A really great way to free up the metal balls in the bottle is by moving a magnet around the outside as a way to mix the polish without too much shaking
Little fun fact (fun to me 😅) : heptane is mostly present in top coats, usually not in regular polishes. So the beauty secrets would be useful i guess for both top coats and creme formulas but yeah avoid in glitter polishes. I missed your 101 videos !! Keep eeeem coming 😍
You asked for product recommendations, and my #1 go-to is a mini-vortex mixer. My husband paints miniatures with acrylic paints. He bought a LabGenius MI0101001 Mini-Vortex Mixer from Amazon a year of so ago. It's pricy, but after using it for several months, I can't imagine not having it. You only need to hold the bottle of polish to the soft rubber of the machine for thirty seconds to a minute and it mixes the nail polish so thoroughly! I LOVE it.
I just did this yesterday! I had no idea how 3 ingredient thinner effects glitter polish, but luckily I have the OPI thinner because that's all I could find locally. I successfully restored 2 textured Essie glitters that are over 10 years old.
Oh lol. I've been throwing my thinner into all my glitters for ages, with no idea I could be doing harm. Just checked and it's a two-ingredient bottle, phew! This was so informative! 😊
@sanjabojovic7440 OPI thinner is safe for most nail polishes. OPI thinner only has butyl acetate and ethyl acetate, which are the ingredients to look for. Off the top of my head, KB Shimmer and Holo Taco's thinners are also these same ingredients, so they would be fine too. Heptane is the one that stands out as damaging to glitters (dissolves plastic, which most glitter is, as I recall), and acetone is bad to use as a thinner in general. Don't use thinners with those to be on the safe side.
Thanks so much for your tips. I spent today restoring some old and very nostalgic nail polishes from my teen years that had thickened. Nail polish can be sentimental to me as it takes me back to certain places and even helps me relive great memories. Restoring my nail polishes has taken me back down memory lane ♥ thanks again
Love the KB Shimmer thinner. Several of my neons, especially glow in the dark ones, get thick easily. KBS thinner works wonders! I have been apprehensive about thinners in glitter, and now will use this when needed. Thanks, Kelli!! As always, your videos are informative, clear, and very enjoyable!
Omigosh. Thank you for this video. I have the KB shimmer thinner already because it works for their reflective glitter and the other day I tried it on my favorite color club glitter that had gone dry but no success. I almost threw it out. But it turns out I just needed to add more and keep shaking it. Now it’s back to it’s beautiful glitter magic. Yay!!
Kelli, thanks for the great tip about Heptane. I used Beauty Secrets thinner in two OPI polishes; Merry Crimson (has slight shimmer), and an old bottle of OPI Red. Both were ruined, they developed black clumps. So maybe avoid Heptane in general. Thanks for listing other thinners like the OPI, do not contain heptane. Suggestion for content: Would love more color comparisons in your swatch videos. Thanks for your great videos.
I use the same thinner, it works with everything! Even incredibly glooped up quick dry top coats, I love it! another cool trick to free up the mixing balls is to use a magnet (like the ones for magnetic polishes). You can also move the balls around in the bottle with the magnet to unclump some stubborn spots. otherwise, I'd love a book review series, I love to read as well and I am sure you'd help me discover new authors/genres.
Destroyed my OPI mad as a hatter and my CG Party Hearty years ago after using a thinner with heptane in it :'( was a terrible mistake I learned from LOL. Hopefully this will help others from making the same mistake.
Oh boy, when you said you shouldn't use nail polish thinner on glitter polish I panicked because I have definitely done that. But then I looked at my thinner and mine is the OPI thinner so no issues :) Good tips!
Polish Lab Rat had a great hack for cleaning nail polish bottles by folding the lint free wipe 2x and then cutting a small hole in the middle. She then soaked it in acetone, unfolded it so the hole in the middle opens then place the brush through the hole and close the bottle to clean the inside of the brush top and outside the polish bottle at the same time. I then take it off and clean off any remaining polish on the bottle which is so minimal. This made cleaning bottles so much less of a pain.
Wow I did not know that the beauty secrets thinner would ruin my glitter nail polishes! I've been using it to thin down some of my Holo Taco glitter nail polishes and while it worked initially, the bottles are all gloopy and unusable right now =( Sucks that it was because of the heptane. Thankfully there was only a little polish left in each bottle. But at least now I know how to avoid this in the future. Thanks Kelli!
This video was perfectly timed! I’ve been looking into getting some thinner over the last couple of days to rescue some of my crusty bottles (which are mainly glitters / Zoya pixie dusts). I was just going to buy any old cheap stuff thinking they were all the same. Hopefully I can revive them all without ruining them! 🙏🏻
I’ve only seen a couple of makeup videos from you but watch lots of those type… you definitely could do makeup! And I think you’d find lots of people like your style of eye makeup!
I've found dripping the thinner on to the brush and letting it drip down into the bottle to work really well, or carefully on to the neck of the bottle if it's really crusty around there. I use the Orly thinner and it hasn't ruined any glitter polishes, as far as I can tell at least. Wanted to check what ingredients are in it but can't find any information about it. Thank you for explaining how thinner works so well, it makes so much more sense now that you'd want a thinner with similar chemicals to your nail polish
Thank you for all this info. I do have OPI thinner and I checked the ingredients and you are right it only has 2 ingredients so I will most definitely use it on my glitter polishes

I didn't know there were different types of thinners when I bought mine. Thankfully though, I just checked and it's the OPI two-ingredient variety, so I got the right stuff by accident!
I'm sooo thankful that you made this video! I have bought every single nail polish that Holo Taco has come out with and as you know, those glitters get thicc.... I had no idea that certain thinners weren't good for glitter polishes... I have a ton of money invested in my collection. I bought the OPI thinner and thank God it only has the two ingredients because I've used the crap out of it in my glitter polishes lol. I just love watching your videos!!
So glad I haven’t ruined my polishes! I use OPI nail lacquer thinner which does in fact only have butyl acetate and ethyl acetate. I purchase it from Sally’s. Thank you Kelli!!!
I just discovered your channel and I've just been bingewatching ur videos for the last 3 days 😆 they're addictive! I LOVE the nail art you do, you explain it very thoroughly and its easy to follow along while also tweaking anything u want to make it ur own♡

Oh gosh thank you Sharon! I'm so honored you enjoyed those 😄 maybe I'll do more in the future! I've got a combo eyeshadow/nail polish review coming next week!
Double checked which thinner I picked up & yup, OPI & yup it's only got those 2 acetates! Woohoo! Yeah, I'd used it to help out a few of my older glitter polishes & it's made a HUGE difference!
This was very interesting cus I typically don't have glitters, but lately I do because I've opened up to collecting other colors for seasonal wears. Thank you for this informative video! ☺️
Trying using jojoba oil on your cuticles several times a day, it made a big difference on my brittle nails, also you should try a nail hardener for a couple of weeks.
thanks for this video! I used the sally hansen for a couple of my glitter polishes, so when the glitter gets sparse I will know why! I will make sure to get the 2 ingredient option next time I need to thin glitter polish!
Amazing what a bit of nail polish thinner and patience can do! I had an old duochrome polish that was just as solid as that China Glaze polish of yours that I saved in just the same way. I never knew heptane interfered with glitter though. Thanks for the tip!
Watching this video makes me so happy I got a mixer/percolator 2 years ago because it makes the mixing so much easier and faster. I got it when I was trying to save some polishes so I could organize my collection and it’s a great tool to have.

Thank you for this!! I will definitely have to get that specific kind of thinner, I’ve been able to keep up with most of my collection but I have at least a few more difficult glitters and textured polishes ❤️
The Mavala thinner is another good option as it only contains ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, they're also vegan and cruelty free which is nice! The bottles in my drugstore are quite small though not sure if they come in larger sizes.
Thanks Kelli…now I know what I need to add to my polishes, I only have 2 creams all the rest are holo, glitter or flakie. The other thinner would have destroyed my new polishes ❤

I had the Orly thinner for a while but I think my bottle was not good because it evaporated quite quickly. The product itself was great though. Worked like a charm!
Hi Kelli! I actually just recently purchased the KB Shimmer thinner, so I’m glad to hear you approve of it. I have a question about thinning top coats. Most top coats don’t come with mixing balls (I assume to prevent air bubbles). If you have a top coat that’s getting thin towards the end of the bottle, do you recommend adding mixing balls when you put in the polish thinner, or is it best to just shake the heck out of it as-is? Thank you so much for your content - it brightens my day every time you have a new video or vlog!
In one of her old videos she says she doesn’t recommend nail polish thinner in top coats - instead she combines a new bottle of the same brand/type of top coat with the old bottle to keep it perpetually “refreshed”! But idk if there is any risk associated with putting balls in top coats, I kinda assume brands don’t use them for a reason, but idk what that reason could be!
I thin my top coats, and so far haven't had any issues with it. I don't add mixing balls, but instead let it sit with thinner for a bit, then shake the bottle and wait a while, until I see no more air bubbles. Sometimes I'll roll the bottle between my hands instead, and then let it sit for a while afterwards.
I do use thinner in top coat if it's getting really thick but usually I'll just gently roll it until it's incorporated - it takes a while but it's worth it imo because then you can use it immediately without bubbles!!
Kelli you definitely need to do some make content. I am always impressed with your colors on your eyes. I’m not sure I could do all the bold colors but I would fore-sure be interested in learning from you because you always look beautiful. Also, I am also interested in your lip colors you where with certain looks. You have some of the prettiest shades if lip colors. Please Share more makeup with us. You will do GREAT!
@@KelliMarissa i guess we'll find out with time! I wonder formula wise why they would add more ingredients to a thinner if it wasnt needed in the first place? Why make a 3 ingredient thinner when 2 works?
One thing I always wonder is how to use the bottom of nail polish. I hate to waste, but the last bits are always so hard to get. Can you do a video about this?
I have the orly one and it’s great but I feel like it definitely needs more than what the bottle says. I usually end up needing 4-6 for a polish that’s just starting to turn south. The bottle lasts a long while though!
Definitely need to get this nail thinner just in case 👀👀👀 Very informative video, thanks Kelli ❤️❤️❤️ Love the look 💙💙💙💙 Yes to makeup content, I would always love when you would post makeup stuff. I would also appreciate book reviews, that sounds good to me 👀👀👀
Thinners are great. I find that I thin the working bottles of my preferred base and top coats about once a month to keep them close to their original consistency. It saves a whole lot of hassle.
I realize this video is several months old now, but I've only just discovered your channel and I have to say I'm bingeing like my life depends on it!! 🤣 Please keep the content coming because not only are you an excellent resource, but you are genuinely a pleasure to watch/listen to...and this is coming from someone who I'm certain is WAY outside your target demographic (I'm an ol' gal in years, but still feel like a girl in my mind!) On to my actual question: does the heptane precaution also apply to "shimmer" polish? I've always assumed their shimmer comes from a glitter-type substance, only much smaller & finer, but perhaps I'm wrong...could shimmer polishes actually get their gleam from pigment rather than plasticized particles like glitter, and therefore be immune to the heptane damage?? Thanks, in advance, for the info!
This made me realise I might have some nail polishes that need thinning out … lots of long sessions doing nail art and leaving the caps on loose 😅 Also, I think you could make a video about paint drying and I’d still watch it, LOL. 💛
I also enjoy and learn from your makeup videos! 👏🏽🙏🏽💛 Also would you consider doing favorites videos for plums, berries and my very favourite wine/burgundy categories?
✨Thank you so much! I actually have bottles of Glistening Snow and Party Hearty that could use some restoration. Great information on the different types of thinners. Love your channel & content! Take Care. ✨😊✨
Hey Kelli! Can you do some of your lilac and lavender faves for spring? Great video, would have never known about glitter polishes. Accidentally put thinner in one of my polishes yesterday because I had it out for doing cleanup and had a dumb moment. Thank GAWD it didn’t ruin it because the polish is discontinued.

I had the Orly thinner for a while but I think my bottle was not good because it evaporated quite quickly. The product itself was great though. Worked like a charm!
Ooh well I'm glad the thinner itself was good at least!
@@morgantremble thank you for the advice!

Seche Vite sells a special thinner for their top coat. I use it & no problems.
I do use thinner in top coat if it's getting really thick but usually I'll just gently roll it until it's incorporated - it takes a while but it's worth it imo because then you can use it immediately without bubbles!!
Thank you! This is super useful. I checked the two thinners I have and both have no heptane in it. That was lucky :D
Ooh that is lucky! Which brands do you have? I'll add em to my safe list!
This is so helpful! Need to get some thinner to try this out
I love your book reviews! Some of the only ones I trust - I would love more 😍
I actually found out about the glitter thing only shortly before this video. Informative regardless!
Glad the info is going around haha!!
Glad to learn that not all thinnere are created equal, but Im now very sad that 4 days ago I added the beaty secrets to a glitter polish I love 😭
Oh no! Hopefully it wasn't enough to cause damage haha!
@@KelliMarissa i guess we'll find out with time! I wonder formula wise why they would add more ingredients to a thinner if it wasnt needed in the first place? Why make a 3 ingredient thinner when 2 works?
Great video & super helpful! I have some crusty dusty glitter polishes so it's great to see I can potentially salvage them!
Off to buy kb shimmer, I was using the wrong one for my glitters.thanks for the video
I'm glad you were able to figure this out! Boo. My favorite (Seche Restore) has toluene!:( It also has butyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol.
The most waited video
😄😄😄
Love this eye look!
Such a pretty eye shadow look! 😍
(And I am here for the polish 😄)
I love your book reviews :) definitely would recommend Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series! Sooo good.
Looking out for that starrily review!! 👀👀
Omg super excited about those! Coming soon!!
One thing I always wonder is how to use the bottom of nail polish. I hate to waste, but the last bits are always so hard to get. Can you do a video about this?
Ooh sure I can do a video on that!
I am so hapy that you shared this because I love my KBS Thinner!
It's def a new fave for me!!
I have the orly one and it’s great but I feel like it definitely needs more than what the bottle says. I usually end up needing 4-6 for a polish that’s just starting to turn south. The bottle lasts a long while though!
Thank you for sharing this information, you are the best!😍
Oh you are too kind 😅💙💙💙💙
Definitely need to get this nail thinner just in case 👀👀👀 Very informative video, thanks Kelli ❤️❤️❤️ Love the look 💙💙💙💙 Yes to makeup content, I would always love when you would post makeup stuff. I would also appreciate book reviews, that sounds good to me 👀👀👀
Thank you Kelli!
Does anyone else also have issues with their NP Thinner just evaporating?
I haven't experienced it but I'm not too surprised to hear it - I've heard keeping the bottle in a plastic bag could help!
OPI thinner is the bomb.
Thinners are great. I find that I thin the working bottles of my preferred base and top coats about once a month to keep them close to their original consistency. It saves a whole lot of hassle.
That's a pretty smart tip!!
Well, now I know why some of my glitters went to crapoe! I'll now have to invest in some of that good thinner for the glitters!
Go through your glitters too every so often especially if you're not using them much!
@@donnaharvill8210 Yeah, the chunkier ones love to keep the bottles from properly sealing.
I realize this video is several months old now, but I've only just discovered your channel and I have to say I'm bingeing like my life depends on it!! 🤣 Please keep the content coming because not only are you an excellent resource, but you are genuinely a pleasure to watch/listen to...and this is coming from someone who I'm certain is WAY outside your target demographic (I'm an ol' gal in years, but still feel like a girl in my mind!)
On to my actual question: does the heptane precaution also apply to "shimmer" polish? I've always assumed their shimmer comes from a glitter-type substance, only much smaller & finer, but perhaps I'm wrong...could shimmer polishes actually get their gleam from pigment rather than plasticized particles like glitter, and therefore be immune to the heptane damage??
Thanks, in advance, for the info!
I’m pretty sure that shimmer is micro-fine shifting glitter ✨
So glad I seen this before I picked up a thinner for my Don Deeva polish woo hoo
Yay happy I could help!!
This made me realise I might have some nail polishes that need thinning out … lots of long sessions doing nail art and leaving the caps on loose 😅 Also, I think you could make a video about paint drying and I’d still watch it, LOL. 💛
I also enjoy and learn from your makeup videos! 👏🏽🙏🏽💛
Also would you consider doing favorites videos for plums, berries and my very favourite wine/burgundy categories?
Ooh yes I've been meaning to get into the deeper reds of my favorites!!
I need both of these polishes and more book reviews!!!
Thank you! I'm ordering the Orly today. I'd totally be keen on more make up and book content, even if it's more regularly on your vlog channel ❤
✨Thank you so much! I actually have bottles of Glistening Snow and Party Hearty that could use some restoration. Great information on the different types of thinners. Love your channel & content! Take Care. ✨😊✨
Oh thank you Lana! I'm so glad you found this helpful!
I just ordered kb shimmer thinner! I'm so glad I got the right one for glitter!👍🏽
Ohhh yeah it's a good one for sure!!
Hey Kelli! Can you do some of your lilac and lavender faves for spring?
Great video, would have never known about glitter polishes. Accidentally put thinner in one of my polishes yesterday because I had it out for doing cleanup and had a dumb moment. Thank GAWD it didn’t ruin it because the polish is discontinued.
such good tips! clear and informative, u r great! :)
Thank you so much!!
