars and car care Derek, nothing like VGG for great information and humor my friend! I always enjoy watching you and your family, y’all are an amazing family my friend!
A guy's opinion is that this is one of my favorite rescues. I have specific highschool memories of a GN. I'd love to see this restored frame up. Sacrilige to see one bit of rust on it. 😝
Great rig! One of the best besides the Monte Carlo SS. The Grand National has some serious power. Love what you do; family, all the revivals etc. much love brother.
If only they made a GN/GNX/T-Type/Turbo-T/Regal in an Aerocoupe version when they made the SS Aero and Gran Prix 2+2 Aero......there is a guy who made one custom and it looks absolutely amazing 😅
LOVE this car!!! Thank you for all you do! Aside from the work on the car, I’m aware how much other work goes into making these channels. It’s awesome your family supports you with this and is often included. Keep up the good work, you are truly appreciated!!
Derek, I just rescued an '86 Porsche 944 Turbo this spring with very similar paint. From the paperwork, the car was last titled in 1994. The clear on the hood had wrinkled and turned to leather, the dark paint on all the fender flares is worn through to the white primer as is the roof. I had considered doing this same process but with production clear and have even wiped a few test areas. Until seeing this finished product I couldn't have considered going all the way through with it. Now I just might, scratch that, I will but more likely in a satin just to smooth it up a teensy bit. Thanks to you and the family for your time in producing some of the most entertaining auto content on the internets. Tony in MD
Glad to be the second viewer I love your videos and always look forward to see the new ones. I’ve learned a lot from just watching you and hope one day I will be able to do a couple rescues myself
What a transformation! Loved the shot of the test drive after the headliner came down. The little strings blowing in the wind reminded me of Ford vs. Ferrari when they taped the yarn to the GT40. Absolutely love the look of the rusty hood clear coated. Another great video.
saw you on demolitionranch and thought you were fun. found this video and i was right you are a very fun person. i love the do it yourself attitude and knowledge you bring to the table. also your appreciation in not just performance vehicles but the beauty in restoring old relics art pieces. i really enjoy it you're a master of the craft.
Wow she cleaned up nice luv the new look of the not so bland now national can't wait for the next video Derek you and your family have a great labor day weekend
A great looking car even if it is a little rough around the edges, just goes to prove you can have a lot of fun on a budget and as long as you like it then never mind what anyone else thinks! Perfect!
Derek, contact your tire machine manufacturer & inquire if you can obtain a set of plastic rim protectors that go on the "teeth' that move in & out that hold the wheels onto the machine; those will prevent any scratching.
Thanks for all the hard work and all the awesome videos. I really like the grand national for sure makes me want to find one.Always look forward to all your videos I’ve learned things from them and it’s always family friendly and my boy like watching y’all to.Y’all keep up the good work God bless
Derek, today I changed myself the catalytic converter of my Peugeot 107, 15 years old car, you are an inspiration for me to learn and keep my car going by my own hands, thanks so much for sharing the passion.
I’ve followed this journey since day 1, and Derek… she looks incredible! Glad you’re bringing her back! Love the effort you’ve put into this o’l girl, the amazing content your provide us, and God bless you and your beautiful family. 🙏🏼 A guy couldn’t be happier!
I recently bought a 49 Plymouth that had sit for a over a decade. I have to admit, when I wired up just the coil and starter and threw some 2 cycle mix down the tap, I hollared out “Bring the Thunder!” I’ve always enjoyed working on old cars and tractors, but you have brought a new gear of fun to the mix. A feller would buy you a cold snack if you were ever in south eastern PA.
Oh the old grand national..probably one of my favorites. My uncle had her little sister the regal t-type. Not as fast as this beast but pretty darn quick herself.
15 inch tires are very hard to find in a 235 thats why most upgrade to 16 inch repo rims to have greater tire selection since just about every vehicle now comes with 16 inch even there base model vehicles.
Perfect, love what you have and like you send enjoy the moment. It’s great to see you bring life back into the automobiles you have rescued. I still miss my old 1975 F100 P.U
A GUY does amazing work so glad to see someone taking the time and effort to give this Grand National the makeover it deserves. Such a cool car from our past can't wait to see more of it. As always great job 👍 Keep it up!
I've been a commercial/residential and occasionally industrial painter for 30 years. We usually attempt to mask off large areas using one continuous piece of tape. As well as paper or plastic whenever possible. And if the tape rips occasionally make sure it's running the same direction. Sothat once you start pulling it'll all come off in one piece. Especially if it's up high. Because once you get it going you can pull from the floor. I get IMMENSE satisfaction from unmasking! It's relaxing. Oddly enough I enjoy the masking as well. And even the tedious caulking involved in prep work. Thank you for your content and renewing my interest in an old hobby. I'm too poor to have a project now. But it won't be long before I can afford it. Thanks again Derrick
Another Fun Adventure ! The GN was an excellent car ! I'd like to get one someday ??? Sometimes ? at the Jefferson, WI Car show / swap show and Iola, WI you find GN parts. Or a parts car.
Love the approach. Clean it up make it mechanically sound and enjoy it! How many “restoration projects “ are wasting away in a garage. Had a 70 Camaro SS survivor that was very similar to this. I just drove it as much as I could to enjoy the sound of the vintage Hooker headers. It smelled didn’t look nice and pretty but it was a blast to drive!
I think my favorite part was when the pressure washer kept walking out of frame. 😂

I recommend installing a hot hose bib outside the shop. Can use a mixing valve to control the heat
Of the shop isn't heated how do you keep it from freezing ?
Put a shut offs on the inside of the shop and turn them off and drain them. I do believe he has a bathroom in the shop that is probably heated so running the line through there would help keep it from freezing. They also make heat tracer tape that would help prevent it from freezing and doesn't cost a lot to run
no insulation in his shop, not heated. @@purdy1990
Of all the vehicles you own, this is the one to go all in on. Love the Buick Grand National.
Can someone tell me what you call those straw hats?
I always appreciate everything you teach us about cars and car care Derek, nothing like VGG for great information and humor my friend! I always enjoy watching you and your family, y’all are an amazing family my friend!
A guy's opinion is that this is one of my favorite rescues. I have specific highschool memories of a GN. I'd love to see this restored frame up. Sacrilige to see one bit of rust on it. 😝
I am so pleased you decided to preserve and clearcoat the patina! Real character right there.
Here we go! Hope you had good some good time off Derek!
That wandering pressure washer really cracked me up. Like it was trying to get off camera to avoid the embarrassment. Nice content, Derek

I love your self-propelled power washer!! Its got a mind of its own!!! TY NJ
Glad to have ya back Derek!
LOVE this car!!! Thank you for all you do! Aside from the work on the car, I’m aware how much other work goes into making these channels. It’s awesome your family supports you with this and is often included. Keep up the good work, you are truly appreciated!!
America’s most entertaining TH-cam channel!

This is so nice 🎉 hopefully someone will enjoy it as much as you do! Greetings from the rainy island 🏴
Love all the videos. But I really am impressed with the improved looks without a full paint job. Nice work.
I love watching these shows, especially some of the older ones and ya see the progression and how much little guy Bentley has grown
This is so cool - I’m sure eventually you’ll give it the full restoration- this one’s a keeper
When has he ever done anything like that?
@@warbuzzard7167 ummmmmm
Always loved the grand national, love the appreciation and care you have for it too. Another awesome video Derek and Family
Derek does it again with the long form content. One huge amount of energy used in such a rewarding way. VGG never disappoints.
I really love the restoration videos. The cars look so good and unique afterwards!
Thank you Mr. Derek for the years of entertainment!
I love the excitement when you fed her the onions lol. I hope to see you at Bristol!!!
Perfect timing. Been a heck of a week. Need me some VGG
I’ve followed this journey since day 1, and Derek… she looks incredible! Glad you’re bringing her back!
Love the effort you’ve put into this o’l girl, the amazing content your provide us, and God bless you and your beautiful family. 🙏🏼
A guy couldn’t be happier!
This is by far my favorite build of yours sir! These cars are gems, she’ll be taken care of for sure!
Everything he does is legit!!!! 😅
I recently bought a 49 Plymouth that had sit for a over a decade. I have to admit, when I wired up just the coil and starter and threw some 2 cycle mix down the tap, I hollared out “Bring the Thunder!”
I’ve always enjoyed working on old cars and tractors, but you have brought a new gear of fun to the mix.
A feller would buy you a cold snack if you were ever in south eastern PA.
Oh the old grand national..probably one of my favorites. My uncle had her little sister the regal t-type. Not as fast as this beast but pretty darn quick herself.
DONT CHANGE THE WHEELS!
I agree 1000%. The original wheels are what makes this car.
Why did I gasp “oh my god” like a little girl when I saw this?
Nice. That came out a lot better than I expected. The deep rust looks amazing clear coated.
I’d love to see Derek do a full restoration on the GNX.
Great video, yes I put a wix in my truck
Love the Michigan Bicentennial license VGG plate on the front bumper! You don't see much of those around up here anymore.
So glad to see the projects getting projecteded on! And a video i could watch in one sitting lol
Derek! A great hour of my favorite revival show! Enjoyed as usual!😚👍👍👍
Another Fun Adventure ! The GN was an excellent car ! I'd like to get one someday ???
Sometimes ? at the Jefferson, WI Car show / swap show and Iola, WI you find GN parts. Or a parts car.
Looking good bro!!!!! Like freddy said you truly are a national treasure sir!!!!
My brother told me about your channel a couple of weeks ago. Now I am hooked! Thank you for another great episode.
