I'm one of the incredibly small minority of DV victims whose abuser was actually brought to court. In the end, he only got 9 months in custody, and that was actually mainly for the stalking and harassment after we broke up. The judge said he'd never seen such a sheer volume of harassment, or vile content. Only 6 weeks of the sentence was for physical abuse, despite multiple messages of him admitting to it, and even saying how much he enjoyed it. Even so, I'm beyond grateful for the incredible police woman who handled my case with so much care and dignity, and at time righteous anger towards his entitled behaviour like i was a possession. Luckiky in the UK, his sentence also means that he has to disclose his criminal record to any new person he gets into a relationship with, so hopefully he can never hurt anyone else. My therapist told me that in over 20 years as a trauma therapist, im her first DV client that received any kind of justice. This is such a real issue in the world, and books like this have a moral responsibility to contribute towards helping the problem, rather than encouraging the millions of women who never speak up and so dont receive any justice at all
I was actually really disturbed by Colleen's dedication to her dad at the beginning of the book: "To my father, who tried his very best not to be his worst." Which to me reads as "To my father, who tried his best not to be abusive." It aligns with the sympathetic attitude towards Ryle in the book. I feel like she wrote it that way to sound poetic, but to me it's just so irresponsible... I feel like Colleen both intentionally AND unintentionally romanticizes abuse with how irresponsibly she deals with the topic - as you said Hannah, just very little nuance. Read a few chapters and gave up on it, my first DNF of the year.
Blake actually styled herself and even bragged about it💀💀 She was also bragging about how the clothes she's wearing in the movie are her actual clothes like from her closet💀
Hannah: Before everyone starts typing ‘Hannah, how could you watch that movie, how could you support them, how could you give them money??’ I didn’t, that’s all we’re saying about that *sea shanties/pirate music intensify in the background*
The fact that I will NOT go to the movie theatre and spend 2 hours watching the movie, but I would gladly sit down for an hour watching Hannah explain it to me says a lot ahhaha
Ok, DV survivor here. My father was the one doing the physical violence part of the DV and my mother was the one doing more of the psychological/emotional abuse part of it. It does happen all too often (sadly) that these kinds of ppl don't get the retribution they should get. They're not held accountable. And, yet, I would've much prefered (like you) to have Ryle be held accountable. It would've shown to ppl suffering through DV that it's possible. It would give them more hope and strength to finally get out of their situations. The way the movie ended, left me with a "oh, awesome, now victims won't get out or won't try to hold their abusers accountable because they'll think "what's the point, if nothing is going to happen anyways". And regarding Lily not filing for full custody, I think the single worst thing that I've ever heard my mother say was when I asked her "Why didn't you get me out of this house when I was little? You knew how he was, he hurt you before, and he hurt grandma repeatedly. Why allow me to have such an awful life?", and she answered (with a leveled voice, thinking she had all the reason in the world and that it was obvious) "Well, because he wasn't hurting me and didn't do anything to me ever again... Why would I leave? I wasn't in any danger." I know this is a real conversation and the book/movie is fiction, but it would be the same thing Lily's daughter would probably come to conclude in the future. Just because your abuser stopped abusing you, doesn't mean he won't abuse again. Get the ones you love away from them and make sure they get retribution/be held accountable. P.S.: Yes, like I said, my mother is also an abuser (the perfect couple they are...ha. ha.) and both of them have narcissistic personality disorder (undiagnosed, but they do according do my psychologist). So, to my mother, if she isn't suffering, it's all good, because she's the only one that matters. And to my father, if those around him are obeying him and bowing to him, that's all that matters. Too bad they decided to have a kid (which they shouldn't, some ppl shouldn't have the right to have one) and I was born, someone with a strong personality and take no shit attitude. Serves them right. (Yes, before anyone who reads this gets worried, I'm trying to get out of this situation. I'm saving money to move out and I do therapy)
to everything you said about justin baldoni, YES!! THANK YOU!! i am so confused about why everyone is losing their minds over this man saying he wants to "tell a story through the female gaze" as if he wasn't literally in control of it all 😭 plus everything he's been talking about with how we shouldn't ask why women stay but instead why men harm, meanwhile he chose iewu as his source material, which is arguably the worst book to pick if you want that kind of conversation because the accountability he keeps talking about is non-existent there. the whole drama is just weird but mostly i'm just convinced the internet needs at least one woman to hate on at all times + the fact that he hired JD's lawyer told me all i need to know about him lmao
yeah i've seen so many comments defending him and i'm not interested enough in whatever's happening to do like research on it so this was new info to me
@@emnabenhamza-j6x People thin that hiring that attorney means being guilty of abuse. Basically no one can ever hire those attorneys again. The allegations against Baldoni are nothing. Claiming he fat-shamed Lively due to the fact that he asked about her weight before trying to lift her and that one kiss went slightly longer than Lively wanted in the end (she was even the intimacy coordinator) are the allegations. Her camp has made no other allegations. That’s it.
I think it was very smart of him to choose this extremely popular book with women to make a film to get across the message he's trying to highlight in his interviews about DV. He spreads great ideas on his podcast as well. It looks like his vision and his message has got bulldozed by Blake's desire to have her Barbie moment no matter what.
The way Ryle is portrayed in the book, like you said, is very dangerous. I saw proof of that when I saw comments from young girls on a It Ends With Us video where they were saying they wished he had had a redemption arc because they loved him so much and he deserved to be forgiven and a second chance. Like, so many comments saying things along these lines. Because this book romantacized his character.
Before I dive in, I just had to tell you that one of my recent birthday (8/13) gifts to myself was the Clockwork Reader reading journal and I LOVE IT SO MUCH! On that same trip to Barnes, I picked up An Ember in the Ashes on a whim. Imagine my surprise when I unwrapped the reading journal from its packaging, flipped thru and saw it was listed inside as a fave of yours. I finished the whole series in a week! lol. Okay back to the video ❤
honestly, can't blame Justin Baldoni for choosing this book. I hate it, it's bad, but so many people are reading it, it's viral, so it makes sense to choose it to talk about DV, because it is the most popular book on this subject in the last years.
thats the probem with the current art/entertainment scene. we should stop churning out things because they're "popular", rather make them because it has HEART, SUBSTANCE and AUTHENTICITY which is where quality derives from. Tired of dollar signs being the driver of art.
As someone that grew up with an DV household and now as someone that works with the DV survivor population as a therapist is quite “normal” for abusers to keep custody of their kids. It boils my blood that the system allows that. Someone that abuses an animal gets more jail time than a DV abuser.
Hi hannah I've got a video idea for you "can i guess the book title based on their 1star/ 5star reviews?" Please make this a booktube trend. BTW YOUR HAIR LOOKS GORGEOUS.
My cold brew ready with banana walnut cake, earphones on, it is raining outside the cafe, perfect time to watch another Hannah vs Hoover vid! Thank you for the upload!!!
Yes pls do more book vs movie videos! I love this. I mean, I love hearing you talk about this, cause this book and movie I will thankfully never read/watch, so thank you for your sacrifice
On the whole alleged drama about the marketing and promotion of the movie, I feel like a lot of people criticising it may have missed the tonal dissonance that IHWU was already in. Like the book tackles a serious subject with the emotional intelligence of a 14 year old discovering fanfic for the first time. And lest we forget the infamous colouring book incident. So yes, the marketing of the movie is a problem, but given the product, I don’t know why people are surprised.
you have a lot of really great points! I would also add in complaining about the movie that one of the most important parts of the book was the conversation lily had with her mom about her dad’s violence and in the movie they totally glossed over the moment and it was like 5 seconds long. I think it deserved more attention than that, personally.
Colleen Hoover was the one who asked Justin to be Ryle, he did not cast himself. And yes, maybe he was wrong when he said he wanted a female perspective and then made himself the director, but we should not be against him knowing now that his version is actually the one who makes more justice to the theme of the plot (and unfortunately we'll never see it)
I would love more book vs tv/movie adaptations videos! Also I wanted to thank you for recommending Interview with a Vampire! I just finished season 2, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s so good!!
Hannah passionately waving that spoon around in frustration was everything! The way this book/film was marketed is disgraceful. If it wasn’t for book tubers like you I would have looked at that cover / film poster and thought I was about to enter a lovely romance. Keep up the good work!! Oh and please keep the spoon and make this a series. There are so many good and bad adaptations even Manga that could be source material.
ive been waiting for your review about the movie and thank you always for your critiques, makes me realize a lot of things that there were a lot of things to not be happy about the book and the movie
I just got out of hospital for a knee op and am so happy to have a new Hannah video to watch while recovering, especially one ranting about silly little books and their silly little adaptations. I haven't read any Colleen Hoover, I haven't watched this film, but I was sat the second I got the notification listening like it was a lecture
yes to this being a series on your channel! i love hearing your thoughts & opinion on books & book to move/tv adaptations 🫶🏻 )and love the mike's mic homage 😎)
I LOVED when you did your video about The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. This was also a great deep dive that I'm glad you did! I cant wait to see which book vs movie you pick next :)
My dog kept tilting her head at Hannah's voice. It took me a moment to connect that it's cause her name is Atlas so anytime she was talking about Atlas in the story, my dog thought she was being talked to through my phone.
i would like to mention that im pretty sure blake lively said the rooftop scene was written by ryan reynolds and I think that explains the lines you mentioned
What I find baffling is that they changed the characters ages because it “seemed more realistic/appropriate,” as if that makes the situation any better.
the worst part is that colleen hoover wrote lily to find ryle attractive even after he SA ed her. she was very careless going into this book. I've seen young teenage girls LOVEE ryle and it sucks that collleen is just making more and more lilys who will grow up to think that its fine if he does that to you and youshould totally just continue on loving him. in the last few pages, everything goes back to normal on the day she gave birth (until the very end) and its disgusting
Thank the gods for your review/response! When I heard a movie was getting made my initial reaction was “oooh…noooooo.” I just want to hurl when I see the marketing of these books as romance. Maybe, because I’ve had my own experience with DV, I just don’t want it portrayed as demeaning or sympathetic. Sidebar: I have never read a Colleen Hoover book. Yes I watch a ton of book tube, so I’ve seen enough reviews. But, Nope. Can’t make me.
Thank you for mentioning the misogyny surrounding the celebrity gossip from this film. I’m all about holding accountable the people who are horribly marketing this film (which includes Blake Lively), that talks about such a serious topic. But at some point it just felt so out of proportion. Why is only Blake Lively being held accountable as if no one else has ever worked in this movie? I know she is one of the main producers and is part of all the decision making that has to do with the movie, but it’s the fact that it’s not enough saying that she’s doing things wrong (again, with a team that no one cares to talk about): she has to be the meanest bitch on the internet and people have to tear her down to pieces. She’s getting woman’d and the lack of facts surrounding all the drama proves it: it’s not about what has happened, it’s about hating a woman
This was very interesting and very important discussion! Haven't read/watched these book and movie, not going to, but I guess it might be a lot better if at least the main character was trying to hold him accountable and was met unfair court system, judge who was on the abuser side, some nasty people victimblaming her to demonstrate the real problem our society has with DM and the unfairness of it, and having not the system, but life itself who punish him. Or something similar. I was thinking about Nabokov somehow and his book "The laughter in the dark", where the very successful wealthy man was punished badly later in the story because he cheated on his wife with a minor. Although it's a different topic, I liked how here the main character was held accountable for his actions.
I remember "It ends with us" being the only book which made me want to throw it out of the room. It was such a triggering book for me, I was surprised why it didn't come with any trigger points. The movie is even worse- says a lot. On another note, I remember you saying "Pride and Prejudice" movie of 2005 is one of your favourites, mine too. I would love to see your discussion on that adaptation. On another note, you look gorgeous with both curly and straight hair 😍
I heard that Blake never uses a stylist. Unfortunately, it shows. As far as the book and movie... no thank you. However, it does entertain me to hear people dissect CoHo's stories.
35:55 not so funny story, when this movie came out one of my friends posted in our group chat asking everyone if they wanted to go, I responded quickly saying I wouldn’t be able to make it as the subject matter of domestic violence is a little too intense for me. Literally every single person who responded, at least 10 of my friends, was shocked that this movie was about domestic violence. Only one of my friends had read the book, and she was confused by everyone else’s confusion until I sent her the trailer. No one ended up going to see it.
16:29 I picked this up right when it came out, before I knew anything about CoHo, and this was the point when I out the book down. I was just so off put by his character and I was worried he was her endgame. It wasn’t until later I learned how bad this book got and was grateful I saved myself from this garbage.
Brilliant video, I agree with so many of your points - I agree making Lily the ‘perfect’ victim in the movie definitely takes out any kind of critical thinking. Also how little Ryle is held accountable is a very dangerous message to send audiences, especially those new to this subject matter or in situations like it ☹️ I’m sure it can help some people (as I’ve seen online) which is a good thing, but this man definitely needed to face some ramifications. I had no idea about Baldoni wanting a female perspective initially and then hiring himself as director 💀 I saw something online about how his cut of the film focused more on Ryle and it’s starting to feel a little more believable…
Hannah I love your take on these issues and love the way you explain things❤ If you are open to watching something of a different language there is a Bollywood movie on Netflix called Darlings it is on the same DV subject.. I don't wanna say that is a good or bad representation but just want your perspective on it.. I would love to see you discuss it ❤
"Just ugly ass outfit after ugly ass outfit...and then more ugly ass outfit" LOLLL I LOVE THIS RANT and if we look at blake's pov it is elegant and chic(or whatever) and they are from her actual wardrobe and her friend gigi's👀 like it somehow suppose to make anything better?!
omg yes when I heard Ethel in the movie I literally started to cry... why would she ever approve of her beautiful ethereal music with insane meanings to be in THIS movie :((
100% yes to the book to TV adaptation series. And PLEASE Hannah if you end up reading The Interview With The Vampire books please do this with the TV show.
Hannah I think it's worth investing in one of those Asian hand fans. Would suit your pointing to the wall so well (esp w CoHo content) plus opening it up occasionally would add some extra sassiness 🤣

The hunger games books being in the book vs TV adaptations is something I hope you do!! It will be so good!
I would love a series about book vs movie or any other adaptation maybe even story ve original inspiration of it.. love your content ❤
A man called Ove book vs A man called Otto movie plsssss
we need shadowhunters movie or series to the books!
I like how she's using a cooking utensil as a pointer
I love it when Hannah is a hater and proves her point
Thank you for the sacrifices and labor ❤
I heard that Justin Baldoni was somewhat strongly encouraged by Colleen Hoover to be the director and also play Ryle. Might be just a rumor though
I heard that Blake never uses a stylist. Unfortunately, it shows. As far as the book and movie... no thank you. However, it does entertain me to hear people dissect CoHo's stories.
yes please do more book vs movie/tv show adaptation Hannah!
We need more videos like this analysing books vs their adaptations
using a spoon as a pointer is iconic
thank you for your service as always
I'll be honest, I don't care about Colleen Hovers or her books or even hearing about them at this point, but if it's a Hannah video, I have to watch
Honestly, your hair looks gorgeous 😍
"Every single outfit Blake Lively wore felt like a hate crime." 🤣🤣🤣
I haven't read the book or watched the movie so thanks for explaining it all! I would love to watch a book vs movie series from you
I was waiting for this video the moment the movie was out
if book vs movie is a series, wouldn't the real first episode have been ballad of songbirds and snakes?
great video, would love to see more!! ❤
that’s true!! so i guess i has to be a series now 👀
@@AClockworkReader queen I can't wait to hear your opinion on the netflix dorian gray series 👀
Truly the deep dive I wanted to listen to while cooking dinner today ✨️😱💯💯💯 let's goooo
colleen hoover x hannah x straight hair the stars have aligned
Straight hair looks gorgeous on u❤
Them using my tears ricochet by TS for this movie felt like a hate crime
unforgivable fr
thank you for saying what this man really is, seeing people praising him has been driving me insane
i screamed when i saw this upload
Hannah I think it's worth investing in one of those Asian hand fans. Would suit your pointing to the wall so well (esp w CoHo content) plus opening it up occasionally would add some extra sassiness 🤣
Please make this a series 👌
THANK YOU FOR THIS HANNAH ❤️❤️ and I would love a series!!
