- Hello everyone and welcome to today’s video all about stem cells! I wanted to give you a broad but detailed overview of their biology. It will cover the different types of stem cells (embryonic stem cells, iPSCs and adult stem cells) and what we mean by potency, as well as how they divide and their uses, including for regenerative medicine! OMG this reminds my genetics and embryology lectures from uni! I loooved this topic! Especially the unique developpment of stem cells navigated me to my dream speciality - neonatology. Its soo interesting how our body grow and change when we leave the womb :)

I get so frustrated when we expect people to understand the minutia of research without ever bothering to explain the concept. Like COOL -IFN-Y contributes to scheduled cell death and apoptosis in MET formation.... now what the heck does that even mean?
If we want people to be interested in science, WE have to get better at communicating that science.

ah no! I tried to simplify things but I’d say this was pretty complex in places. just because it’s hard to simplify concepts sometimes without losing the key details! anyway, I’m sure if you watch it again and pause it throughout to let you mind digest the material then it will make more sense! 😊
@@byhollyg Do not worry about that it was very clear! It's just that my dyslexic brain gets confused by big words! Unless you have the power to stop science from using complicated words, there's nothing more you could have done in this video! I've not consumed any sciency material in years, if we exclude scishow!

Can you please do a 10 hour study with me!! I will find that really helpful to study, and I am sure a lot of people would watch that again and again because they are near the finals.
iPSCs are truly amazing, I’m going to work with them a lot for my Master thesis. I have already briefly done it before, but culturing them is quite a lot of effort. Looking forward to it a lot, because I will also differentiate them into organoids. Currently discussing with the PI on whether I’m also allowed to do some gene editing with CRISPR-HOT.
Oh and: You did an amazing job explaining all the concepts, extremely well-explained 😃
Sorry to break it to you, but iPSCs have their own problems. First, they cannot be put into a patient undifferentiated - they cause teratomas (cancer). Second, they have to be pre-differentiated in a culture dish. This means they, so far, can only treat diseases that involve 1 cell type, such as macular degeneration. Third, iPSCs differentiate into the fetal form of cells, which are often useless in an adult. Finally, since they were derived from the person, it was thought that iPSCs would not be rejected by the patient’s immune system. However, several studies have shown that the immunology of the iPSCs change while in culture and that they can be, and often are, rejected by the immune system.
Endogenous adult telomerase positive stem cells are much better than iPSCS.
