    Quite a lot of comments on waste of time and energy for this video, but people, this is the Make channel, you know, trying out new ideas, testing, making, exploring and learning!

    You could probably skip the sheet step and just add the bags to a bread pan in the oven. A little less work if you need to process a lot of HDPE.

      ***** It is, if you're doing them individually. Which is the thing about Peter's suggestion.
      Also efficiency goes up as quantity does, so the more you recycle at once, more or less the less it costs you to do so (in terms of power/gas/time).

      I have used plastic sheeting for molding masks in the oven. Also sheets cut out of milk bottles. You put the plastic sheets on top of a plaster copy of what you want to mold in the oven, In our case, it was a mask. We did it at 250~F You have to watch it closely so it doesn't melt, just until till it was pliable. Then we pressed it harder into the mold with a wet washcloth. I have molded sulls the same way, made a silicone mold then a plaster copy of a store bought skull, into a skull out of sheets cut out of milk bottles. you need to have a plaster copy and you-you do it the same way put the plaster mold in the oven with the plastic on top and watch for it to melt just a bit. You can also use a heat gun to shape plastic bottles by putting them on the mold and heating them, then pressing them down with a wet cloth. Depending on how durable the sheets could put them in the oven on a pan with parchment paper and pull it out with a wet cloth and slap it immediately onto the mold. But you usually have to bake them twice and press them twice to really get a good shape. Have to watch them close because the plastic starts to melt a bit pretty quickly.

    We end up with a lot of large used clear yard waste bags from collecting grass clippings for our garden from the neighborhood. This might be useful for making plastic windows for our greenhouse. Using an outdoor mud kiln heated with scrap wood and tree branches and or homemade charcoal, it might be a way to make use of a waste material without the indoor fumes or electric usage. .

    I have done this, just for the fun of it. Only a couple of bags at a time. Sometimes I leave the writing on for interest. The material is interesting to the touch. Some papers turn out lacey. The sheets can be used as covers for journals. I do not however bake them. Just a quick run over with iron between brown paper bags. Let cool for a minute by waving the paper and peel off.

    • @Skrappy777
      @Skrappy777 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      DaTwistedOne1 I was basing my statement on the MSDS for HDPE. While HDPE is non-toxic, prolonged heat exposure can cause decomposition of the product which may release aldehydes, hydrocarbons, or other toxic fumes as well as cause respiratory irritation (depending on the product MSDS you read).
      However, this occurs at temperatures of around 250° C ~ 480° F. Although the project says 400° F which is below the given decomposition temperature, I would still recommend doing this project in a well ventilated area.

    For a school project i am supposed to create something to help the environment. since asphalt shingles are terrible for the environment, i was wondering if i could recycle plastic bags like this and make roofing tiles. will it hold up to weather? is it even a good idea? any insight would be appreciated.

    • @RalphV
      @RalphV 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FaZeZombieslayer But plastic is a pollutant and takes an incredible amount of time to decompose. Using it seems as though it'd be the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish

    • @sajakru
      @sajakru 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ralphie Vigg Not necessarily if we focus on recycling plastic into the sheets rather than producing directly for it. Main concern would be warping from heat but once you have those tests down you could compare how long it lasts compared to shingles as well as any run off during rain storms that would come from either one. That long decomposition time on plastic would work in its favor. Imagine being able to set a plastic roof tile system and then never needing to redo it for the entire life of the house. They could even heat treat the tiles once they are down bonding them together to make an air and water tight seal. No leaking and helps insulate better. And in case of repairs they could be cut out and then re heated back into place with minimal loss.

    • @paulpardee
      @paulpardee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +FaZeZombieslayer I know this is kinda late, but you'd have to do something to handle UV degradation of the plastic. Untreated HDPE (and almost all plastic) becomes very brittle and weak when exposed to direct sunlight. Even with the right additives, it won't last much longer than asphalt shingles (10-15 years).
      Other challenges would include ease of installation and weight. They'd also be really slippery unless grit were embedded. None of these challenges are insurmountable, though.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It'll break down in the sun pretty fast (within a year or two). We use asphalt shingles because they're cheap and REALLY GOOD at being roofing.

    The ironing method is only really good for about 4-6 layers, it isn't suitable for dozens of layers as it doesn't have enough heat to penetrate and fuse it. So the oven has to be used for a thicker material.
    I however only needed about 4-6 layers myself, so I am fine with the iron method, I hold it there a little longer and they fully fuse. I first learned about this originally from some American girl on youtube on a really old video like back in 2010 or something, she had made wallets and all sorts of stuff with the fused bag. I see your video here is using the identical method basically, but yours weren't fusing as well as hers, probably because you were trying to do too many layers.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painting will prolong the life of the shingles, but it adds material costs and MASSIVE labour costs, and I doubt paint would hold up well. The end result is also a bunch of tiny bits of plastic everywhere as it gradually decays, which isn't good for anyone.

    • @waltlars3687

    You're using a hell of a lot of energy from the oven to do make a low quality product in very small quantities. Much better to spend the money you would spend on electric on a sheet of plastic and take your bags to a professional recycling tip where they can use it properly and not waste so much of the bag and energy in the process

      Djembe Numuya This, so much this. This is a lot of time, effort and electricity for a very small quantity of low quality plastic sheet. Have large companies mass recycle this stuff for you, they do it way more efficiently than you'll ever be able to do!

      Simple common sense would tell you a) Not only Americans use the Web, I'm English b) the simple principle of economy of scale c) evidence of the product in the video and purchasable recycled plastics d) the tools used in this video and skills of the person who made it compared with a company that recycles stuff for a living all day, all year on machinery designed to do that process. So yes, I can wholeheartedly guarantee that there was lots more energy used in the video than reputable recycling establishments

      Richard O'Brien I think it is fair to ask whether the cost in energy and time of doing this is more or less that of just buying a mass produced sheet at a retailer. But acting like a jackass while doing it undermines your point and makes you look far worse.

      Richard O'Brien How do YOU know it takes less in a developed area that does have a recycling?

      Djembe Numuya , I agree, this is such a waste of 1) time 2) energies 3) resources.

      Thats reusing, not recycling. There is a key word, cycle, what you are doing is making a bike with a wheel that can rotate once before you need a new one.

    I save and use these bags as home insulation. Just crumble them up into balls and put them inside a bag and stuff in between your walls however you like. Water resistant and wont degrade from UV in the dark. Not sure how fire resistant they are but don't care... by the time fire got to the insulation it would be too late anyway.
    Free insulation. If you knew how expensive that pink fiberglass stuff is per roll... then you'll say... hell yeah.... save all my bags

    If the plastic shopping bags are specifically HDPE then it is that they are exactly the same material as those plastic milk jugs and plastic milk bottles. If it says exactly HDPE on one item and that same thing on another different item then it has to be necessarily the same exact material. So that if there exists a productive recycling process for HDPE milk bottles then one could conceivably stuff all shopping bags known for a fact to be HDPE material into such milk bottles for dispatch to the given recycling facility. Yes, you could. If its the same exact classification then it is exactly the same material.
