I once wrote a letter to him, around the time of Hollow Man. He replied with an autographed picture. He is that effin awesome.
He always seems such a fun guy. Seeing him direct is enthralling, as he acts it out, like a big kid.

Tbh, the only movie I didn't like from Verhoeven was Showgirls, Striptease was actually more of a satire imo.

@@unluckytourist weird? Nah. Insane? Yes, but not asshole insane like James Mangold. I've heard plenty of his DVD commentaries to corroborate what you're saying. Then again, Showgirls and Basic Instinct don't feel pretentious like Cuties marketing did.

Who else misses Rutger Hauer ? Not only was he an AMAZING actor ( in all languages) but he was one very gorgeous man even up until he died ! I Miss him ! 💕😢💕
Can’t believe he’s been gone for 2 years. The man was truly an amazing being; talented & also a kind soul who never spoke poorly of anyone. I recommend reading his memoir to recapture those memories
Check out the Dutch film "Michiel de Ruyter" in which Hauer plays a 17th century aged Dutch war hero in a couple of scenes. I would have loved to have seen him play a number of roles as a wise old man for at least a few more years, because he looked great in that type of role, near the end of his life.
Maybe he's in the trailer of that movie. The movie was made only a few years ago, so you may want to do a search on TH-cam. It might have been his last appearance in a movie, but I'm not sure about that.
"Blind Fury" is one of my favorite flicks. Does not get enough exposure.

David Lynch was considered for ROTJ too. He wasn't sure about the Ewoks...
Just make some Star Wars satirical ads and insert them at good points and Cgi in some Doom/Mortal Kombat style death scenes. Luke's hand is definitely needs gushing blood. You can also make Darth and other mask creatures say anything you want.
@@frenchyroastify Luke's hand not bleeding makes sense since lightsabers cautarize any wounds they make.... except from the very first scene we see them used in the original movie but it became a rule after that.
With Paul, Luke and Leia would have gone "all the way" in true explicit Game of Thrones style!

first time i hear it was from my foreman on a jobsite. hadn't watched robocop yet. laughed my ass off when that scene popped up while watching the movie. 🤣

'Starship Troopers' is a satirical masterpiece, as is 'Idiocracy'.
Same with Robocop.
In terms of satire, no. It missed the mark in so many levels. It's main value in on the action and special effects.
@@filipeamaral216 Good satire doesn't have to slap one in the face with winks and nods nor be critic-pleasing pretentious or deep. It can be subtle, like an afterthought, and is at its best when the subject matter presents itself with a linear, (seemingly innocent) underscore of 'seriousness'. The brilliance of "Network", "Thank you for Smoking", and "Wag the Dog" also come to mind. Verhoeven's cheerful 'Nazi youth' overtone, in tandem with his "Yoo vant gvuts und gore Amerika??!! - here it is 'een spades!" couldn't have been a more clever allegory to perpetual war-loving, socialist regimes. When I first saw "Idiocracy", my initial reaction was "it's a great horror movie", simply because the premise is quite plausible, and the beginnings already quite apparent (a fraction less) than 500 years hence. In short, most any film that leaves a permanent imprint triggering discussion years after the fact, has a unique degree of quality. In the very least, it becomes a 'cult classic'. As a masterpiece? That of course, can be subjective, based on one's interpretation.
Idiocracy is almost a documentary at this point.
It's just too bad he didn't have a story strong enough to stand on its own merits and chose to bastardize Heinleins story in order to capitalize on the name recognition.
He's a Dutch hero. No matter whatever anyone says. He made great movies!
Iconic director who has given us some of the most memorable and re-watchable films made. I'm a child from the 80's and its sad that nowadays there's no new iconic directors. I can't think of a young director that sticks out. All my favourites are the older ones including Paul Verhoeven.
Neil bloomkampf comes to mind. Same talent for world building
They've F'd up most of the cool properties from our childhoods by making shitty remakes or sequels. I can't think of one they haven't. Robocop, Predator, Star Wars, Aliens, Terminator, just the ones I can think of right off the top of my head. So, I get where you're coming from. But, to be fair, it's hard for a young director to be considered "iconic" because they haven't made enough films to put them in that category. There's a few young directors out there who've made a few films that are all generally considered good.

They had a pretty nasty falling out during “Flesh + Blood”, but did make peace after several years. Paul even had kind words to say after Rutger passed in 2019 & spoke well of their collaborations
He made literally dozens of episodes of the Dutch TV-series "Floris" with R.Hauer in the lead role.
They had a reunion of the Floris cast & main production team, which was genuinely moving. They were best of friends.
He is happy being recognized for his amazing films in Europe. That´s more rewarding than Hollywood will ever be.
Paul Verhoven is amazing. One of the best directors of all time.
I have to agree!find something fun and stupid, then turn it up to 11!his movies are coo, the Invisible Man was good first time I saw it, then it fell apart later on since I mean the plot was about a small group of people with a cool concept, then its just dumb chasing scenes!
@@bernhardtsen74- I remember they had to cut out a violent rape scene. Part of that scene was still in the trailer. I believe Paul was most of all interested in the mental changes in the brain of the invisible man, like in Jeckyll & Mr.Hide, or in the movie Darkman. Violence, betrayal, power and abuse are some of Verhoeven's favorite themes, and I think he wanted it to be much more of a psychological thriller than a horror movie.

Have you seen Elle? It's one of his last films, in French, with Isabelle Huppert giving a fantastic performance and it's a brilliant thriller that should have had much more recognition than it did.
Highly recommend if you haven't seen it.
He is the reason why Robocop 2 is a serious downgrade without him.
I think Verhoven's long-time cinematographer, Jost Vacano, deserves mention. I loved his solid camera work, and wonderfully balanced lighting. His mark on those movies is as relevant as the director's.

It's a good thing that Paul made his Hollywood classics when he did, because there's absolutely no way that any American studio today, including Netflix, would allow him to make them the way that he did in the '80s and '80s. He's too original, too subversive, too daring ... too smart.
His big 3 are such a huge influence on my appreciation for Sci Fi and Cyberpunk dystopia. And he's so creative. He blends cartoonist with visceral.
I'm almost positive Verhoeven had gotten lung cancer a long time ago, I'm glad he survived it and is doing okay, legendary director.
Yeah I can't understand how Tarantino gets a pass on violence on screen but Paul was frown upon.

Tarantino came later and it's actually generally the sexually explicit stuff that got Verhoeven in trouble.

Tarantino actually doesn't get a pass. Everytime one of his films comes out we get subjected to endless pearl clutching think pieces by hack bloggers pretending to be outraged at the level of violence in his films

Joblo is my favorite group of channels on TH-cam and maybe any entertainment I’ve ever consumed. I love every video from the wtf happened to all the way to the horror movie channel vids and beyond. Please never stop never stopping! A beyond thankful fan!

I'm always disappointed when people I meet think Starship Troopers is just a dumb action movie. It is that on the surface, but the satirical undercurrent is pretty heavy handed and hard to miss in my opinion.
I disagree. The book was better, his movie was more of a parody. Heinlein would have called it shit.

Same, he is the only "Shut up and take my money" director on my list. I hope Kamran Pasha is right, when he claimed Paul Verhoven is obsesively working on a movie about the first Crusade.
I remember we bought tickets for another movie and snuck into robocop and just being blown away. His use of the media, and even commercials as exposition and world building has never been matched. I did not know he was up for Empire director. That gives me chills just thinking about that.

Starship Troopers is in my list of 100 best movies of all time, one of the few science fiction movies that truly never gets old, for me is just as good as Aliens, and both compose probably the best soldiers against aliens movies of all time (pretty specific category, but surprisingly big, and I love it), it is also one of the very few movies that keep moving higher on the list with time.

In a perfect world, Paul Veerhoven would've directed one of the Expendables movies. And James Cameron and John McTiernan would've directed the other 2.

It was... fine. Forgettable, but fine. It is just that just fine doesn't cut it when you are Verhoeven.
Hollow man was no masterpiece but it wasn't as bad as people say it was. Compared to half the crap they make today it was pretty good.
It was great special effects wise, but so forgettable (Josh Brolin and Kim Dickens have major roles in this movie?!?!). I think there just wasn't enough Verhoeven world building. IMHO if the military pressuring the scientists and their motives was amped up, this could have been up there with The Thing and The Abyss (which could be done with existing footage and editing new scenes in as the original cast would not be needed to add... idk... maybe some scene of the Joint Chiefs deciding on how ethical this research is or if the POTUS should even be informed). The casting was a bit off for me too as KB and ES were associated with more coming of age and light hearted movies at the time, but that's more of a Me Problem; [their] performances were good. Anyway, that's me commenting my comments in the comments.

Same. That kind of fictional world you just want to dive in to get more of it.... a series, a sequel, a video game, it doesn't matter, the setting deserves more.

The man really had an acumen for dark satirical films with “Robocop” & “Starship Troopers”. His Dutch films are also pretty good and Verhoeven has been thriving since returning to Europe for his work. It’s hard to keep momentum going in the studio system

Pretty good..? Soldier of Orange is a masterpiece, Black Book is great, and older, very good ones like Spetters really touch your soul & hit hard as you become older; Theres so much more to Paul Verhoeven's work that you dont see initially....

Just being the guy who made 3 movies that people like isn't enough for studios to want to continue funding movies especially when one was in 87, one was in 90 and one was in 92...He was NEVER an American director the majority of his work are European movies
Slowly forced out of Hollywood....sounds investing but has nothing to do with reality. He lost interest in making action spectacle and came (back ) to Europe to make more serious character driven pieces. Stop making shit up.

There are great independent American films made that are kind of made outside of the Hollywood system

Just realized Paul Verhoeven is my favorite director, made all the movies i love the most as a kid i loved the violence, gore and nudity, as an adult i appreciated them as a commentary on contemporary culture.

This guys movies were special, they had a certain feel to them no one else can do, Starship troopers has to be one of the most underrated movies ever mostly because it's so misunderstood. It's a shame Showgirls killed his reputation and we didn't get to see any more sci fi classics from him, I know he had to have another gem left in him.

_Showgirls_ - for all it's flaws - is a masterpiece of dynamic, kinetic action direction & editing.
I think Showgirls was flawed with the script and the screenplay but PV did what he could making some magic along the way.
u forgot to mention one thing, he began he carriere, when tv was still in black with a tv show called : Floris about knights in the middle ages and is so impressive, everyone watched it here in the netherlands , and it was also the debut of rutger hauer as Floris !

Crazy, as I JUST watched Hollow Man last night on HULU.
Many are stuck by saying that he is the director that made SHOWGIRLS and then went to obscurity. They are so wrong!

Starship Troopers is one of my fa vourites. It was the first DVD I ever bought. Went through every extra feature. What a gem!
I always thought that Starship Troopers was filmed from the viewpoint of a commercial ("would you like to know more?") and that all that is shown, including the acting, was filmed in a way to sell a product (the war). Even the main characters are cast like the beautiful people you see in commercials. Rico and Carmen look literally like sculpted Ken and Barbie dolls.

Agreed, transparent enough as propaganda, but invigorating and amusing enough that we're drawn into it and we see how we can be mobilised by it. It's a pity more people didn't take that to heart.
It's more an idealized world of good and bad if you ask me.
it was a very different beast than the novel, which was a political commentary purely.... the film shares the title and some basic ideas, but is a completely different animal.. not bad, simply different. Cheers!

Out of all the directors who have an iconic style to their work, Paul's is right up there with Tarantino and a few others for taking the most risks in the right ways where the payoffs feel so satisfying!

We can thank him for launching Rutger’s career 😄 it was thanks to their collaborations that Rutger became so beloved in American films; his Dutch films really got him popular in the US. If only they had worked together before we lost Rutger, but what they gave us was amazing

It’s so sad he had to live through the bombings of The Netherlands as a boy. His parents were almost killed in one bombing, I couldn’t imagine that horror when I was a kid growing up in Louisiana.
The ww2 kids I talked to were more terrified of being separated from their parents than anything. Most have said it was quite exciting
I pretty much love every movie he’s directed. I use to be a dancer and I actually never saw showgirls until I retired from dancing, I really enjoyed I didn’t realize everyone hated it.
This documentary is is really done with broad strokes. Verhoeven was born in Amsterdam, but moved to The Hague a few years later, where he saw the bombs fell on Bezuidenhout due to the wrong bombardement by the English. That leaves a mark on you as a small child.
Not to mention calling him Paul Veerhoven.
He was Quentin Tarantino before there was a Quentin Tarantino.

Him and Stanley Kubrick are my favorite directors of all time, but I'm not telling you you're wrong, it's your opinion. I get it, I'm like that with Christopher Nolen, most folks thinks he's really good, but I don't care for most of his work. It's art, it's subjective, it's cool to have different opinions.

Well what can I say, that was a brilliant video of Paul's entire work, so good in fact that I am now gonna have to goddamm review every goddam movie he's ever made, on my video, retrospectively, of course, I may even have to revise my opinion though....

Anyone else think the narrator of this series of videos is trying too hard? The vids are well produced, have good information, and are overall well made. But using 10+ different modulations to his voice makes him tedious to listen to, as if he doesn't believe the content and script are interesting enough on their own. Maybe it's just me, but I wanted to at least throw my two cents into the void of the comments section

His Dutch films are great. Turkish Delight, Soldier of Orange, Zwartboek (Black Book), The 4th Man, and yes, Spetters are all fantastic. Not enough of his fans have delved into his Dutch work!
I agree! All of his Dutch films original titles are in Dutch language (not just Zwartboek). The original titles of the movies you mention are: Turks Fruit, Soldaat van Oranje, Zwartboek, De Vierde Man, Spetters.
@@hansolo2121Yes, of course. I opted for the English titles so the recommendation would be easily digestible. When I saw Zwartboek in the theater it had its Dutch title, which is why I probably kept that one as it was intended.

I remember seeing Starship Troopers when it came out... I was 11. I was a big History buff back then and kinda understood most of the propaganda stuff. Now its just so good.
