    I never in a million years would have thought I could have gotten through big novels, especially Dickens. But thanks to this channel, I have seen that it could be possible, especially with audio books, and now I am about to finish my Dicken's project (all the Charles Dickens novels) started last December. Wow! Thank you Katie!!

    Your enthusiasm lights up the screen, and your reading matter is positively tenacious. I too am a fervent fan of big Victorian novels - works where one can submerge themselves and get lost in another time. Thank you.

    The biggest book in my library and TBR list is 18th century…… Clarissa by Samuel Richardson….. can’t wait to read it but still building my arm strength…. 😂

    My favorite is Wives and Daughters, which I read for the first time in Victober last year. I am about a quarter of the way through Lorna Doone now and am really enjoying it. I end up putting off big books for ages, because they are big...and then end up loving them after I finally get through them. Some day I hope to learn my lesson and pick them up more quickly!

    i am definitely intimidated by the big victorian books. I already struggle with modern chunkers. I have a few big classics from the 19th century and earlier but am so hesitant to read them because I'm worried it'll feel like a slog. Still, if I ever do get around to finishing Don Quixote I'll be proud of the fact it'll be the longest book I've ever read surpassing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. And it being from the 1600s (though the translation is from the 2000s) is just icing on the cake.

      As long as you don't also have a fascination with certain machines, Madame, I'll feel safe enough to reply.

    KL: I love your videos, but I am amazed (as young as you are) that you've read so many LONG books. It's quite impressive. And from the fact you physically have the books, I'm guessing you (mostly?) read them rather than listen to them.
    I don't think I am a book snob, but I've never listened to an audio-book. I am old fashioned and actually enjoy engaging with the text.
    Perhaps you might do a video on the ethics (and snobbery) of reading and whether readers do (or do not) look down upon "listeners"? I suppose it really doesn't matter, as you still have to put in the time.
    As always, EXCELLENT content, and many good recommendations.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read a lot of very long books as a teenager, strangely enough, and read them physically (didn't get into audiobooks until I was older) but have reread a lot of longer books on audiobook in recent years, and there are some very long books (like The Count of Monte Cristo) I have read more recently and only on audiobook. I love audiobooks and think they definitely count as reading, and audiobooks probably make up a third of my reading these days. I made a video about reading formats ages ago - th-cam.com/video/AmFY1rkXTho/w-d-xo.html - thought I can't remember if I talked much about people looking down on audiobook listeners. I think most people I know of my generation definitely think of audiobooks as reading, and I know a lot of people who listen to audiobooks and love them. Audiobook sales are growing hugely at the moment and have been for the last few years, interestingly.

      @@katiejlumsden Thanks for the info and insight about audio books, and for sharing more of your personal story. I suspected that audio books were a big growth industry.
      My brother's young girlfriend listens all the time to them while driving. I'm too easily distracted. My spouse says all men have one-track minds, and that women naturally have to be able to multi-task. When I drive (as bad as I am at it), I need to pay attention to MY DRIVING.
