A large part of what differentiates Messmer's snakes from others in ER is their single wing. The Winged Serpent is sort of his symbol, and I feel like that could have been incorporated to this design quite seemlessly. Great design and art tho, keep up the good work. 👍
Building on this idea, perhaps what could be tweaked instead of adding wings outright is batwing shaped fins (like what the Batmobile has) on the shoulder spikes or serpent horns. That way the theme is present without adding too much to the design.
Really like this! I think the concept of abyssal serpents stewing in Messmer’s body comes across really well with the armor you crafted! Kudos on the name too! It’s cool and smooth to say which suits his demeanor well. Something to explore if you ever revisit the design for fun might be giving it some form of legs. Messmer is very tall and lanky, and while I think armored legs would overwhelm the design, I think something similar to the tall and thin legs of Darkrai or Gardevoir would help give it height wand funnel the viewers’ eyes to the core eye hiding in the armor without being too distracting.
If we were pulling on the lore a bit more for the stats, it would be cool to make it a fire dark type with the justified ability it wouldn't be very useful but it would be cool to have a dark type with that ability
I do like this a fair bit, think I would only tweak maybe 3 things 1. I feel like Fire/Dark fits better, I get it cause of the snakes, but Messmer in lore is BRUTAL, so dark would fit better 2. I would have made the snake heads pointy to represent the spears, like they can shoot out and stab things head on 3. This is the maybe one, if he eye looked more like Messmers, with the 3 points, but I get that THIS fits the snake theme more Either way awesome work
I like it. Looks like it could be a pokemon. Only thing id give it to be more related to mesmer is red hair somewhere. Either a mane on the back of the armour or on the back of the snakes heads. Great design tho
I think this is well done I dont play elden ring but I do like the abstract direction ye went You are also fantastic with pokemon naming its something Im struggling with for my fakemon region
messmer is my favourite character from the entirety of elden ring now, and let me tell you, in my opinion you have captured him perfectly. the pokemon looks REALLY cool but also sort of endearing and pathetic? with the eye. i think its so stinking cute.
man, this design is such a interesting take on the character! i could definitely see this evolving into something based more on messmer's phase 2 (where after removing his eye the snakes grow and become stronger) with perhaps a third snake replacing the central eye, if ever you decide to expand these designs into evolutionary lines
I like how you went the more object route with this one, it’s much more interesting than if you were to draw him more human like (in my opinion). If you ever do bosses from the base game then I would recommend Rykard or Placidusax, they would look pretty interesting as Pokemon.
I love the idea, but my own expectations had me thinking youd make him into mostly just snakes, as his second form is him revealing he technically was a snake man. But I love the armor and everything. I think straying from the original design but still keeping elements of it is such a good thing. I hope to see more SOTE bosses made into designs for pokemon I didn't even think of!
I think this design looks awesome, and while I haven't seen you other bosses as pokemon, I personally think this sort of think works better than just taking the boss and drawing them in a pokemon style. I feel like object mon get way too much hate because alot of people don't look past the surface inspirations. In Japanese culture, there is a whole subsection of spirits that are just objects, and as such, they pull from those ideas often. Pokemon like Klefki are more than just a ring of keys, they have inspirations that can sometimes stretch between many different cultures and beliefs. All that to say I really like this design cause it feels in line with what a pokemon design is supposed to be.
This is super creative and I like it a lot. Only nitpick I would have is from all the guys in armor from the souls games...messmer is the one which is a living suite of armor...the guy which is practically only wrapped in clothing. But like I said, its only a nitpick because I love it so much. Would probably use in a Playthrough. Update: Isn't it funny that these Pokémon snake heads are more aggressive and creepy looking then the red or white snakes in messmers boss fight which are basically just small little boop noodles
initially, i was expecting this to be a three stage evolution when i saw the 1:49, with that as his embers/flame serpents, evolving into the final product, and it getting a unique evo based on his phase 2 when evolving without his iris of grace item equipped (looking largely the same)
The snakes should have had eyes. Also I never really thought of Messmer and the armor as a motif of his. The Snakes and the fire and the impalement took up all of his identity.
I think your current thought process is the way to go. Capture the same ideas without translating it 1-1. I just watched a previous one and it looks more like a megaman x boss than a pokemon. This one looks much more like a pokemon.
My only note is I wish the snake wings were incorporated, only because it's strongly associated with him in his lore. That said, I don't know how you would without pushing it to having too many elements.
I think you could’ve gotten away with doing a Dragon/ Poison cuz dragons across the board naturally have fire related affinities & it would rationalize the armor cuz with Pokémon a lot of times if it’s dragon or fairy type they basically just give the cuz it’s magical or cuz it’s fantastical excuse but a lot of reptiles do naturally have very durable armor like scales & a lot of dragon type. Pokémon have fire affinity but are not fire types.
I’m personally not a fan of this design. But I will fully admit that I’m partial to animal design, and snakes are one of the few animals that don’t really do it for me. That being said I do acknowledge that this was a very creative way to take the character.
You do a wonderful job of subverting my expectations but still retain the essence of the original. Plus I appreciate your willingness to move away from the more popular animal designs of Pokémon and make something a little weirder
I actually like the first concept better. I think the reason why you keep on talking and getting defensive about this design is deep down you know it isn't the best you can do but you want to keep going to kinda prove a point about it.
Missed oppuntunity for the eye to be a iris of grace Messmer has.
@@renewalacumen1770 yeah there’s always a lot to try and capture but that’s a great idea
It should be more like a held item that he consumes, like a berry at half hp

I totally agree with distancing more from the original subject to abstract its features into an unique pokemon.
Beautiful design and art!

That would be cool. I smell another mon in the mix!
This is absolutely great. Together with Romina this is my favourite design of yours.
TYSM! Yeah I started out confused on how to handle the design, but this is quickly becoming one of my favorites as well

Really cool design, should definitely be a Fire/Dark type though. Lit!
The best one so far.

Basilance is a fantastic name! It fits the design and the pokemon nomenclature feel, perfectly.

I love the way you do the 'doubble line' shading on these mon! Would 100% have this one on my team!
Thanks for noticing! I saw similar techniques from official artwork and it helps make it feel a bit more organic I think :)

These can still be boop noodles :) just gotta be a good trainer. I’d love to see a trainer and this mon just having fun

The guy in armor thing made sense. Also first I guess
@@duskdeadman4333 glad you like it! I was on the fence as I knew it would be different than my usual
I really feel like it should've been Fire/Dark type since Messmer's flame has a certain darkness to it plus the serpents are referred to as "abyssal"

I think it would have been cooler if it was like a suit of armor with a bunch of snakes like the barnacle pokemon
