    In this video, I'll go over certain aspects of your snowboard to help you get started. I'll offer some recommendations for binding stance. Then I'll teach you how to strap in and move around with one foot in your binding. After that, I'll walk you through getting on and off the ski lift. Just wanted to say thanks for the incredible video series you've put together here. I was linking heel and toe turns together within 1.5 hours from your instructions alone (and a little bit of trial and error). I am going to recommend this video series to any and all beginners.

    Went up to the mountain and tried snowboarding and loved it. I'll be going again and came across your videos. In my opinion, I believe to be very informative. Just the basics needed to enjoy the sport. Once you know the basics, other things will come. Thanks for the video. Gonna try on my next trip up.

    This series helped me so much! On my first snowboarding trip, no one was really able to teach me how to properly ride so I was just tumbling down the slope. After watching these vids there was a HUGE difference on my second trip! I was even able to give some tips to my sister who was a first timer and she picked it up really quick! Thanks!

    Hey man, 3 years ago I decided to pick up snowboarding and found your series of tutorial videos. From there I watched it over and over again to learn on my own and tried to reproduce the steps in each of your videos. It took a lot of falling and a lot of patience but fast forward 3 years I can now do double blacks without any problem! So thank you!! (and Happy new year!)

    These are great videos. I don't know whether you have boarded in Australia before but my sons took me to the top of Front Valley at Perisher, gave me a few tips & said this is where you learn to snowboard. They may as well have stuck me on top of Everest, I was terrified. It all came out good in the end though but I couldn't get the hang of the heel & toe bit, now I know why. Guess I'll just have to keep going back to Perisher every year until I get it right. I think I can handle that :) :)

    Hey man, I just want to take a minute and thank you for making these videos. I'm a fellow Ontarioite living in Banff and have been trying to teach myself to snowboard this winter. Today was my third time out (went to kicking horse) and it was probably one of the best experiences of my life. Prior to today I knew about leafing and riding an edge (I only rode my back) after much trial/error and necessity to get down the run... Anyways, last night I watched these videos and it pretty much taught me everything I needed to know to jump right into blues and finish my day on a black!
    Are you an instructor? If not you should consider it.. you pretty much taught me how to snowboard in one sitting. Keep your knees over your board, be conscious of your shoulders and the 45 rule (+ back foot rudder principal) ... I practiced c turns for my first run and jumped right into carving for the rest of the day. Those hings let me shred up the hill with my friends who've been doing it for years.
    Thanks bro!

      @fj5snow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome! Wow, this is one of the nicest comments I've ever received. Thank you so much! I do teach privately from time to time but am not a certified instructor. I made these videos keeping in mind what I wish someone told me when I first started. I'm really glad you were able to take what I described in these videos and apply them so quickly and easily to your own riding. That's awesome! I'm jealous you've got Banff as your home base riding grounds, so sick! Thank you again for taking the time to post your comment!

    I learned how to snowboard in february last year, got taught the basics by an acquaintance in half a day. Started with duck stance as well, and I have to say: it's a good way to get a feel for the front foot you prefer.
    About five years ago I suffered from a severe ligament injury in my left knee which I still notice the impact of almost daily, and it's definitely noticeable while snowboarding. My right knee has always been my kicking foot with football, but has now become my front foot in snowboarding as well. My right leg is now the strongest one. Funny thing is I still feel most comfortable with my left, former injured knee strapped in when skating.
    Riding goofy feels more comfortable as I put more pressure on my front leg, and skating with my left foot forward feels more comfortable as it provides more stability to my weaker knee. Is this silly to you as a snowboarder? Would it be more convenient to learn how to step with my right knee? It's quite annoying to have to ride switch at the start of the slope or sit down to strap up. - Looking into getting my own gear soon, exciting stuff!

    Hey bro, just wanna tell you that your videos are really helpful. Got a lot of tips!
    By the way, for a beginner that wants to buy a snowboard, boots and bindings what brands and tips can you give us? Just looking for something cheap that I could play around, like a shit box for a car when you're getting your first car to practice with lol. Thanks in advance! Cheers!

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try and put up a first time buyers guide for hardware soon but basically, I recommend trying out a bunch of different boards/bindings before buying a new one. I definitely agree with minimizing cost early on because there are so many options out there, you won't really know what you like until you try them. Most brands have both low end (cheaper) stuff and high end (more expensive). Buy 'used' if you can. You can find sizing guides online once you find a particular model you're considering. As for boots, make sure you try them on before buying as sizing differs a lot across different brands. Check out my other series called Snowboarding 101: What to Wear.

    hey man, great videos! You're first one to recommend a 12/-12 duck stance for a first day.. any reason why not to go with something like 15/0 or 12/0 if someone is quite sure about his stance? thanks!

    • @fj5
      @fj5  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for your comment. I recommended 12/-12 because some first timers may not be able to decide stance until they try both regular and goofy. This may not be the case for everyone though. Also, my personal preference is twin boards for more freestyle riding.

    I'm really interested in snowboarding. I do not have a snowboard, but I do have a sled, on which I stand up on to practice steering snowboards. Is there a board that is made just for people who use their right foot in front? Or is the regular snowboard for both?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a directional board, it's really all on how you choose to mount your bindings so you can ride regular (left foot forward) or goofy (right foot forward). A lot of boards out there now are also twin shape (same forward and backward).

    i love soccer it is my life and how can you do a jump on your first time

    • @fj5
      @fj5  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaime Griffiths if you're going for your first jump, I would recommend practicing your ollies first and work on lifting off and landing while keeping your base flat. Go small first and be sure not to lean back too much as many first timers do and then the board slides out from under them. Keep your board straight, shoulders above your board, and don't lock your knees when landing. Good luck, hope that helps!

  • @fj5snow
    @fj5snow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    +Kevoh15 I wouldn't call it silly, it's just a very particular situation for you given your past experiences. There's nothing wrong with what you're doing, but I do recommend that you skate with same forward leg as you're normal riding position as you generally have better board control to avoid collisions and accidents coming off the lift. I think that's what you meant by riding switch at the start of the slope. As for sitting down to strap up, I don't think that's necessary with either leg. As long as you secure your board properly, you should have equal stability once you place your foot in the open binding. Try facing up the hill instead of down slope when strapping up while standing. I actually find it easier to do it this way now as my legs stay straight when I bend at the waist and my toes are already pushed up and raised by the slope. I hope that helps! Have fun!

    FJ, I notice that you wear glasses, do you wear them when boarding? If you do, do you recomend a way for anti-fog AND a pair of goggles to over glasses that are still comfterable.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mike, I generally try to wear my contacts when boarding. Sometimes I do forget to bring them though and when I do, I either wear my Electric EG2 or my Oakley Canopy over my frames. I have a video reviewing them comparatively in my fj5snow channel, if you'd like to check it out. I go over the features in a lot more detail. As for anti-fog for the glasses themselves, I don't really have a solution. I just try to keep it as dry in the goggles as possible because it all depends on the coatings on your lenses. I hope that helps!

    Your eye dominance and right/left handedness should not make a difference when riding. If you feel more comfortable goofy, then you're probably goofy, nothing wrong with that. If you want speed, then goofy will probably achieve that for you sooner. I think the ultimate goal is to get both ways to 100% comfort.
    If you're switching back and forth to stay on your heel edge down the hill, that's different. That's "leafing" and you should try to break that habit. Good luck!

    Hi, I have a question. How do you go straight? Do you normally use a flat base or the edge?
    I've seen people use a flat base but I saw one instruction saying that we should either toe or heel edge to go straight. There are places that almost flat and long where we need to go straight.
    Hope you can help me with some tips..thanks

    • @chrisyue2677
      @chrisyue2677 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Staying on an edge keeps stability.

    • @aeaeae1
      @aeaeae1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks...so when would you use a flat base? Can you give me some example? I understand that when approaching a jump we have to be on an edge too.

    • @fj5
      @fj5  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ae ake It all depends on your specific terrain. There's no strict rule, it comes down to your preference. Riding on an edge is more stable but hard to maintain at slower speeds. Riding an edge also promotes initiating a turn. Riding flat has less strain on your legs but you will likely slow down faster on flats. Examples of when you ride flat are right before you do an ollie, or if you're approaching a jump that you will take on straight, no rotations. You also ride flat on boxes and rails and when doing presses.

    People told me that if I were to slide on the floor, the foot in front would be the foot in front of your snowboard too. But you said kicking foot should be in the back. I kick with my right and I slide with my right so idk which should be in front.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, it's really just a recommendation, not a rule. In the end, it's whatever you feel most comfortable with. When you actually go out there and start leafing or turning, you'll realize which way feels better as forward. Don't worry, you'll figure it out eventually. :)

    • @robbie8825
      @robbie8825 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      fj5snow i always thought your kicking foot would be your lead, because you have more confidence in that direction, going down the hill for the first time that could make a difference between trying snowboarding again or going back to skiing

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Teepell In my case, my kicking foot is my back foot but I know people who are the opposite. So in the end, it's whatever feels most comfortable. There's no set rule at all. :)

    I am an amateur at snowboarding but I've heard that if you play soccer (and I play) your kicking foot is the front foot. Could you give me some more information on what should I do to determine which foot should be my front??

    • @ohfouroneone
      @ohfouroneone 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically if you're right-handed (or right-footed in this case), you right foot should be your back foot. Whichever foot you feel more confident with, that should be your back foot.
      That said, however, I'm right-handed and my back foot is my left foot, simply because that's how I started and that's what I got used to. It might give you a slight advantage at first, but it really doesn't matter all that much.

    • @DonKonstantinos
      @DonKonstantinos 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ohfouroneone Thanks man!! I am also a right-footed, but I started with left leg back.. I'm willing to try to change though in order to see which is more suitable for me.. Thanks again!!

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's really no set rule on this because it's very hard for a beginner to know what would be better without ever riding before. It's why I recommend a duck centered stance so that you can easily practice both ways to figure out which direction is more comfortable for you.

    • @DonKonstantinos
      @DonKonstantinos 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best way to pick which foot is forward is to do a slide test. Run and slide across the floor/ground. Pushing is a bad method. Foot that comes forward depends on too many variables.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it really depends on the person because I tried the run & slide method and according to that I should be goofy but I ride regular. To each his/her own. :)

    • @Shotokan07
      @Shotokan07 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree with fj, it's not that simple. Everyone is different. So far I've done all the tests and also make them step up the stairs to see which feet they used first. Summing it up, I get an idea for their leading feet. I've had one, who is identically strong in both sides.

      Andrew Ray Just keep at it, practice makes perfect. :) Don't worry, the more runs you put in, the more your balance and reactions will improve, and the less you'll fall. Turn - brake - turn - brake, eventually the brake periods will get shorter and shorter. Good luck!

      i go to a small hill near Barrie, called "Horseshoe" idk if you've heard of it or not.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Teepell I've been there a few times myself when I first started. Since I'm coming from Toronto, I'd rather drive the extra distance for a much bigger hill. :)

    • @robbie8825
      @robbie8825 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah that makes a good point, but the price at blue is a lot more isn't it?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Teepell It does cost more, but that's why I opt to get the 5x7 pass which saves me a lot of money with frequent visits over the whole season.

    ok I'd like somebody to finally record a snowboard tutorial with a camera on their head/forehead. That's the perspective we need better as learners, rather than the viewer's perspective like in this video ...

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good suggestion! I think the concern there is how shaky the footage might appear because the rider will be trying to balance and watch out for other people. Maybe if someone else or a crane were to hold the camera from above, independent of the rider's body. I guess you could sort of achieve that perspective if you flipped my videos upside down? Thanks for your comment!

      fj5snow ha ha, I watched one with helmet camera but it's not a tutorial, just a ride. However, I could only feel the movements, and couldn't see the actual board, which is not good for me as a learner. My guess is the camera should go on the boarder's chest. Or maybe even groins, ha ha, no seriously that's the angle to see the full board and study it... I am about to step on the board for the first time in my life, in about 2 weeks time

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Street Lights I get what you're saying, you want to see the board in relationship to your body position as you ride. It might be difficult to assess the terrain and the slope though. Also, in general, when you're riding, you want to look ahead in your direction for any potential obstacles (such as other people) as opposed to down at your board. It might not be the safest option. Since your first time is very soon, all I can say at this point is try and visualize yourself in my position as best as you can given my videos' perspectives. I hope all goes well! Good luck and have fun!

    Your striking foot when playing football says nothing about being regular or goofy. Better imagine yourself on a step or using a broom to find whether you are regular or goofy.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MsFruittwist Thank you for your comment! There are definitely a lot of different tests to determine whether a rider is regular or goofy but in the end, it all comes down to which feels more comfortable. What I did find helpful when I started was having my kicking foot as my back foot because it helped with my turns and braking. I explain it in more detail in Part 5/5 of this series. Thanks again!

      +Ivan Livic Sorry about that! Yeah, the GoPro audio capture wasn't that good and the fact that they were constantly making snow that day didn't help. ^_^ Thanks for watching!
