Great job! Now your steering wheel matches your road wheels. Electrical work always looks daunting to me though.

I think Electrics scare a lot of folk off. Electronics scare me but I'm fine with simple wires motors lamps and switches.👍

Awesome video just what I was looking for. I saved it as I'm doing up my T25. Just finished the bodywork next painting then putting everything back once finished I will then get back to your videos in my saved file to purchase all the parts including the battery terminals and follow your instructions. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome video. Top cool man. Enjoy watching your videos 👍👍👏👏🙏✌🤟🙏❤

Hi John. I've just seen this. I fitted such a unit into my '78 VW LT28. Well, my auto electrician did the wiring. It came with a rotary knob that reduces or increases the steering effort. So I adjust it back a bit for open road work. It's a Mondeo unit, but looks very similar. My spline (larger) is the same as my Daimler V8, so I fitted a large Momo s/wheel with 'Jag' adapter. Cheers. Paul. NZ. '99 XKR.

Wow. Not often we get a VW / Jag cross over link. Thanks Paul. I fancy the variable assist knob🤔. 👍👍

      No Problem at all.
My dad drives her as a daily and the only issue he had was that the fuse holder we used for the main supply unscrewed its cap and gave a bad contact (may have been me not tightening it enough😉)
Anyway Dad was so used to the power steering that he was convinced he had a flat tire rather than a power steering bad connection.🤣

All the links are dead now. Could you update them please. Or post the details of which products they were? Thanks.

    Hello,
    Very good job and Video.
Can you give some long term experience with the system?

      Hi Frity
Its my dad who puts the miles on the T25 these days but he has covered any hundreds and is still enjoying smooth and light steering. He did have a minor hiccup. Ironically as he was leaving a VW festival. He thought he had a flat tire.(he has never driven many miles without the power steering.) Turned out it was the 50Amp fuse supplying the steering motor. It had not blown, it had mechanically failed. The usable link inside the glass tube had become detached from its end cap, so when you squeezed the fuse slightly it appeared to be fine and as you let the pressure off it went open circuit. Anyway a new fuse and holder later and all is well again. Once you have driven a 100 miles with the power steering you will claim its underivable without it.
No issues with the supplied Kit at all so far.

Thank you very much. Another question, how strong is your generator? I have a 65A Generatoren but two batteries in my T3. I have some thoughts that the system could need too much power.

@Frity FantomWe have same system and two Batteries also on a zig split charge system. No problems.
I believe the Vauxhall corsa is the doner for the power steering motor so our commercial vehicle electrical systems should give no problem. Just ensure that you use a suitably heavy supply wire from the Battery to and through the fuse.

is this road speed sensitive? great video :)

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John
Thanks for the kind comment. No the system technically is not speed sensitive. Ie it does not know how fast the bus is going and cannot therefore make any adjustments based on this. However...... Obviously we all know its at manoeuvring speed that our T25's are a bit of a handfull. Therefore its at low speed we need the most assistance.
Well the corsa C system on which this is based, contains a variable torque sensor. This detects the amount of effort being input from the driver and instantly applies just enough motorised effort to make the resultant effort = 'X amount of torque, and X is almways constant. (I went Geeky again SORRY) but effectively that means it supplies more assistance at low speed because the effort required without assistance is so much greater.
Its Very effective at low speeds, and feels just as light at high speeds rather than even lighter. if that makes any sense.

excellent, great information. Speed sensor or torque sensor, same job done I guess. I hadn't heard of that before, you've added yet another job on my list ;-)

I don't know whether you'll get to see my comment as your install was done three years ago, but please consider moving your 50A fuse to the battery end of the cable...not the load end. If you get a short to ground on the section of cable between the battery and the fuse, your fuse won't see it and your cable will most likely melt. Single insulated cables do rub and chafe with vibration so it might take a while, but anything you can do to mitigate a possible disaster ought to be considered.
I commented over on the 'Maxwell Smart' channel after he did a similar thing on his '84 Westfalia.
    th-cam.com/video/5OSa-MzMGqo/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MaxwellSmart
I've now completed my Corsa C column install conversion into a T25 and will agree that the result turns the van into a silky smooth puppy rather than the two handed beast it previously was! (albeit only at parking speeds!)
I initially left the steering controller in it's 'Vauxhall' configuration (ie mounted on the column) but I didn't like it as it left all four connectors to the ecu exposed and in danger of getting clobbered by an errant driver's foot or two....
I ended up mounting it inside the dash just behind the column and only had to lengthen a couple of the 'add on' controller's wires simply because I'd previously snipped them down to length in a vain attempt at neatness....everything else just plugged back in although I did rotate the motor 180 degrees to free up it's connection a bit.
    Nice channel too btw.

Thanks for the comment and the compliment Mark. Thanks for the tip re the fuse. I must confess I had not thought about it from that point of view. So consider me educated and grateful.
      All the. best
