- James Kalm tries to stays hydrated, and heads to Chelsea to record a double venue exhibition of Rita Ackermann. Titled “Splits” and “Splits: Printing /
Painting”. Ackermann presents a new series of large painting, developing her motif of snuggling young female characters, as angels, dancers or pedestrians. “Splits” refer to the artist’s device of dividing the picture’s composition horizontally into three “screens”. Pictorial density and painted facture emphasize these divisions, and the contrasts are not only material but stylistic, referring to art historical precedents, and our deep vs shallow perceptions of mass media. This program was recorded July 17, 2024. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Thank you Kate! ❤
Good show
THANK YOU KATE!!!! Thanks for this James! If I ever make it to New York to be an artist...
Wow, these are very different from the last showing of paintings at HW aren't they? The drawing and paint handling are masterful. It's easy to find comparisons to DeKooning, Cecily Brown, Baselitz, maybe Henry Darger. That's fine but I also hope Ackermann will trust her gifted hand and her eye to take paintings into territory all her own. Thanks james!
Thx Kate 🤙🌞
On the James Kalm scale (1-10) these are a 9+. Thanks James and Rita. And Kate.
2 in 1! you get to enjoy her sensible line work with her drawings, plus that powerful Split where you got the oil paint's powerful colors....I never heard of this artist. Interesting works no doubt.
