Michelle Phillips is the only one still living, she is the thin blonde, also she is the mother of Chynna Phillips who was go on to great fame in the group Wilson Phillips, with Beach Boys member Brian Wilson's daughters. Michelle has had a big acting career following the group, including starring on night time soap Knots Landing for many years. Cass Elliott was amazing talent who passed much too early in life and yes, watching her and John Denver sing Leaving on a Jet Plane is well worth the time. Denny Doherty sang lead in this one. The sort of creative driving influence in the group was John Phillips the taller guy who was married to Michelle, but John has a bit of a cloudy history with regards to some of the things he did, but Chynna is his daughter with Michelle and his daughters Mackenzie who was a star on the One Day at a Time sitcom and Bijou Phillips are also very well known celebrities. The group broke up after only a few years, the Phillips got divorced, and sweet Mama Cass died of a heart attack at age 32.
Yup, you've got the whole history of the group. Such sad, tragic story behind the scenes. The early death of the amazingly talented Mama Cass (the heavy-set woman), John Phillips' drug addiction problems along with that of his actress/daughter MacKenzie. Chynna - the daughter Phillips had with Michelle (the other woman in the group) seemed to have escaped the worst of John's behavior/abuse mostly unscathed and went on to have a successful music career as part of a trio with "The Beach Boys" Brian Wilson's two daughters. They billed themselves as Wilson Phillips. Big hit with "Hold On".
Chynna is also married to a Baldwin brother - i think Billy. She now has a TH-cam channel and walks around the streets by her house. The dog and cat just follow her. Really cute - I've never seen a cat do it. Watch the girls sing good vibrations. You'll really hear their talent on that one!
Michelle Phillips, who was a native Californian, went to New York in November with her husband John Phillips. On seeing New York in November, she said "All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray." Taking this as inspiration, John then wrote the song.
Love the '60's and especially the mamas and the papas. It was a great time, I remember it as a kid. I always wanted to be a hippy but I was too young. America seemed such a great place, fun and free! We need the hippy ideology now❤
They had such s beautiful sound. Cass Elliot was The Voice. There are songs that feature her. Amazing. Their music brings me back to my childhood. I'm 63 Much love from Maine and keep doin what ya do ❤
The Mamas and the Papas got their name from an interview with the Hells Angels, who said, "we call our women mamas". In the interview, Cass Elliot, a member of the band, shouted, "well, we got mamas in our group as we got papas". John Phillips used the name for their first single, "California Dreamin'".
California Dreamin' was written in 1963 by then husband and wife, and future members of the Mamas & the Papas, John and Michelle Phillips. Interesting thing is, this song was originally recorded by Barry McQuire, with backing vocals by the Mamas & The Papas. His version is present on his second album "This Precious Time." Now if you've heard Barry McQuire's massive mid-60s hit "Eve of Destruction" (which is very good, btw), you'll probably understand why his lead vocals on California Dreamin' were re-recorded for single release by Denny Doherty of the Mamas & the Papas. People say that if you listen closely, you can still hear a snippet of McGuire's original vocal at the beginning of the track. 😀
Song is about the longing for the warmth of Los Angeles during a cold New York winter day. The song was written in 1963 by John and Michelle Phillips, the husband and wife songwriting team of the Mamas and the Papas, while they were living in New York City during a particularly cold winter. Michelle was missing sunny California, and John began writing the song after being inspired by her homesickness. **went in the the church got down on his knees and pretended to pay** to get warm. The preacher liked it cold / because people came into the church
John Phillips [tall guy] wrote it when he and then wife Michelle [blonde gal and perhaps the most beautiful woman EVER] were in NYC in winter and thinking about how much they missed California. This is maybe one of the most recognized songs from the 60's.
The story I heard was that the group was stuck in NYC in late fall with hardy any money. They wandered around New York and when they needed to get warm, they went in the church. I think Michelle as into the architecture but John, who went to a Catholic school, wanted nothing to do with it. They wrote the song at night and called their agent in California. He loved it and sent them plane tickets back to LA.
The young blonde was married to the tall guy with the blue shirt. Mama Cass, the other lady was in love with the shorter guy but Michelle slept with him and it hurt Cass terribly. (Free love, gotta love the 60s). Cass Elliott died at 32 of a heart attack, not choking on a ham sandwich which was the rumor for years. The tall guy is also the father of Mackenzie Phillips but that is an entire freaky story into itself. He is also the father of Chyna Phillips of the group Wilson Philips a girl group from the 80s. Chyna was in the group with the daughter of Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys.
This is one of those feel good songs. Its a simple song, easy to remember and one of those tunes that stays with you. This group was a big deal for the times, but unfortunately didn't last very long.. Cass Elliot went on to have a solo career that was cut short when she had a heart attack and died. Michelle Phillips ( the blonde) did some acting after the group split.
Their song "Creeque Alley" tells about how they got started as a group. A bunch of artist friends kept forming bands, switching members, forming new bands, but eventually all became well known bands (the Byrds, Lovin Spoonful, Barry McGuire, and the Mamas and Papas.) Its comical how the bands kept switching members until they all "got it right."😄 So you might like their "Creeque Alley."
One of the most beautiful, gorgeous and harmonic songs ever written and performed. If you don't like this song then you're not truly alive. If it fails to cheer you up then you need to seek therapy immediately. It just doesn't get any better. Both simple and complex, the harmony and interplay between them is unreal. The perfect synthesis between folk and rock. You should react to some of their other hits, like Monday, Monday, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Creeque Alley, Go Where You Wanna Go and Twelve Thirty. All just as gorgeous.
This song was especially personal for all the soldiers in Vietnam thinking of home. Some songs were perfect for their time, and some are perfect for all time.
***HOLD ON*** Their kids had a band, too! "Hold On" was a popular 80s song by Wilson Phillips an American pop vocal group formed in Los Angeles in 1989. The group consists of sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas.
Chyna has a TH-cam channel with Billy Baldwin called California Preachin if anybody is interested. She has the other girls, Wendy and Carnie, on once in awhile.
John Philips (guitar) & Michelle are the parents of Chyna Phillips who was one of the singers in a 90s group called Wilson Phillips the other 2 girls in the group are the daughters of Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys.

I love Cass Elliot's voice. There is a little known album by Cass Elliot and Dave Mason. I read once that Dave Mason felt that his music with Cass Elliot was some of the best music he ever made. I originally found the vinyl abum in a $1.99 bin.
Oakland is hundreds of miles from L.A., but yeah, the West coast is different. ;) And contrary to popular myth, Mama Cass did not die from choking on a ham sandwich - she had a heart attack, but there was a sandwich on the bed-side table and you know how it goes from there.
This song was at the root of one of my most vivid "nightmares" from my freshman year of college many moons ago. I grew up in L.A. and unexpectedly found myself in Nashville, TN (long story; it was my father's alma mater). I was homesick from DAY ONE, the summer humidity had me thinking I needed a SCUBA tank, and then the end of the first semester was unusually cold for the area. One day, after stomping around my dorm room to get the feeling back in my frozen feet, I turned on the TV. The little icon in the corner said it was 2 degrees. 2 DEGREES! I then turned on the radio - and THIS song came on. I just sat on my little twin bed and cried lol.
Momma Cass Eliot was the woman in the audiance amazed by Janis Joplin singing Ball and Chain. One superstar in awe of an unknown singer who changed music with her voice and style
You should react to Creeque Alley. It's the story of how they got together and their journey. Not many react to that one, it's always California Dreaming.
John Phillips, the guitar player on here, wrote this song. He married the skinny blond woman. The lead singer on this song, Denny Doherty, later played the character of the Harbormaster on the kids tv show Theodore Tugboat. John Phillips also wrote almost all of this groups hit songs. He also wrote KOKOMO, the last song to hit #1 for the Beach Boys in the 80s
Michelle Phillips, the skinny woman, and John Phillips, the tall guy playing the guitar were married. Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty were not. The band was formed in New York and Michelle was the only one actually from California. John was from South Carolina, Cass was from Maryland and Denny was Canadian. John was the father of Mackenzie Phillips who played on the 70s sitcom One Day At A Time, and he and Michelle were the parents of Chynna Phillips who sang in the 90s trio Wilson Phillips. John, Cass and Denny have all passed away, with Michelle being the only survivor. They have a number of bangers, but you should also check out some of Cass' solo atuff. She was an awesome singer, and the duet with John Denver, Leaving On A Jet Plane, is fire
Michelle Phillips was an act4ess later in life. Her daughter is MacKenzie Phillips who played Julie, Barbaras sister (Valerie Bertin) on One Day At A Time. Valerie Bertanelli had a son with Eddie Van Halen nammed Wolfgang Van Halen whos also a musician like his dad, look him up. Her and Eddie were married from 1981 - 2007.
My parents, specially my dad absolutely loved this group, and I have the best memories growing up of my parents blasting the song in the house and all of us would sing it & be instantly in a great mood. They have an amazing catalogue that you should dive in to some time.
They wrote this. I first heard it when I was a young, melancholy, sad teenager visiting family in the south and missing my home in California. Song means a lot to me! 🤔🙄😰💙💙🤷😎🍹👵🐺🌵💋
Yeah, this was always one of my favorites of theirs. Michelle was married to John Phillips. Chynna Phillips, who was a member of Wilson Phillips in the '90s, is their daughter. The "Wilson" in that band name was from Brian Wilson's two daughters, Carnie and Wendy. Brian was a member of the Beach Boys, who were HUGE in the 1960s. I don't think you've reacted to any of their music yet; they were known for the pop songs that introduced southern California's surfing and hot-rodding culture to the rest of America. Lots of songs that appealed to teenagers about girls, cars, and surfing. Very listenable and feel-good music! A few to check out by them include "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Surfin' USA", "California Girls", "Help Me, Rhonda", and there are dozens more. The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" album, which was released in 1966, was considered revolutionary for its day, for several reasons. It was a "concept album" in that it was not just a collection of songs, but had a theme running through it all. While the Beatles often get credit for producing the first concept album in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", the Beach Boys actually pioneered that with "Pet Sounds." Their music was another part of my childhood's soundtrack. You should definitely react to something by them!
“Mama Cass” Cass Elliot had a few song of her own one was called Dream a little dream of me and she did a song with John Denver called Leaving on a jet plane
They were one of the first male/female groups in the biz, hence The Mamas & The Papas. 🙂 Cass Eliot was at the center of the Laurel Canyon music scene of the late 60's to late 70's. SO many rock legends came out of the neighborhood. SO many. You should look that up sometime, you will be amazed. Thanks for sharing this one!
@@The-Malibu-Wolf It was a rather cruel (I believe NYC) cop, who told a reporter at the scene that she choked on a ham sandwich. The press took him seriously.
The expression "Mamas and Papas" was very much 1960's slang. Michelle, (slim blonde) and John (taller guy) Phillips were married. There were rumors that Denny Doherty, the lead singer for this song, had a crush on Michelle, and Mama Cass (NOT Casey!) Elliot had a crush on Denny. Mama Cass went on to have her own career. She had an amazing voice. She was gone too soon.
This is the group that did the song originally. The guy playing the guitar is John Philips and he wrote the song. Two of the members were married, John Philips and the blond woman, Michelle Philips.
McKenzie Phillips was the daughter of John (guitar player) and Michelle Phillips (the skinny blond singer) who starred in the eighties sitcom One Day At a Time.
Back in the sixties my dad was the head jailer at our town jail. He came home one night and said that he had 'the Mamas and Papas' in jail. The were known for using drugs and I think that's why they were arrested. They are back from the 'Hippie' era.
The drama in this band is something for soap operas. There is such a story to this bands short lived career but man did they make some freaking great music. The harmonies are incredible.
LA has great winters but summer lasts about 7 months long and the 3 months of actual summer is triple digits all the way through! The best part of California is where I'm from, the Central California Coast. Here we get spring for 6 months and autumn for the other 6. Lol
❤Michelle Phillips was an actress on one of the tv shows, Dallas, or Dynasty etc, not sure. Also, her daughter was a member of the band Wilson Phillips. I believe another member of WP is the daughter of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.
My FAVE group od the 60's - Loved them & still do - Mama Cass left us way too soon!! Their song Creque Alley actually documents the evolution of folk/rock/easy MOR music into what became "The California Sound" it tracks all the great guys that Cass actually sang with BEFORE Mama's & Papa's - John Phillips wrote that song!!
I believe the song was written by John Phillips ,the guitarist who was married to Michelle Phillips , the blonde. I read that this song was voted a few years back as one of the best songs of the last 50 years. Interestingly it was not their biggest hit which was ' Monday Monday".
I just subbed to your channel. I've been watching for the passed week and I enjoy you and your choice of music to review. CONGRATULATIONS on your baby girl Brightly.

Never get tired of this song
Mama Cass was treated disgustingly by the music industry because of her weight. It’s awful what they did to her.
She has a fantastic voice!
And even after she passed of a heart attack, the very nasty rumor that some fools still believe of what happened. She was really beautiful to me.
@@The-Malibu-Wolf It was a rather cruel (I believe NYC) cop, who told a reporter at the scene that she choked on a ham sandwich. The press took him seriously.
And they did it to her daughter too
She choked on a ham sandwich =(...
Congratulations to both you and your wife with the birth of your new baby ❤ wishing them both the heath and happiness ❤️
MAMA Cass had the voice! Love her in all of their songs. I'm Utah native but moved to Colorado in 1970. Love both states!
She was gone too soon.
yes, they wrote it. It was Michelle that was in NYC and said.. All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray
Some of the greatest harmonizing you w ever hear
The drama in this band is something for soap operas. There is such a story to this bands short lived career but man did they make some freaking great music. The harmonies are incredible.
Cass Elliot also was the "big bird" on HR Puffin Stuff. Loved that show.
Hi, the way Denny sings “GOT DOWN ON MY KNEES “, Epic♥️
The music I grew up to, in the 60’s and 70’s are so timeless.
#hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and Tommy Shaw (Styx) have a side band called Shaw Blades and they do a great cover of this
Power! Groovy! Peace & Love...60's were great & 70's my years yes!
LA has great winters but summer lasts about 7 months long and the 3 months of actual summer is triple digits all the way through! The best part of California is where I'm from, the Central California Coast. Here we get spring for 6 months and autumn for the other 6. Lol
McKenzie Philips, from the sitcom, One Day at a Time, was the daughter of one of the couples in the band
Not live, but the studio recording. That's how most TV shows were done back then. That show was "The Hollywood Palace," which was a big variety show.
I believe the song was written by John Phillips ,the guitarist who was married to Michelle Phillips , the blonde.
I read that this song was voted a few years back as one of the best songs of the last 50 years.
Interestingly it was not their biggest hit which was ' Monday Monday".
Sooo thankful I’m a Baby Boomer and got to hear all this fabulous music from real artists with real talent in real time.
straight from the sound track of my youth! I got to see them perform live in the Hollywood Bowl
I love their music & singing!!
Michelle was also an actress, she was on knots landing for about 6 years
I just subbed to your channel. I've been watching for the passed week and I enjoy you and your choice of music to review. CONGRATULATIONS on your baby girl Brightly.
Random Ron Burgundy jazz flute solo! 😂 Seriously though, I grew up in L.A. listening to KRTH 101. I love this song.
Back at the time this song came out all of us in school dreamed of moving to California.
Looked like a paradise to us.
What is that, that is magic! They were two couples and friends! Deep hole here! again, live 1967 no auto tune ETC
Totally unique and beautiful harmony.
The latest joint podcast with Chyna Phillips and Becket Cook, she tells the story of her mom and dad writing the song at 2am in a cold winter NYC apartment

"Is The Group Married Couples?"
In answer to your question, Pegasus.
The only members of The Mamas and Papas who were married were John Phillips (who was playing the guitar in this video) and Michelle Phillips (the slim blonde woman)
This song was written while the group was recording some songs for an upcoming album in New York during winter, and Michelle was feeling homesickness, wanting to be back in California
Black Pegasus, they the, original singers of this song. The was written by John Phillips ( the tall guy) and then wife Michelle ( the blonde) in 1963. Fifty years ago the musical world lost Cass Elliot (the red head). This from TV show called "The Hollywood Palace "
I think I Saw Her Again is their absolute best song, but they really packed a lot into 3 years of recording and John Phillips was a hell of a writer and arranger. 👍👍
Must must watch Mama Cass sing "Dream alittle dream". The woman had an amazing voice.
