Such a sad irony for Eloise. The person she tried to help so badly, the person she empathized strongly with wants to mercilessly kill her now. Awesome movie
@@HauntFreak13Not at all lol. There wasn’t even any subtlety. Ellie straight up agreed that they deserved it after the apparitions begged her to kill Sandie.
The first part is sung by Anya. The second, more dramatic part changes with the voice of the original singer, Cilla Black. This song is a book end, it's used in Ellie's first vision of sixties London. It's the complete original in that scene.
Agreed. This scene reminded me a lot of the climax of "Perfect Blue," which I'm sure was a huge inspiration for this film. I have to say that I was not expecting Sandy to be so violent and tough despite being super old by that point. When she punched Ellie before this I actually gasped in the theater.
The stairs transform into the Cafe de Paris stairway while Eloise is hallucinating, as a nod to how Eli walked down these stairs during her first visit to the 60s... only now she's escaping back up them before she's trapped in a mirror world thats slowly splintering apart. (aka the walls of Ms Collins' apartment)
Sandy is also wearing the same dress as the singer from cafe de Paris. The same singer who also sung this song at the beginning when eloise first finds the 60s
The hands of the Johns grabbing Ellie and then pinning her to the bed was the most horrifying part of this movie for me personally. Just knowing about how they'd sexually assaulted Sandy prior to her taking their revenge on them made my skin crawl while watching this scene.
For me that scene in bedroom was kinda confusing... At first it seems like they were harming her than someone comes from the walls & gives her the phone & says "KILL HER".. Like were they hurting Ellie or helping her?. Still felt for Sandy & her gritty vengeance
@@gregorbaby4269 The way they grabbed Eloise reflects on how they are selfish and desperate like how Ms Collins describes them in the reveal; they man handled Sandie for their own creepy gain and man handle Eloise so they can force her to free them.
They are like a double-edged sword in that they're intentions aren't really to hurt Elle but instead ask for her help, even though they torment her so much she basically loses her mind. The twist in the movie was great with the watcher thinking the ghosts are all evil and out to get Elle but in reality Sandie was the one who was the murderer and the gentlemen are looking for revenge and a way to stop their pain in the afterlife.
@@tom-ch5ii Yeah they were like someone who's drowning who only manages to pull other people down with them trying to get out of the water. Also even in death those creeps probably couldn't resist copping a feel

This movie was one of those few original movies that was a true cinematic experience in theaters this is what true cinema is all about Edgar Wright just gets better with each movie he does
The transformation of the lyrics into a murder song is haunting. "You're every breath I take" as a line to dehumanize a victim-- Sandie is saying "I'm going to snuff out your life" and "all the lives I've ended are the same to me" with a lyric that was originally written to discuss devoted love. Brilliant reframing. And they could have easily rewritten the song to be scary and make her sing "you're every life I take", but they didn't need to and if they did, it would have been so much less effective.
I guess part of the contrast between Ellie and Sandy is in how the time periods allowed them to pursue their dreams. Sandy had to rely on shady men for connections and had to make compromises. Ellie got into university, got a chance to go to London, a safe(ish) place to live, and an opportunity to succeed. If Sandy had been able to go to school for the performing arts or done anything like that none of this would have happened.
Yeah me too. Although I thought it was odd that Ellie asked John to come and look for her if she's not back in 15 minutes. I suppose that doesn't make a lot of sense if you think she's just some old lady.
@@micca903 I personally thought that she said that to him in case at the moment she were picking her stuff out, she got caught on the visions about Sandy she was having
@@susanstorm7910 well no she did it after Eloise lied about being alone and her boyfriend came to investigate which ruined her plan to kill her peacefully and make it look like a suicide.

Not only is this a perfect final role for her I imagine this scene is so artistically done. I love the switches between Anya and Diana. The music. The lighting. The hallucinations. A+!!!
The last time I felt heavily disturbed by a movie was the chasing scene of Perfect Blue. This is on almost on par with that. Also, the use of that classic Cilla Black song made it more horrifying
I saw this movie in theaters, first time I’d been back since Covid. Thought maybe there was something a little bit off with the sound. Until the first dream sequence…and suddenly I was back in a REAL F*CKING movie theater. The sound design becomes much more immersive as soon as Ellie turns under the bedsheets and you fly into Sandy’s world. Brilliant and amazing!
Honestly, Alexandra Collins, would’ve had a better chance in show business if the owner was actually at his place that night when she first encounter Jack and Maybe everything for her would’ve gone differently
Just as a matter of interest, when she got upstairs and was trying to reach the phone, who was she going to phone? The police about the murders? The fire brigade about the fires? Or somebody else about the ghouls in her room?
Remember Ms. Colins told her in the beginning it only dialed out to emergency services, so Ellie knew she would be able to call for some type of help regardless.
I think it's a shame Terence Stamp's character didn't get to find out the truth - I don't think it spelt out whether the crash hit him or not so Eloise could have said something
Potentially unpopular opinion, and this is no dig at the late Diana Rigg whi did an amazing job in the film. That said, I kind of wish she'd have played it a bit more unraveled and delusional rather than just kind of suddenly turned-on-a-dime cold blooded killer. Like the more Ellie started looking like her and listening to her songs maybe that starts triggering Mrs. Collins and throughout the film we see her getting more nostalgic and erratic. I get that the twist is discovering she's alive, but I think the final act would have worked better had she been someone driven insane by the hand life dealt her rather than the kind of vigilante anti-hero thing we got.
The ending sucked. Sandy took way too long to go up the stairs and the stabbing motion looked robotic. Why would all the dead guys try to stop her from using the phone, pin her on the bed, only to hand her the phone? Makes no sense. I wanted to like this movie. This scene is masterfully done... the music, Anya slowly creeping up the steps, the transformation of the staircase, just perfect.
That staircase scene fooled me completely; once it lit up I was SURE that was her "stairway to Heaven" and that she would die like all the others.
Such a sad irony for Eloise. The person she tried to help so badly, the person she empathized strongly with wants to mercilessly kill her now.
Awesome movie
Sandie realises she's became a monster herself and tries to kill herself with the knife but Eloise stops her.
That’s what I hated about this twist. And the fact that all the scumbags were treated as victims.
She felt that she was going to report her to the police

This film has a lot to say about how blind it is to idolize the past when it was so more restrictive and suffocating to so many people.
