People interested in the Marie Antoinette dress, Amber Butchard did a show called a Stich In Time you can watch on youtube about the history and why it was a scandal. Plus they remake the dress in period materials and practices!
So interesting! I never thought about Marie Antoinette’s chemise as the grandma of peasant tops, but I totally see it now! Also I’m SO happy with retro trends this summer. I’m literally writing this wearing an H&M peasant top and pleated shorts 😂
Haha love it! There's so many! And even a lot of the stuff that isn't technically vintage works well as a tie-in. Yeah those monarchs were fly af back in the day.
LOVING the high waist-ed paints/shorts, so flattering on people. Also, the 80s/90s revival: I don't think a lot of people realize the 80s copied the 40s.
They definitely did. If you look at a movie like Heathers, you can really notice the similarities, such as the masculine influences on women's clothing, accentuated shoulders and some of the hairstyles.
ALMOST totally accurate! lol Marie Antoinette's white gown WAS seen as scandalous, but because it was only reminiscent of undergarments of the day. It came to be called a "chemise a la reine" because of that, but it was in fact a full dress that she had ordered for the purpose of wearing at her little reproduction farm so she and her children could pretend to be "peasants". I would say the Edwardian blouse is probably more a descendant of the chemise a la reine than the tea dresses, which were actually quite structure, and had what was called a "sack back" like the french dresses of Marie's time, but certainly the regency white lawn ballgown was inspired by her! Altogether love this video, I adore when history buffs all exchange research and information
I agree with the blouse thing :) And I think the regency dresses were probably just evolved from the dresses fashionable women would wear in the very end of the 18th century. Particularly in France it became popular (but very risque) to wear long, loose and in some cases almost transparent dresses made of white cotton. This was after the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, during which wearing the expensive and previously fashionable cotton was considered bad form and unpatriotic (you were supposed to dress simply, in contrast to the much hated aristocracy who would do whatever they could to flaunt their wealth) But these dresses were definitely inspired by Marie Antoinette's chemise gown, which had been very popular after the Duchess of Devonshire, who was one of the biggest fashion icons of the second half of the 18th century, began wearing the chemise gown as well. Sorry, I got a bit carried away there 😅 I love the video, loads of great ideas!
Love short and sweet. Actually, love any time you have to drop tips and tricks. I've been wearing my hair as you taught in your Hairstyles for Hot Days and getting loads of compliments. Thank you.
I love noticing past influences in trends, there's a lot of safari inspired stuff at the moment that looks quite 40s or 70s/80s does 40s. I'd imagine peasant blouses would also have been influenced by folk costumes
check out 'The Closet Historian' she is obsessed with 'Safari' or Adventure style and actually has a couple of lookbooks, really really really well done lookbooks on that style.
This kids, is why you save your clothes, because they will come back in style. I still have stuff from the 80s, and a good thing too. I remember lying on my bed to zip my jeans, yep, because tight was in and that was before they started putting spandex material in jeans. And I had my mom's mini dresses from the 60s. Wear what you want, don't worry about whether it's "in style" or not.
not really. it depends on the style. Actual 1990s style and the 1990s trend are pretty different. Actual 1990s clothes, unless high fashion, generally would still look extremely dated today. It usually has something to do with the color schemes used IMO or just the cuts and quality of certain things that don't equate fully to the 'revival' of the trends.
Great video doll...I love looking at the history of clothing & how it always comes back into fashion again, one way or another! Yes please to more of these types of videos! You look amazing sweetie. Xx
black chokers though specifically were started by prostitutes in the 19th century if I remember correctly and then they 'caught on' and everyone started wearing them.
High waisted belt is flattering today because the rib cage is often the smallest circumference now instead of the waist as it used to be.(think the raised waist dresses of the late 70’s and early 80’s)
One of the really great things about a lot of these more classic pieces you can get them secondhand, which I adore so just grab some vintage pictures and put them on ,your phone and look for things sort of look like it as you go shopping.
Great tips! Instead of using a knife to add holes to your belt, opt for a 16 penny nail and a hammer. Even for the toughest leather two good whacks will get you a new belt hole that looks original. This tip is also vintage lol as I leaned it from my grandparents over 30 years ago 😆
I didn't realise that those type of belts were popular back then! Definitely learned something new. I think the kind of earrings you are wearing in this video are also available in high street shops now, by the way 😊
What am I even talking about!? I bought them from a vintage store in New York! I was thinking I was wearing an entirely different pair from a recent video 😂😂😂 Thanks for the info that you can find similar ones though!
Thanks lovely! Aw thank you for the compliment. Fashion history is so interesting! And to see how long some things have been in style or cycled back into fashion is rather amazing!
This was really nice! I especially enjoyed the history behind the items, it's always amazing to see just how long something has actually been around! And I have to say, it's really nice that you are talking so fast. It might sound weird but I find that quite refreshing in comparison to a lot of other TH-camrs (who I still love!) who talk slowly so everyone can understand everything. I get that but actually listening to someone talking normally makes listening a lot easier!
Lol! A lot of that is because they prepare and use auto cues, which I'd love to do but I just don't have the time or energy health wise at the moment. I will eventually do it when I can devote more time to TH-cam, but thanks for the info that you like the relatability of how I talk. Hopefully I can find a happy medium! I think I definitely talk too fast, and I feel each video I get faster. I think I worry I'll run out of energy or have an episode and not be able to finish 🙈
@@MissBeeTownsend I wouldn't worry about it too much if it's that much work - I mean, I don't know anything about making TH-cam Videos except that it takes a lot of time and effort and I imagine adding something like that makes it even more complicated...I can obviously only speak for myself but I think your videos are great this way. Though I get the 'running out of energy' bit...I talk way too fast all the time and I think that's just a problem all people who speak fast run into at some point! 😂 either way, as long as you like it and are happy with it, I'm sure it will be fine ☺️💕
Thank you Bee. I love your high waisted shorts. I need to see where I can score pair. About people being rude, that is a sign of jealousy. Don't let it get to you. If they do not like your videos, why do they watch them? Because they live a boring life, and apparently have to much time on their hands. They are trolls. Ignore them. They are not worth your energie. I really like your videos. Sharing is caring. Right 😉
Just wanted to say, I’ve been subscribed to you for only a few months but I’ve been loving your videos. When you were talking about the uptake of the chemise or tea dress style, all I could think of was all the nanas who must have been appalled at the sight of all the girls swanning about in their “undergarments!”
Alexandra really didn't 'start' the trend. Prostitutes actually did, they were usually just black ribbons tied around their necks though and were apparently worn to show that they were 'for hire'.
Just FYI - capris ARE available BUT - they are of a modern style☹️ - they are low-waisted, very hip-hugging and in a lot of cases - slightly flaring up on the bottom - the total OPPOSITE from vintage look☹️ Speaking from a desperate experience of trying multiple pairs from multiple places. Ended up buying off eBay a true vintage which fitted 100%. Planning to sew a pair as well.
I was borne in the second half of the 20th century and have seen fashion being rehashed every decade....70s were thirties, 80s were forties, etc. waiting for the revolutionary look of the 21st century. The Chanel of this century. We may be seeing the beginning of a minimalist uniform era. The land fills can't take much more. Fashion will be strictly an art form. Fabrics that keep the body cool as well as warm have been created already...
60s was art nouveau inspired partially...the 70s was def a deco revival and the 80s were def 40s. In high fashion though, the 90s was also somewhat of a 1930s revival with all the bias cut satin 'slip' dresses...

Hiya, I’m a new sub love your channel! You did really well for someone who didn’t study fashion history! I did, but am a little fuzzy so I might be slightly off on chokers which were fashionable in the Middle Ages (I think that’s the time period I’m thinking of- when Da Vinci was around) w/ the wealthy. Peasant style blouses defo go back to ancient times, kept popping up in various folk costumes throughout history. Fun video! Have a lovely week! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️ PS being a wee faery sized woman w/ a short waist, long legs (the opposite of “petite” sizing), low to mid rise hits @ my waist which is tiny as well- always punching holes in belts!😆
Theres zero way to know if anything is ethically made. Even if they say it is, it doesn't mean its true. Theres generally no guidelines on that sort of thing, they can say its ethically made even if it isn't. Ethics is subjective, afterall. Its not unusual for faux fur on parkas to be actually be dog fur from china. Depends what your ethics is...'ethically sourced' leather products or unethically sourced 'vegan leather' which is hella damaging to the planet. Nearly everything we consume in modern society has a dark source, so it honestly almost doesn't matter anymore. Buy thrifted or vintage when you can...thats really the only 'ethical' way to shop.

Vintage Kitty Yeah I agree. On myself especially I look much better in high waisted + cropped shirt. I always felt I looked dumpy in low rise jeans.
It has also been said that Parisians wore the chokers in red to symbolized those who had been beheaded during the revolution.

Agree, I wore chokers in the 90's loved! Can't wear anymore, 52 now , just admire one that I saved...for one of my granddaughter's one day....
I wonder if Galliano somehow influenced the trend? He really loved to do historically inspired fashion at the time.

Chokers actually go all the way back Rococo period.

About putting another hole in the belt, try a metal kebab skewer, it makes a much neater hole easier :)

Thank you for a fun video! The velvet choker necklaces were also very, very popular in the 1970s . (Trust me! I was there! ;) )
