    Just wanted to say I enjoy coming back to to view your videos they are very good at explaining learning how to snowboard. I am 43 years old and am a self learner from your videos. I can snowboard now thanks to the video lessons you provided. I use to ski, but it was hard on an injured knee I have. I found a new passion and feel alive again! Thanks again!

    I'm not even here for the tips since I don't snowboard, but watching you just slide down so smoothly with such proficiency makes snowboarding seem so nice. I'm not even into all those people doing crazy flips and tricks...this to me seemed much more pleasant

      fj5snow Sadly not an available activity in sunny Egypt or other surrounding countries :D I definitely do plan on trying it the next time I visit a snowy place though. Is it maybe possible to learn basic snowboarding in a one week trip duration or is more time than that required?

      +Kalernor well, as the title suggests, you can learn the basics in a day with this series, provided you're relatively active with good balance. :)

    im a skier and ive just started to learn how to ride a snowboard. im having trouble staying on in the button/anchor lifts and haven't even tried to get on a chairlift (still in the kiddie slopes). could you make a video about tips on how to comfortably mount and ride the different lifts?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sheepattsleep Hi there, thanks for your question! Have you had a chance to look at my How To S In A Day series? I actually go over in more detail how to get on and off traditional chair lifts in that series. As for button/anchor lifts, I have to say those are even more difficult to use for getting up the hill as they require better control of your board and core to stay upright and balanced. I actually don't know of any button/anchor lifts at the resorts I frequent around my area, so I'm sorry about that! The best advice I can give is to stay centered on your board as you are being tugged and keep your shoulders above your board. Bend your knees and have a solid stance. Try to keep your base flat and make sure to stay upright. You want the pulling force engaged from the inside of your front leg. Do not tug on the rope with your hands as that will usually lead to losing your balance. I hope that helps!

    I would've loved to have seen these vids before i went snowboarding last weekend.
    Just a quick question, I have a history with my left knee and i ride with my right forward. Is it normal to feel like I'm stressing out that knee so much? It felt really bruised and sore that night and the next day. I remember that I was forcing my board to turn with my back leg a lot in order to go heel and toe.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +skillzxd People tend to lean on their back leg a lot especially when starting out. Back leg fatigue is quite common in snowboarding. Try to distribute your weight more evenly as you ride. That means you'll have to force yourself to lean forward more but eventually it feels more natural. I hope that helps! Check out my How To S In A Day series as well if you haven't already. Thanks!

    I had trouble with not tilting the board enough, Especially when on my toe-edge. The back edge would catch and flip me down violently over backwards.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kauwhaka If you're catching your heel edge while riding on your toe edge, it's likely just your posture. Bend your knees more and stay centered on your board. Bending your knees should help with lifting up your heels because of how your boots and bindings are shaped. Make sure they're on snug but comfortable to maximize the response. If your legs are straight with locked knees, you'll more likely catch your heel edge when riding on your toe edge. Good luck!

    If you initiate your turn with pressure on your front foot and then your back, it'll help your back foot from skidding out as much during more of your turns. It looks like you start your turns well but try and force it the rest of the way with your back foot. This will help you carve your turns better instead of scarving them out.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gareth Locke Thanks Gareth! I appreciate your tips. I understand that I am promoting skidded turns for beginners in this video as well as my 5 part series How To S In A Day. You can also find my explanation as to why I teach this way in those videos as well. I explain in more detail in my What Is Carving video too. Basically, I want beginners to feel comfortable using both edges in succession as they learn to make consecutive turns (S) but still giving them the immediate opportunity to check their speed after each turn with the skid. Carving is an advanced technique that requires additional control at higher speeds. Most beginners would benefit from a lot more practice before attempting to carve. :)

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jake Golle My front foot comment is for when you're turning while going down a slope, switching from one edge to the other, so that you can easily maneuver your back leg around you. When you're riding on powder, that's when you're usually sitting back a bit and applying your weight on your back foot.

    Hi fj5. Thanks for all your videos! I just purchased a sims 161 all mountain board. This will be my first time but I am very experienced with gravity influenced sports. I'm 185 lbs, 5ft 9inches and have a size 9 boot. I plan on riding like a soul surfer would a wave, just cruising like in this video you have. With learning some jumps ( getting some air). Do you think this board will be to fast given my weight of 185lbs?

    • @fj5
      @fj5 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tony, thanks for your comment/question! It's not so much that the 161 length means the board will go faster, it just means the longer length will be more stable at higher speeds than a shorter board. However, the extra length does mean it will be harder to turn which isn't really friendly to new riders. You generally want to follow the weight range specified for the board by the manufacturer and I normally recommend being on the shorter end of that range if you're a beginner to make turning a bit easier. I hope that helps, best of luck! Check out my Snowboarding 101: How To "S" In A Day series if you haven't already. :)

      Thanks so much, I work at a sporting good store part-time and was able to get this snowboard for 51.00 which retailed for 329.99 so if I exchange it thier is only one other board in the size you advised me on but the front of the board is separated a little ( the layers of wood has split apart about half an inch and the board is a wide version ( I did like you suggested in another video and tied on boots so I'm a nine which is a little bit smaller than my normal shoe) I guess I'll just exchange it and hope it won't seperate any. Thanks again!

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Mendez You're welcome! Oh, I forgot to mention that it will also depend on the conditions. On groomers, length doesn't play as much of a role as on powder where extra length would help heavier riders stay up (float).

    so u put weight in front at straight line for the back foot to swipe easily, is it the same when you're going very steep and fas toot? b4 i was told to do the wrong thing all the time to have my weight on the back foot, no wonder my legs get tired so quickly

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nico74321 Back leg fatigue is very common in snowboarding, not just for beginners. When going straight on groomers or harder snow, it's best to distribute your weight evenly between both legs. For easier turning on groomers, you want to lean on your forward foot so you can easily move your back leg. It's a little different on soft powder snow as you need to keep your nose up to avoid catching the nose of the snowboard on the snow and flipping forward. I hope that helps!

    Hi!
    Amazing video bro :).What are binding angles?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! You can change the orientation of your bindings by rotating the binding around the central base plate disc. You can have them both face slightly forward toward the nose, you can have one slightly forward and the other 0 (sideways), or how I like it, duck feet so the front foot slightly forward toward the nose and the back foot slightly toward the back or tail (12/-12 degrees). I hope that helps!

      fj5snow Thank you bro for tips.Which angle is a good for carving ?

    • @fj5snow

      berkerces Some people like to have both feet face forward, especially when riding an alpine board. It's all a matter of preference and depends on your snowboard as well. If you're just starting out, I recommend riding duck feet centered stance. Check out my 'How to "S" in a day' series for more tips!

    Awesome video!!! Forgive the grammar police for coming out, but the word 'progress' is often mispronounced as was in the end of your awesome video. 'Progress' is a noun indicating a thing accomplished (which is what I think you meant) and 'progress' is a verb meaning to move forward in motion. Sorry, grammar police in me. AMAZING video - thank you!!!!!

    • @fj5
      @fj5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jennifer LaMond :) thanks for watching and commenting! As for my grammar, I believe I said, "The more runs you put in, the faster your progress." Yes, I used it and pronounced it as the noun (could have also said progression). I emphasized the first syllable 'praw' (noun) as opposed to the second 'gress' (verb).
      "... the faster your progress." (n) - what I said.
      "... the faster you'll progress." (v) - what I could have said alternatively.
      I think I meant to say "your" but it sounds like "you'll". Hehe, oops! ^_^

    What's the move you do in 02:44 - 02:49? And how can I do that without falling?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a spinning tail butter. You have to hold a tail press and continually switch edges while spinning down the slope. How do you not fall? haha, well you have to practice it until it becomes comfortable for you. It took me quite a bit of time to get it. I started pretty slow and eventually was able to spin faster with more practice. You could start trying to spin without doing a press so you can get used to switching edges quickly. You need to practice your tail press separately as well. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

    How do you figure out what bindings beginners should you? Mid or toe straps?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You generally want a soft flexible binding for a beginner as it is more forgiving for beginners when learning to balance on a board. Budget is also a huge factor. Stiff higher end bindings are for more advanced riders as they provide better response. I prefer the feel of toe cap straps as they really do a great job at keeping your foot in place in the binding and I find them more responsive as well. Sometimes this may not be possible if you have really large feet/boots for your binding and the straps might not be long enough. Good luck!

      No they are not, they are most likely gonna touch the snow when you're turning on your toeside.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, you don't want your boots to stick out much or at all but really it depends on your board size and boot size. If you have large feet, it's pretty hard to avoid. You could also try rotating your stance more. Maybe you can also try adjusting your bindings to center your foot better.

    • @fj5
      @fj5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I talked about low centre of gravity, I actually said, "Keep your BUM down." as in your butt/bottom/rear end. ^_^ A lot of beginners tend to stick out their butts high as they bend at the waist instead of bending their knees. And the part about soft knees to absorb the little bumps, it's because the snow isn't perfectly groomed flat all the time. The more people ski or snowboard over the snow, it gets rough and choppy with little random mounds of snow. As you ride over this, it can feel pretty bumpy. I hope that explains it a bit better! :)

      Nice tips bro i consider myself a semi experienced rider and hit some amatuer or larger jumps and love big mountains with glades. But what you say is exactly what i say to new riders. I really like ur point on the "react to your terrain" Such a huge part of snowboarding. Look ahead and see what your getting into, always plan your route. And too add to ur vid take ur time on icy terrain no need to rush. If its icy, try and stick to the sides especially as a boarder. Skiers like to cut back and forth in the middle of trails but they have sharper edges? Better Control? I'm not sure but keep to the powder they kick up on the sides. This is directed to Eduard Rusu, and as fj5 reiterated keep that ass/rear end/glutes/can/poop shooter down and legs bent Some terrain is unforgiving but if u expect it and stay loose you'll ride right through. I realized after 6 years of snowboarding as with anything else i guess, confidence is key. Just don't go for the 30 or 50 foot booters or handrails until you know how to bail safely. As he said in the video practice makes perfect. Last point, practice switch riding thats what im on, Take runs from top to bottom as switch/goofy stance. I hate wasting runs and the trip up but i'm starting to get much more comfortable spinning in the air and doing 180s or 360s on small trail jumps. Not so much beginner tips but something to keep in mind if you wish to further ur snowboarding level. But most important HAVE FUN AND ENJOY UR TIME ON WHATEVER MOUNTAIN U HIT. And know you can visit so many places through snowboarding or skiing or skate skiing etc etc etc. Sorry for the rant but there's nothing like being on top of a mountain and flying down it whether it be straight speeding down or making your own trail through the woods. Stay safe and shred on.

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the great additional info, MrFluffstuff420! I completely agree, switch riding is so key to improving as a rider. I too still practice my switch a lot and I agree, did wonders for my 180s and 360s. You just feel so much more confident as a rider once you develop switch and I find your body just naturally counterbalances on its own. There were many times where I thought I'd bail hard but for some reason I came out of it unscathed... definitely attribute that to switch practice!

    do u lean your weight on back or front of your foot?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nico74321 If you're going straight, you want to keep your weight centered on your board as much as possible. It's very common for beginners to sit on their back leg a lot, especially on powdery days to keep the nose up on the snow. This generally leads to back leg fatigue and we all get that. Most of the time, beginners ride on groomers so again, try to stay centered. If you're turning, for beginners I recommend putting more weight on your front leg. This way you are able to lift your back leg easier as you bring it around you to complete the turn. Hope that helps! Good luck! Check out my How To S In A Day series if you haven't already. :)

    Is wearing snow pants mandatory or is just jeans okay?

    • @Bartpj00ns
      @Bartpj00ns 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      wet pants = cold pants. Jeans are not waterproof, snowpants are :) Do w/e you want

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are confident you won't fall and/or get your pants wet, and if your jeans are warm enough for long outdoor exposure, then you don't need snow pants. I've seen really good riders just wear jeans. It's up to you. :)

    I tried snowboarding 2 years ago and I broke my arm. I want to try it again this winter, and I wanted to ask you can I learn to snowboard without a teacher? Can I learn by myself? I have some basics, a friend helped me develop a stance and taught me the basics. thanks in advance, good video :D

      I think if you have a pretty good sense of balance and strong self motivation, you'll do just fine. Have a look at my 5 part series How To S In A Day. If you follow my steps in order and ensure you are comfortable before you move onto the next steps, you should get the basics down within a couple hours. The rest of the day will just be practice. :) Good luck and have fun, let us know how it goes!

      Even though I didn't watch your videos, I was able to learn how to S by myself in about 3 hours of snowboarding for the first time :P used to ski for 12 years, but hadn't touched anything in 8 years. Maybe that gave me an advantage!

    Is it kinda like skateboarding

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The similarities would just be in the core balance control and sideways stance but the introduction of the snowboard edge makes for a very different experience than skateboard wheels/trucks. I hope that helps!

    Gravity? more like normal force with low friction

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mani Cho Normal force? What do you mean?

    • @fj5snow
      @fj5snow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mani Cho Oh right, thanks for the definition, that takes me back to Physics class. hahaha I would say that all three forces: gravity, normal, and friction, play a role in your momentum as you snowboard down a slope... though gravity is the main one. ;)
