How troubling and beautiful at the same time.

Teraoka is such a terrific painter. All his works are so vivid, moving and full of meaning. I am continuously amazed by the empathy and thought he displayed through his art back in the day when AIDS was a taboo fueled by fear and stereotypes. Simply love him and his work!

Wonderful work as always. Thank you Smarthistory for rekindling my love of art history. The tertiary institutions I studied at had put me off for years. There's a lot to be said for plain precise language in communicating these works and you all have done so admirably. It's always a treat to see a video of yours come up in my subscriptions. I wish you all success.

Omg ... I saw his work in 1990 (?) in The Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati! Surely was very ahead of time...the subjects and the frankness!

I think this is the second screen I've seen so far, but it's definitely the more impactful and gripping of the two...
There was so much to see that I didn't even catch until it was pointed out (granted, choking down breakfast was a distraction): the lesions, her baby I could barely make out. I still don't know what the thing dangling from her wrist is, etc. The green-blue eyeshadow made me think of anime, which is appropriate, but even in this you can see it: 😨
I just think of madness... It's very sad.

What about the swimming goggles? Are they supposed to be condoms - protection against the infected seemen waves?

As I understand it, the woman had been a swimmer and the googles are there to refer to her life before.

Japanese pearl divers traditionally wore swim goggles. I believe there is some underlying symbolism in that that wasn't part of the discussion. The full moon and head of the baby both appear like large pearls.

Gosh ! You guys can talk !
And why no comment on the swimming goggles ?

We mentioned the googles. It is thought to be a reference to the mother having been a swimmer.
