  • David was seeking $200,000 in return for a 25% stake to help Clever Score expand internationally. He had been running the business for 10 years with no margin erosion - factors that looked good on the surface. But as they dug deeper there were some clear red flags which later turned into no-go zones.

An international sensation, Shark Tank AUS features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Tank from our Sharks, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

    "What's your name mate?"
Well you see, my parents spent several months thinking of the perfect name, They didn't want to outright use my dad's name, or grandparent's, and their middle names were all terrible for a first name, so they decided to start looking through obituaries to find a good name, after a few weeks of that, they realized: "We shouldn't give our baby a dead person's name". So they tried the yellow pages. They got about 1/3rd of the way through the "A"s before realizing there's too many names, so they settled for David.
    "Okay, where you from?"
Well, my dad was from Cambridge, and my mom was from Portugal, and although I was conceived in Melbourn, my parents did a lot of moving around, and-
    I'm out.

She is a music teacher so the classes are rotated and it's a competition between classes; which class has the best behaviour. So if they start getting noisy, the colour would go from green to yellow, if they keep quiet after it'll turn back to green and so forth. The colours are kept score of and then a winner is announced at the end of a term with a possible reward.

This guy was all words and no numbers. Clearly he had no idea what the 200K was for. He just pulled that out of the air. The only expense was a website for 20K. And as a guy who is not a businessman, and as someone who admitted he needs the mentoring most of all, for him to concentrate on percentages was so self destructive. 50% of a small pie is 50% of nothing. But that is a common fault with these people. They think small and they have big egos, rather than the reverse.

He felt he was worth something ,which he is I feel, and put a number on it out of ego. Should have been honest and asked for like 10k for the 20 percent if anything and said I want to make the website and get your help. Done. Probably gets 3 offers.

He needs to learn fast, which I doubt he could. That blue suit guy has the experience and connections to do all that for him, all he has to do is just sit back essentially and watch the money roll in. Just follow his instructions and you don't have to do the thinking.

I will be really honest this seems like a step backward more than it is a step forward as far as these numbering systems go. Even going from "1" to "2" includes flipping most of the little bars that make up the numbers around. Every scoreboard I have ever seen even like at smaller games has been on an electronic board. The pros have the nice ones, the kids have just the basic ones. I assume some computer is feeding them the information or otherwise some guy has a terminal he's able to actually just enter the numbers with a keyboard or whatever. Nobody is gonna want to have to flip all those things around, in a fast scoring game like Basketball it would be an absolute nightmare.
