+AndreiTupolev That's it Andrei but what they're putting down is worn out stuff. They'd be ripping it up for good if there wasn't a 'protection' order on the line. The NTA (National Transport Authority) require IÉ to maintain the line for a few years to come yet (10 years from suspension of services I think which was 2010).
+HSTHoward They're replacing what were good sections of track with some pretty worn out stuff. Basically they see welded track as wasted on this branch which is looking less and less likely to ever see traffic again.
Superb video, but very sad. The closure of the South Wexford line was an act of criminal negligence. With at least 3 trains per day in each direction, at times when people wanted to use them and extended through to/from Limerick or Cork like in the old days, this line could have almost paid its way......and just think of the huge potential freight traffic to/from Rosslare Port - all of which goes by road, and to hell with the environment! I suppose the big spanner in the works is the magnificent Barrow Bridge - the longest in Ireland - the maintenance and staffing of which must cost IÉ a small fortune. Hopefully either the IRRS or RPSI will be able to run a railtour over the line before it is finally lifted.
Very sad indeed. Unfortunately it was inevitable with the scant regard IÉ had for the line. Scheduling seemed purposely designed to drive people away! Trains never waited for late running ferries (and vice versa) and never connected properly with Dublin services at Waterford. They've now stopped running the weedsprayer over the route as well so sadly looks like the lifting train will be the last movement :( To think that there's been some rumours abounding about Foynes Port at the opposite end of the line in Limerick and a possible restarting of railfreight it seems even more criminal to let it go...
The NTA still requires the line to be kept maintained. Although closed to passenger traffic it is still seen as an engineers siding for stock transfers if required.
