What a great gift!!! It's the gift that keeps on giving. Every time they are outside, they will be reminded of how hard you worked to give them newly mulched garden beds. That is so special. Investing time with your loved ones is the best gift anyone can give.

It's nice to see narrower gardens! Sometimes I think my space is too small, but seeing the narrow gardens was helpful to see how many beautiful mature plants you can fit in. Happy Mother's Day Moms!

I love that you treat Aaron's mom to this! Over the past few years of watching your channel you have inspired me to treat my husband's mom ( who's had to learn to care for his dad with progressive Parkinson’s disease) to several garden projects...including planting over 300 bulbs from Color Blends! She is in the throws of being a full time caregiver after years of being cared for. Now I am able to care for her in a way that brings BOTH of them joy. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

It's always great to do things like this for a great Mothers Day present. My wife and I extended her mother's vegetable garden and completely cleaned up her flower beds. Doing it yourself really gives it a personal touch and expresses how much you appreciate them. It would have been a lot easier if I had a bank of bags, employed help and an endless choice of what to put in. The dream world of TH-cam, sponsors out the ying yang, really shows what you can do if ya got it.

What was the other brand of compost you used in addition to the Land and Sea? We are having a hard time finding vendors who carry Land and Sea in our area

Hi Laura, this year I tried doing the same as you and used compost for my mulch. My soil is terrible, so I was hoping the compost would really help it out. However, I recently learned from my local soil place that unless you keep it consistantly moist, the compost will actually die off if it dries out (i.e. all of the nutrients). I live in a dry climate, so they said even if you put compost down, mulch is necessary to keep the compost living and feeding your soil. I know you live in a dry climate as well, so I'm curious if yours dries out at all? And wondering about your findings/thoughts with this?

It’s always funny to me when people in other places see bermudagrass as a weed. Here in the South, it’s just everybody’s lawn! It’s the only thing that can survive our hot humid summers. Will it try to eat your concrete driveway and invade every flower bed? Yes. But that’s the price we pay for grass here.

5 years ago I helped my sister and her husband mulch their foundation plantings. We put down a layer of cardboard before adding the mulch. Even to this day there are very few weeds coming up. Cardboard mulching is wonderful! The only time I’ve had a problem with it was at my own house where I had mare’s tail weed. It punched through the cardboard. Everything else was suppressed. I finally had to use a commercial grade landscape fabric. Live and learn!
I have a problem w crape myrtle runners. We removed the tree, we had an ice storm & half the branches snapped & got a fungus. We had the stump ground but we get runners that won’t go.

Please what is the Weed Mares Tail? Is that like the Goats Head Puncture Weed? I let my neighbors horse over into my property to run, and graze... I've got the dang puncture Weeds from Hell now. I'm afraid I'll never get rid of them. They are so bad, and I'm on a half acre lot.

Hey. I've heard many things, but should you always water the soil first before mulching? especially of you don't have drip irrigation. Does it it make a difference?
This project cleaned the yard up nicely! I do have a question about trimming. When you all trim around the flower beds, since there is no border on some of the mulched areas, what is the best way to keep the grass trimmings out? I have a hard time with this in my yard.

Such a bad idea because of bugs as it's an invitation for them to get into house and increases moisture. I look forward to your videos EVERYDAY!!! Thank you!!

Acts of service - ahh my love language - she must be so excited!!! When it comes to putting compost down for mulch, how thick are you putting it down?
The mulch looks so nice. And, her garden is beautiful. The tree though is too close to the fire hydrant. Most city codes require a 36-inch clearance around the entire circumference.
Obviously, her city must be fine with it because they haven't asked for it be removed in 7-8 years. Also, Laura clearly showed in the video that there is enough clearance and access to the fire hydrant.

Your mother is Susan and Aaron's mother is Sue AND you all lived next door to your family/in-laws. Yes, this is definitely a family who not only loves each other, but likes them too!! I love it!!
The only thing that would make those newly mulched beds even spiffier would be a sharp and deep English edge to all the beds. Edging makes every bed look so much more lush and 'finished'.

What should I get my mom for Mother’s Day? She says she doesn’t want any gifts but complains when she doesn’t get any. Last year I got her a card and a couple things from the dollar store and she ended up returning them.
My son gave me a paper coupon he made himself for one day together in my garden and yard to be my helper for 8 hours.
I would suggest cleaning the house or other tasks that may take up her time. Don't forget to wipe down appliances and get in all the corners.

Living in NE I cannot use mulch as topdressing. If we did the weeds would have a PARTAY! We do use black mulch because I love the contrast with the plants. It tickled me that both Mom's are Sue/Susan. lol

We get enough rain here in upstate New York that my mulch has broken down by the end of the season. I think we have gotten 5 inches since Friday night.

I love the look of the dark compost as opposed to chunky mulch, it just looks so clean! But doesn't mulch do a better job at shielding the weeds from being able to germinate? Areas that I've only put down the compost, weeds have rooted right in. What are your thoughts on that?

I love my root slayer shovel. It comes in two sizes. They making digging, especially around roots and established plants, a breeze.
I live on a mountain. That tool has been the perfect digger for me. My planting areas are composed of roots and rocks. All that has to be removed before I can plant with topsoil with added amendments.

What a beautiful garden and such a thoughtful gift! Is the pear tree you showed at the beginning one of the varieties so many communities are now fighting as invasive? Where I live, cities are encouraging their removal as they are choking out natives in creek beds and other areas.

The grass against the south facing fence looks like GRUB WORMS 😲. I would treat the entire lawn immediately. Grub worms eat the roots, not the grass blades.

Such a beautiful clean look after fresh mulch, bark goes in. That is a HUGE yard for a duplex.... heck for a house these days! Love it!
Removing shrubs? Highly, highly recommend the straight-handled Radius Root Slayer shovels! Nomad for smaller shrubs/plants...XL for bigger shrubs. These are my go-tos for digging things out. The XL can also handle ornamental grasses removal (cut out wedges from the root mass until all gone). I'm a 68 y.o. pro gardener and the right tools make all the difference!
