I've re-edited the video slightly to respect the wishes of those who did not want to be featured. I'd like to publicly apologise to them.

Your energy was great and still is and that's why people came back again.
Back then there may have been people more polished or tech savvy or just plain had money for better equipment but that didn't mean they were any fun to watch.
That's still the case IMHO about one current channel... 😂😂
Thanks for the reviews. For making us aware of some movies we may not have known about otherwise.
For introducing me to "Ready to Roll" (even if they don't appreciate it) and "Gunboat" through Darkness Falls
And for making my arguments about Prometheus for me in a much clearer way (even if you didn't include the part where David is as stupid as the rest of the crew).
But you're still wrong about The Spirt 😁
      ❤❤❤

25:08 "You might say that style of reviewing hit a wall at a certain point" - cheeky, Mat, very cheeky :D
I have fond memories of watching your early videos in high school so this was a nice trip down nostalgia lane in a way. Takes a lot of humility to assess your own early work in such a frank manner, so well done. :)

Talk about a walk down memory lane! I spent the bulk of my teenage years on a certain site that shall not be named, endlessly rewatching just about every one of your, phelous’, Allison Pregler’s and some…other content creator’s… videos. I can’t believe it’s been 15 years already. Here’s to many many more!

Randomly out of the blue the other day I found my old Kickassia DVD and I ended up watching it in its entirety and you were always one of the stand out performances in that, been watching you since your channel awesome days and its so cool to see how much you've grown as a creator. Looking forward to watching your future content!

What a fun trip down memory lane! I made my first attempt at video content around that time too, so I remember the struggles of Blip, Windows Moviemaker, etc lol. But you've come a LONG way since then, and it has been awesome to see how your channel has evolved over the years. Congrats on the 15 years, and keep up the good work!!👍

Honestly, I still find your old Pluto Nash review more watchable than the one made by that guy who shan't be named. It's especially funny to see you point out that comedy sketches can stop the review in its tracks and you moved away from that early on when a certain someone has infamously done the exact opposite.
I've been following along with your reviews since you were still on Channel Awesome, and this was a good reminder of how far you've come since those days. Here's to fifteen years, and hopefully many more!

Hey Matthew this is gonna be a long comment, but I hope it'll at least put a smile on your face.
I have been a fan of yours since I was 15 years old when I was still new to guys like James & Doug. I was in middle school btw and I'm now 27 *shivers*
Anyway I genuinely remember the first review of yours that I watched and it was The Marine. I really liked your approach to film reviews because you actually gave info about the films unlike others at the time. Which to someone who was new to film criticism and just critiques in general was really helpful. I consistently watched your stuff at the time my favorites being the Rap Critic & Todd in the Shadows crossovers which are the ones I continuously revisit to this very day.
Hell life has been rough the past year and I've just been going through your videos just to give me some kind of nostalgia escape. But when life is more in order I genuinely want to make my own film reviews as well as just videos in general. So in a way you have inspired me to pursue that since you're still doing it.
Keep up the good work and thanks for the memories. Also the part where you were talking about your experiences with CA broke my heart cause I thought you were gonna cry. I'm glad you along many others decided to move on and I'm definitely not taking Doug's advice of recording audio into the camera mic.

I really like how you reflect on the old you and own the mistakes, the bad decisions (and the sexist jokes).
I watched your content quite a lot in the olden days and only recently rediscovered you. It's a rare thing to realize that a content-creator has grown in the same way oneself did. You're a reliable, knowledable voice and you're adding worth to both the discussion and to this part of TH-cam. Happy 15th anniversary and good to see that you're still you, but better :-)

Happy 15th anniversary and I would love to see your reviews for many more.

Wow, that was a trip. I don't think I've seen all of your earlier videos, so it was interesting to see how you've progressed over the years. Anyway, a few random thoughts...
    1. I can't believe That Other Site used you as an example of what not to do when you were still a teenager figuring things out, but I'm also not surprised. I'm glad you got away from them.
    2. I'm glad you eventually dropped the skits and found your own voice. All you need to do is sit in front of a camera and talk, you don't need to rely on any fancy tricks or gimmicks.
    3. You have aged well. I know you don't think so, but I think you look better, now. Also, I'm envious of the fact that you can still fit into a shirt from 15 years ago. Wish I could say the same.
    4. I have said this in the past, but you are one of the few TH-camrs who make me want to watch more movies. I'm actually not the biggest movie person, but your love of film has inspired me to watch more and expand my world a little bit. This is why I have always considered you more of a real film critic and not *just* a TH-camr (no shade to the other TH-camrs I love, of course). You're not in it just for the views, you love film and you want to share that love with the world and it shows. That sets you apart, IMO.
Sorry, I know that was a lot and I hope I haven't said anything that embarrasses you. As long as you keep up the good work, I'm here for it. Thank you for all you've done for us.

Happy 15th anniversary mate. God how time flies. I’ve been watching your videos since I was 12, I’m 18 now. I’ve always loved Bad Movie Beatdown and still watch it often today, and I love your modern content. I never knew you uploaded on BlipTV, thanks for another time capsule to the older Internet days. You’re one of my favorite movie review TH-camrs on this site, and as someone who’s starting to try film reviews on here, I look up to you greatly and appreciate all you’ve done for us.

Congrats on fifteen years Matt, and here's to fifteen more, and fifteen more after that!
One of the things I've really enjoyed in keeping up with your content over the years is how obvious it is that you are a really fantastic person. Watching content I like is cool and all, but when it's made by a smart, thoughtful, and genuinely nice guy, it makes it all the better.
Anyways, congratulations again, and here's to many more videos in the future! :)

I always found your movie reviews to be the most entertaining among the TGWTG crew, and you are one of the last few i still actively watch content from.
Your early beginnings are very nostalgic for me, despite me never watching almost 90% of the material you covered.
This video is a great celebration of how far you've come; but also a good little tutorial for those just getting started on the platform.
Glad to see you still being able to do this and that you still enjoy it after all this time.

My first exposure to your videos was when you took over the Movies in Five Seconds series, and my favorite Bad Movie Beatdown remains Leap Year. I loved how you used your relatively intimate knowledge of regional geography to pick apart how absolutely bonkers and inaccurate the movie was.
Even if I haven't been a regular viewer, I want to thank you for the good times. I miss the "SYMBOLISM" running gag deeply, but it's been a treat to see you mature and grow. Here's to the future, Matthew.

I used to be a huge fan of... that site. I practically lived there, rewatching the videos over and over. (I guess it's worth mentioning that I was going through a major depressive episode at the time, and those funny videos were one of the things keeping me going.) Despite how green you were, I'm pretty sure I was rooting for you from the start, and I still enjoy much of your early content, if only to admire how much you've progressed since then.
When the Equilibrium review came out, I remember thinking that maybe you were being a bit hard on the movie, although you certainly didn't deserve all the hate you were getting. Now that I'm in my 30s, I can see how pretentious the film is without actually saying anything of importance. Good dystopian fiction isn't really about the future - it's about a problem that exists in the present, taken to its logical extreme. A fascist dictatorship would never get rid of people's emotions, because emotions are such a useful tool for controlling people (love for the country, fear of the outsider, that sort of thing). The premise could be used to explore the realities of people whose love has been historically made illegal, such as queer people, interracial couples, disabled people who lose their benefits if they get married. But the movie doesn't do that either, so it just presents an outlandish what-if scenario with no real life application. Which is fine, if that's what you're going for, but it seems to think it's far deeper than it is.
Anyway, excuse the tangent, and congratulations on your milestone.

  • @SupergirlSurprise

Fantastic look back. I was nostalgic for Pluto Nash, not for the film but watching the film at the Ster Century in Norwich at the Castle Mall (Now VUE) and I realize how long it's been. I watched it because it didn't get a big push in the UK and it was in and out of cinemas fast and I love fascinating failures (Just watched Borderlands so I'm still seeing bad movies just to see what happened behind the scenes and how the studio messed it up) so that hit me. Mathew I'm so happy you now have a long career to look back on, I think you have improved in your reviews and you are right! the foundation was always there and your structure works pitch perfect for me. My compliment for you is you are my go to Barry Norman because you give such good backround to the film's production and work it into the review. So congratulations to 15 years and 15 more. 🎉👏👍

A fascinating insight into how everything has changed over those 15 years. I found you through your BMB Steven Segal videos (more people need to dunk on that guy to be honest). Your current reviews are insightful without majorly spoiling the films. Your love of films really shines through.

I’ve been watching your work since I was in high school, and to this day you’ve remained as one of my favourite reviewers on TH-cam. Especially your Projector reviews in which the insight you have to offer (and I of course continue to listen to). While BMB was mainly more leaned towards a comedic format, you still had interesting things to say, and I was also always very impressed with the level of research you went through before analysing a film, including behind the scenes info and even things like watching deleted scenes. And of course, they were funny too!
I have two passions, one of which is Film: watching film reviewers like you sparked that passion.
So I just want to say thank you for being part of that journey!

I was there around the beginning, and I ate up whatever TGWTG was serving. It was new, it was exciting, and it was funny to my 19-year-old brain who hadn't yet developed my critical analysis skills. Ironically, though, it's thanks to your projector series (and Doug's "Old vs. New" videos) that I learned some of those skills, leading me to the My Little Pony analysis community.
Though I don't have the attention span to make videos any more, I still love discussing films and breaking down what makes them work. As for Bad Movie Beatdown itself, some days I do lament that it's been largely left to the dustbin of internet history, as there are some films (I.E: Fat Slags, Epic Movie, etc) that are so truly awful, they deserve, as Basil Fawlty would say, "A damn good thrashing".
All the same, I'm glad forced anger has gone out of fashion, replaced by sincere appraisal and deconstruction. I'm 35 now, and if I can ever get my brain back in gear, I'd love to overcome my rejection-sensitive dysphoria and make reviews again. My friends know how much I buzz when I find something I love!
Keep on trucking, Matt (do you prefer Matthew, Film Brain, Mr. Burk?). It was a pleasure meeting and talking to you at Alcon back in the day, as your humbleness helped me be a bit more aware of peer pressure.

Long time fan here. I'll tell ya, Film Brain, I didn't cotton to you at first, as did a lot of other watchers of TGWTG. Despite all the shit you got, your friends had your back. I remember Linkara had your Dr Insano variant win against all the others to spite those who didn't like you in the Warrior review. You worked really well as a team player too, with your collabs being incredible. As green as you started out, everything got tighter, and your style solidified. I don't remember the first review I watched that made me a fan of BMB, but my favorites are The Ugly Truth, The Happening, Don't Look Down, and, my favorite of all, Bear. You were my favorite of my dad back when I'd show him TGWTG vids. Whereas I'd show him videos of Doug or the Nerd, he'd actively ask me if you uploaded anything new. I know you're ashamed of a lot of the BMB videos you did, as well as the "angry reviewer" shtick, but I still enjoy them and quote them to this day.

This was a fun look back at your career so far. I've been a fan of yours since 2013 with the Texas chainsaw 3D Review. I still get a kick out of your symbolism moments.

Man, I remember watching your videos, Bad Movie Beat Down and Projector around 2012-2014 on THAT site. Crazy it's been so long, feels like only few years ago. I'll be 29 soon and my hair is also beginning to pack it's bags. Best of luck to you, mate.

I have always enjoyed your videos, and you have always been in my top 3 movie reviewers. I especially loved your earlier work where you portrayed a hyper obsessed fan that went so far as it scared people. We all know someone like that, and seeing it in a controlled environment like TH-cam was great. As you have matured, and moved to being a more level headed persona has been a fun watch, and even though I don't see your stuff as much I still put you in the top three because those three are strong enough to never change

It's interesting how the 'review' genre has evolved as most of the earlier reviews were covering the film 'scene by scene' but I particularly liked BMB and Welshy's reviews for going into the 'behind the scenes', deleted scenes etc. While I still enjoy watching old BMB's, I'm certainly more into 'video essays' in general now a days covering good films as well as bad [which is why I enjoy Projector] and the old 'reviewer playing a character' with skits+ cameos feels out of it's time for me [12:00 while I enjoyed Alison's work when she was going by 'Obscurus Lupa' I feel she 'found her own voice when she started 'movie nights'].

It's weird. NC was already going movies from 1994 by 2009, which is 15 years then. Now, 2009 is 15 years and it's become nostalgic itself. Hell, the gap between today and the release of GTA IV (2008) is the same as the gap between the release of GTA: Vice City (2002) and it's setting (1986)!

Matthew, you were one of my favorite reviewers during the blip/tgwtg years. I always watched your Bad Movie Beatdown videos and I had such great laughs watching it. I remember when you did BMB of James Bond's Die Another Day, this one commenter on TGWTG website nitpicked your video like crazy. Anyway, hope to see more videos from you.

Your first video may have hauntingly bad sound mixing, but I will always find your old Bad Movie Beatdown episodes delightful. It's a shame you had to end your show due to a petty legal threat and can't even do reuploads anymore

  • @TomTheyy

22:50 Reminds me of when CR of Familiar Faces would kinda do that in videos commenting on lady characters, like at the start of his Professor Dementor episode where he talks about *Kim Possible and her classmates* in that way? He's thankfully long since matured out of that, albeit whilst ironically using some very "extravagant" female VTuber models.
Glad to have been a part of the Bad Movie Beatdown following and its thorough deconstructions of why disastrous films don't work like Epic Movie, Ratatoing and Breaking Wind. Probably can't hear "Ready to Roll" without thinking of it.

I think you aged very well my good man. I had a hair transplant a few years ago and am glad i did it - but i always have huge respect for men that embrace their hair loss. And you definitely aged better than a certain baldy on that obscure TGWTG Website. Mostly because you evolved in your craft, while the other guy is screaming at the camera like it´s still 2009.
