Girl, you’re my inspiration. I got so much crap and discouragement from my professor this past semester in graphic design but watching your videos brings me back to life and ready to kick some 🍑
My graphic design bachelor's degree was the biggest waste of time - the moment I got out and got some real life experience really brought to light the bias that professors have. Art is so incredibly subjective. Just keep doing you but don't be afraid to ask for criticism. :)
As I have been a graphic design/visual communications student for the past 5yrs (ive transferred colleges and lost credits so I'm behind a little) I have noticed every professor is different in their opinions and advice. The good professors tell you what you're doing right but also ways you can improve. Bad professors tend to tell you they don't like it but don't give you reasoning or advice on how to fix it. I suggest, if these are the professors you are encountering, to find other professors in the degree program and get their advice as well as advice from other students. Critiques are a very good thing and will help you grow so much as a designer. There's been multiple occasions where I have had the crappy professor who tell me I shouldn't do this but I should do this and I come back the next week with my project looking how I wanted it to and they agree that it looks so much better and don't realize that I completely ignored their suggestion. Sometimes you just have to go with what you feel is right and not what the professor has told you. Sorry I'm rambling on but I love giving people advice since I've been experiencing this for so long so my last comment will be the same as earlier; ask your peers their opinions as well, the more the better because the more opinions you get on your projects the more it will help you realize what is good and what needs to be changed. Good luck and don't give up! There's lots of good professors out there so I hope you have one next semester!
I just graduated in the spring in graphic design and I’ve been struggling to even get an interview let alone a job. I’m losing faith but seeing someone successful in a creative position gives me hope. I love your work and this portfolio video helps me a lot. Thank you!!

@@O-Booooooooy if you really love it, art can still be a hobby. I'm just as passionate about it even though I seriously have no intention whatsoever on making it a major career goal.
My God, that's a gorgeous portfolio. And it highlights exactly where I'm lacking: creativity. I can draw, understand the fundamentals of lighting, composition, shapes, blablabla... and give good representations of existing things like animals, landscapes or furniture, but actually designing stuff in a personal style, or come up with varied character designs, nope. The moment I have to imagine something, I just can't. Maybe because I don't have an idea of what I want to design or my mind is too chaotic to focus on something in particular, or maybe having grown up with so many cartoons and visual influences I feel like half of what I come up with rips someone off, no idea, but it just doesn't work for me for some reason. Any tips to clear my mind or get myself in the right mindset would be helpful if someone has any ideas?
The easiest way for me to get past creative block is taking any idea i and building on it. Just looking at something, like an apple or a window and creating a story around it. Even if you tell yourself that the ideas you have aren't good, they are still something and building off something and revising it is a lot easier than coming up with something from scratch. Just take the first thing you see, and start making the story.
I'm experiencing the same. And i realized that I would be more effective as a teacher rather than a designer. I saw myself mentoring rather than implementing the design. I loved every single page so much! I adore your use of colour and shape. I hope to head into the animation industry so this was particularly great for me to watch. Honestly each page gave me butterflies! I look forward to see all you achieve.
Wow this is amazing! Your personal projects look so intriguing, and the layout of the portfolio is so clean. Very beautiful art thank you so much for sharing, this is really inspirational.

Your videos are so helpful, thanks so much! I was curious to ask you.. given your experience after these years in the field, what would you change about your old portfolio to technically submit it today? :)
I have a question. I did my bachelor in 2D animation in Switzerland, but since a year I couldn't find a job. Is it now too late to get hired because of the huge year gap?
Wow. Just wow. I can’t believe I just found your channel. I mean, my history as an artist is super similar to yours. Oddly enough, my first drawing I truly liked (and still like) is from Zelda. Anyway, I’m halfway through my university years and am currently looking forward to an internship. Also, I’m thinking of opening an instagram account to share the art I’ve done; if I ever do open it, hope you can see my art and tell me what you think. Greetings from Mexico. And Merry Christmas! :)

This is great! I just graduated with a degree in graphic design on the 8th! My Big Senior Art Class™ really put a heavy emphasis on the "physical portfolio". (We barely even talked about digital!) Is it considered standard to use an iPad or other tablet for portfolios nowadays?
Kinzichi thank you!! that’s awesome, congratulations! aha I always HEARD i would need a physical portfolio and I was told to bring one once (for the nick artist program interviews way back when) but then I saw other people interviewing who had ipads!! I was like ....that was an option?! and this was 4 years ago when I interviewed for that, so nowadays all digital just seems standard! when I did an informal interview at disney they just asked for a url for my artwork and I gave them my website and they looked at the portfolio on a computer!
Yeah, I figured. We figured out all of our printing and what to bring/how to present in my portfolio class, but the classes really didn't talk about digital. I'm glad to know that it's appropriate in a professional setting to show my portfolio on my ipad!
I absolutely love your videos! I am currently working on building up my portfolio for when I graduate college next year! so this was very helpful, and gave me some encouragement to seek some new art styles! Thanks a lot!
Most definitely digital. If shes in animation, it wouldnt be traditional because most western studios are moving away from traditional and focusing on digital
Hey! Each of the work is unique. I especially love how you do the environment designs. You're pretty skilled to do that. Congratulations on your new job! From this video of yours I've got some ideas on how to organise my portfolio. Thank you for sharing
I'm a fresh graduate in Electronics Engineering but I've always struggled with it because I never wanted to pursue it let alone a passion. Because of you it made me want to pursue the dream that I've always wanted. i think we all agree that this girl has a really GORGEOUS SMILE. her teeth are killin me
she is super cute
You must have a blast every day at work. I can't imagine how fun it would be to be able to draw these things for work.
I love how David Dobrik-y the title and thumbnail are. Lol
HIGH PRAISE
I loved every single page so much! I adore your use of colour and shape. I hope to head into the animation industry so this was particularly great for me to watch. Honestly each page gave me butterflies! I look forward to see all you achieve.
thank you so much!!
Oh my gosh that's incredible! I could never draw like that 😲
Wow this is amazing! Your personal projects look so intriguing, and the layout of the portfolio is so clean. Very beautiful art thank you so much for sharing, this is really inspirational.
Really interesting to see what's in an artist's portfolio. Love your backgrounds, environments, esp (that first jungle!). I can definitely see how you fit in with both Nickelodeon and Disney. Pistachio & rocky road. :)
Hey Laura! I just wanna say that you are one of the best youtubers in all TH-cam, I love your videos and I want to work in animation to,lm love youuu from Bogotá, Colombia
thank you so much!!
I’m fourteen years old and I really want to be an animator or a character designer. I draw every day to try and get better, and I just wanted to tell you your videos are not only helpful but a huge inspiration. Seeing someone who actually made it is incredible! Thank you ❤️
Is this work you created for assignments in college, or did you come up with the project ideas on your own and do them in your free time post-college? You are very talented and such an inspiration!
You just motivated me to want to focus more on the 2D aspect of animation! I’m currently in my last year of animation, and your channel has inspired me a lot! Love!
Oh God this acctually got me *INSPIRED* !! :D
My biggest dream is to work at Disney or Pixar somedaayyy!!!
And you're my biggest inspiratiooon!!! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Awesome awesome art, Laura..... really love it! So this art is from 8 years ago now (2022).... wooow so long ago now.... Such a long career.
Nice one.... your drawings are very inspiring :)
You applied with character designs for an animation job, is that correct?
Thank you for showing us your portfolio! Now I have an idea of what I need to put in mine when I want to apply somewhere! Your the best are your art is amazing!
Your works are pretty.
It is no wonder you got hired by them.
I can see the years of work and practice in these. Just amazing!
Your videos are so helpful, thanks so much! I was curious to ask you.. given your experience after these years in the field, what would you change about your old portfolio to technically submit it today? :)
You are so gifted , disciplined and inspiring 😍
I have a question. I did my bachelor in 2D animation in Switzerland, but since a year I couldn't find a job. Is it now too late to get hired because of the huge year gap?
If u have a really good portfolio, then no.
Oh my gosh your artwork is AMAAAAAAZIIING!
Wow.
this is so inspiring! i have yet to make myself a portfolio because i don’t know what to make for it. thank u for this video, it’s very informative and helpful!
Was all your art done digitally or on paper? I am new to your channel and new to digital art.
Yay you did a portfolio video! I love your work, your such an inspiration.
Is there anyone like me........WHO CANNOT PICK AN ICE CREAM FLAVOUR!!!???
laura i just found you from your bob ross tutorial because it was in my recommendations and you're officially my favourite youtuber now... i wanted to be an animator for a really long time but that lifestyle was just so competitive and stressful i gave it up. in this short time that i've watched your videos, you already make me want to draw again T ^ T
@@lulusketches That's awesome! My portfolio's kinda chunky so it'll be great to not have to lug it around everywhere haha! And thank you!
When you say "painted" do you mean photoshop painted or literally acrylic painting?
I was wondering this same thing as well
Most definitely digital. If shes in animation, it wouldnt be traditional because most western studios are moving away from traditional and focusing on digital
I loved it!😍 Make a video showing your old work please!
Cookies and Cream, or Peanutbutter cups
two of my favs!
Hey! Each of the work is unique. I especially love how you do the environment designs. You're pretty skilled to do that. Congratulations on your new job! From this video of yours I've got some ideas on how to organise my portfolio. Thank you for sharing
This is so lovely! Even your old work looks great. I would also love to see what you current portfolio would look like if you have one.
This is cool of you to share. It gives me a good idea of what to aim for.
Your work is so amazing!
You’re beyond talented, and such an inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing!
Strawberry! Just found your videos and they're really fun!
I'm a fresh graduate in Electronics Engineering but I've always struggled with it because I never wanted to pursue it let alone a passion. I've always wanted to take a course in the arts field but my parents were against it and now I am losing hope since I failed my licensure exam and dont know if I'll take it again or not but thanks to TH-cam for recommending me this video. Because of you it made me want to pursue the dream that I've always wanted. Its going to be hard at first seeing I have no background in arts except for my crappy drawings in the past (havent drawn since 2014) but if I have the right mindset, I'm sure I'll work my way up. Thank you for the inspiration.
Dope work! I like your story about how you got into animation.
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing.
This is so inspiring and really neat to see. Im approaching my last semester in college, and I'm wanting to work in the industry after school, all more reason to see how I can construct my portfolio. Super helpful :DD
Crazy talent!
i wanted to say thanks a lot for posting all those videos, it's pretty tough getting any input from someone in the animation industry online ^^
That is some absolutely gorgeous artwork!
I looooooove your style from four years ago and they look absolutely professional. Now I know again why I didn’t end up as an artist.
