Great video with some series I loved! - Potter, Bartimaeus, Barsetshire.
You've given me some great new ideas.

The way that Holmes will investigate anything is one of the delights of the series, you never know if things are going to take a darker turn or just inspire curiosity. I also love the few where he manages to solve the crime before it is even committed (I think the Red Headed League perhaps?)
Poirot of course is a delight, and I think I had a fairly similar experience with Harry Potter in that I would rank it higher now than I ever would have done when the first books were coming out. I think there's a lot to be said for its cultural power, being able to talk to almost anyone who grew up in a similar time period about it that makes it more interesting. Likewise with His Dark Materials I also missed most of the bigger messages and just enjoyed the adventure the first time I read them.
I had completely forgotten about the Bartimaeus booms but they were real favourites for my brother and me, I loved the footnotes.

Holmes is just amazing! As is Poirot. I feel like for both Harry Potter and His Dark Materials there is so much you get out on later readings, and the whole world they both create is so rewarding.

After you made a video talking about the Cicero Series, I read them and really enjoyed them. It got me into reading historical fiction written in Roman times. I also love both Trollope’s chronicles and I’m still patiently waiting for Rothfuss third book. I’m a fan of the Game of Thrones books but I have a feeling Martin will never finish the story. I read the Liveship Traders Trilogy and that’s one series that I highly recommend. Loving to see your videos every day, what a treat! :)

I highly recommend his books. I'd suggest staring with the Barsetshire Chronicles - some of the Palliser novels have characters in from the Barsetshire Chronicles and spoil some of their endings (mostly, The Prime Minister, Palliser number 5, spoils Doctor Thorne, Barsetshire book 3.)

  • @CarolynsReadingRamblings
    @CarolynsReadingRamblings 5 ปีที่แล้ว

This was fantastic! I loved hearing your list and your reasons. I have 4 favorite book series. My favorite adult series is of course the Barsetshire series and I just kept nodding my head through your praise and analysis of it :D. My favorite children's/sort of YA series is Harry Potter. My favorite decidedly YA series is the Principles of Love by Emily Franklin. Lastly, my favorite unique book series is the Griffin and Sabine series by Nick Bantock, I say "unique" because each book is like a cross between an adult picture book, an epistolary work, and a work of art, plus the stories fit into multiple genres. I also have several series that I absolutely love but am not finished with yet so feel like my opinion isn't fully formed. Those series are-Miss Marple, Poirot, and Tommy and Tuppence(all by Agatha Christie of course), the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley, the Anne books by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Shades of London series by Maureen Johnson, the Glamourist Histories by Mary Robinette Kowal, the Middle Earth books by Tolkien, A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, Discworld by Terry Pratchett, and the Poldark books by Winston Graham (I am probably forgetting SEVERAL and may come back to edit this lol). Also this video reminds me to tell you that I am hoping to read Name of the Wind this month and I fully expect/hope it will be on my 2019 favorites list :D. Sorry for the crazy long comment, you know I can run on sometimes lol, wonderful video!

I haven't read many series but am trying to finish the Barchester novels this year and have also started the Palliser series (with the last novel... I need to go back to the beginning!). I also love the Poirot novels a lot, and enjoyed the later ones that are supposed to be not as good.
I don't read that many series but my favorites include The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years Later and The Vicomte de Bragelonne by Alexandre Dumas and historical detective mysteries such as the Nicolas Le Floch stories by Jean-François Parot (they are brilliant and beautifully written). I'm also enjoying the C.J. Sansom Tudor series.

This made me reflect that the series I have read are usually genre fiction, mostly detective novels, fantasy or favourites from childhood. The Barsetshire Chronicles and Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga are the obvious exceptions. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster books are there to cheer me up when life is sad. Is a trilogy a series? If so then my current favourite has to be Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall. I am itching for the final part.

Nice book video--I look forward to each, especially this week. You don't seem to comment much on the technical quality of the writing. As a parent, I try to guide my daughter toward books which have a higher level of grammatical structure and vocabulary. When I picked up a Harry Potter book for the first time and scanned it for quality writing style, I was not impressed. Of course, my daughter still got sucked in :-)

@@katiejlumsden Sorry for being argumentative, but please indulge a quote from the Guardian website:
'Here, from page 324 of The Order of the Phoenix, to give you a typical example, are six consecutive descriptions of the way people speak. "...said Snape maliciously," "... said Harry furiously", " ... he said glumly", "... said Hermione severely", "... said Ron indignantly", " ... said Hermione loftily". Do I need to explain why that is such second-rate writing?'
I try to guide my 12-year old daughter towards books with a higher level of literary quality, in the hope she will absorb better word, phrase, and sentence usage.
Low quality prose can be enjoyed, just as text-speak can be profound. Technical and legal writing, with its need for clarity, benefits from low level vocabulary and short simple sentences. Still, there is surely value in higher echelons of literary craft.

@@HAL-nt6vy this is a list of Katie's favourites not educational recommendations. But if you do want advice about encouraging your daughter to grow up as a discerning reader, you may achieve your aim best by allowing her to read widely and with enjoyment. The only thing that you might want to help her avoid is getting stuck long term in a narrow genre cul de sac to the exclusion of all else.

Thank you for the suggestions. Much required reading in life is not for enjoyment, so we must be good at that too. The words we hear/see affect our personal vocabulary, phrases, and writing style. So, SOME parental direction seems advisable.
Yeah, as a young boy I read nearly every western paperback novel in existence. My parents should have said, "for every Zane Gray or Louis L'Amour, pick one of these."
