Its how they get their promo pics. They buy the original and take professional photos or even worse just copy the ones from the original seller. So when you go online and see the pic you think its going to be much higher quality than it is.
@@sophiesstopmotionstudios4927 omg yesss the blogilates girl. I felt so horrible for her because they ripped her style down to the entire marketing style
Just a note - as someone who does work at Fabricland, you should always wash your fabric first before sewing with it. Some of the materials shrink after the initial wash, it also helps with those unknown stains and marks. :)
Honestly applies to every fabric. There are fabrics that becomes softer (sometimes stiffer) after washing, and it can really ruin your sewing plan. Also it just feels nice to have a clean fabric to work with. The only thing that suck about this is you have to iron the sheet (especially if it is linen or something)
"Making things yourself is cheaper" can be true, but only if you have the equipment to do so, specifically the sewing machine. You can get a cheap one, but they don't work well (in most cases) HOWEVER, a lot of libraries now have a "library of things" you can rent! One sort of local library by me has a ton of crafting tools and a quilting sewing machine! And it's completely free to use if you have a library card.
Making things yourself is NOT cheaper unless you only buy polyester fabric and shitty cotton. If you buy wool, silk, linen, etc that can get very costly even for just 1 yard/metre. I think the most expensive fabric I've seen in person was 109 dollars a yard for some beautiful wool tartan
@@zvezdoblyat shein uses shitty fabric too... in most of their products.... so I think better to make yourself the same things from the same shitty material for less money. And if you a beginner start with that type of fabric. If you know what you doing and you can afford good material this is the best. I started buying expensive materiel only for things that i KNOW how to make and that im sure that they will feet like a glove on me . I hope this helps . btw i dont recommend following this video this is not a professional way to sew. but again if you dont know where to start this is ok video. sry for my english
@ELIZABETH ooh yeah I know shein uses shitty fabric. Lol their clothes always look like Halloween costumes from the dollar store. I'm not trying to justify fast fashion at ALL. It's better in many ways to see your own clothes. You can make whatever you want, and it can fit perfectly, be adjustable, and flattering. But for beginners who don't really know how to sew, it's not exactly cheap since they may use too much fabric, make something wrong and have to discard it, etc. That's what my point was; I should've written it out in a better way
Mia as a plus size girl, i just wanna say thank you for always including me in your videos and thinking about EVERYONE in your clothing videos, makeup videos, etc 🥲 you are THE most inclusive and kindhearted soul - don’t ever change ❤️
If nobody has said it yet, I don’t feel like you have to match colors for projects like this if you like other colors more. This could be a fun series!
That’s what I experience every time Mia does something new on her channel… My most recent obsession is pottery but I don’t have the equipment to do it 🥺
@@ronathebear oh no body is forcing you not to buy it, but we will definitely laugh when we see your wearing it. You can tell what’s SHEIN. Sooo cheappp. Thrifting is so much better & even cheaper prices.
The fact that you felt kinda guilty about not including the price of a sewing machine and then decided to do a giveaway😭😭Mia you are way too good to us😭♥️
It was cute but I’m sure the sewing machine wouldn’t be expensive in the long term if you bought secondhand. I bought mine for 70 bucks and works amazing.
Sewing machines can def get expensive, but they last FOREVER.. I learned on the sewing machine that my mom learned on when she was 3 or 4 and has used growing up, which is the sewing machine that my great grandma used throughout her life. Keep in mind we all sew/craft A LOT. That sewing machine still works on everything except thick fabrics lmaooo so we had to get a new one
There are libraries (at least in Australia) where you can rent a sewing machine for free! You just book in how long you need and use the sewing machine room 🤗 Love this idea btw of making your clothes instead of giving the company more money 🫶
Having lived with a medieval reenactor during uni, I will add that it is absolutely possible to sew this by hand. My housemate and her reenactment group would have sewing circles every Thursday where everyone would come over and hang out while hand sewing their costumes with historically accurate hand stitching techniques. They sewed the whole shebang from shifts and petticoats up to riding cloaks. If they could completely hand sew some of the amazing ten layer masterpieces they did, then these simple patterns are completely doable. More time consuming, yes, but those who like crocheting or knitting can attest that it's a very calming and meditative process. So, even if you don't have a sewing machine or the money to get one, definitely you can give this a go!
Your right, but most poor people shopping at shein do not have the time or money to do that, and i, a physically disabled person, experience severe pain with hand sewing, so it doesn't work for everyone
Absolutely, I once made an xxxl tiered skirt that amounted to double circle length at the bottom completely by hand in a week just in the evenings. Bernadette Banner has a great tutorial for handsewing for beginners.
a note for my bigger and curvy gals guys and pals!! As a bigger girl who is an intermediate sewest. sewing is great to make cloths that make you feel amazing. I will say if you try to use patterns even when using exact measurements I still find that cloths don't fit my proportions. If that happens don't let it get you down! It was super discouraging to me when I first started, I found myself thinking "there has to be something wrong with me if even cloths I made myself don't fit." THATS NEVER THE CASE. its always the cloths not you!! tracing cloths you own is the best way to get a good win under your belt before going to patterns (something I wish I did) so i absolutely adore this video and I hope it get's more people making their own cloths it can be so rewarding even with the huge ups and downs!!!
My struggle is that the fashion industry doesn't really embrace designing for larger body types (or even people who are proportioned differently from sample size) but I'm trying to learn as I go and find niche textbooks that address how to do alterations.
@@TheSongwritingCat its such a leanring process and I know when I started sewing I never heard anyone talk about it. it was always "make you're own cloths so they fit right!" but never what to do or how to find out what to do when it doesn't go according to plan, even if you did everything right. if you have any textbook recs id love to hear! I've never even thought about finding books to help I've just been strong arming my way through trial and error lol
@@colorsaremyfrends I have Patternmaking for Fashion Design so I can draft patterns based on my measurements. I've been making slow progress reading Fitting and pattern alteration by Liechty. It's slow going for me because the book is not exactly body positive but I think it'll be useful for an intermediate (I'm definitely beginner). I'd like to learn draping but I don't have a mannequin in my size.
I don’t really sew, besides a few super simple items (basic flowy skirts and drawstring pouches for the Renfaire), but I saw something that seems like it would be perfect for anyone with unique sizing-make a dress form from your own body! Years ago I saw a video where the person wrapped themselves in layers of duct tape and then cut it off, and stuffed it somehow to make it solid. A quick search just now gave a bunch of results, with different methods to either make your own dress form from scratch, or customize a generic one for your own measurements
Mia, I just want to say I find it so admirable that you just dive into projects regardless of whether you have any relevant experience. I often see a project I want to do but I’m so afraid that I’ll be bad at it that I never do it. Like I would be so scared to dye a piece of clothing or sculpt polymer clay earrings or TILE MY WHOLE FREAKING KITCHEN/ BATHROOM so I just never would. You inspire me to just dive in and not be afraid of mistakes and embrace the learning curve! Thank you!! ❤
I do agree!! It’s hard to jump into projects when there’s a fear of failure. But I’ve learned in life…. *just cause I might not be good at something, doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it* 🥰
The way I look at things is, I have two hands that are capable of performing the function of any task any other person can do, and a brain the same size as everyone else too. We are all capable of doing anything, we just need to take the time to research.and learn.
I’ve noticed recently that SHEIN has gone up in price and isn’t really anymore affordable than other fast fashion brands like H&M or Primark in some cases. I’ve been trying to buy things second hand online and only shop fast fashion when I really can’t afford or find anything. We can all do our bit to reduce fast fashion impact !
Lol H&M is not cheap at alllll 😂 I bought a jumper there for £30 the other day where as on shein it would’ve gone for £12. H&M has similar prices to Zara. I don’t shop at shein so they probably have upped their prices like plt did
SHEIN is definitely not worth their recent price hike considering their hit or miss quality and terrible business practices.. I’m not sure who they think they are selling $30 jeans that used to be $10
I noticed that too! prices have gone up and now when you go to the filter and want to choose the fabric option (cotton) it isn't there! I honestly only like to buy clothes if they are made of cotton, so having this filtering option to save me time helped a lot, but now they have removed that... I believe it is to make people waste more time on the app.
20:40 For those looking for an affordable sewing machine, keep your eye out for used ones! They pop up all the time at thrift stores for pretty affordable. I recently got this beautiful antique one that was built into a desk for only $20! Furthermore, though a whole lot slower, hand sewing is still an option. It can be very therapeutic
Also, not sure if it exists everywhere but try looking up “[your area] sewing forum” or something similar. If a local group exists, someone there will be looking to get rid of a machine or know the best spots to find one. Plus, they know their stuff and can tell you if any parts are broken/hard to repair.
You giving away a sewing machine to someone is SO NICE! I’ve been saving stuff I’ve wanted to make for a long time, and have watched lots of tutorials, but don’t have a sewing machine so it’s just been for funsies. And YESSS to more content like this!
I'm gonna be honest this video has encouraged me to pick up my sewing hobby again and start making my own clothes again! Thank you Mia I love your videos!
Great video, love the concept! As a sewist, I’d love you to show how long each piece took to make from start to finish. The cost of sewing/crafting/creating includes time, not just the materials. It would show how exploitative fast fashion is. 😊
It's so nice of you to have thought of all the people who can't afford a sewing machine, then decided to start working on a giveaway! I know so many people, including myself and my mom, who would love to begin sewing as an affordable alternative to buying clothes, but have never been able to afford the machines for it. A giveaway like this would literally change someone's life!!
Mia giving away a sewing machine is the most "Mia" thing ever. I actually got a Singer sewing machine for my birthday in high school, but I didn't use it for a long time. In the past year, I've gotten a lot more into sewing, so I'm really grateful that I already had one. Knowing how to hand sew is super important, but having a sewing machine definitely makes things easier if you're trying to repair or make adjustments to larger items.
Mia, THIS is why you have a loyal, dedicated fanbase. You gaf about us! You are so thoughtful and truly seem like such a sweet and genuine soul! You're dope af, girl. Never stop being you.
You can probably also include the labour cost with the standard price just to slap shein in the face and show people how underpaid are their workers. Your confidence in sewing makes me feel confident to take up my sewing project too, which i had already bought necessary tools for. You go girlll!
Definitely need to include labor cost to compare it to shein. Everyone always thinks making your own clothes is cheaper than buying them, then they undervalue your work. Don't. It's such a skill & deserves to be valued!
yeah but is made in another country like some USA say "bc clothes in Shien are so cheap 10-15 dolars" but that is the normal price of clothes in my country, I shop in Shien just for style on those expensive plus size hard to make clothes
@@ArMaGeDdOnX14 yes also the process is different than making your own, I guess its build more effective, everyone does one part of an item and not all do one item per person. So that way it may be more quicker and also cheaper. Not that I support fast fashion like that but just to inform/speculate.
I like that you base your patterns off of clothes that you already have and know fit you. That really helps make sure it fits right as long as the stretch of the materials is similar enough
Can we just talk about how great Mia’s new hair looks so fabulous?? I really love how sophisticated you look Mia! Like you just grew up from a hair cut! ❤
She’s such an amazing person, no other TH-camr would have added the bit about needing a sewing machine, but to then try and give us the opportunity to win one!? Saint Mia, y’all
As a plus size girl who literally gets anxiety when I shop anywhere, I really appreciate this video. It really gives me the confidence to make my own fashionable clothes. The amount of times I find things that I love and have to put back because my size isn't available is so sad.
my experience is definitely not the same as plus size but as an l/xl it’s already hard to find cute pieces or even ones that fit properly. i hate that the fashion industry is like this
@badlyplanned9259 I don't disagree with your point of view. I'm only saying it's more convenient because it's difficult to find stuff unless you make them or hire someone to make them. I don't think most people have the luxury of hiring someone to make them clothes, and frankly I'm too lazy to learn sewing just to make myself nice clothes in a body I don't even like and waste fabric and time, so.... drop the weight was the convenient choice for me :)
do it! ive been plus size and normal size and it doesnt really matter what amount of weight, people have such unique bodies that most clothes do not fit entirely all the features so doing it yourself and having custom fit clothes is really something! look for a used old sewing machine they are usually not super expensive (mine was only 30€) and do a great job.
Another note, since 2020/2021 the prices in thrift stores especially in my state (California) have skyrocketed, a shirt used to be less than $2 and now could be $10 and there's clothing cheaper at Walmart/Target, which is a very big shame/sad 'cause Thriftstores were a staple when I was growing up poor and the only reason I had any clothing as a kid and teenager.
I went to a local thrift store recently and I always look at the tags to see the brand. Several of the shirts I thought were cute were SHEIN and probably priced higher in the thrift store than new!
I watch several thrifter/resellers and prices have gone up all over the country. The thrift store near me is actually pretty reasonable. Goodwill has gotten really greedy. They have been keeping some of their better donations and auctioning them off for themselves; so much for the nonprofit they used to be! Found out the CEO makes $500,000!
110% this! A large percentage of my wardrobe and home is filled with Thrifted items, but I hardly go anymore because it's not worth it for the decent items.
I've been shopping at thrift stores my whole life and live in southern California and have since birth. Mom and pop thrift stores are cheap and always have been. Salvation army and goodwill have always been over priced. I went to a local store today and found tons of shirts priced at $2. 🤷🏽♀️
@@angelrebekah9153 Congratulations, happy that you found deals. I have only gone to local ones, I've never been in a Goodwill or Salvation Army in my life, there was a hospital charity one here that was always expensive that I haven't looked into. This doesn't change the fact prices have jumped and it's not just my experience.
I feel so conflicted about this, my colleague literally told me today she's saving up to buy a bunch of stuff on shein. I know how much she makes, I know she can't afford as many pieces as she'd like from good quality brands, and honestly I think she's craving the experience more than anything, but other than telling her my experience, dissuading her outright just feels wrong. I wish influencers would be more responsible in addressing the problems with this company and others like it. Participating in a trend has become such a serotonin rush, even knowing you might be wasting money is not enough to dissuade even the most sensible of people. How insane is that??
We love a queen who can recognize her privilege and then actively do something ! It’s acts of kindness like this that make Mia the best person on this platform. She may not give away new cars or millions of dollars but she recognizes that not everyone can do the things she can and she is always trying to find ways to save everyone some coin! I am so inspired to start making some earrings!
This video was a super cool idea, and I love how everything turned out! The jumpsuit was a happy accident as it appears to be a tie dye print! I love that you will be doing a sewing machine giveaway as it can help someone out who wants to begin sewing!🥰😍💘
I’ve been loving how real your content has been lately, always feels like I’m facetiming my friend & catching up ❤️ Your attention to detail and ability to make everything feel like magic is such a blessing to those around you 🦋Thank you for shining your light in the world 🤍
thank you for this!! i get why people shop there if they can’t afford other things or bc it has their size but it’s nice to see a big creator advocating for how bad their ethics are
Mia your sewing skills blow me away every time you upload a new sewing video. I've been sewing since 2019 and I haven't done ANYTHING like what you do! I couldn't even begin to attempt! ❤
Mia!! Please do this again! I love you bringing awareness to how toxic fast fashion is but also giving a solution!! And I loved watching it, you’re so good at sewing!!! 😍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Mia! I love how you took what people wanted (shien hauls/reviews) and put your own spin on it. It’s so inspiring how you’re creating a brand new path, and probably a wonderful vid idea others will use!!
Congrats! You discovered not just rouching, but draping! My mum did fashion design and apparently this was by far the most fun and rewarding part of design. So glad to see creativity like this! Spurring me on to get to sewing myself. All the best :)
I love watching Mia grow her skills through her videos. You can definitely tell that she loves it and loves her supporters. I love Mias personality and kindness she shows. ❤
Yes! So true. In the past, I would cringe when I watched what she was attempting to do but she just kept on doing it, showing the successes as well as the not so successful attempts. And today voilà she’s quite accomplished and fearless when she attempts something that she wants to try. I’m beginning to think she would make an act excellent actress on the screen.
pleeeeaaase make this a series!! I love this! I have so much thrifted fabric, I think I may break out the sewing machine soon and get working on my spring wardrobe 😊
You are one of the most human creators out there! So caring and giving and it's definitely not just for show like some creators. You're such a genuine person. I love that.
Mia is doing SO well sewing. I'm a seamstress and I'm so proud. Next step to make your clothes look even more professional, you need a serger or also called a overlock machine 😊 also, when making the stretchy pants, you do want to trace the front and back differently. The crotch area (front center seam of pant) is a lot shorter than the back center seam where your butt is. You need more length to go in between your legs. Just a Lil tip from me to you. ❤ keep going! You're so freaking talented
Do you think the serger attachments/feet you can get for a normal sewing machine are any good for an amateur? I've seen ones that cut your fabric as you sew just like a serger does, but I wasn't sure if they work the same way.
Sergers are amazing for stretch fabrics, but a pain to thread! What I've been doing and is more beginner friendly, is using a stitch that makes the seam and goes over the edge. Both my 1975 machine, and my 2010 machine have the same great stitch for that, and it just looks so professional. And yes, front and back is pretty important and can vary a lot from person to person, so knowing how to adjust that is what helped me a lot, even though I prefer looser pants, most of the paper bag style.
@@Lesuhlee I've seen those but there are sort of two things that make me skeptical. The ones that actually cut your fabric like a serger blade seem a bit less practical as sergers are made to have the extra seam allowance fall down in one area so you don't accidentally get it stuck and end up with a mess. A sewing machine isn't the same shape, so I feel like that could be an issue. And if you don't want to cut it, most if not all machines after 1970 have a built in stitch that works the same way. It looks like _/__/__/__/__/_ and works on stretch fabrics, goes over the edges, and makes a nice clean seam. I use it on swimwear mostly, but I've used it on cotton too, and I just go over the edge with a rotary cutter if there are any frayed pieces that didn't get sewn in. I'd say experiment with different stitches and see if you can get away with not cutting it. Yes, it makes things faster, but only when you have things set up properly. I have multiple machines so I can just swap between ones with different settings and for different parts of a garment if needed, but if you have one, it's nice to not need to change attachments all the time if you don't have to.
wow tracing your clothes to make new ones is such a simple idea but it has really inspired me. I recently got a sewing machine but I have been in paralysis deciding how to make a piece of clothing. I can't wait now!!! Love the video.
Use inexpensive fabric. That way the most expensive thing "wasted" is your time, and you can chalk it up to a learning experience/prototype phase. Practise, practise, practise. Good luck and have fun.
the first video i watched of yours was the micarah tewers valentine's day dress and to watch you go from "how did this work out so well???" to "this is intentionally good" is amazing. it gives me so much hope for my own sewing

Mia, this is definitely one of the best videos yet! You are really showing us better ways to get the designs for cheaper AND that actaully fit us! You also make it look so fun. THANK YOU for being so positive 🥰
Mia, I'm so beyond impressed at how far your sewing skills have come. I think that your pieces turned out really good. The red dress is probably my favourite. Thank you for encouraging people to try new things.💙💙💙
I really love the way Mia encourages us to be creative and do all kinds of projects, and the way she guides us even if she doesn't have 100% of sure about how do do some stuff and just try anyway to see if it'll work or not. Also, that haircut looks so freaking cute!! I love it
I really appreciate this video and the overall way you bring attention to issues in the world in a positive way. Showing people they can make their own clothing is so important. And thank you for targeting this towards the company and not the actual people who have to work for places like shein. They are so talented to be able to make 100s of identical garments in a short amount of time and under very stressful conditions. Thanks Mia❤
A few extra tips for clay earrings. Acrylic paint works great if you seal with polyurethane, and when the clay is wet you can actually use eyeshadow as a pigment to rub on, and it works like rub n buff gold, or dry brushing. If ever you’re out of a color, want a metallic finish, or need to add super tiny details.
Okay this has inspired me. I've been wearing blue jeans jogging pants or sweatpants and t-shirts for years because I cannot justify spending money on cute clothes to wear because anytime we have money to spend I need to get my kids things that they need. But this has inspired me to make things for them and myself
If I wasn’t chronically ill I’d probably start sewing, I already bought a machine but I’ve used it like once. I have too little energy but you do inspire me Mia ❤ shein is so shady anyway so we love a homemade dupe!
I was planning to learn how to sew and then I had a giant health setback. I ended up picking up crochet since I can do it lying down. Which I know is not the same, but still fun.
Don’t feel bad for not being able to sew, I do it for a living and is so more laborious that people make it seem😅 small projects or making things little by little is totally okay🥰🥰
every time i watch one of your videos i think of how proud mama maples must be of you & your character.. you’re simply the nicest creator i’ve ever watched.. thank you for being so kind to us!!
The homemade clothes turned out so good! My favorite is the green jumpsuit. The green tye dye looks pretty. Mia, thank you for encouraging us to try something new. It's so nice that you are doing a sewing machine giveaway.😊💕
It’s been so cool to see you channel go from a crafting channel, to a haul channel and back to a crafting channel just with more audacity. It’s been so great actually getting to see your skills improve
Love all the new hairstyles you are doing now. Can I say how much we love that you are always so considerate and think of your subscribers? Your sewing skills have drastically improved and these pieces are pretty spot on.
Mia! I just wanted to give you a little compliment. You are a great role model for younger girls in the way you are trying to highlight awareness the SheIn’s improper treatment towards their workers and way they impact the environment with their fast fashion model. The way you are also aware that some people can’t afford sewing machines are planning to do a giveaway speaks to the type of person you are❤
I have watched quite a few of your videos, but I have to say, this is one of my favorites. Watching people create, is so satisfying. Also, the vertical stripes, actually look much better. Beautiful pieces.
Okay but can we take a moment to say how far you’ve come?? You made SO MANY pieces in this video! Love them all, makes me want to dust off my sewing machine!
Everything you made came out, absolutely beautiful. For the bodycon dress, get some ruffle, frilly material and sew it to the bottom and possibly layer one more ruffle so it adds to length and gives a fun twirl moment. You could also add the same ruffle to, the tank top sleeves. I feel like it would really elevate the dress. And that way you can wear it and not just hang it in your closet or have to repurpose the fabric 💋
I've been sewing my own stuff for about 8 years, but especially the last 4, and it's so fun! You can customize the size, colour, fit, and details. I use a lot of thrifted sheets to sew things, and it's great! I usually sketch my idea first and draw where the seams will be and get the basic shapes, then I use existing patterns or clothing to get the basic design, and then add extra seams and shape, whatever needs to be done. I'm currently working on making something for my wedding. I'm going for a fitted bodice, super wide leg jumpsuit bottoms, and then I'm planning to buy a skirt to go overtop for a train/overlay. I also find a lot of swimwear isn't as hard to make as people think. I've also made a full body swimsuit, mostly so I can swim in the ocean without fear of jellyfish, but also because the ocean is cold. It makes me feel like a superhero, and all I did was trace a long sleeved shirt, and some leggings, traced that on to newspaper, and then cut the pieces where I wanted to colour block. I also get a lot of $1 patterns from thrift stores, which are great starting places. I also love dying stuff, but I usually do tie-dye, and it's a lot of fun! I want to try ice dye this summer, but I can't decide what to dye. I have so many white sheets because I used to get the rejects from a hotel (rips, stains, etc, just cut around them), and they're mostly cotton, so they should work with normal dye. Pro tip: natural fibres like cotton, linen, rayon, wool, etc, take better to dye, where polyester/nylon/acrylic (all plastic based) need a special kind of dye. If you have a polyester cotton blend fabric, to get a really dark vivid colour, sometimes I've seen people get both the types of dye and do it twice, but results can vary, sometimes you just end up with a pastel.
As someone who has made a lot of clothes and costumes, it actually does get quite pricey. Especially if you are factoring in the time to make. For example, say it takes you 3 hours to make a piece, I think you should also be factoring in 3 hours of minimum wage into the cost of that item. So that ends up making it more expensive then Shein. So I think it depends on how you value your time and the balance between ethical and cost efficiency on which route to take.
I think the point is that it's a hobby done in hobby time, which is time you give for the feeling of enjoyment and not for monetary gain. Like making earrings while watching tv, as she said. etc! But yes, if you're doing it as work to make profit, then totally agree.
@@deehowe8650 that’s true, fabric can get expensive, but most things I have gotten from Shein when I use to shop there are such poor quality fabric wise! It’s good when you can use coupons for Joanns or Michaels or thrift fabric or repurpose.
The gag is… the shein ad prior to this 😂 I loveeee the masterpieces you created. A sewing machine giveaway??? You are an Angel. You have inspired me to start sewing/ any other hobby. Thank you mia
Mia, you are so generous! Thank you for inspiring us! I already have a wonderful sewing machine from my grandma, and I use it all the time. It’s really great that you’re going to help other people get there own machines!
Mia is making the World a better place! 🌍🌎🌏 A person who is encouraging you to making something instead of buying something is something that I admire so much! Thank you Mia ! 🌸☀️ This video has so much meaning behind I love it so much!
Mia, you're the reason i want to start making clothes for myself, as a plus sized girl its soooo hard to find EXACTLY what i want because its either double the price as the non plus size version or it simply doesnt exist. i just need time and a sewing machine 😭😭 also you should get those products from shein and compare quality!? maybe
So awesome! It would be really interesting if you also factored in the amount of time spent per item x minimum wage (or living wage if they don’t match) in Canada. One of the big criticisms of fast fashion beyond the environmental impact is the fact that the people actually sewing the clothing are paid next to nothing so it would be cool to see your own time spent factored into the cost!
This is a really neat idea! I know for a few items she mentioned approximately how long it took to made, but I would have loved to know the exact timing and for each of the pieces.
I love that you’ve been diving more into the DIY life! I’m a DIYer myself, and it’s empowering to see women knowing they can do anything they set their minds to.
I'm so incredibly proud of you, Mia! I can hardly believe how much your sewing skills have improved, and I love your attitude about perfection. You're an awesome human for all you do, from encouraging newbies to discussing ethics. Keep on being you!
Polymer clay artist here: I HIGHLY recommend selling some of your polymer clay things on the same site as your stickers! You're talented and I think your fans would love to have some of your creations
Amused at seeing a Shein ad on this video…and amazed at Mia’s self confidence on her sewing. My doubts hold me back from my sewing goals. I need to watch this whenever I start a new project. Mia said I can do it!
so cool to see you grow as a seamstress. the red dress looked just so nice. i would enjoy it so much to see you revamping something like burgschneider/(authentic) medieval clothing into something you could wear everyday or as a nice costume
As an older gal on a lower income who would love to sew my own clothes but can't see to do by hand sewing, this is a great giveaway opportunity. Thanks for the ideas. The handmade earrings are also amazing and fun. Thanks, Mia, for doing the work you do and posting it for us.
As a Hobby-addict myself I support Mia's advise to "practise and keep on". My first knit and crochet projects were laughable. Fast foward a couple of years of very enjoyable hobby and I'm really proud of my garments. And the joy of gifting hand-made things is one of the best feelings ever
I'm a crafter/sewer/quilter, learned to sew as a child from my mom. I remember making my first potholder at the park with other kids with the loops and was so embarrassed I hid it under my shirt .
Mia, you are so thoughtful and loving toward your subscribers! Doing a future giveaway of a sewing machine can change someone's life ❤❤ Thank you for being you!
I find it so cute that Mia always tries to shape the clay with her fingers whenever she does jewlery when most etsy and other sellers usually just use clay cutters 😅

@@smpeace2683 Same :(
Also "stealing" designs is fine when you're making it for yourself. The problem comes when you're trying to sell it as your own.
Yeah I saw she in steal a design from this one lady. She does a lot of yoga and has workout prices and shein stole from her.
@@sophiesstopmotionstudios4927 shein steals from literally every small designer, there are soooo many cases like that
Its how they get their promo pics. They buy the original and take professional photos or even worse just copy the ones from the original seller. So when you go online and see the pic you think its going to be much higher quality than it is.
and making money from it
@@sophiesstopmotionstudios4927 omg yesss the blogilates girl. I felt so horrible for her because they ripped her style down to the entire marketing style
Just a note - as someone who does work at Fabricland, you should always wash your fabric first before sewing with it. Some of the materials shrink after the initial wash, it also helps with those unknown stains and marks. :)
Good to know! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I never knew that. I haven't sewn anything yet.
And iron it, please.
Only linen, cotton and natural fabrics, polyester does not shrink much
"Making things yourself is cheaper" can be true, but only if you have the equipment to do so, specifically the sewing machine. You can get a cheap one, but they don't work well (in most cases) HOWEVER, a lot of libraries now have a "library of things" you can rent! One sort of local library by me has a ton of crafting tools and a quilting sewing machine! And it's completely free to use if you have a library card.
Omg that's so cool!!!
I wish this existed in my country as well!
It's not cheaper. I takes a lot of time and effort. It's worth only if it's your job or a side hustle or a hobby you enjoy
That's what my point was; I should've written it out in a better way
I feel like a proud parent watching Mia. Her skills have developed massively over the years watching her. Amazing work.
I remember when hot glue and staples were her go to 🤣 she's definitely come a long way lol

Yes I am so glad she thinks of us despite never having to struggle to find clothes (at least in that way)
If nobody has said it yet, I don’t feel like you have to match colors for projects like this if you like other colors more. This could be a fun series!
True, but it works to make a strong point for the video.
It's inspiring to see how confident you've become in your abilities in the last couple years! Good for you, Mia!
May God bless you all and your loved ones and have a blessed day, night and life!✝️💞.❤
She's so talented!!
The urge I have to fight to not pick up sewing as a new hobby is ridiculous😅, but I’m glad I get to live vicariously through these videos💜
Thrifting is so much better & even cheaper prices.
that's exactly how i feel about the fimo clay 😅
it is addicting. Now I have so many fabric notions and fabric itself that I will never use it all in this lifetime.
Do it!!!! I started last year and it's so satisfying :D And now I can modify my existing clothes to suit my taste better
Can we just mention how she always totally underrates her sewing and creative skills? This girl is so talented in many ways and so modest and sweet
I bought mine for $25 off of FB marketplace, some people sell them for cheap bc they want to get rid of it
There are libraries (at least in Australia) where you can rent a sewing machine for free! You just book in how long you need and use the sewing machine room 🤗 Love this idea btw of making your clothes instead of giving the company more money 🫶
Thats awesoooome
Their exist sewing cafes to. Atleast in belguim and the Netherlands. You can sew there on any sewing machine they have available:)
Love the idea. Not everyone owns a sewing machine and they can be quite expensive and take space. Can be a good start to rent one
Really?? Where about? I'm an international student in Australia (2023 is my 4th year here) and I didn't know about this! That's so cool.
You can also look for maker spaces in your area, they often have sewing machines that are free to use or just a couple bucks per hour
Ngl, I'll be doing this as of tomorrow. Can't wait
*just cause I might not be good at something, doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it* 🥰
Same same 💚💚
The way I look at things is, I have two hands that are capable of performing the function of any task any other person can do, and a brain the same size as everyone else too.
My family got a similar machine on the side of the road once for free 😮
How could I tell if it’s in good working condition or if I’d have trouble sourcing parts if it broke down? Do you have any ideas
Also, not sure if it exists everywhere but try looking up “[your area] sewing forum” or something similar. If a local group exists, someone there will be looking to get rid of a machine or know the best spots to find one. Plus, they know their stuff and can tell you if any parts are broken/hard to repair.
Great point! I got mine from Mercari for less than $100.! I also see them all the time at thrift stores and a couple at bargain stores like Ollie's.
I bought a nice serger off Facebook marketplace 😊
That was my first thought
Probably all brands nowadays don’t pay their workers or underpay them, you just discovered capitalism
yeah but is made in another country
like some USA say "bc clothes in Shien are so cheap 10-15 dolars" but that is the normal price of clothes in my country, I shop in Shien just for style on those expensive plus size hard to make clothes
ok, let's talk about it
It's my favorite style I've seen her do so far. Her hair was the first thing I noticed when I clicked on the video. Absolutely love it!
I like that she is keeping it short, it suits her. Those waves are 🔥 so I hope they’re here to stay.
yep her and Mama Maples got it going on
She’s such an amazing person, no other TH-camr would have added the bit about needing a sewing machine, but to then try and give us the opportunity to win one!? Saint Mia, y’all
As a plus size girl who literally gets anxiety when I shop anywhere, I really appreciate this video. It really gives me the confidence to make my own fashionable clothes. The amount of times I find things that I love and have to put back because my size isn't available is so sad.
Just lose the weight, it's healthier all along. That's what I did.
my experience is definitely not the same as plus size but as an l/xl it’s already hard to find cute pieces or even ones that fit properly. i hate that the fashion industry is like this
@badlyplanned9259 I don't disagree with your point of view.
Because getting anxious instead of actually losing the weight is definitely healthier. 😂
I'm always so happy and proud when I see mia doing sewing videos now. She really did come a long way from hot glueing.
WE DON'T NEED SHEIN ANYMORE!!!!! thank you for saying this!!! it makes me so sad when i see that there are STILL influencers who rep shein :(
I feel so conflicted about this, my colleague literally told me today she's saving up to buy a bunch of stuff on shein.
I need shein.😂

Yes!
Yes yes yes ! I've been doing the same the past few weeks of extra fabrics and I made so much more cute stuff that I actually wear and customized 🥰❤️
@@Lesuhlee I've never used those! But I'm sure there are videos on TH-cam that show you a difference in the two :)
wow tracing your clothes to make new ones is such a simple idea but it has really inspired me. I recently got a sewing machine but I have been in paralysis deciding how to make a piece of clothing. I can't wait now!!! Love the video.
Skirts are the easiest place to start.
You could buy a block pattern (it is a basic dress pattern), and then you can alter it how you want.
Use inexpensive fabric. That way the most expensive thing "wasted" is your time, and you can chalk it up to a learning experience/prototype phase.
Practise, practise, practise. Good luck and have fun.
@@andreas_adventures but please add seam allowance when you trace it

The evolution of Mia's sewing skills has been incredible to watch! And it's great to promote these skills, especially now in this difficult economy.
Mia, you are great. Not because you are perfect but because you try and are always honest. And that makes you AMAZING!
Same! I every now and then make a piece, but only if I have a really good day and nothing planned 😅
You could buy a block pattern (it is a basic dress pattern), and then you can alter it how you want.
Saaame but I think instead of making things from scratch I'm going to use mine to upcycle clothes I don't use. Then it's just hemming and taking in 😊
every time i watch one of your videos i think of how proud mama maples must be of you & your character.. you’re simply the nicest creator i’ve ever watched.. thank you for being so kind to us!!
Honestly, sewing the viral SKIMS dresses would be a great video, the silhouette is soo simple all you need to do is find a high quality fabric!
I love how personalized and thoughtful Mia’s giveaways are!
It just appalls me everytime how talented Mia is!
appalled: dismayed or horrified.
huh? lol
Mia this is a great video idea. I love how sustainable this is without bring shameful or accusatory. Just giving people motivation to do it yourself.
Love all the new hairstyles you are doing now. Can I say how much we love that you are always so considerate and think of your subscribers? Your sewing skills have drastically improved and these pieces are pretty spot on.
LMAAAOOO an hour ago I went to your channel to rewatch your sewing vids, just a sewing mood today! This was *chefs kiss* PERFECT timing
Mia, you are by far the most considerate TH-camr out there. You really think deep about your viewers. The red dress was my favorite!!
love this. I am trying to figure out ways to alter clothes I don't wear anymore into new pieces instead of buying new, so this was awesome inspiration
I love how you're spreading the word about the shady things Shein is up to! And then turning it into something this positive❤
If you’re doing that math, then it makes shein even worse for the workers there.
I have no clue or time to make clothes like that 😅
And fabric is crazy expensive especially for Beautiful fabric.
@@deehowe8650 that’s true, fabric can get expensive, but most things I have gotten from Shein when I use to shop there are such poor quality fabric wise! It’s good when you can use coupons for Joanns or Michaels or thrift fabric or repurpose.
A moment of appreciation for the effort gone into this video, and the editing 👏🏻🎬👏🏻🙏🏼💃🏻
You make me want to get into sewing!!
The gag is… the shein ad prior to this 😂 I loveeee the masterpieces you created. A sewing machine giveaway??? You are an Angel. You have inspired me to start sewing/ any other hobby. Thank you mia
I love the production of this video, well done, MIa :) and your skills are improving more and more every video
Mia, you are so generous! Thank you for inspiring us! I already have a wonderful sewing machine from my grandma, and I use it all the time. It’s really great that you’re going to help other people get there own machines!
Mia is making the World a better place! 🌍🌎🌏
A person who is encouraging you to making something instead of buying something is something that I admire so much! Thank you Mia ! 🌸☀️
This video has so much meaning behind I love it so much!
Mia, you're the reason i want to start making clothes for myself, as a plus sized girl its soooo hard to find EXACTLY what i want because its either double the price as the non plus size version or it simply doesnt exist.
i just need time and a sewing machine 😭😭
also you should get those products from shein and compare quality!? maybe
I’d love to see Mia do an all handmade Christmas next year. ❤❤❤
You’re so talented Mia!!
I use to love sewing and this makes me want to get into sewing again
It really brought me joy 🥲
That jumpsuit is awsome! I even like how the colour came out it gives the fabric more interest.
Doing a future giveaway of a sewing machine can change someone's life ❤❤
Thank you for being you!
I wish I had more time to do stuff like learning to make my own clothes 😭 maybe little by little I can do it, but I love this
I really love this video!
I seriously need more sewing videos. It's so relaxing to watch her sew.
I find it so cute that Mia always tries to shape the clay with her fingers whenever she does jewlery when most etsy and other sellers usually just use clay cutters 😅
I just imagined Mia being a pro sew-er and making Matoshi dresses ALL BY HERSELF😮🎉
