  • A very warm welcome back to the allotment! In this video, we are going to figure out what we are dealing with underneath all of that couch grass!
    It was raining most of the day, so it was the perfect opportunity to start sowing the very first seeds of the season and I think we're finally getting around to tackling that cage of nettles!!
    All the best, until next time,
    Laura 🪓💪

      Hello Laura, I seem unable to add my comment so I’m piggy backing onto Steve’s comment I’m also getting started with my Chilli growing - I have pineapple and mango I think. Well done on all your hard work and welcome to the world of pain. It has had me off the garden this week. I have yet to edit the video but my work last weekend killed my muscles 😂. Plot is already looking much tidier. It is a pity i cannot drive to ireland and pick up that trailer as I would love to have one for my trecking to and from the allotment and skip hunting

    Wow what a find all those slabs, you could put your shed on those. You don’t need the lights until the seeds have germinated ( save a bit of electric). The slabs were in such good condition too! Heavy but certainly a win 🙌! I even popped two just out side the shed door, it was starting to get very muddy and Roo was skating in the door of the shed with wet paws! Oh excellent, I have them turned off now but I won't bother putting them on until I see green! 🤣🤣 Iron women, that made me laugh so much! I did give it 100% trying to get them up! My neighbour kindly lend me the pick axe, it was intended for the nettle roots on our shared fence but it was a great tool for those slabs! Thank goodness I was able to disguise all the huffing and puffing 🥵🥵

  • @nitelite78
    @nitelite78 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That's great about the concrete being slabs. Amazing how the grass just covered them all. Slabs are super useful to have on a plot. I saw some other people suggested using them as a base for the shed. Other potential options for them are:
    1. As a base for compost bins - I bought some slabs for this - I have a couple of the plastic darlek style compost bins and we had an issue with rats - those plastic bins are open bottomed so it's really easy for rodents to dig underneath if they are on bare ground. I bought some slabs and put the compost bins on top of them - no more rat problem. You should leave a small half cm gap between the slabs so worms can still get up and into the compost.
    2. As a path down the middle of the plot. Some people use concrete slabs for all their paths. They are good obviously because slabs supress weeds really well. You might not have enough though. Having said that I prefer grass or wood chip paths.
    On a side note it's worth joining local community Facebook groups if you have one for your road or area - I'm in one for the estate I live on and there's been loads of times when people do their gardens up and buy too many slabs and give them away for free. Or useful things like pallets or chairs or wheelie bins. I managed to get 2 plastic compost bins for free just because I was in a local gardening Facebook group. I've seen loads of people give stacks of slabs away in our local Facebook group but it was before I got my plot so unfortunately I had to buy some as I wanted the rat isse dealt with fast.
    3. You could even use the slabs to make a raised bed. Dig deep narrow trenches and put the slabs on their ends into the trenches and back fill. Then fill with soil/compost. Would create a quick bed for growing in this year whilst you source other materials for your beds.
    The area where the slabs were will be nice to plant into. It's kind of like the slabs have cleared the growing area of weeds for you. Although I guess the open area where the slabs were might be too central in the plot for your beds?
    On the shed leaking issue - I had this exact same problem last year. Water was pouring in the shed every time it rained. I was initially planning on just re-felting the roof but the roof was in a bad way and warping a lot so in the end I decided to buy a big OSB woodchip board and cover the roof and then put felt on top of that. The wood in the corner of the roof was rotting - it even had an ants nest in it. So it was important to stop the water ingress. I hated thinking about and doing that job. I also had issues with guttering. There was originally only gutting on one side but I realised the shed wasn't level and rain was just falling off onto the side where there was no guttering. So I ended up buying new guttering for two sides. So now I have a dry shed inside and I'm collecting lots of rain water.
    One tip on buying felt - I recommend getting the more expensive plastic backed on. I went with the cheap stuff and it rips like paper. I regret doing that because I think it will probably only last 2 or 3 years (especially with all the storms we seem to have nowadays), whilst the plastic backed premium stuff would have lasted more like 5 years at least. Corrugated onduline or PVC would be even better but that's pretty pricey.
    Great to see things progressing. I need to get out to my plot a bit more.

    • @thetinygarden_
      @thetinygarden_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are so many uses for those slabs they are in great condition, so I am definitely keeping them for a future project!
      I'll need to invest in a ladder 🪜 so I can get to the roof! I think it's going to be a big task, I appreciate the tip on the roof felt I had no idea the standard stuff wasn't so great!
      Maybe when the weather is nicer you could bring flask with a nice hot drink and even just to have a walk about and and enjoy being our doors at the plot! 🤗🌱

      I didn't know that about sweet peas Corrine!! I only got 15 seeds in the packet so I was airing on the side of caution, one pot does have three plants though😅😅
      4 true leaves, I love these little bits of knowledge, I would never have known!! I'll have to figure it out which ones are the true leaves first🤔 I have a stem, two leaves on one side and then more stem and then a little bushy bit at the top with more leaves that aren't opening yet maybe I pinch out when it goes a bit taller?
      The weather has been rubbish, hope it clears up soon my plot is really slippy hence why I wear working boots, not the most glamorous but so practical!! 🥾🙌

    Hey Laura! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Sorry about the rain. I love your plot. It keeps getting better and better with your hard work. It’s good you could escape from the noise at home. Escaping from noise is something I do everyday. Misophonia…a torturous ordeal I’ve dealt with for half a century. Love the sweet peas you chose…sweet Italian. You should check the last time you were inoculated for tetanus because of your rusty chicken wire skin snag. Thanks for sharing and take care my friend, Cindy 🌱💖

Thankfully I am all good on tetanus but it still gave me the heeby jeebys 🫣 take good care Cindy 💖🤗

    Great video Laura, i am glad to see that they are flag stones rather than a full concrete base that you would have to break up. You can reuse the flags on other things. As for your shed roof, instead of roofing felt, just put some black plastic over it ( the type allotment holders cover their beds with in the winter ) I enjoy sowing seeds but the time seems to fly by when doing it. Next time you want to move the trailer, lift the hitch end then either pull or push, you will find it easier to balance and move. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming, loving it Laura

    Also, that hole from rodents, get some rodent mesh/hardware fabric, take that block of wood off and stuff some in the hole to fill it up and then screw that block of wood back on otherwise they'll just dig through the new wood but the mesh will stop them getting up the top end of the hole they made in the ground and prevent them getting to that spot again.

    Ahhh the ol' flagstones the same type that i am growing on top of in my Raised Beds like i mentioned to you last week, at least you got them up.
    I would sort out what type of bed you would be growing in meaning, whether you are - In Ground (Allie&Tricia) Raised Beds like in Decking Board height, Raised Beds as in Scaffold Board height, Raised Beds in Galvanised ones (Diggy) or Raised Beds in Pallet Collar height.
    Once you figure out which way you want to go then you have an idea of how many beds to have and what size, then put some Cardboard down in the places that you want to grow (put a brick on it) as a visual, move around if need be, then once you are happy start making up the furthest away bed/s and work your way back to the shed this way you wont have far to walk or carry stuff when you are knackered. Fill the beds and away you go once those beds are filled you work around them.
    That's how i did my back Garden, flags as well, next job is a 6x6 Greenhouse but i have to sacrifice one Raised Bed to fit it in. Take Care.
